The cancellation problem asks if two complex algebraic varieties X and Y of the same dimension such that X\times\mathbb{C} and Y\times\mathbb{C} are isomorphic are isomorphic. Iitaka and Fujita established that the answer is positive for a large class of varieties of any dimension. In 1989, Danielewski constructed a famous counter-example using smooth affine surfaces with additive group actions. His construction was further generalized by Fieseler and Wilkens to describe a larger class of affine surfaces. Here we construct higher dimensional analogues of these surfaces. We study algebraic actions of the additive group \mathbb{C}\_{+} on certain of these varieties, and we obtain counter-examples to the cancellation problem in any dimension n\geq2 .
In 2007, Dubouloz introduced Danielewski varieties. Such varieties generalize Danielewski surfaces and provide counterexamples to generalized Zariski cancellation problem in arbitrary dimension. In the present work we describe the automorphism group of a Danielewski variety. This result is a generalization of a description of automorphisms of Danielewski surfaces due to Makar-Limanov.
We study a two-dimensional family of affine surfaces which are counter-examples to the Cancellation Problem. We describe the Makar-Limanov invariant of these surfaces, determine their isomorphism classes and characterize the automorphisms of these surfaces.
The Danielewski hypersurfaces are the hypersurfaces $X_{Q,n}$ in $\mathbb{C}^3$ defined by an equation of the form $x^ny=Q(x,z)$ where $n\geq1$ and $Q(x,z)$ is a polynomial such that $Q(0,z)$ is of degree at least two. They were studied by many authors during the last twenty years. In the present article, we give their classification as algebraic varieties. We also give their classification up to automorphism of the ambient space. As a corollary, we obtain that every Danielewski hypersurface $X_{Q,n}$ with $n\geq2$ admits at least two non-equivalent embeddings into $\mathbb{C}^3$.
Let $X$ and $X'$ be affine algebraic varieties over a field $\mathbb{k}$. The celebrated Zariski Cancellation Problem asks as to when the existence of an isomorphism $X\times\mathbb{A}^n\cong X'\times\mathbb{A}^n$ implies $X\cong X'$. In Part I of this paper (arXiv:1610.01805) we provided a criterion for cancellation in the case where $X$ is a normal affine surface admitting an $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibration $X\to B$ over a smooth affine curve $B$. If $X$ does not admit such an $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibration then the cancellation by the affine line is known to hold for $X$ by a result of Bandman and Makar…
The affine cancellation problem, which asks whether complex affine varieties with isomorphic cylinders are themselves isomorphic, has a positive solution for two dimensional varieties whose coordinate rings are unique factorization domains, in particular for the affine plane, but counterexamples are found within normal surfaces Danielewski surfaces and factorial threefolds of logarithmic Kodaira dimension equal to 1. The latter are therefore remote from the affine three-space, the first unknown case where the base of one cylinder is an affine space. Locally trivial Ga-actions play a significan…
We describe a method to construct hypersurfaces of the complex affine $n$-space with isomorphic $\mathbb{C}^*$-cylinders. Among these hypersurfaces, we find new explicit counterexamples to the Laurent Cancellation Problem, i.e. hypersurfaces that are non isomorphic, although their $\mathbb{C}^*$-cylinders are isomorphic as abstract algebraic varieties. We also provide examples of non isomorphic varieties $X$ and $Y$ with isomorphic cartesian squares $X\times X$ and $Y\times Y$.
The celebrated Zariski Cancellation Problem asks as to when the existence of an isomorphism $X\times\mathbb{A}^n\cong X'\times\mathbb{A}^n$ for (affine) algebraic varieties $X$ and $X'$ implies that $X\cong X'$. In this paper we provide a criterion for cancellation by the affine line (that is, $n=1$) in the case where $X$ is a normal affine surface admitting an $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibration $X\to B$ over a smooth affine curve $B$. If $X$ does not admit such an $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibration then the cancellation by the affine line is known to hold for $X$ by a result of Bandman and Makar-Limanov. It occu…
We address a variant of Zariski Cancellation Problem, asking whether two varieties which become isomorphic after taking their product with an algebraic torus are isomorphic themselves. Such cancellation property is easily checked for curves, is known to hold for smooth varieties of log-general type by virtue of a result of Iitaka-Fujita, and more generally for varieties which are not dominantly covered by images of the punctured affine line. We show in contrast that cancellation fails in general in every dimension bigger or equal to two.
