We show that a large class of right-angled Artin groups (in particular, those with planar complementary defining graph) can be embedded quasi-isometrically in pure braid groups and in the group of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the disk fixing the boundary (with respect to the $L^2$-norm metric); this extends results of Benaim and Gambaudo who gave quasi-isometric embeddings of $F\_n$ and $\Z^n$ for all $n>0$. As a consequence we are also able to embed a variety of Gromov hyperbolic groups quasi-isometrically in pure braid groups and in the diffeomorphism group of the disk. Examples include hyperbolic surface groups, some HNN-extensions of these along cyclic subgroups and the fundamental group of a certain closed hyperbolic 3-manifold.
For every compact surface $S$ of finite type (possibly with boundary components but without punctures), we show that when $n$ is sufficiently large there is no lift $σ$ of the surface braid group $B_n(S)$ to $\operatorname{Diff}(S,n)$, the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms preserving $n$ marked points and restricting to the identity on the boundary. Our methods are applied to give a new proof of Morita's non-lifting theorem in the best possible range. These techniques extend to the more general setting of spaces of codimension-$2$ embeddings, and we obtain corresponding results for spherical moti…
We show that the group cohomology of the diffeomorphisms of the disk with $n$ punctures has the cohomology of the braid group of $n$ strands as the summand. As an application of this method, we also prove that there is no cohomological obstruction to lifting the "standard" embedding $\mathrm{Br}_{2g+2}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{Mod}_{g,2}$ to a group homomorphism between diffeomorphism groups.
We prove that an arbitrary right-angled Artin group $G$ admits a quasi-isometric group embedding into a right-angled Artin group defined by the opposite graph of a tree. Consequently, $G$ admits quasi-isometric group embeddings into a pure braid group and into the area-preserving diffeomorphism groups of the 2--disk and the 2--sphere, answering questions due to Crisp--Wiest and M. Kapovich. Another corollary is that a pure braid group contains a closed hyperbolic manifold group as a quasi-isometrically embedded subgroup up to dimension eight. Finally, we show that the isomorphism problem, conj…
We prove a number of new results on the large-scale geometry of the $L^p$-metrics on the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of each orientable surface. Our proofs use in a key way the Fulton-MacPherson type compactification of the configuration space of $n$ points on the surface due to Axelrod-Singer and Kontsevich. This allows us to apply the Schwarz-Milnor lemma to configuration spaces, a natural approach which we carry out successfully for the first time. As sample results, we prove that all right-angled Artin groups admit quasi-isometric embeddings into the group of area-preserving d…
Given a knot in $S^3$, one can associate to it a surface diffeomorphism in two different ways. First, an arbitrary knot in $S^{3}$ can be represented by braids, which can be thought of as diffeomorphisms of punctured disks. Second, if the knot is fibered -- that is, if its complement fibers over $S^1$ -- one can consider the monodromy of the fibration. One can ask to what extent properties of these surface diffeomorphisms dictate topological properties of the corresponding knot. In this article we collect observations, conjectures, and questions addressing this, from both the braid perspective…
Area and orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the standard 2-disc, referred to as symplectomorphisms of $\mathbb{D}^{2}$, allow decompositions in terms of positive twist diffeomorphisms. Using the latter decomposition we utilize the Conley index theory of discrete braid classes as introduced in [Ghrist et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math., 331(11), 2000, Invent. Math., 152(2), 2003] in order to obtain a Morse type forcing theory of periodic points: a priori information about periodic points determines a mapping class which may force additional periodic points.
We study quasi-morphisms on the groups Pn of pure braids on n strings and on the group D of compactly supported area-preserving diffeomorphisms of an open two-dimensional disc. We show that it is possible to build quasi-morphisms on Pn by using knot invariants which satisfy some special properties. In particular, we study quasi-morphisms which come from knot Floer homology and Khovanov-type homology. We then discuss possible variations of the Gambaudo-Ghys construction, using the above quasi-morphisms on Pn to build quasi-morphisms on the group D of diffeomorphisms of a 2-disc.
Area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-disc can be regarded as time-1 maps of (non-autonomous) Hamiltonian flows on solid tori, periodic flow-lines of which define braid (conjugacy) classes, up to full twists. We examine the dynamics relative to such braid classes and define a braid Floer homology. This refinement of the Floer homology originally used for the Arnol'd Conjecture yields a Morse-type forcing theory for periodic points of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-disc based on braiding. Contributions of this paper include (1) a monotonicity lemma for the behavior of the nonlinear C…
The group of $\mathcal C^1$-diffeomorphisms of any sparse Cantor subset of a manifold is countable and discrete (possibly trivial). Thompson's groups come out of this construction when we consider central ternary Cantor subsets of an interval. Brin's higher dimensional generalizations $nV$ of Thompson's group $V$ arise when we consider products of central ternary Cantor sets. We derive that the $\mathcal C^2$-smooth mapping class group of a sparse Cantor sphere pair is a discrete countable group and produce this way versions of the braided Thompson groups.
