We give a bijective proof of the MacMahon-type equidistribution over the group of signed even permutations C_2 \wr A_n that was stated in [Bernstein. Electron. J. Combin. 11 (2004) 83]. This is done by generalizing the bijection that was introduced in the bijective proof of the equidistribution over the alternating group A_n in [Bernstein and Regev. Sem. Lothar. Combin. 53 (2005) B53b].
We generalize two bijections due to Garsia and Gessel to compute the generating functions of the two vector statistics $(\des_G, \maj,\ell_G, \col)$ and $(\des_G, \ides_G, \maj, \imaj, \col, \icol)$ over the wreath product of a symmetric group by a cyclic group. Here $\des_G$, $\ell_G$, $\maj$, $\col$, $\ides_G$, $\imaj_G$, and $\icol$ denote the number of descents, length, major index, color weight, inverse descents, inverse major index, and inverse color weight, respectively. Our main formulas generalize and unify several known identities due to Brenti, Carlitz, Chow-Gessel, Garsia-Gessel, a…
On the set of permutations of a finite set, we construct a bijection which maps the 3-vector of statistics $(maj-exc,des,exc)$ to a 3-vector $(maj\_2,\widetilde{des\_2},inv\_2)$ associated with the $q$-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Shareshian and Wachs in \textit{Chromatic quasisymmetric functions, arXiv:1405.4269(2014).}
We answer four questions from a recent paper of Rao and Shinkar on Lipschitz bijections between functions from $\{0,1\}^n$ to $\{0,1\}$. (1) We show that there is no $O(1)$-bi-Lipschitz bijection from $\mathrm{Dictator}$ to $\mathrm{XOR}$ such that each output bit depends on $O(1)$ input bits. (2) We give a construction for a mapping from $\mathrm{XOR}$ to $\mathrm{Majority}$ which has average stretch $O(\sqrt{n})$, matching a previously known lower bound. (3) We give a 3-Lipschitz embedding $ϕ: \{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}^{2n+1}$ such that $\mathrm{XOR}(x) = \mathrm{Majority}(ϕ(x))$ for all $x \in …
Let $A \subseteq \{0,1\}^n$ be a set of size $2^{n-1}$, and let $ϕ\colon \{0,1\}^{n-1} \to A$ be a bijection. We define the average stretch of $ϕ$ as ${\sf avgStretch}(ϕ) = {\mathbb E}[{\sf dist}(ϕ(x),ϕ(x'))]$, where the expectation is taken over uniformly random $x,x' \in \{0,1\}^{n-1}$ that differ in exactly one coordinate. In this paper we continue the line of research studying mappings on the discrete hypercube with small average stretch. We prove the following results. (1) For any set $A \subseteq \{0,1\}^n$ of density $1/2$ there exists a bijection $ϕ_A \colon \{0,1\}^{n-1} \to A$ such t…
We give a direct combinatorial proof of the $q,t$-symmetry relation $\tilde H_μ(X;q,t)=\tilde H_{μ'}(X;t,q)$ in the Macdonald polynomials $\tilde H_μ$ at the specialization $q=1$. The bijection demonstrates that the Macdonald inv statistic on the permutations of any given row of a Young diagram filling is Mahonian. Moreover, our bijection gives rise a family of new bijections on words that preserves the classical Mahonian inv statistic.
In this note we observe that a bijection related to Littelmann's root operators (for type $A_1$) transparently explains the well known enumeration by length of walks on $\N$ (left factors of Dyck paths), as well as some other enumerative coincidences. We indicate a relation with bijective solutions of Bertrand's ballot problem: those can be mechanically transformed into bijective proofs of the mentioned enumeration formula.
We provide a bijective proof of a formula of Auli and the author expressing the number of inversion sequences with no three consecutive equal entries in terms of the number of non-derangements, that is, permutations with fixed points. Additionally, we give bijective proofs of two simple recurrences for the number of non-derangements.
Inspired by the Stochastic processes described by the Feller Coupling and Chinese Restaurant Processes, we create four different bijections from words in the set $[1]\times [2] \times\cdot \times[n]$ to $S_n$. We then compose these maps with their inverse to obtain a toal of six bijections $S_n \to S_n$. Following that, we investigate the fixed points ($1$-cycle) and higher $k$-cycles of these maps. We characterized some of their properties completely as well as empirically showing the complexity of the higher $k$-cycle structures for these maps.
Babson and Steingr\'ımsson introduced generalized permutation patterns and showed that most of the Mahonian statistics in the literature can be expressed by the combination of generalized pattern functions. Particularly, they defined a new Mahonian statistic in terms of generalized pattern functions, which is denoted $stat$. Recently, Amini investigated the equidistributions of these Mahonian statistics over sets of pattern avoiding permutations. Moreover, he posed several conjectures. In this paper, we construct a bijection from $S_n(213)$ to $S_n(231)$, which maps the statistic $(maj, stat)$ …
Centrosymmetric involutions in the symmetric group S_{2n} are permutations πsuch that π=π^{-1} and π(i)+π(2n+1-i)=2n+1 for all i, and they are in bijection with involutions of the hyperoctahedral group. We describe the distribution of some natural descent statistics on 321-avoiding centrosymmetric involutions, including the number of descents in the first half of the involution, and the sum of the positions of these descents. Our results are based on two new bijections, one between centrosymmetric involutions in S_{2n} and subsets of {1,...,n}, and another one showing that certain statistics o…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to an error in Lemma 3, making the (bijective) proof of Theorem 4 and Corollary 5 invalid (symmetry of k-nonnesting and k-noncrossing set partitions).
