Index theory has had profound impact on many branches of mathematics. In this note we discuss the context for a new kind of index theorem. We begin, however, with some operator theoretic results. In [11] Berger and Shaw established that finitely cyclic hyponormal operators have trace-class self-commutators. In [9], [31] Berger and Voiculescu extended this result to operators whose self-commutators can be expressed as the sum of a positive and a trace-class operator. In this note we show this result can't be extended to operators whose self-commutator can be expressed as the sum of a positive and a S_p-class operator. Then we discuss a conjecture of Arveson [4] on homogeneous submodules of the m-shift Hilbert space H^2_m and propose some refinements of it.
Further, we show how a positive solution would enable one to define K-homology elements for subvarieties in a strongly pseudo-convex domain with smooth boundary using submodules of the corresponding Bergman module. Finally, we discuss how the Chern character of these classes in cyclic cohomology could be defined and indicate what we believe the index to be.
We introduce an index of convergence for double sequences of real numbers. This index is used to describe the behaviour of some bivariate interpolation sequences at points of discontinuity of the first kind. We consider in particular the case of bivariate Lagrange and Shepard operators.
We improve upon on a limit theorem for numerical index for large classes of Banach spaces including vector valued $\ell_p$-spaces and $\ell_p$-sums of Banach spaces where $1\leq p \leq \infty$. We first prove $ n_1(X) = \displaystyle \lim_m n_1(X_m)$ for a modified numerical index $n_1(\, .\,)$. Later, we establish if a norm on $X$ satisfies the local characterization condition, then $n(X) = \displaystyle\lim_m n(X_m).$ We also present an example of a Banach space where the local characterization condition is satisfied.
We investigate conditions on a graph $C^*$-algebra for the existence of a faithful semifinite trace. Using such a trace and the natural gauge action of the circle on the graph algebra, we construct a smooth $(1,\infty)$-summable semfinite spectral triple. The local index theorem allows us to compute the pairing with $K$-theory. This produces invariants in the $K$-theory of the fixed point algebra, and these are invariants for a finer structure than the isomorphism class of $C^*(E)$.
We prove an index theorem for the quotient module of a monomial ideal. We obtain this result by resolving the monomial ideal by a sequence of Bergman space like essentially normal Hilbert modules.
This is an expository paper about the index of Toeplitz operators, and in particular Boutet de Monvel's theorem. We prove Boutet de Monvel's theorem as a corollary of Bott periodicity, and independently of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.
In this paper, we prove a Morse index theorem for the index form of even order linear Hamiltonian systems on the closed interval with reasonable self-adjoint boundary conditions. The highest order term is assumed to be nondegenerate.
In this paper we prove a relative index theorem for pairs of generalized Dirac operators on orbifolds which are the same at infinity. This generalizes to orbifolds a celebrated theorem of Gromov and Lawson.
We have been studying the index theory for some special infinite-dimensional manifolds with a "proper cocompact" actions of the loop group LT of the circle T, from the viewpoint of the noncommutative geometry. In this paper, we will introduce the LT-equivariant KK-theory and we will construct three KK-elements: the index element, the Clifford symbol element and the Dirac element. These elements satisfy a certain relation, which should be called the (KK-theoretical) index theorem, or the KK-theoretical Poincaré duality for infinite-dimensional manifolds. We will also discuss the assembly maps.
Based on operators borrowed from scattering theory, several concrete realizations of index theorems are proposed. The corresponding operators belong to some C*-algebras of pseudo-differential operators with coefficients which either have limits at plus and minus infinity, or which are periodic or asymptotically periodic, or which are uniformly almost periodic. These various situations can be deduced from a single partial isometry which depends on several parameters. All computations are explicitly performed.
We prove an index theorem for families of linear periodic Hamiltonian systems, which is reminiscent of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for selfadjoint elliptic operators. For the special case of one-parameter families, we compare our theorem with a classical result of Salamon and Zehnder. Finally, we use the index theorem to study bifurcation of branches of periodic solutions for families of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems.
The relative index theorem is proved for general first-order elliptic operators that are complete and coercive at infinity over measured manifolds. This extends the original result by Gromov-Lawson for generalised Dirac operators as well as the result of Bär-Ballmann for Dirac-type operators. The theorem is seen through the point of view of boundary value problems, using the graphical decomposition of elliptically regular boundary conditions for general first-order elliptic operators due to Bär-Bandara. Splitting, decomposition and the Phi-relative index theorem are proved on route to the rela…
This is an expository article. It discusses an approach to hypoelliptic Fredholm index theory based on noncommutative methods (groupoids, C*-algebras, K-theory). The paper starts with an explicit index theorem for scalar second order differential operators on 3-manifolds that are Fredholm but not elliptic. This low-brow index formula is expressed in terms of winding numbers. We then proceed to show how this theorem is a special case of a much more general index theorem for subelliptic operators on contact manifolds. Finally we discuss the noncommutative topology that is employed in the proof o…
Using a K-theory point of view, Bott related the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators on compact homogeneous spaces to the Weyl character formula. This article explains how to prove the local index theorem for compact homogenous spaces using Lie algebra methods. The method follows in outline the proof of the local index theorem due to Berline and Vergne. But the use of Kostant's cubic Dirac operator in place of the Riemannian Dirac operator leads to substantial simplifications. An important role is also played by the quantum Weil algebra of Alekseev and Meinrenken.
We present an alternative approach to the vector version of Krasnosel'skii compression-expansion fixed point theorem due to Precup, which is based on the fixed point index. It allows us to obtain new general versions of this fixed point theorem and also multiplicity results. We emphasize that all of them are coexistence fixed point theorems for operator systems, that means that every component of the fixed points obtained is non-trivial. Finally, these coexistence fixed point theorems are applied to obtain results concerning the existence of positive solutions for systems of Hammerstein integr…
We prove an extension of the Index Theorem for Morse-Sturm systems of the form $-V''+RV=0$, where R is symmetric with respect to a (non positive) symmetric bilinear form, and thus the corresponding differential operator is not self-adjoint. The result is then applied to the case of a Jacobi equation along a geodesic in a Lorentzian manifold, obtaining an extension of the Morse Index Theorem for Lorentzian geodesics with variable initial endpoints. Given a Lorentzian manifold (M,g), we consider a geodesic $γ$ in M starting orthogonally to a smooth submanifold P of M. Under suitable hypotheses, …
Perturbed geodesics are trajectories of particles moving on a semi-Riemannian manifold in the presence of a potential. Our purpose here is to extend to perturbed geodesics on semi-Riemannian manifolds the well known Morse Index Theorem. When the metric is indefinite, the Morse index of the energy functional becomes infinite and hence, in order to obtain a meaningful statement, we substitute the Morse index by its relative form, given by the spectral flow of an associated family of index forms. We also introduce a new counting for conjugate points, which need not to be isolated in this context,…
We study bifurcation from a branch of trivial solutions of semilinear elliptic Dirichlet boundary value problems on star-shaped domains, where the bifurcation parameter is introduced by shrinking the domain. In the proof of our main theorem we obtain in addition a special case of an index theorem due to S. Smale.
The Index theorem for holomorphic line bundles on complex tori asserts that some cohomology groups of a line bundle vanish according to the signature of the associated hermitian form. In this article, this theorem is generalized to quasi-tori, i.e. connected complex abelian Lie groups which are not necessarily compact. In view of the Remmert-Morimoto decomposition of quasi-tori as well as the Künneth formula, it suffices to consider only Cousin-quasi-tori, i.e. quasi-tori which have no non-constant holomorphic functions. The Index theorem is generalized to holomorphic line bundles, both linear…