One of the most interesting questions about a group is if its word problem can be solved and how. The word problem in the braid group is of particular interest to topologists, algebraists and geometers, and is the target of intensive current research. We look at the braid group from a topological point of view (rather than a geometrical one). The braid group is defined by the action of diffeomorphisms on the fundamental group of a punctured disk. We exploit the topological definition of the braid group in order to give a new approach for solving its word problem. Our algorithm is faster, in co…
Let Σ_g be a closed orientable surface let Diff_0(Σ_g; area) be the identity component of the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of Σ_g. In this work we present an extension of Gambaudo-Ghys construction to the case of a closed hyperbolic surface Σ_g, i.e. we show that every non-trivial homogeneous quasi-morphism on the braid group on n strings of Σ_g defines a non-trivial homogeneous quasi-morphism on the group Diff_0(Σ_g; area). As a consequence we give another proof of the fact that the space of homogeneous quasi-morphisms on Diff_0(Σ_g; area) is infinite dimensional. Let Ham(Σ_g) be …
We show that no finite index subgroup of a sufficiently complicated mapping class group or braid group can act faithfully by $C^{1+\mathrm{bv}}$ diffeomorphisms on the circle, which generalizes a result of Farb-Franks, and which parallels a result of Ghys and Burger-Monod concerning differentiable actions of higher rank lattices on the circle. This answers a question of Farb, which has its roots in the work of Nielsen. We prove this result by showing that if a right-angled Artin group acts faithfully by $C^{1+\mathrm{bv}}$ diffeomorphisms on a compact one-manifold, then its defining graph has …
Let $M$ be a compact surface without boundary, and $n\geq 2$. We analyse the quotient group $B_n(M)/Γ_2(P_n(M))$ of the surface braid group $B_{n}(M)$ by the commutator subgroup $Γ_2(P_n(M))$ of the pure braid group $P_{n}(M)$. If $M$ is different from the $2$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, we prove that $B_n(M)/Γ_2(P_n(M))$ is isomorphic rho $P_n(M)/Γ_2(P_n(M)) \rtimes_φ S_n$, and that $B_n(M)/Γ_2(P_n(M))$ is a crystallographic group if and only if $M$ is orientable. If $M$ is orientable, we prove a number of results regarding the structure of $B_n(M)/Γ_2(P_n(M))$. We characterise the finite-order el…
We show that for each $p \geq 1,$ the $L^p$-metric on the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere has infinite diameter. This solves the last open case of a conjecture of Shnirelman from 1985. Our methods extend to yield stronger results on the large-scale geometry of the corresponding metric space, completing an answer to a question of Kapovich from 2012. Our proof uses configuration spaces of points on the two-sphere, quasi-morphisms, optimally chosen braid diagrams, and, as a key element, the cross-ratio map $X_4(\mathbb{C} P^1) \to \mathcal{M}_{0,4} \cong \mathbb{C} P^1 …
Purpose of the Conference article, intended for a wider audience, is to introduce concepts and techniques used by Bronislaw Wajnryb and the author in order to show the diffeomorphism of certain elementary algebraic surfaces, called ABC surfaces, which are not deformation equivalent. In the first part are recalled the concepts of connected sum, surgeries, Poincare' group, Braids, Riemann surfaces and Dehn's Mapping class group. Then the topics become more advanced, including Lefschetz fibrations, ABC surfaces, symplectic fibrations and braid monodromy.
We show that $\mathbb{C}^2$ contains pairs of properly embedded, smooth complex curves that are isotopic through homeomorphisms but not diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$. The construction is based on realizing corks as branched covers of holomorphic disks in the 4-ball. These disks can also be described using exotic factorizations of quasipositive braids.
Given a manifold $M$ and a point in its interior, the point-pushing map describes a diffeomorphism that pushes the point along a closed path. This defines a homomorphism from the fundamental group of $M$ to the group of isotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of $M$ that fix the basepoint. This map is well-studied in dimension $d = 2$ and is part of the Birman exact sequence. Here we study, for any $d \geqslant 3$ and $k \geqslant 1$, the map from the $k$-th braid group of $M$ to the group of homotopy classes of homotopy equivalences of the $k$-punctured manifold $M \smallsetminus z$, and analyse i…
We study some aspects of the geometric representation theory of the Thompson and Neretin groups, suggested by their analogies with the diffeomorphism groups of the circle. We prove that the Burau representation of the Artin braid groups extends to a mapping class group $A_T$ related to Thompson's group $T$ by a short exact sequence $B_{\infty}\hookrightarrow A_T\to T$, where $B_{\infty}$ is the infinite braid group. This {\it non-commutative} extension abelianises to a central extension $0\to \Z\to A_T/[B_{\infty},B_{\infty}]\to T\to 1$ detecting the {\it discrete} version $\bar{gv}$ of the Bo…
