A new version of classical S-procedure in system theory is proposed based on duality in the space of positive definite matrices and introduction of matrix Lagrange multipliers. A new proof and extension of the recent results of T.Iwasaki, S. Hara, A. Fradkov ( Systems & Control Letters, 2005. Vol 54 (7), pp 681-691) concerning equivalence between frequency domain inequality on finite frequency range and constrained dissipativity property for linear systems is given. The results of this paper extend S-procedure to allow for analysis and design of systems with matrix inequalities constraints.
We consider the constrained assortment optimization problem under the mixed multinomial logit model. Even moderately sized instances of this problem are challenging to solve directly using standard mixed-integer linear optimization formulations. This has motivated recent research exploring customized optimization strategies and approximation techniques. In contrast, we develop a novel conic quadratic mixed-integer formulation. This new formulation, together with McCormick inequalities exploiting the capacity constraints, enables the solution of large instances using commercial optimization sof…
We consider cooperative multi-agent consensus optimization problems over an undirected network of agents, where only those agents connected by an edge can directly communicate. The objective is to minimize the sum of agent-specific composite convex functions over agent-specific private conic constraint sets; hence, the optimal consensus decision should lie in the intersection of these private sets. We provide convergence rates both in sub-optimality, infeasibility and consensus violation; examine the effect of underlying network topology on the convergence rates of the proposed decentralized a…
Second order conic programming (SOCP) has been used to model various applications in power systems, such as operation and expansion planning. In this paper, we present a two-stage stochastic mixed integer SOCP (MISOCP) model for the distribution system expansion planning problem that considers uncertainty and also captures the nonlinear AC power flow. To avoid costly investment plans due to some extreme scenarios, we further present a chance-constrained variant that could lead to cost-effective solutions. To address the computational challenge, we extend the basic Benders decomposition method …

Optimization problems with uncertainty in the constraints occur in many applications. Particularly, probability functions present a natural form to deal with this situation. Nevertheless, in some cases, the resulting probability functions are nonsmooth. This motivates us to propose a regularization employing the Moreau envelope of a scalar representation of the vector inequality. More precisely, we consider a probability function which covers most of the general classes of probabilistic constraints: $$φ(x)=\mathbb{P}(Φ(x,ξ)\in -\mathcal{K}),$$ where $\mathcal{K}$ is a convex cone of a Banach s…

Support vector machines (SVM) is one of the well known supervised classes of learning algorithms. Furthermore, the conic-segmentation SVM (CS-SVM) is a natural multiclass analogue of the standard binary SVM, as CS-SVM models are dealing with the situation where the exact values of the data points are known. This paper studies CS-SVM when the data points are uncertain or mislabelled. With some properties known for the distributions, a chance-constrained CS-SVM approach is used to ensure the small probability of misclassification for the uncertain data. The geometric interpretation is presented …
Plain vanilla K-means clustering has proven to be successful in practice, yet it suffers from outlier sensitivity and may produce highly unbalanced clusters. To mitigate both shortcomings, we formulate a joint outlier detection and clustering problem, which assigns a prescribed number of datapoints to an auxiliary outlier cluster and performs cardinality-constrained K-means clustering on the residual dataset, treating the cluster cardinalities as a given input. We cast this problem as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) that admits tractable semidefinite and linear programming relaxations. W…
We consider monotone mean-variance (MMV) portfolio selection problems with a conic convex constraint under diffusion models, and their counterpart problems under mean-variance (MV) preferences. We obtain the precommitted optimal strategies to both problems in closed form and find that they coincide, without and with the presence of the conic constraint. This result generalizes the equivalence between MMV and MV preferences from non-constrained cases to a specific constrained case. A comparison analysis reveals that the orthogonality property under the conic convex set is a key to ensuring the …
A constrained optimization problem is primal infeasible if its constraints cannot be satisfied, and dual infeasible if the constraints of its dual problem cannot be satisfied. We propose a novel iterative method, named proportional-integral projected gradient method (PIPG), for detecting primal and dual infeasiblity in convex optimization with quadratic objective function and conic constraints. The iterates of PIPG either asymptotically provide a proof of primal or dual infeasibility, or asymptotically satisfy a set of primal-dual optimality conditions. Unlike existing methods, PIPG does not c…
We solve the stabilization problem on the $n-$sphere in the presence of conic constraints. We use the stereographic projection to map this problem to the classical navigation problem on $\mathbb{R}^n$ in the presence of spherical obstacles. As a consequence, any obstacle avoidance algorithm for navigation in the Euclidean space can be used to solve the given problem on the $n-$sphere. We illustrate the effectiveness of the approach using the kinematics of the reduced attitude model on the $2-$sphere.
In compressed sensing, the sensing matrix is assumed perfectly known. However, there exists perturbation in the sensing matrix in reality due to sensor offsets or noise disturbance. Directions-of-arrival (DoA) estimation with off-grid effect satisfies this situation, and can be formulated into a (non)convex optimization problem with linear inequalities constraints, which can be solved by the interior point method (using the CVX tools), but at a large computational cost. In this work, in order to design efficient algorithms, we consider various alternative formulations, such as unconstrained fo…
Distributionally robust chance-constrained programs (DR-CCP) over Wasserstein ambiguity sets exhibit attractive out-of-sample performance and admit big-$M$-based mixed-integer programming (MIP) reformulations with conic constraints. However, the resulting formulations often suffer from scalability issues as sample size increases. To address this shortcoming, we derive stronger formulations that scale well with respect to the sample size. Our focus is on ambiguity sets under the so-called left-hand side (LHS) uncertainty, where the uncertain parameters affect the coefficients of the decision va…
