We establish a formula for the sum of the Lyapounov exponents of an holomorphic endomorphism of ${\bf P}^k$. For an holomorphic family of such endomorphisms we define the {\em bifurcation current} as $dd^cL$ and show that it vanishes when the repulsive cycles move holomorphically. We then prove a formula which relates this current with the interaction between the Green current and the current of integration on the critical set. In the 1-dimensional case (i.e. for ${\bf P}^1$) we find a geometrical description of the support of this current and its powers. Finally we introduce the {\em bifurcation measure} giving some applications. This last part may be interpreted as a generalization of Mane-Sad-Sullivan theory based on pluri-potentialist methods.
The aim of these lectures is the study of bifurcations within holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps by mean of ergodic and pluripotential theoretic tools.
We initiate a parametric study of holomorphic families of polynomial skew products, i.e., polynomial endomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$ of the form $F(z,w)= (p(z), q(z,w))$ that extend to holomorphic endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{C})$. We prove that dynamical stability in the sense of arXiv:1403.7603 preserves hyperbolicity within such families, and give a complete classification of the hyperbolic components that are the analogue, in this setting, of the complement of the Mandelbrot set for the family $z^2 +c$. We also precisely describe the geometry of the bifurcation locus and current …
We establish an approximation of the activity current $T_c$ in the parameter space of a holomorphic family $f$ of rational functions having a marked critical point $c$ by parameters for which $c$ is periodic under $f$, i.e., is a superattracting periodic point. This partly generalizes a Dujardin--Favre theorem for rational functions having preperiodic points, and refines a Bassanelli--Berteloot theorem on a similar approximation of the bifurcation current $T_f$ of the holomorphic family $f$. The proof is based on a dynamical counterpart of this approximation.
Let $Λ$ be a complex manifold and let $(f_λ)_{λ\in Λ}$ be a holomorphic family of rational maps of degree $d\geq 2$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$. We define a natural notion of entropy of bifurcation, mimicking the classical definition of entropy, by the parametric growth rate of critical orbits. We also define a notion a measure-theoretic bifurcation entropy for which we prove a variational principle: the measure of bifurcation is a measure of maximal entropy. We rely crucially on a generalization of Yomdin's bound of the volume of the image of a dynamical ball. Applying our technics to complex dynamics …
We study holomorphic families of polynomial-like maps depending on a parameter s. We prove that the partial sums of largest Lyapunov exponents are plurisubharmonic functions of s. We also study their continuity and introduce the bifurcation locus as the support of bifurcation currents.
Given, in the Lagrangian torus fibration $R^4\to R^2$, a Lagrangian submanifold $L$, endowed with a trivial flat connection, the corresponding mirror object is constructed on the dual fibration by means of a family of Morse homologies associated to the generating function of $L$, and it is provided with a holomorphic structure. Morse homology, however, is not defined along the caustic $C$ of $L$ or along the bifurcation locus $B$, where the family does not satisfy the Morse-Smale condition. The holomorphic structure is extended to the subset $C\cup B$, except cusps, yielding the so called quan…
In this note we review a selection of contemporary research themes in holomorphic dynamics. The main topics that will be discussed are: geometric (laminar and woven) currents and their applications, bifurcation theory in one and several variables, and the problem of wandering Fatou components.
Bifurcation loci in the moduli space of degree $d$ rational maps are shaped by the hypersurfaces defined by the existence of a cycle of period $n$ and multiplier 0 or $e^{iθ}$. Using potential-theoretic arguments, we establish two equidistribution properties for these hypersurfaces with respect to the bifurcation current. To this purpose we first establish approximation formulas for the Lyapunov function. In degree $d=2$, this allows us to build holomorphic motions and show that the bifurcation locus has a lamination structure in the regions where an attracting basin of fixed period exists.
Let (ρ_λ)_{λ\in Λ} be a holomorphic family of representations of a finitely generated group G into PSL(2,C), parameterized by a complex manifold Λ. We define a notion of bifurcation current in this context, that is, a positive closed current on Λdescribing the bifurcations of this family of representations in a quantitative sense. It is the analogue of the bifurcation current introduced by DeMarco for holomorphic families of rational mappings on the Riemann sphere. Our definition relies on the theory of random products of matrices, so it depends on the choice of a probability measure μon G. We…
In this paper we review the use of techniques of positive currents for the study of parameter spaces of one-dimensional holomorphic dynamical systems (rational mappings on P^1 or subgroups of the Moebius group PSL(2,C)). The topics covered include: the construction of bifurcation currents and the characterization of their supports, the equidistribution properties of dynamically defined subvarieties on parameter space.
