The paper introduces a general strategy for identifying strong local minimizers of variational functionals. It is based on the idea that any variation of the integral functional can be evaluated directly in terms of the appropriate parameterized measures. We demonstrate our approach on a problem of W^{1,infinity} weak-* local minima--a slight weakening of the classical notion of strong local minima. We obtain the first quasiconvexity-based set of sufficient conditions for W^{1,infinity} weak-* local minima.
In this note we present a brief overview of variational methods to solve homogenization problems. The purpose is to give a first insight on the subject by presenting some fundamental theoretical tools, both classical and modern. We conclude by mentioning some open problems.
The present note contains a review of $p$-energies and Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces that carry a strongly local regular Dirichlet form. These Sobolev spaces are then used to generalize some basic results from the calculus of variations, such as the existence of minimizers for convex functionals and certain constrained mimimization problems. This applies to a number of non-classical situations such as degenerate diffusions, superpositions of diffusions and diffusions on fractals or on products of fractals.
We construct a singular minimizing map ${\bf u}$ from $\mathbb{R}^3$ to $\mathbb{R}^2$ of a smooth uniformly convex functional of the form $\int_{B_1} F(D{\bf u})\,dx$.
We consider minimization problems in the calculus of variations set in a sequence of domains the size of which tends to infinity in certain directions and such that the data only depend on the coordinates in the directions that remain constant. We study the asymptotic behavior of minimizers in various situations and show that they converge in an appropriate sense toward minimizers of a related energy functional in the constant directions.
The purpose of these expository notes is to give a quick and elementary, yet rigorous, presentation of the rudiments of the theory of Viscosity Solutions for fully nonlinear 2nd order PDE, with applications to Calculus of Variations in the space $L^\infty$.
We obtain monotonicity properties for minima and stable solutions of general energy functionals of the type $$ \int F(\nabla u, u, x) dx $$ under the assumption that a certain integral grows at most quadratically at infinity. As a consequence we obtain several rigidity results of global solutions in low dimensions.

We show that for any regular bounded domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb R^n$, $n=2,3$, there exist infinitely many global diffeomorphisms equal to the identity on $\partial Ω$ which solve the Eikonal equation. We also provide explicit examples of such maps on annular domains. This implies that the $\infty$-Laplace system arising in vectorial Calculus of Variations in $L^\infty$ does not suffice to characterise either limits of $p$-Harmonic maps as $p\to \infty$, or absolute minimisers in the sense of Aronsson.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a locally finite graph. Firstly, using calculus of variations, including a direct method of variation and the mountain-pass theory, we get sequences of solutions to several local equations on $G$ (the Schrödinger equation, the mean field equation, and the Yamabe equation). Secondly, we derive uniform estimates for those local solution sequences. Finally, we obtain global solutions by extracting convergent sequence of solutions. Our method can be described as a variational method from local to global.
We prove the uniqueness of the viscosity solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation associated with a Bolza problem of the Calculus of Variations, assuming that the Lagrangian is autonomous, continuous, superlinear, and satisfies the usual convexity hypothesis. Under the same assumptions we prove also the uniqueness, in a class of lower semicontinuous functions, of a slightly different notion of solution, where classical derivatives are replaced only by subdifferentials. In the first part of this doctoral thesis we develop a regularity theory for a polyconvex functional in compressible elasticity. In the second part, we will concentrate on uniqueness questions in various situations of finite elasticity. Here it is our main objective to establish uniqueness criteria, which when present, guarantee the uniqueness of the corresponding global minimizer. Then various applications and generalisations are discussed one of which is the construction of a counterexample to regularity.
In the inverse problem of the calculus of variations one is asked to find a Lagrangian and a multiplier so that a given differential equation, after multiplying with the multiplier, becomes the Euler--Lagrange equation for the Lagrangian. An answer to this problem for the case of a scalar ordinary differential equation of order $2n, n\geq 2,$ is proposed.
We connect the well-known theory of functional forms of variational bicomplex with the theory of antiexact differential forms. We identify antiexact functional forms as an obstruction to the variationality of differential equations. The most prominent result of this observation is the formulation of the variational problem for some differential equations that are not variational and neither have a variational multiplier. Heat, Navier-Stokes, and KdV equations illustrate this new variational principle.
In this work, a novel approach for the solution of the inverse conductivity problem from one and multiple boundary measurements has been developed on the basis of the implication of the framework of BV - functions. The space of the functions of bounded variation is here recommended as the most appropriate functional space hosting the conductivity profile under reconstruction. We consider the variational complex on infinite jet space and the complex of variational derivatives for Lagrangians of multidimensional paths and study relations between them. The discussion of the variational (bi)complex is set up in terms of a flat connection in the jet bundle. We extend it to supercase using a particular new class of forms. Divergence-free symmetric tensors seem ubiquitous in Mathematical Physics. We show that this structure occurs in models that are described by the so-called "second" variational principle, where the argument of the Lagrangian is a closed differential form. Divergence-free tensors are nothing but the second form of the Euler--Lagrange equations. The symmetry is associated with the invariance of the Lagrangian density upon the action of some orthogonal group.
In a first part we propose an introduction to multisymplectic formalisms, which are generalisations of Hamilton's formulation of Mechanics to the calculus of variations with several variables: we give some physical motivations, related to the quantum field theory, and expound the simplest example, based on a theory due to T. de Donder and H.
