We study the structure of nilpotent subsemigroups in the semigroup $M(n,\mathbb{F})$ of all $n\times n$ matrices over a field, $\mathbb{F}$, with respect to the operation of the usual matrix multiplication. We describe the maximal subsemigroups among the nilpotent subsemigroups of a fixed nilpotency degree and classify them up to isomorphism. We also describe isolated and completely isolated subsemigroups and conjugated elements in $M(n,\mathbb{F})$.
In this paper, we characterize completely the structure of Clifford semigroups of matrices over an arbitrary field. It is shown that a semigroups of matrices of finite order is a Clifford semigroup if and only if it is isomorphic to a subdirect product of some linear (0-)groups. Then we generalize this result to a semigroup of matrices of countably infinite order and give a similar necessary and sufficient condition for it to be a Clifford semigroup.
A new sufficient condition under which a semigroup admits no finite identity basis has been recently suggested in a joint paper by Karl Auinger, Yuzhu Chen, Xun Hu, Yanfeng Luo, and the author (see http://arxiv.org/abs/1405.0783). Here we apply this condition to show the absence of a finite identity basis for the semigroup $\mathrm{UT}_3(\mathbb{R})$ of all upper triangular real $3\times 3$-matrices with 0s and/or 1s on the main diagonal. The result holds also for the case when $\mathrm{UT}_3(\mathbb{R})$ is considered as an involution semigroup under the reflection with respect to the seconda…
We describe maximal nilpotent subsemigroups of a given nilpotency class in the semigroup $Ω_n$ of all $n\times n$ real matrices with non-negative coefficients and the semigroup $\mathbf{D}_n$ of all doubly stochastic real matrices.
We study the algebraic structure of the semigroup of all $2 \times 2$ tropical matrices under multiplication. Using ideas from tropical geometry, we give a complete description of Green's relations and the idempotents and maximal subgroups of this semigroup.
The main result of the paper proves that the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices satisfies a non-trivial semigroup identity, unlike the case of matrices over infinite fields. We exploit a strong connection between the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices and the bicyclic monoid to show that a variant of Adian's identity for the bicyclic monoid holds in our case.We use generic matrices of tropical polynomials to prove our result.
We consider the lattice of subsemigroups of the general linear group over an Artinian ring containing the group of diagonal matrices and show that every such semigroup is actually a group.
Let $\mathcal M_{mn}=\mathcal M_{mn}(\mathbb F)$ denote the set of all $m\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb F$, and fix some $n\times m$ matrix $A\in\mathcal M_{nm}$. An associative operation $\star$ may be defined on $\mathcal M_{mn}$ by $X\star Y=XAY$ for all $X,Y\in\mathcal M_{mn}$, and the resulting \emph{sandwich semigroup} is denoted $\mathcal M_{mn}^A=\mathcal M_{mn}^A(\mathbb F)$. These semigroups are closely related to Munn rings, which are fundamental tools in the representation theory of finite semigroups. In this article, we study $\mathcal M_{mn}^A$ as well as its subsemigro…
We study the algebraic properties of the series $\mathrm{K}_n$ of semigroups, which is inspired by \cite{Ki} and has origins in convexity theory. In particular, we describe Green's relations on $\mathrm{K}_n$, prove that there exists a faithful representation of $\mathrm{K}_n$ by $n\times n$ matrices with non-negative integer coefficients (and even explicitly construct such a representation), and prove that $\mathrm{K}_n$ does not admit a faithful representation by matrices of smaller size. We also describe the maximal nilpotent subsemigroups in $\mathrm{K}_n$, all isolated and completely isol…
Let $n$ be a positive integer and $\mathcal M$ a set of rational $n \times n$-matrices such that $\mathcal M$ generates a finite multiplicative semigroup. We show that any matrix in the semigroup is a product of matrices in $\mathcal M$ whose length is at most $2^{n (2 n + 3)} g(n)^{n+1} \in 2^{O(n^2 \log n)}$, where $g(n)$ is the maximum order of finite groups over rational $n \times n$-matrices. This result implies algorithms with an elementary running time for deciding finiteness of weighted automata over the rationals and for deciding reachability in affine integer vector addition systems …
Locally inverse semigroups are regular semigroups whose idempotents form pseudo-semilattices. We characterise the categories that correspond to locally inverse semigroups in the realm of Nambooripad's cross-connection theory. Further, we specialise our cross-connection description of locally inverse semigroups to inverse semigroups and completely 0-simple semigroups, obtaining structure theorems for these classes. In particular, we show that the structure theorem for inverse semigroups can be obtained using only one category, quite analogous to the Ehresmann-Schein-Nambooripad Theorem; for com…
In 2010, Izhakian & Margolis proved that the bicyclic monoid admits a representation as a semigroup of upper triangular tropical matrices. We extend this result by classifying all one-relation monoids which admit such representations. We also classify, with two exceptions, all one-relation monoids which admit representations as semigroups of tropical matrices.
An irreducible norm closed semigroup of complex matrices is simultaneously similar to a semigroup of partial isometries if and only if (a) the norms of all nonzero members of it are uniformly bounded above and below, and (b) its idempotents commute. This is a generalization of the well-known result on bounded groups.