We introduce a notion of stability for equilibrium measures in holomorphic families of endomorphisms of CP(k) and prove that it is equivalent to the stability of repelling cycles and equivalent to the existence of some measurable holomorphic motion of Julia sets which we call equilibrium lamination. We characterize the corresponding bifurcations by the strict subharmonicity of the sum of Lyapunov exponents or the instability of critical dynamics and analyze how repelling cycles may bifurcate. Our methods deeply exploit the properties of Lyapunov exponents and are based on ergodic theory and on…
Let (f_λ) be a holomorphic family of rational mappings of degree d on the Riemann sphere, with k marked critical points c_1,..., c_k, parameterized by a complex manifold Λ. To this data is associated a closed positive current T_1\wedge ... \wedge T_k of bidegree (k,k) on Λ, aiming to describe the simultaneous bifurcations of the marked critical points. In this note we show that the support of this current is accumulated by parameters at which c_1,..., c_k eventually fall on repelling cycles. Together with results of Buff, Epstein and Gauthier, this leads to a complete characterization of Supp(…
We consider closed positive currents invariant by a singular holomorphic foliation on an algebraic surface. We show that under some conditions the foliation must leave invariant an algebraic curve.
We prove that given any $θ_1,\ldots,θ_{2d-2}\in \R\setminus\Z$, the support of the bifurcation measure of the moduli space of degree $d$ rational maps coincides with the closure of classes of maps having $2d-2$ neutral cycles of respective multipliers $e^{2iπθ_1},\ldots,e^{2iπθ_{2d-2}}$. To this end, we generalize a famous result of McMullen, proving that homeomorphic copies of $(\partial \Mand)^{k}$ are dense in the support of the $k^{th}$-bifurcation current $T^k_\bif$ in general families of rational maps, where $\Mand$ is the Mandelbrot set. As a consequence, we also get sharp dimension est…
In the moduli space of degree d polynomials, the set Per\_n(w) of classes [f] for which f admits a cycle of exact period n and multiplier w is known to be an algebraic hypersurface. We prove that, given a complex number w, these hypersurfaces equidistribute towards the bifurcation current as n tends to infinity.
In the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d$ rational maps, the bifurcation locus is the support of a closed $(1,1)$ positive current $T_\bif$ which is called the bifurcation current. This current gives rise to a measure $μ_\bif:=(T_\bif)^{2d-2}$ whose support is the seat of strong bifurcations. Our main result says that $\supp(μ_\bif)$ has maximal Hausdorff dimension $2(2d-2)$. As a consequence, the set of degree $d$ rational maps having $2d-2$ distinct neutral cycles is dense in a set of full Hausdorff dimension.
We define the pull-back operator, associated to a meromorphic transform, on several types of currents. We also give a simple proof to a version of a classical theorem on the extension of currents.
For an algebraic family $(f_t)$ of regular quadratic polynomial endomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$ parametrized by $\mathbb{D}^*$ and degenerating to a Hénon map at $t=0$, we study the continuous (and indeed harmonic) extendibility across $t=0$ of a potential of the bifurcation current on $\mathbb{D}^*$ with the explicit computation of the non-archimedean Lyapunov exponent associated to $(f_t)$. The individual Lyapunov exponents of $f_t$ are also investigated near $t=0$. Using $(f_t)$, we also see that any Hénon map is accumulated by the bifurcation locus in the space of quadratic holomorphic end…
Let f be a non-invertible holomorphic endomorphism of a projective space and f^n its iterate of order n. We prove that the pull-back by f^n of a generic (in the Zariski sense) hypersurface, properly normalized, converge to the Green current associated to f when n tends to infinity. We also give an analogous result for the pull-back of positive closed (1,1)-currents.
A notion of almost periodic current is introduced, as well as a notion of almost periodic holomorphic chain proceeded from that definition. Such a chain can be defined either as a special case of almost periodic currents or as a holomorphic chain whose trace measure is an almost periodic distribution. It is shown that in general situation almost periodicity of the trace of a current does not imply that for the current itself, even if it is closed and positive. The zero set (regarded as a holomorphic chain) of a holomorphic mapping can be represented as a Monge-Ampere type current, and one coul…
We prove that if a positive closed current is bounded by another one with bounded, continuous or Hoelder continuous super-potentials, then it inherits the same property. There are two different methods to define wedge-products of positive closed currents of arbitrary bi-degree on compact Kaehler manifolds using super-potentials and densities. When the first method applies, we show that the second method also applies and gives the same result. As an application, we obtain a sharp upper bound for the number of isolated periodic points of holomorphic maps on compact Kaehler manifolds whose action…
We describe the behaviour at infinity of the bifurcation current in the moduli space of quadratic rational maps. To this purpose, we extend it to some closed, positive (1, 1)-current on a two-dimensional complex projective space and then compute the Lelong numbers and the self-intersection of the extended current.
