We study controllability issues for the 2D Euler and Navier-Stokes (NS) systems under periodic boundary conditions. These systems describe motion of homogeneous ideal or viscous incompressible fluid on a two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. We assume the system to be controlled by a degenerate forcing applied to fixed number of modes.
In our previous work \cite{ASpb,AS43,ASDAN} we studied global controllability by means of degenerate forcing for Navier-Stokes (NS) systems with nonvanishing viscosity ($ν>0$). Methods of differential geometric/Lie algebraic control theory have been used for that study.
In the present contribution we improve and extend the controllability results in several aspects: 1) we obtain a stronger sufficient condition for controllability of 2D NS system in an observed component and for $L_2$-approximate controllability; 2) we prove that these criteria are valid for the case of ideal incompressible fluid ($ν=0)$; 3) we study solid controllability in projection on any finite-dimensional subspace and establish a sufficient criterion for such controllability.
In this paper we deal with the local null controllability of the N-dimensional Navier-Stokes system with internal controls having one vanishing component. The novelty of this work is that no condition is imposed on the control domain.
In this paper we deal with a robust Stackelberg strategy for the Navier--Stokes system. The scheme is based in considering a robust control problem for the "follower control" and its associated disturbance function. Afterwards, we consider the notion of Stackelberg optimization (which is associated to the "leader control") in order to deduce a local null controllability result for the Navier--Stokes system.
The $\mathrm{3D}$ Navier--Stokes system, under Lions boundary conditions, is proven to be approximately controllable provided a suitable saturating set does exist. An explicit saturating set for $\mathrm{3D}$ rectangles is given.
An explicit saturating set consisting of eigenfunctions of Stokes operator in general 3D Cylinders is proposed. The existence of saturating sets implies the approximate controllability for Navier--Stokes equations in $\rm 3D$ Cylinders under Lions boundary conditions.
In this work, we investigate the small-time global exact controllability of the Navier-Stokes equation, both towards the null equilibrium state and towards weak trajectories. We consider a viscous incompressible fluid evolving within a smooth bounded domain, either in 2D or in 3D. The controls are only located on a small part of the boundary, intersecting all its connected components. On the remaining parts of the boundary, the fluid obeys a Navier slip-with-friction boundary condition. Even though viscous boundary layers appear near these uncontrolled boundaries, we prove that small-time glob…
We survey results of recent activity towards studying controllability and accessibility issues for equations of dynamics of incompressible fluids controlled by low-dimensional or, degenerate, forcing. New results concerning controllability of Navier-Stokes/Euler systems on two-dimensional sphere and on a generic two-dimensional domain are represented.
The goal of this article is to present a local exact controllability result for the 2 and 3-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations on a constant target trajectory when the controls act on the whole boundary. Our study is then based on the observability of the adjoint system of some linearized version of the system, which is analyzed thanks to a subsystem for which the coupling terms are somewhat weaker. In this step, we strongly use Carleman estimates in negative Sobolev spaces.
The paper is devoted to studying controllability properties for 3D Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain. We establish a sufficient condition under which the problem in question is exactly controllable in any finite-dimensional projection. Our sufficient condition is verified for any torus in $R^3$. The proofs are based on a development of a general approach introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev in the 2D case. As a simple consequence of the result on controllability, we show that the Cauchy problem for the 3D Navier-Stokes system has a unique strong solution for any initial function and a…
In this paper, we prove a local null controllability result for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations on a (smooth) bounded domain of R^3 with null Dirichlet boundary conditions. The control is distributed in an arbitrarily small nonempty open subset and has two vanishing components. J.-L. Lions and E. Zuazua proved that the linearized system is not necessarily null controllable even if the control is distributed on the entire domain, hence the standard linearization method fails. We use the return method together with a new algebraic method inspired by the works of M. Gromov and previ…
We study the local controllability properties of 2D and 3D bio-mimetic swimmers employing the change of their geometric shape to propel themselves in an incompressible fluid described by Navier-Stokes equations. It is assumed that swimmers' bodies consist of finitely many parts, identified with the fluid they occupy, that are subsequently linked by the rotational and elastic internal forces. These forces are explicitly described and serve as the means to affect the geometric configuration of swimmers' bodies. Similar models were previously investigated in [6]-[13].
In this article, we study the controllability issues of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert Equations (LLGEs), accompanied with non-zero exchange energy only, in an interval in one spatial dimension with Neumann boundary conditions. The paper is of twofold. In the first part of the paper, we study the controllability issues of the LLGEs. The control force acting here is degenerate i.e., it acts through a few numbers of low mode frequencies. We exploit the Fourier series expansion of the solution. We borrow methods of differential geometric control theory (Lie bracket generating property) to establish …
In this proceeding we expose a particular case of a recent result obtained by the authors regarding the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a smooth bounded and simply connected bounded domain, either in 2D or in 3D, with a Navier slip-with-friction boundary condition except on a part of the boundary. This under-determination encodes that one has control over the remaining part of the boundary. We prove that for any initial data, for any positive time, there exists a weak Leray solution which vanishes at this given time.