In this note we prove that if $S$ is an affine non-toric $\mathbb{G}_m$-surface of hyperbolic type that admits a $\mathbb{G}_a$-action and $X$ is an affine irreducible variety such that $Aut(X)$ is isomorphic to $Aut(S)$ as an abstract group, then $X$ is a $\mathbb{G}_m$-surface of hyperbolic type. Further, we show that a smooth Danielewski surface $Dp = \{ xy = p(z) \} \subset \mathbb{A}^3$, where $p$ has no multiple roots, is determined by its automorphism group seen as an ind-group in the category of affine irreducible varieties.

A well-known cancellation problem asks when, for two algebraic varieties $V_1, V_2 \subseteq {\bf C}^n$, the isomorphism of the cylinders $V_1 \times {\bf C}$ and $V_2 \times {\bf C}$ implies the isomorphism of $V_1$ and $V_2$. In this paper, we address a related problem: when the equivalence (under an automorphism of ${\bf C}^{n+1}$) of two cylinders $V_1 \times {\bf C}$ and $V_2 \times {\bf C}$ implies the equivalence of their bases $V_1$ and $V_2$ under an automorphism of ${\bf C}^n$? We concentrate here on hypersurfaces and show that this problem establishes a strong connection between the…
The paper provides computations of the first non-vanishing $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy sheaves of the orthogonal Stiefel varieties which are relevant for the unstable isometry classification of quadratic forms over smooth affine schemes over perfect fields of characteristic $\neq 2$. Together with the $\mathbb{A}^1$-representability for quadratic forms, this provides the first obstructions for rationally trivial quadratic forms to split off a hyperbolic plane. For even-rank quadratic forms, this first obstruction is a refinement of the Euler class of Edidin and Graham. A couple of consequences are…
The machinery of framed (pre)sheaves was developed by Voevodsky [V1]. Based on the theory, framed motives of algebraic varieties are introduced and studied in [GP1]. An analog of Voevodsky's Cancellation Theorem [V1] is proved in this paper for framed motives stating that a natural map of framed $S^1$-spectra $$M_{fr}(X)(n)\to\underline{\textrm{Hom}}(\mathbb G,M_{fr}(X)(n+1)),\quad n\geq 0,$$ is a schemewise stable equivalence, where $M_{fr}(X)(n)$ is the $n$th twisted framed motive of $X$. This result is also necessary for the proof of the main theorem of [GP1] computing fibrant resolutions o…
Let $K$ be an arbitrary field of characteristic 0, and $\Aff^n$ the $n$-dimensional affine space over $K$. A well-known cancellation problem asks, given two algebraic varieties $V_1, V_2 \subseteq \Aff^n$ with isomorphic cylinders $V_1 \times \Aff^1$ and $V_2 \times \Aff^1$, whether $V_1$ and $V_2$ themselves are isomorphic. In this paper, we focus on a related problem: given two varieties with equivalent (under an automorphism of $\Aff^{n+1}$) cylinders $V_1 \times \Aff^1$ and $V_2 \times \Aff^1$, are $V_1$ and $V_2$ equivalent under an automorphism of $\Aff^n$? We call this stable equivalenc…
This is an expanded version of the talk by the author at the conference Polynomial Rings and Affine Algebraic Geometry, February 12--16, 2018, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tokyo, Japan. Considering a local version of the Zariski Cancellation Problem naturally leads to exploration of some classes of varieties of special kind and their equivariant versions. We discuss several topics inspired by this exploration, including the problem of classifying a class of affine algebraic groups that are naturally singled out in studying the conjugacy problem for algebraic subgroups of the Cremona groups.
Given a perfect field of exponential characteristic $e$ and a functor $f:\mathcal A\to\mathcal B$ between symmetric monoidal strict $V$-categories of correspondences satisfying the cancellation property such that the induced morphisms of complexes of Nisnevich sheaves $$f_*:\mathbb Z_{\mathcal A}(q)[1/e]\to\mathbb Z_{\mathcal B}(q)[1/e],\quad q\geq 0,$$ are quasi-isomorphisms, it is proved that for every $k$-smooth algebraic variety $X$ the morphisms of twisted motives of $X$ with $\mathbb Z[1/e]$-coefficients $$M_{\mathcal A}(X)(q)\otimes\mathbb Z[1/e]\to M_{\mathcal B}(X)(q)\otimes\mathbb Z[…