We study the laminarity of the Green current of endomorphisms of $P^2C$ near hyperbolic measures of saddle type. When these measures are supported by attracting sets, we prove that the Green current is laminar in the basin of attraction and we obtain new ergodic properties. This generalizes some results of Bedford and Jonsson on regular polynomial mappings in $C^2$.
In this paper, we discuss the equidistribution phenomena for holomorphic endomorphisms over $\mathbb{P}^k$ in the case of bidegree $(p,p)$ with $1<p<k$. We prove that if $f:\mathbb{P}^k\to\mathbb{P}^k$ is a holomorphic endomorphism of degree $d\geq 2$ and $T^p$ denotes the Green $(p,p)$-current associated with $f$, then there exists a proper invariant analytic subset $E$ for $f$ such that $d^{-pn}(f^n)^*(S)\to T^p$ exponentially fast in the current sense for every positive closed $(p,p)$-current $S$ of mass 1 such that $S$ is smooth on $E$.
Let \Fc be a holomorphic foliation by Riemann surfaces defined on a compact complex projective surface X satisfying the following two conditions: (1) the singular points of \Fc are all hyperbolic; (2) \Fc is Brody hyperbolic. Then we establish cohomological formulas for the Lyapunov exponent and the Poincaré mass of an extremal positive \ddc-closed current tangent to \Fc. If, moreover, there is no nonzero positive closed current tangent to \Fc, then we show that the Lyapunov exponent χ(\Fc) of \Fc, which is, by definition, the Lyapunov exponent of the unique normalized positive \ddc-closed cur…
In the context of holomorphic families of endomorphisms of $\mathbb P^k$, we prove that stability in the sense of [BBD18] is equivalent to a summability condition for the post-critical mass and to the convergence of a suitably defined ramification current. This allows us to both simplify the approach of [BBD18] and better relate stability to post-critical normality.
Let $f$ be a holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb P^k$ of degree $d.$ For each quasi-attractor of $f$ we construct a finite set of currents with attractive behaviors. To every such an attracting current is associated an equilibrium measure which allows for a systematic ergodic theoretical approach in the study of quasi-attractors of $\mathbb P^k.$ As a consequence, we deduce that there exist at most countably many quasi-attractors, each one with topological entropy equal to a multiple of $\log d.$ We also show that the study of these analytic objects can initiate a bifurcation theory for attra…
Abstract The present work describes a new fractional-order system of a two-compartment CA3 hippocampal pyramidal cell, which is known as Pinsky-Rinzel model with Caputo fractional derivative. Firstly, The transient of the solutions is investigated. Then based on the bifurcation diagrams, we study the general behavior of the system. In this case, fractional derivative order and currents injection, are taken as bifurcation parameters. Chaotic regions are obtained for different values of the fractional derivative order and different injection currents. Finally, a numerical approach is introduced …
We study the fine geometric structure of bifurcation currents in the parameter space of cubic polynomials viewed as dynamical systems. In particular we prove that these currents have some laminar structure in a large region of parameter space, reflecting the possibility of quasiconformal deformations. On the other hand, there is a natural bifurcation measure, supported on the closure of rigid parameters. We prove a strong non laminarity statement relative to this measure.
In this work, we consider a general conductance-based neuron model with the inclusion of the acetycholine sensitive, M-current. We study bifurcations in the parameter space consisting of the applied current, $I_{app}$ the maximal conductance of the M-current, $g_M$, and the conductance of the leak current, $g_L$. We give precise conditions for the model that ensure the existence of a Bogdanov-Takens (BT) point and show such a point can occur by varying $I_{app}$ and $g_{M}$. We discuss the case when the BT point becomes a Bogdanov-Takens-Cusp (BTC) point and show that such a point can occur in…
The equivariant Hopf bifurcation dynamics of a class of system of partial differential equations is carefully studied. The connections between the current dynamics and fundamental concepts in hyperbolic conservation laws are explained. The unique approximation property of center manifold reduction function is used in the current work to determine certain parameter in the normal form. The current work generalizes the study of the second author ([J. Yao, $O(2)$-Hopf bifurcation for a model of cellular shock instability, Physica D, 269 (2014), 63-75.]) and supplies a class of examples of $O(2)$ H…
In this work we prove a Brunella-Khanedani-Suwa variational type residue theorem for currents invariant by holomorphic foliations. As a consequence, we give conditions for the leaves of a singular holomorphic foliation to accumulate in the intersection of the singular set of the foliation with the support of an invariant current.
