Solutions to Monge-Kantorovich equations, expressing optimality condition in mass transportation problem with cost equal to distance, are stationary points of a critical-slope model for sand surface evolution. Using a dual variational formulation of sand model, we compute both the optimal transport density and Kantorovich potential as a stationary limit of evolving sand flux and sand surface, respectively.
The paper is accompanying "A general Duality Theorem for the Monge-Kantorovich Transport Problem". We explain the methods used in this article in an elementary setting and present two examples complementing the results obtained therein.
It is shown that the problem of designing a two-reflector system transforming a plane wave front with given intensity into an output plane front with prescribed output intensity can be formulated and solved as the Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem.
This note establishes that a generalization of $c$-cyclical monotonicity from the Monge-Kantorovich problem with two marginals gives rise to a sufficient condition for optimality also in the multi-marginal version of that problem. To obtain the result, the cost function is assumed to be bounded by a sum of integrable functions. The proof rests on ideas from martingale transport.
The famous Afriat's theorem from the theory of revealed preferences establishes necessary and suffient conditions for existence of utility function for a given set of choices and prices. The result on existence of a {\it homogeneous} utility function can be considered as a particular fact of the Monge-Kantorovich mass transportation theory. In this paper we explain this viewpoint and discuss some related questions.
The Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem is equivalently formulated as a convex optimization problem for a potential function. In the light of this formulation an interative algorithm is developed for determining the solution. It is a gradient flow algorithm and each iterate solves a linear elliptic equation. Well-posedness and convergence of the proposed method are analyzed and numerical findings are presented.
The Monge-Kantorovich mass-transportation problem has been shown to be fundamental for various basic problems in analysis and geometry in recent years. Shen and Zheng (2010) proposed a probability method to transform the celebrated Monge-Kantorovich problem in a bounded region of the Euclidean plane into a Dirichlet boundary problem associated to a nonlinear elliptic equation. Their results are original and sound, however, their arguments leading to the main results are skipped and difficult to follow. In the present paper, we adopt a different approach and give a short and easy-followed detai…
We prove that $c$-cyclically monotone transport plans $π$ optimize the Monge-Kantorovich transportation problem under an additional measurability condition. This measurability condition is always satisfied for finitely valued, lower semi-continuous cost functions. In particular, this yields a positive answer to Problem 2.25 in C. Villani's book. We emphasize that we do not need any regularity conditions as were imposed in the previous literature.
We present a general method, based on conjugate duality, for solving a convex minimization problem without assuming unnecessary topological restrictions on the constraint set. It leads to dual equalities and characterizations of the minimizers without constraint qualification. As an example of application, the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport problem is solved in great detail. In particular, the optimal transport plans are characterized without restriction. This characterization improves the already existing literature on the subject.
The Monge-Kantorovich problem is revisited by means of a variant of the saddle-point method without appealing to $c$-conjugates. A new abstract characterization of the optimal plans is obtained in the case where the cost function takes infinite values. It leads us to new explicit sufficient and necessary optimality conditions. As by-products, we obtain a new proof of the well-known Kantorovich dual equality and an improvement of the convergence of the minimizing sequences.
We shall present a measure theoretical approach for which together with the Kantorovich duality provide an efficient tool to study the optimal transport problem. Specifically, we study the support of optimal plans where the cost function does not satisfy the classical twist condition in the two marginal problem as well as in the multi-marginal case when twistedness is limited to certain subsets.
The dual attainment of the Monge--Kantorovich transport problem is analyzed in a general setting. The spaces $X, Y$ are assumed to be polish and equipped with Borel probability measures $μ$ and $ν$. The transport cost function $c:\XY \to [0,\infty]$ is assumed to be Borel measurable. We show that a dual optimizer always exists, provided we interpret it as a projective limit of certain finitely additive measures. Our methods are functional analytic and rely on Fenchel's perturbation technique.
The notion of Nash equilibria plays a key role in the analysis of strategic interactions in the framework of $N$ player games. Analysis of Nash equilibria is however a complex issue when the number of players is large. In this article we emphasize the role of optimal transport theory in: 1) the passage from Nash to Cournot-Nash equilibria as the number of players tends to infinity, 2) the analysis of Cournot-Nash equilibria.