Set partitions avoiding $k$-crossing and $k$-nesting have been extensively studied from the aspects of both combinatorics and mathematical biology. By using the generating tree technique, the obstinate kernel method and Zeilberger's algorithm, Lin confirmed a conjecture due independently to the author and Martinez-Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length 3 and enhanced 3-nonnesting partitions have the same cardinality. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof of this conjecture. Our bijection also enables us to provide a new bijective proof of …
We give a bijective proof of a conjecture of Regev and Vershik on the equality of two multisets of hook numbers of certain skew-Young diagrams. The bijection proves a result that is stronger and more symmetric than the original conjecture, by means of a construction involving Dyck paths, a particular type of lattice path.
We provide new Schmidt-type results through an investigation of two bijections, which are results involving partitions with parts counted only at given indices. Mork's bijection, the first of these, was originally given as a proof of Schmidt's theorem. We show that a version of Sylvester's bijection is equivalent to Mork's bijection applied to 2-modular diagrams, which implies refinements of existing results and new generating function identities. We then develop a bijection based on an idea appearing in a recent paper of Andrews and Keith, that places partitions counted at the indices $r$, $t…
We introduce the notion of a Mahonian pair. Consider the set, P^*, of all words having the positive integers as alphabet. Given finite subsets S,T of P^*, we say that (S,T) is a Mahonian pair if the distribution of the major index, maj, over S is the same as the distribution of the inversion number, inv, over T. So the well-known fact that maj and inv are equidistributed over the symmetric group, S_n, can be expressed by saying that (S_n,S_n) is a Mahonian pair. We investigate various Mahonian pairs (S,T) with S different from T. Our principal tool is Foata's fundamental bijection f: P^* -> P^…
A Catalan magma is a unique factorisation normed magma with only one irreducible element. The \val partitions the base set into subsets enumerated by Catalan numbers. The primary theorem characterises the conditions which a set a with product map must satisfy in order to be a free magma generated by the irreducible elements. This theorem can be used to prove a set of objects (with a product map) is a Catalan magma. The isomorphism between Catalan magmas gives a "universal" bijection -- essentially one bijection algorithm for all pairs of families. The morphism property ensures the bijection is…
In this extended abstract we announce a proof that, in a Coxeter group of rank 3, low elements are in bijection with small inversion sets. This gives a partial confirmation of Conjecture 2 in [Dyer, Hohlweg '16]. That same article provides the main ingredient: the bipodality of the set of small roots is used to propagate information on the vertices of inversion polytopes.
In 2007, D.I. Panyushev defined a remarkable map on the set of nonnesting partitions (antichains in the root poset of a finite Weyl group). In this paper we identify Panyushev's map with the Kreweras complement on the set of noncrossing partitions, and hence construct the first uniform bijection between nonnesting and noncrossing partitions. Unfortunately, the proof that our construction is well-defined is case-by-case, using a computer in the exceptional types. Fortunately, the proof involves new and interesting combinatorics in the classical types. As consequences, we prove several conjectur…
This paper proves a combinatorial rule expressing the product $s_τ(s_{λ/μ} \circ p_r)$ of a Schur function and the plethysm of a skew Schur function with a power sum symmetric function as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. This generalizes the SXP rule for the plethysm $s_λ\circ p_r$. Each step in the proof uses either an explicit bijection or a sign-reversing involution. The proof is inspired by an earlier proof of the SXP rule due to Remmel and Shimozono, A simple proof of the Littlewood--Richardson rule and applications, Discrete Mathematics 193 (1998) 257--266. The connecti…
This article presents a unified bijective scheme between planar maps and blossoming trees, where a blossoming tree is defined as a spanning tree of the map decorated with some dangling half-edges that enable to reconstruct its faces. Our method generalizes a previous construction of Bernardi by loosening its conditions of applications so as to include annular maps, that is maps embedded in the plane with a root face different from the outer face. The bijective construction presented here relies deeply on the theory of α-orientations introduced by Felsner, and in particular on the existence of …
The chromatic polynomial and its generalization, the chromatic symmetric function, are two important graph invariants. Celebrated theorems of Birkhoff, Whitney, and Stanley show how both objects can be expressed in three different ways: as sums over all spanning subgraphs, as sums over spanning subgraphs with no broken circuits, and in terms of acyclic orientations with compatible colorings. We establish all six of these expressions bijectively. In fact, we do this with only two bijections, as the proofs in the symmetric function setting are obtained using the same bijections as in the polynom…