We study controllability issues for the Navier-Stokes Equation on a two dimensional rectangle with so-called Lions boundary conditions. Rewriting the Equation using a basis of harmonic functions we arrive to an infinite-dimensional system of ODEs. Methods of Geometric/Lie Algebraic Control Theory are used to prove controllability by means of low modes forcing of finite-dimensional Galerkin approximations of that system. Proving the continuity of the ``control $\mapsto$ solution'' map in the so-called relaxation metric we use it to prove both solid controllability on observed component and $\ma…
In this article, we study the null controllability of linearized compressible Navier-Stokes system in one and two dimension. We first study the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes system for non-barotropic fluid linearized around a constant steady state. We prove that the linearized system around $(\bar ρ,0,\bar θ)$, with $\bar ρ> 0,$ $ \bar θ> 0$ is not null controllable by localized interior control or by boundary control. But the system is null controllable by interior controls acting everywhere in the velocity and temperature equation for regular initial condition. We also prove tha…
We study the strong structural controllability (SSC) of diffusively coupled networks, where the external control inputs are injected to only some nodes, namely the leaders. For such systems, one measure of controllability is the dimension of strong structurally controllable subspace, which is equal to the smallest possible rank of controllability matrix under admissible (positive) coupling weights. In this paper, we compare two tight lower bounds on the dimension of strong structurally controllable subspace: one based on the distances of followers to leaders, and the other based on the graph c…
We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in a rectangle with the usual no-slip boundary condition prescribed on the upper and lower boundaries. We prove that for any positive time, for any finite energy initial data, there exist controls on the left and right boundaries and a distributed force, which can be chosen arbitrarily small in any Sobolev norm in space, such that the corresponding solution is at rest at the given final time. Our work improves earlier results where the distributed force is small only in a negative Sobolev space. It is a further step towards an answer to …
This paper continues our study of the interconnection between controllability and mixing properties of random dynamical systems. We begin with an abstract result showing that the approximate controllability to a point and a local stabilisation property imply the uniqueness of a stationary measure and exponential mixing in the dual-Lipschitz metric. This result is then applied to the 2D Navier-Stokes system driven by a random force acting through the boundary. A by-product of our analysis is the local exponential stabilisation of the boundary-driven Navier-Stokes system by a regular boundary co…
In this paper we study the controllability of a coupled Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes system. We show the local exact controllability of the system around some particular trajectories. The proof relies on new Carleman inequalities for the chemotaxis part and some improved Carleman inequalities for the Stokes system.
We consider a system of two parabolic equations with a forcing term present in one equation and a cubic coupling term in the other one. We prove that the system is locally null controllable.
We provide explicit time-varying feedback laws that locally stabilize the two dimensional internal controlled incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in arbitrarily small time. We also obtain quantitative rapid stabilization via stationary feedback laws, as well as quantitative null controllability with explicit controls having $e^{C/T}$ costs.
In this article, we study the boundary null-controllability properties of the one-dimensional linearized (around $(Q_0,V_0)$ with constants $Q_0>0, V_0>0$) compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the interval $(0,1)$ when a control function is acting either on the density or velocity component at one end of the interval. We first prove that the linearized system, with a Dirichlet boundary control on the density component and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on the velocity component, is null-controllable in $H^s_{per}(0,1) \times L^2(0,1)$ for any $s > 1/2$ provided the time $T > 1$, …
The paper presents a new state estimation algorithm for a bilinear equation representing the Fourier- Galerkin (FG) approximation of the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations on a torus in R2. This state equation is subject to uncertain but bounded noise in the input (Kolmogorov forcing) and initial conditions, and its output is incomplete and contains bounded noise. The algorithm designs a time-dependent gain such that the estimation error converges to zero exponentially. The sufficient condition for the existence of the gain are formulated in the form of algebraic Riccati equations. To demonstrate th…
We study the problems of controllability and ergodicity of the system of 3D primitive equations modeling large-scale oceanic and atmospheric motions. The system is driven by an additive force acting only on a finite number of Fourier modes in the temperature equation. We first show that the velocity and temperature components of the equations can be simultaneously approximately controlled to arbitrary position in the phase space. The proof is based on Agrachev-Sarychev type geometric control approach. Next, we study the controllability of the linearisation of primitive equations around a non-s…
The ergodic properties of the randomly forced Navier-Stokes system have been extensively studied in the literature during the last two decades. The problem has always been considered in bounded domains, in order to have, for example, suitable spectral properties for the Stokes operator, to ensure some compactness properties for the resolving operator of the system and the associated functional spaces, etc. In the present paper, we consider the Navier-Stokes system in an unbounded domain satisfying the Poincaré inequality. Assuming that the system is perturbed by a bounded non-degenerate noise,…
- We discuss the approximation of distributed null controls for partial differential equations. The main purpose is to determine an approximation of controls that drives the solution from a prescribed initial state at the initial time to the zero target at a prescribed final time. As a non trivial example, we mainly focus on the Stokes system for which the existence of square-integrable controls have been obtained in [Fursikov \& Imanuvilov, Controllability of Evolution Equations, 1996]) via Carleman type estimates. We introduce a least-squares formulation of the controllability problem, and w…
We consider randomly forced 2D Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain with smooth boundary. It is assumed that the random perturba- tion is non-degenerate, and its law is periodic in time and has a support localised with respect to space and time. Concerning the unperturbed problem, we assume that it is approximately controllable in infinite time by an external force whose support is included in that of the random force. Under these hypotheses, we prove that the Markov process generated by the restriction of solutions to the instants of time proportional to the period possesses a unique s…
This paper is devoted to a description of a general approach introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev in 2005 for studying some control problems for Navier-Stokes equations. The example of a 1D Burgers equation is used to illustrate the main ideas. We begin with a short discussion of the Cauchy problem and establish a continuity property for the resolving operator. We next turn to the property of approximate controllability and prove that it can be achieved by a two-dimensional external force. Finally, we investigate a stronger property, when the approximate controllability and the exact controllab…