Let $X$ a probability measure space and $ψ_1....ψ_N$ measurable, real valued functions on $X$. Consider all possible partitions of $X$ into $N$ disjoint subdomains $X_i$ on which $\int_{X_i}ψ_i$ are prescribed. We address the question of characterizing the set $(m_1,,,m_N) \in \R^N$ for which there exists a partition $X_1, ... X_N$ of $X$ satisfying $\int_{X_i}ψ_i= m_i$ and discuss some optimization problems on this set of partitions. The relation of this problem to semi-discrete version of optimal mass transportation is discussed as well.
The duality theory of the Monge--Kantorovich transport problem is analyzed in a general setting. The spaces $X, Y$ are assumed to be polish and equipped with Borel probability measures $μ$ and $ν$. The transport cost function $c:X\times Y \to [0,\infty]$ is assumed to be Borel. Our main result states that in this setting there is no duality gap, provided the optimal transport problem is formulated in a suitably relaxed way. The relaxed transport problem is defined as the limiting cost of the partial transport of masses $1-\varepsilon$ from $(X,μ)$ to $(Y, ν)$, as $\varepsilon >0$ tends to zero…
The aim of this article is to show that the Monge-Kantorovich problem is the limit of a sequence of entropy minimization problems when a fluctuation parameter tends down to zero. We prove the convergence of the entropic values to the optimal transport cost as the fluctuations decrease to zero, and we also show that the limit points of the entropic minimizers are optimal transport plans. We investigate the dynamic versions of these problems by considering random paths and describe the connections between the dynamic and static problems. The proofs are essentially based on convex and functional …
We study the Kantorovich-Rubinstein transhipment problem when the difference between the source and the target is not anymore a balanced measure but belongs to a suitable subspace $X(Ω)$ of first order distribution. A particular subclass $X_0^\sharp(Ω)$ of such distributions will be considered which includes the infinite sums of dipoles $\sum_k(δ_{p_k}-δ_{n_k})$ studied in \cite{P1, P2}. In spite of this weakened regularity, it is shown that an optimal transport density still exists among nonnegative finite measures. Some geometric properties of the Banach spaces $X(Ω)$ and $X_0^\sharp(Ω)$ can…
It is known from clever mathematical examples \cite{Ca10} that the Monge ansatz may fail in continuous two-marginal optimal transport (alias optimal coupling alias optimal assignment) problems. Here we show that this effect already occurs for finite assignment problems with $N=3$ marginals, $\ell=3$ 'sites', and symmetric pairwise costs, with the values for $N$ and $\ell$ both being optimal. Our counterexample is a transparent consequence of the convex geometry of the set of symmetric Kantorovich plans for $N=\ell=3$, which -- as we show -- possess 22 extreme points, only 7 of which are Monge.…
A remarkable connection between optimal design and Monge transport was initiated in the years 1997 in the context of the minimal elastic compliance problem and where the euclidean metric cost was naturally involved. In this paper we present different variants in optimal design of mechanical structures, in particular focusing on the optimal pre-stressed elastic membrane problem. We show that the underlying metric cost is associated with an unknown maximal monotone map which maximizes the Monge-Kantorovich distance between two measures. In parallel with the classical duality theory leading to ex…
This paper mainly investigates the approximation of a global maximizer of the 1-D Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem through the approach of nonlinear differential equations with Dirichlet boundary. Using an approximation mechanism, the primal maximization problem can be transformed into a sequence of minimization problems. By applying the canonical duality theory, one is able to derive a sequence of analytic solutions for the minimization problems. In the final analysis, the convergence of the sequence to a global maximizer of the primal Monge-Kantorovich problem will be demonstrated.