In this paper we provide a bijective proof of a theorem of Garsia and Gessel describing the generating function of the major index over the set of all permutations of [n]={1,...,n} which are shuffles of given disjoint ordered sequences whose union is [n]. Two special cases are singled out: If the single element j is inserted into any permutation P of the remaining elements of [n], then the theorem states that inserting j into P increases the major index of P by some element of {0,1,...,n-1}, the increase determined uniquely by the index of insertion. We provide a direct proof of this fact usin…
Affine matrix-ball construction (abbreviated AMBC) was developed by Chmutov, Lewis, Pylyavskyy, and Yudovina as an affine generalization of Robinson-Schensted correspondence. We show that AMBC gives a simple way to compute a distinguished (or Duflo) involution in each Kazhdan-Lusztig cell of affine symmetric groups. We then use AMBC to give the first known canonical presentation for the asymptotic Hecke algebras of extended affine symmetric groups. As an application, we show that AMBC gives a conceptual way to compute Lusztig-Vogan bijection. For the latter we build upon prior works of Achar a…
We give a bijective proof of the Aztec diamond theorem, stating that there are $2^{n(n+1)/2}$ domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $n$. The proof in fact establishes a similar result for non-intersecting families of $n+1$ Schröder paths, with horizontal, diagonal or vertical steps, linking the grid points of two adjacent sides of an $n\times n$ square grid; these families are well known to be in bijection with tilings of the Aztec diamond. Our bijection is produced by an invertible "combing" algorithm, operating on families of paths without non-intersection condition, but instead with …
We provide two explicit bijections demonstrating that, among permutations, the number of invisible inversions is equidistributed with the number of occurrences of the vincular pattern 13-2 after sorting the set of runs.
We give a natural definition of rowmotion for $321$-avoiding permutations, by translating, through bijections involving Dyck paths and the Lalanne--Kreweras involution, the analogous notion for antichains of the positive root poset of type $A$. We prove that some permutation statistics, such as the number of fixed points, are homomesic under rowmotion, meaning that they have a constant average over its orbits. Our setting also provides a more natural description of the celebrated Armstrong--Stump--Thomas equivariant bijection between antichains and non-crossing matchings in types $A$ and $B$, …
We examine an identity originally stated in Ramanujan's ``lost notebook'' and first proven algebraically by Andrews and combinatorially by Kim. We give two independent combinatorial proofs and interpretations of this identity, which also extends an identity recently proven by Pak and Waarnar related to the product of partial theta functions: First, we give a direct combinatorial proof, using the involution principle, of a special case of the identity, and extend this into a direct combinatorial proof of the full identity as written. Second, we show that the identity can be rewritten, using min…
We show that indecomposable two-term presilting complexes over $Π_{n}$, the preprojective algebra of $A_{n}$, are in bijection with internal $n$-simplices in the prism $Δ_{n} \times Δ_{1}$, the product of an $n$-simplex with a 1-simplex. We show further that this induces a bijection between triangulations of $Δ_{n} \times Δ_{1}$ and two-term silting complexes over $Π_{n}$ such that bistellar flips of triangulations correspond to mutations of two-term silting complexes. These bijections are shown to compatible with the known bijections involving the symmetric group.
Baxter permutations originally arose in studying common fixed points of two commuting continuous functions. In 2015, Dilks proposed a conjectured bijection between Baxter permutations and non-intersecting triples of lattice paths in terms of inverse descent bottoms, descent positions and inverse descent tops. We prove this bijectivity conjecture by investigating its connection with the Françon--Viennot bijection. As a result, we obtain a permutation interpretation of the $(t,q)$-analog of the Baxter numbers $$ \frac{1}{{n+1\brack 1}_q{n+1\brack 2}_q}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}q^{3{k+1\choose2}}{n+1\brack…
We construct bijections giving three "codes" for trees. These codes follow naturally from the Matrix Tree Theorem of Tutte and have many advantages over the one produced by Prufer in 1918. One algorithm gives explicitly a bijection that is implicit in Orlin's manipulatorial proof of Cayley's formula (the formula was actually found first by Borchardt). Another is based on a proof of Knuth. The third is an implementation of Joyal's pseudo-bijective proof of the formula, and is equivalent to one previously found by Egecioglu and Remmel. In each case, we have at least two algorithms, one of which …
Consider S_n, the symmetric group on n letters, and let maj pi denote the major index of a permutation pi in S_n. Given positive integers k,l and nonnegative integers i,j, define m_n^{k,l}(i,j) := number of pi in S_n such that maj pi = i (mod k) and maj pi^{-1} = j (mod l). We prove bijectively that if k,l are relatively prime and at most n then m_n^{k,l}(i,j) = n!/(kl) which, surprisingly, does not depend on i and j. Equivalently, if m_n^{k,l}(i,j) is interpreted as the (i,j)-entry of a matrix m_n^{k,l}, then this is a constant matrix under the stated conditions. This bijection is extended to…
