We generalize some results of Borwein, Burke, Lewis, and Wang to mappings with values in metric (resp. ordered normed linear) spaces. We define two classes of monotone mappings between an ordered linear space and a metric space (resp. ordered linear space): $K$-monotone dominated and cone-to-cone monotone mappings. First we show some relationships between these classes. Then, we study continuity and differentiability (also in the metric and $w^*$ senses) of mappings in these classes.
The main purpose of this paper is to treat semigroups properties, like norm continuity, compactness and differentiability for perturbed semigroups in Banach spaces. In particular, we investigate three large classes of perturbations, Miyadera-Voigt, Desch-Schappacher and Staffans-Weiss perturbations. Our approach is mainly based on feedback theory of Salamon-Weiss systems. Our results are applied to abstract boundary integro-differential equations in Banach spaces.
The continuity of the core inverse and the dual core inverse is studied in the setting of C*-algebras. Later, this study is specialized to the case of bounded Hilbert space operators and to complex matrices. In addition, the differentiability of these generalized inverses is studied in the context of C*-algebras.
This paper deals with the new concept of interval whose both the bounds themselves are also intervals. We name this new type of interval as Type-2 interval. Here we have introduced Type-2 interval-valued function and its properties. To serve this purpose, we have defined a distance on the set of all Type-2 intervals, named as extended Moore distance for Type-2 intervals which is a metric on the set of all Type-2 intervals. Then we have shown that the space of Type-2 interval is a complete metric space with respect to extended Moore distance. Then we have introduced the concept of limit-continu…
In the context of general Banach spaces characterizations for the maximal monotonicity of operators with non-empty domain interior as well as stronger continuity properties for such operators are provided.
We solve the differentiability problem for the evolution map in Milnor's infinite dimensional setting. We first show that the evolution map of each $C^k$-semiregular Lie group $G$ (for $k\in \mathbb{N}\sqcup\{\mathrm{lip},\infty\}$) admits a particular kind of sequentially continuity $-$ called Mackey k-continuity. We then prove that this continuity property is strong enough to ensure differentiability of the evolution map. In particular, this drops any continuity presumptions made in this context so far. Remarkably, Mackey k-continuity arises directly from the regularity problem itself, which…
The notion of weakly monotone functions extends the classical definition of monotone function, that can be traced back to H.Lebesgue. It was introduced, in the setting of Sobolev spaces, by J.Manfredi, and thoroughly investigated in the more general framework of Orlicz-Sobolev spaces by diverse authors, including T.Iwaniec, J.Kauhanen, P.Koskela, J.Maly, J.Onninen, X.Zhong. The present paper complements and augments the available theory of pointwise regularity properties of weakly monotone functions in Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. In particular, a variant is proposed in a customary condition ensurin…
We prove that for every function $f:X\to Y$, where $X$ is a separable Banach space and $Y$ is a Banach space with RNP, there exists a set $A\in\tilde\mcA$ such that $f$ is Gateaux differentiable at all $x\in S(f)\setminus A$, where $S(f)$ is the set of points where $f$ is pointwise-Lipschitz. This improves a result of Bongiorno. As a corollary, we obtain that every $K$-monotone function on a separable Banach space is Hadamard differentiable outside of a set belonging to $\tilde\mcC$; this improves a result due to Borwein and Wang. Another corollary is that if $X$ is Asplund, $f:X\to\R$ cone mo…
The aim of this expository article is to present recent developments in the centuries old discussion on the interrelations between continuous and differentiable real valued functions of one real variable. The truly new results include, among others, the $D^n$-$C^n$ interpolation theorem: {\em For every $n$-times differentiable $f\colon\R\to\R$ and perfect $P\subset \R$ there is a $C^n$ function $g\colon\R\to\R$ such that $f\restriction P$ and $g\restriction P$ agree on an uncountable set} and an example of a differentiable function $F\colon\R\to\R$ (which can be nowhere monotone) and of compac…
A version of the Kolmogorov-Chentsov theorem on sample differentiability and Hölder continuity of random fields on domains of cone type is proved, and the result is generalized to manifolds.
In this paper, we consider the structure of maximally monotone operators in Banach space whose domains have nonempty interior and we present new and explicit structure formulas for such operators. Along the way, we provide new proofs of the norm-to-weak$^{*}$ closedness and of property (Q) for these operators (as recently proven by Voisei). Various applications and limiting examples are given.
In the preceding work \cite{watanabe3}, it is shown that the solution to the BCS gap equation for superconductivity is continuous with respect to both the temperature and the energy under the restriction that the temperature is very small. Without this restriction, we show in this paper that the solution is continuous with respect to both the temperature and the energy, and that the solution is Lipschitz continuous and monotonically decreasing with respect to the temperature.
We investigate the differentiability properties of real-valued quasiconvex functions f defined on a separable Banach space X. Continuity is only assumed to hold at the points of a dense subset. If so, this subset is automatically residual. Sample results that can be quoted without involving any new concept or nomenclature are as follows: (i) If f is usc or strictly quasiconvex, then f is Hadamard differentiable at the points of a dense subset of X (ii) If f is even, then f is continuous and Gateaux differentiable at the points of a dense subset of X. In (i) or (ii), the dense subset need not b…
If $Au=-div(a(x,Du))$ is a monotone operator defined on the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(R^n)$, $1<p<+\infty$, with $a(x,0)=0$ for a.e. $x\in R^n$, the capacity $C_A(E,F)$ relative to $A$ can be defined for every pair $(E,F)$ of bounded sets in $R^n$ with $E\subset F$. We prove that $C_A(E,F)$ is increasing and countably subadditive with respect to $E$ and decreasing with respect to $F$. Moreover we investigate the continuity properties of $C_A(E,F)$ with respect to $E$ and $F$.
A non-linear Black-Scholes-type equation is studied within counterparty risk models. The classical hypothesis on the uniform Lipschitz-continuity of the non-linear reaction function allows for an equivalent transformation of the semi-linear Black-Scholes equation into a standard parabolic problem with a monotone non-linear reaction function and an inhomogeneous linear diffusion equation. This setting allows us to construct a scheme of monotone, increasing or decreasing, iterations that converge monotonically to the true solution. As typically any numerical solution of this problem uses most co…
Monotone operators are of central importance in modern optimization and nonlinear analysis. Their study has been revolutionized lately, due to the systematic use of the Fitzpatrick function. Pioneered by Penot and Svaiter, a topic of recent interest has been the representation of maximal monotone operators by so-called autoconjugate functions. Two explicit constructions were proposed, the first by Penot and Zalinescu in 2005, and another by Bauschke and Wang in 2007. The former requires a mild constraint qualification while the latter is based on the proximal average. We show that these two au…
The Lebesgue property (order-continuity) of a monotone convex function on a solid vector space of measurable functions is characterized in terms of (1) the weak inf-compactness of the conjugate function on the order-continuous dual space, (2) the attainment of the supremum in the dual representation by order-continuous linear functionals. This generalizes and unifies several recent results obtained in the context of convex risk measures.
Given a monotone convex function on the space of essentially bounded random variables with the Lebesgue property (order continuity), we consider its extension preserving the Lebesgue property to as big solid vector space of random variables as possible. We show that there exists a maximum such extension, with explicit construction, where the maximum domain of extension is obtained as a (possibly proper) subspace of a natural Orlicz-type space, characterized by a certain uniform integrability property. As an application, we provide a characterization of the Lebesgue property of monotone convex …