It is well-known that duality in the Monge-Kantorovich transport problem holds true provided that the cost function $c:X\times Y\to [0,\infty]$ is lower semi-continuous or finitely valued, but it may fail otherwise. We present a suitable notion of \emph{rectificaton} $c_r$ of the cost $c$, so that the Monge-Kantorovich duality holds true replacing $c$ by $c_r$. In particular, passing from $c$ to $c_r$ only changes the value of the primal Monge-Kantorovich problem. Finally, the rectified function $c_r $ is lower semi-continuous as soon as $X$ and $Y$ are endowed with proper topologies, thus emp…
In this paper, we give a new characterization of the cut locus of a point on a compact Riemannian manifold as the zero set of the optimal transport density solution of the Monge-Kantorovich equations, a PDE formulation of the optimal transport problem with cost equal to the geodesic distance. Combining this result with an optimal transport numerical solver based on the so-called dynamical Monge-Kantorovich approach, we propose a novel framework for the numerical approximation of the cut locus of a point in a manifold. We show the applicability of the proposed method on a few examples settled o…
We propose a model to describe the optimal distributions of residents and services in a prescribed urban area. The cost functional takes into account the transportation costs (according to a Monge--Kantorovich-type criterion) and two additional terms which penalize concentration of residents and dispersion of services. The tools we use are the Monge--Kantorovich mass transportation theory and the theory of nonconvex functionals defined on measures.
We propose an extension of the computational fluid mechanics approach to the Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem, which was developed by Benamou-Brenier. Our extension allows optimal transfer of unnormalized and unequal masses. We obtain a one-parameter family of simple modifications of the formulation in [4]. This leads us to a new Monge-Ampere type equation and a new Kantorovich duality formula. These can be solved efficiently by, for example, the Chambolle-Pock primal-dual algorithm. This solution to the extended mass transfer problem gives us a simple metric for computing the distance …
Let $X,Y$ be two finite sets of points having $\#X = m$ and $\#Y = n$ points with $μ= (1/m) \sum_{i=1}^{m} δ_{x_i}$ and $ν= (1/n) \sum_{j=1}^{n} δ_{y_j}$ being the associated uniform probability measures. A result of Birkhoff implies that if $m = n$, then the Kantorovich problem has a solution which also solves the Monge problem: optimal transport can be realized with a bijection $π: X \rightarrow Y$. This is impossible when $m \neq n$. We observe that when $m \neq n$, there exists a solution of the Kantorovich problem such that the mass of each point in $X$ is moved to at most $n/\gcd(m,n)$ d…
This paper is devoted to the study of the Monge-Kantorovich theory of optimal mass transport and its applications, in the special case of one-dimensional and circular distributions. More precisely, we study the Monge-Kantorovich distances between discrete sets of points on the unit circle, in the case where the ground distance between two points x and y is defined as h(d(x,y)), where d is the geodesic distance on the circle and h a convex and increasing function. We first prove that computing a Monge-Kantorovich distance between two given sets of pairwise different points boils down to cut the…
An analogue of the quadratic Wasserstein (or Monge-Kantorovich) distance between Borel probability measures on $\mathbf{R}^d$ has been defined in [F. Golse, C. Mouhot, T. Paul: Commun. Math. Phys. 343 (2015), 165-205] for density operators on $L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$, and used to estimate the convergence rate of various asymptotic theories in the context of quantum mechanics. The present work proves a Kantorovich type duality theorem for this quantum variant of the Monge-Kantorovich or Wasserstein distance, and discusses the structure of optimal quantum couplings. Specifically, we prove that optima…
The Monge-Kantorovich problem for the infinite Wasserstein distance presents several peculiarities. Among them the lack of convexity and then of a direct duality. We study in dimension 1 the dual problem introduced by Barron, Bocea and Jensen. We construct a couple of Kantorovich potentials which is "as less trivial as possible". More precisely, we build a potential which is non constant around any point that the plan which is locally optimal moves at maximal distance. As an application, we show that the set of points which are displaced to maximal distance by a locally optimal transport plan …
A probabilistic method for solving the Monge-Kantorovich mass transport problem on $R^d$ is introduced. A system of empirical measures of independent particles is built in such a way that it obeys a doubly indexed large deviation principle with an optimal transport cost as its rate function. As a consequence, new approximation results for the optimal cost function and the optimal transport plans are derived. They follow from the Gamma-convergence of a sequence of normalized relative entropies toward the optimal transport cost. A wide class of cost functions including the standard power cost fu…
