We show that several standard associative quantizations in mathematical physics can be expressed as cochain module-algebra twists in the spirit of Moyal products at least to $O(\hbar^3)$, but to achieve this we twist not by a 2-cocycle but by a 2-cochain. This implies a hidden nonassociavitity not visible in the algebra itself but present in its deeper noncommutative differential geometry, a phenomenon first seen in our previous work on semiclassicalisation of differential structures. The quantisations are induced by a classical group covariance and include: enveloping algebras $U_\hbar(g)$ as quantisations of $g^*$, a Fedosov-type quantisation of the sphere $S^2$ under a Lorentz group covariance, the Mackey quantisation of homogeneous spaces, and the standard quantum groups $C_q[G]$. We also consider the differential quantisation of $R^n$ for a given symplectic connection as part of our semiclassical analysis and we outline a proposal for the Dirac operator.
Many quantum groups and quantum spaces of interest can be obtained by cochain (but not cocycle) twist from their corresponding classical object. This failure of the cocycle condition implies a hidden nonassociativity in the noncommutative geometry already known to be visible at the level of differential forms. We extend the cochain twist framework to connections and Riemannian structures and provide examples including twist of the $S^7$ coordinate algebra to a nonassociative hyperbolic geometry in the same category as that of the octonions.
We show how to do gauge theory on the octonions and other nonassociative algebras such as `fuzzy $R^4$' models proposed in string theory. We use the theory of quasialgebras obtained by cochain twist introduced previously. The gauge theory in this case is twisting-equivalent to usual gauge theory on the underlying classical space. We give a general U(1)-Yang-Mills example for any quasi-algebra and a full description of the moduli space of flat connections in this theory for the cube $Z_2^3$ and hence for the octonions. We also obtain further results about the octonions themselves; an explicit M…
We describe quasi-Hopf twist deformations of flat closed string compactifications with non-geometric R-flux using a suitable cochain twist, and construct nonassociative deformations of fields and differential calculus. We report on our new findings in using this formalism to construct perturbative nonassociative field theories on these backgrounds. We describe the modifications to the usual classification of Feynman diagrams into planar and non-planar graphs. The example of phi(4) theory is studied in detail and the one-loop contributions to the two-point function are calculated.
We use monoidal category methods to study the noncommutative geometry of nonassociative algebras obtained by a Drinfeld-type cochain twist. These are the so-called quasialgebras and include the octonions as braided-commutative but nonassociative coordinate rings, as well as quasialgebra versions $\CC_{q}(G)$ of the standard q-deformation quantum groups. We introduce the notion of ribbon algebras in the category, which are algebras equipped with a suitable generalised automorphism $σ$, and obtain the required generalisation of cyclic cohomology. We show that this \emph{braided cyclic cocohomolo…
We describe nonassociative deformations of geometry probed by closed strings in non-geometric flux compactifications of string theory. We show that these non-geometric backgrounds can be geometrised through the dynamics of open membranes whose boundaries propagate in the phase space of the target space compactification, equiped with a twisted Poisson structure. The effective membrane target space is determined by the standard Courant algebroid over the target space twisted by an abelian gerbe in momentum space. Quantization of the membrane sigma-model leads to a proper quantization of the non-…
We analyse the symmetries underlying nonassociative deformations of geometry in non-geometric R-flux compactifications which arise via T-duality from closed strings with constant geometric fluxes. Starting from the non-abelian Lie algebra of translations and Bopp shifts in phase space, together with a suitable cochain twist, we construct the quasi-Hopf algebra of symmetries that deforms the algebra of functions and the exterior differential calculus in the phase space description of nonassociative R-space. In this setting nonassociativity is characterised by the associator 3-cocycle which cont…
We systematically study noncommutative and nonassociative algebras A and their bimodules as algebras and bimodules internal to the representation category of a quasitriangular quasi-Hopf algebra. We enlarge the morphisms of the monoidal category of A-bimodules by internal homomorphisms, and describe explicitly their evaluation and composition morphisms. For braided commutative algebras A the full subcategory of symmetric A-bimodule objects is a braided closed monoidal category, from which we obtain an internal tensor product operation on internal homomorphisms. We describe how these structures…
Given an acyclic twisting cochain $π:C\to A$, from a curved dg coalgebra $C$ to a dg algebra $A$, we show that the associated twisted hom complex $\mathrm{Hom}^π_k(C,A)$ has cohomology equal to the Hochschild cohomology of $A$, as a graded ring. As a corollary we find that the Hochschild cohomology of a Koszul algebra $A$, along with its cup product, is a subquotient of the tensor product algebra $A^!\otimes A$ of $A$ with its Koszul dual.
Early in the history of higher homotopy algebra, it was realized that Massey products are homotopy invariants in a special sense, but it was the work of Tornike Kadeisvili that showed they were but a shadow of an A-infinity-structure on the homology of a differential graded algebra. Here we relate his work to that of Victor Gugenheim and K.T. (Chester) Chen. This paper is a personal tribute to Tornike and the Georgian school of homotopy theory as well as to Gugenheim and Chen, who unfortunately are not with us to appreciate this convergence.
