Many natural counting problems arise in connection with the normal form of braids--and seem to have never been considered so far. Here we solve some of them by analysing the normality condition in terms of the associated permutations, their descents and the corresponding partitions. A number of different induction schemes appear in that framework.
On the model of simple braids, defined to be the left divisors of Garside's elements $Δ\_n$ in the monoid $B\_\infty^+$ , we investigate simple elements in Thompson's monoid $F^+$ and in a larger monoid $H^+$ that is a hybrid of $B\_\infty^+$ and $F^+$ : in both cases, we count how many simple elements left divide the right lcm of the first n -- 1 atoms, and characterize their normal forms in terms of forbidden factors. In the case of $H^+$, a generalized Pascal triangle appears.
This paper surveys some combinatorial aspects of Smith normal form, and more generally, diagonal form. The discussion includes general algebraic properties and interpretations of Smith normal form, critical groups of graphs, and Smith normal form of random integer matrices. We then give some examples of Smith normal form and diagonal form arising from (1) symmetric functions, (2) a result of Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville, and (3) the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement.
In this paper we investigate the decidability and complexity of problems related to braid composition. While all known problems for a class of braids with three strands, $B_3$, have polynomial time solutions we prove that a very natural question for braid composition, the membership problem, is NP-complete for braids with only three strands. The membership problem is decidable in NP for $B_3$, but it becomes harder for a class of braids with more strands. In particular we show that fundamental problems about braid compositions are undecidable for braids with at least five strands, but decidabi…
Braids can be represented geometrically as laminations of punctured disks. The geometric complexity of a braid is the minimal complexity of a lamination that represents it, and tight laminations are representatives of minimal complexity. These laminations give rise to a normal form of braids, via a relaxation algorithm. We study here this relaxation algorithm and the associated normal form. We prove that this normal form is regular and prefix-closed. We provide an effective construction of a deterministic automaton that recognizes this normal form.
We investigate the combinatorics of the general formulas for the powers of the operator $h \partial^k$, where $h$ is a central element of a ring and $\partial$ is a differential operator. This generalizes previous work on the powers of operators $h \partial$. New formulas for the generalized Stirling numbers are obtained.
Describing the conjugacy classes of the unipotent upper triangular groups $\mathrm{UT}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ uniformly (for all or many values of $n$ and $q$) is a nearly impossible task. This paper takes on the related problem of describing the normal subgroups of $\mathrm{UT}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$. For $q$ a prime, a bijection will be established between these subgroups and pairs of combinatorial objects with labels from $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{\times}$. Each pair comprises a loopless binary matroid and a tight splice, an apparently new kind of combinatorial object which interpolates between nonnesti…
Non-crossing partitions have been a staple in combinatorics for quite some time. More recently, they have surfaced (sometimes unexpectedly) in various other contexts from free probability to classifying spaces of braid groups. Also, analogues of the non-crossing partition lattice have been introduced. Here, the classical non-crossing partitions are associated to Coxeter and Artin groups of type $\mathsf{A}_n$, which explains the tight connection to the symmetric groups and braid groups. We shall outline those developments.
We consider combinatorial aspects of $λ$-terms in the model based on de Bruijn indices where each building constructor is of size one. Surprisingly, the counting sequence for $λ$-terms corresponds also to two families of binary trees, namely black-white trees and zigzag-free ones. We provide a constructive proof of this fact by exhibiting appropriate bijections. Moreover, we identify the sequence of Motzkin numbers with the counting sequence for neutral $λ$-terms, giving a bijection which, in consequence, results in an exact-size sampler for the latter based on the exact-size sampler for Motzk…