We investigate dynamics and bifurcations in a mathematical model that captures electrochemical experiments on arrays of microelectrodes. In isolation, each individual microelectrode is described by a one-dimensional unit with a bistable current-potential response. When an array of such electrodes is coupled by controlling the total electric current, the common electric potential of all electrodes oscillates in some interval of the current. These coupling-induced collective oscillations of bistable one-dimensional units are captured by the model. Moreover, any equilibrium is contained in a clus…
Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are a promising new technology for producing hydrogen cheaply, efficiently, and sustainably. However, to scale up this technology, we need a better understanding of the processes in the devices. In this effort, we present a differential-algebraic equation (DAE) model of a microbial electrolysis cell with an algebraic constraint on current. We then perform sensitivity and bifurcation analysis for the DAE system. The model can be applied either to batch-cycle MECs or to continuous-flow MECs. We conduct differential-algebraic sensitivity analysis after fitting …
Driving nanomagnets by spin-polarized currents offers exciting prospects in magnetoelectronics, but the response of the magnets to such currents remains poorly understood. We show that an averaged equation describing the diffusion of energy on a graph captures the low-damping dynamics of these systems. From this equation we obtain the bifurcation diagram of the magnets, including the critical currents to induce stable precessional states and magnetization switching, as well as the mean times of thermally assisted magnetization reversal in situations where the standard reaction rate theory of K…
This paper presents a modified Morris-Lecar model by incorporating the sodium inward current. The dynamical behaviour of the model in response to key parameters is investigated. The model exhibits various excitability properties as the values of parameters are varied. We have examined the effects of changes in maximum ion conductances and external current on the dynamics of the membrane potential. A detailed numerical bifurcation analysis is conducted. The bifurcation structures obtained in this study are not present in existing bifurcation studies of original Morris-Lecar model. The results i…
We study some dynamical properties of skew products of Hénon maps of $\mbb C^2$ that are fibered over a compact metric space $M$. The problem reduces to understanding the dynamical behavior of the composition of a pseudo-random sequence of Hénon mappings. In analogy with the dynamics of the iterates of a single Hénon map, it is possible to construct fibered Green's functions that satisfy suitable invariance properties and the corresponding stable and unstable currents. This analogy is carried forth in two ways: it is shown that the successive pullbacks of a suitable current by the skew Hénon m…
In the first part of the thesis, we study some dynamical properties of skew products of Hénon maps of $\mbb C^2$ that are fibered over a compact metric space $M$. The problem reduces to understanding the dynamical behavior of the composition of a pseudo-random sequence of Hénon mappings. In analogy with the dynamics of the iterates of a single Hénon map, it is possible to construct fibered Green functions that satisfy suitable invariance properties and the corresponding stable and unstable currents. Further, it is shown that the successive pullbacks of a suitable current by the skew Hénon maps…
Interactions of inhibitory neurons produce gamma oscillations (30--80 Hz) in the local field potential, which is known to be involved in functions such as cognition and attention. In this study, the modified theta model is considered to investigate the theoretical relationship between the microscopic structure of inhibitory neurons and their gamma oscillations under a wide class of distribution functions of tonic currents on individual neurons. The stability and bifurcation of gamma oscillations for the Vlasov equation of the model is investigated by the generalized spectral theory. It is show…
We rigorously show that a class of systems of partial differential equations modeling wave bifurcations supports stationary equivariant bifurcation dynamics through deriving its full dynamics on the center manifold(s). A direct consequence of our result is that the oscillations of the dynamics are \textit{not} due to rotation waves though the system exhibits Euclidean symmetries. The main difficulties of carrying out the program are: 1) the system under study contains multi bifurcation parameters and we do not know \textit{a priori} how they come into play in the bifurcation dynamics. 2) the r…
A critical aspect in strategic modeling of transportation systems is user heterogeneity. In many real-world scenarios, e.g., when tolls are charged and drivers have different trade-offs between time and money, or when they get informed about current congestion by different routing apps, modeling users as rational decision makers with homogeneous utility functions becomes too restrictive. While global asymptotic stability of user equilibria in homogeneous routing games is known to hold for a broad class of evolutionary dynamics, the stability analysis of user equilibria in heterogeneous routing…