We generalize the twisted quantum double model of topological orders in two dimensions to the case with boundaries by systematically constructing the boundary Hamiltonians. Given the bulk Hamiltonian defined by a gauge group $G$ and a three-cocycle in the third cohomology group of $G$ over $U(1)$, a boundary Hamiltonian can be defined by a subgroup $K$ of $G$ and a two-cochain in the second cochain group of $K$ over $U(1)$. The consistency between the bulk and boundary Hamiltonians is dictated by what we call the Frobenius condition that constrains the two-cochain given the three-cocyle. We of…
We develop quantization techniques for describing the nonassociative geometry probed by closed strings in flat non-geometric R-flux backgrounds M. Starting from a suitable Courant sigma-model on an open membrane with target space M, regarded as a topological sector of closed string dynamics in R-space, we derive a twisted Poisson sigma-model on the boundary of the membrane whose target space is the cotangent bundle T^*M and whose quasi-Poisson structure coincides with those previously proposed. We argue that from the membrane perspective the path integral over multivalued closed string fields …
We suggest a geometric approach to quantisation of the twisted Poisson structure underlying the dynamics of charged particles in fields of generic smooth distributions of magnetic charge, and dually of closed strings in locally non-geometric flux backgrounds, which naturally allows for representations of nonassociative magnetic translation operators. We show how one can use the 2-Hilbert space of sections of a bundle gerbe in a putative framework for canonical quantisation. We define a parallel transport on bundle gerbes on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and show that it naturally furnishes weak projective 2-…
Given an algebra with group $G$-action, we construct brace structures for its $G$-twisted Hochschild cochains. An an application, we construct $G$-Frobenius algebras for orbifold Landau-Ginzburg B-models and present explicit orbifold cup product formula for all invertible polynomials.
We describe the quantization of a four-dimensional locally non-geometric M-theory background dual to a twisted three-torus by deriving a phase space star product for deformation quantization of quasi-Poisson brackets related to the nonassociative algebra of octonions. The construction is based on a choice of $G_2$-structure which defines a nonassociative deformation of the addition law on the seven-dimensional vector space of Fourier momenta. We demonstrate explicitly that this star product reduces to that of the three-dimensional parabolic constant $R$-flux model in the contraction of M-theor…
One way to obtain Quantized Universal Enveloping Algebras (QUEAs) of non-semisimple Lie algebras is by contracting QUEAs of semisimple Lie algebras. We prove that every contracted QUEA in a certain class is a cochain twist of the corresponding undeformed universal envelope. Consequently, these contracted QUEAs possess a triangular quasi-Hopf algebra structure. As examples, we consider kappa-Poincare in 3 and 4 spacetime dimensions.
Two cochain complexes are constructed for an algebra A and a coalgebra C entwined with each other via the map $ψ:C\otimes A\to A\otimes C$. One complex is associated to an A-bimodule, the other to a C-bicomodule. In the former case the resulting complex can be considered as a $ψ$-twisted Hochschild complex of A, while for the latter one obtains a $ψ$-twist of the Cartier complex of C. The notion of a {\em weak comp algebra} is introduced by weakening the axioms of the Gerstenhaber comp algebra. It is shown that such a weak comp algebra is a cochain complex with two cup products that descend to…
We define and systematically study nonassociative C*-algebras as C*-algebras internal to a topological tensor category. We also offer a concrete approach to these C*-algebras, as G-invariant, norm closed *-subalgebras of bounded operators on a G-Hilbert space, with deformed composition product. Our central results are those of stabilization and Takai duality for (twisted) crossed products in this context.
A BiHom-associative algebra is a (nonassociative) algebra $A$ endowed with two commuting multiplicative linear maps $α,β\colon A\rightarrow A$ such that $α(a)(bc)=(ab)β(c)$, for all $a, b, c\in A$. This concept arose in the study of algebras in so-called group Hom-categories. In this paper, we introduce as well BiHom-Lie algebras (also by using the categorical approach) and BiHom-bialgebras. We discuss these new structures by presenting some basic properties and constructions (representations, twisted tensor products, smash products etc).
Noncommutative or `quantum' differential geometry has emerged in recent years as a process for quantizing not only a classical space into a noncommutative algebra (as familiar in quantum mechanics) but also differential forms, bundles and Riemannian structures at this level. The data for the algebra quantisation is a classical Poisson bracket, the data for the quantum differential forms is a Poisson-compatible connection it was recently shown that after this, classical data such as classical bundles, metrics etc. all become quantised in a canonical `functorial' way at least to 1st order in def…
We extend the classical characterization of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra g in terms of its Maurer-Cartan algebra-the familiar differential graded algebra of alternating forms on g with values in the ground field, endowed with the standard Lie algebra cohomology operator-to sh Lie-Rinehart algebras. To this end, we first develop a characterization of sh Lie-Rinehart algebras in terms of differential graded cocommutative coalgebras and Lie algebra twisting cochains that extends the nowadays standard characterization of an ordinary sh Lie algebra (equivalently: Linfty algebra) in terms of its…
