The aim of this paper is to extend the approximate quasi-interpolation on a uniform grid by dilated shifts of a smooth and rapidly decaying function on a uniform grid to scattered data quasi-interpolation. It is shown that high order approximation of smooth functions up to some prescribed accuracy is possible, if the basis functions, which are centered at the scattered nodes, are multiplied by suitable polynomials such that their sum is an approximate partition of unity. For Gaussian functions we propose a method to construct the approximate partition of unity and describe the application of the new quasi-interpolation approach to the cubature of multi-dimensional integral operators.
Locally refined spline surfaces (LRB) is a representation well suited for scattered data approximation. When a data set has local details in some areas and is largely smooth in other, LR B-splines allow the spatial distribution of degrees of freedom to follow the variations of the data set. An LRB surface approximating a data set is refined in areas where the accuracy does not meet a required tolerance. In this paper we address, in a systematic study, different LRB refinement strategies and polynomial degrees for surface approximation. We study their influence on data volume and accuracy when …
In this contribution, we introduce a multilevel approximation method with T-splines for fitting scattered point clouds iteratively, with an application to land remote sensing. This new procedure provides a local surface approximation by an explicit computation of the control points and is called a multilevel T-splines approximation (MTA). It is computationally efficient compared with the traditional global least-squares (LS) approach, which may fail when there is an unfavourable point density from a given refinement level. We validate our approach within a simulated framework and apply it to t…
We discuss a pointwise numerical differentiation formula on multivariate scattered data, based on the coefficients of local polynomial interpolation at Discrete Leja Points, written in Taylor's formula monomial basis. Error bounds for the approximation of partial derivatives of any order compatible with the function regularity are provided, as well as sensitivity estimates to functional perturbations, in terms of the inverse Vandermonde coefficients that are active in the differentiation process. Several numerical tests are presented showing the accuracy of the approximation.
The popularity of local meshless methods in the field of numerical simulations has increased greatly in recent years. This is mainly due to the fact that they can operate on scattered nodes and that they allow a direct control over the approximation order and basis functions. In this paper we analyse two popular variants of local strong form meshless methods, namely the radial basis function-generated finite differences (RBF-FD) using polyharmonic splines (PHS) augmented with monomials, and the weighted least squares (WLS) approach using only monomials. Our analysis focuses on the accuracy and…
We consider two-stage scattered data fitting with truncated hierarchical B-splines (THB-splines) for the adaptive reconstruction of industrial models. The first stage of the scheme is devoted to the computation of local least squares variational spline approximations, exploiting a simple fairness functional to handle data distributions with a locally varying density of points. Hierarchical spline quasi-interpolation based on THB-splines is considered in the second stage of the method to construct the adaptive spline surface approximating the whole scattered data set and a suitable strategy to …
Choosing models from a hypothesis space is a frequent task in approximation theory and inverse problems. Cross-validation is a classical tool in the learner's repertoire to compare the goodness of fit for different reconstruction models. Much work has been dedicated to computing this quantity in a fast manner but tackling its theoretical properties occurs to be difficult. So far, most optimality results are stated in an asymptotic fashion. In this paper we propose a concentration inequality on the difference of cross-validation score and the risk functional with respect to the squared error. T…
In this paper, we consider the fundamental problem of approximation of functions on a low-dimensional manifold embedded in a high-dimensional space, with noise affecting both in the data and values of the functions. Due to the curse of dimensionality, as well as to the presence of noise, the classical approximation methods applicable in low dimensions are less effective in the high-dimensional case. We propose a new approximation method that leverages the advantages of the Manifold Locally Optimal Projection (MLOP) method (introduced by Faigenbaum-Golovin and Levin in 2020) and the strengths o…
In this paper we propose an approximation method for high-dimensional $1$-periodic functions based on the multivariate ANOVA decomposition. We provide an analysis on the classical ANOVA decomposition on the torus and prove some important properties such as the inheritance of smoothness for Sobolev type spaces and the weighted Wiener algebra. We exploit special kinds of sparsity in the ANOVA decomposition with the aim to approximate a function in a scattered data or black-box approximation scenario. This method allows us to simultaneously achieve an importance ranking on dimensions and dimensio…
The recovery of multivariate functions and estimating their integrals from finitely many samples is one of the central tasks in modern approximation theory. Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund inequalities provide answers to both the recovery and the quadrature aspect. In this paper, we put ourselves on the $q$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^q$, and investigate how well continuous $L_p$-norms of polynomials $f$ of maximum degree $n$ on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^q$ can be discretized by positively weighted $L_p$-sum of finitely many samples, and discuss the relationship between the offset between the continuou…
Data sites selected from modeling high-dimensional problems often appear scattered in non-paternalistic ways. Except for sporadic clustering at some spots, they become relatively far apart as the dimension of the ambient space grows. These features defy any theoretical treatment that requires local or global quasi-uniformity of distribution of data sites. Incorporating a recently-developed application of integral operator theory in machine learning, we propose and study in the current article a new framework to analyze kernel interpolation of high dimensional data, which features bounding stoc…
We compare a recently proposed multivariate spline based on mixed partial derivatives with two other standard splines for the scattered data smoothing problem. The splines are defined as the minimiser of a penalised least squares functional. The penalties are based on partial differentiation operators, and are integrated using the finite element method. We compare three methods to two problems: to remove the mixture of Gaussian and impulsive noise from an image, and to recover a continuous function from a set of noisy observations.
In this paper, we present a method for denoising and reconstruction of low-dimensional manifold in high-dimensional space. We suggest a multidimensional extension of the Locally Optimal Projection algorithm which was introduced by Lipman et al. in 2007 for surface reconstruction in 3D. The method bypasses the curse of dimensionality and avoids the need for carrying out dimensional reduction. It is based on a non-convex optimization problem, which leverages a generalization of the outlier robust L1-median to higher dimensions while generating noise-free quasi-uniformly distributed points recons…
Functions with discontinuities appear in many applications such as image reconstruction, signal processing, optimal control problems, interface problems, engineering applications and so on. Accurate approximation and interpolation of these functions are therefore of great importance. In this paper, we design a moving least-squares approach for scattered data approximation that incorporates the discontinuities in the weight functions. The idea is to control the influence of the data sites on the approximant, not only with regards to their distance from the evaluation point, but also with respec…
A Radial Basis Function Generated Finite-Differences (RBF-FD) inspired technique for evaluating definite integrals over bounded volumes that have smooth boundaries in three dimensions is described. A key aspect of this approach is that it allows the user to approximate the value of the integral without explicit knowledge of an expression for the boundary surface. Instead, a tesselation of the node set is utilized to inform the algorithm of the domain geometry. Further, the method applies to node sets featuring spatially varying density, facilitating its use in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical…

A Radial Basis Function Generated Finite-Differences (RBF-FD) inspired technique for evaluating definite integrals over the volume of the ball in three dimensions is described. Such methods are necessary in many areas of Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics and many other application areas. Previous approaches needed restrictive uniformity in the node set, which the algorithm presented here does not require. By using RBF-FD approach, the proposed algorithm computes quadrature weights for $N$ arbitrarily scattered nodes in only $O(N\mbox{ log}N)$ operations with high orders of accuracy.
