Given a sample from a discretely observed compound Poisson process, we consider estimation of the density of the jump sizes. We propose a kernel type nonparametric density estimator and study its asymptotic properties. An order bound for the bias and an asymptotic expansion of the variance of the estimator are given. Pointwise weak consistency and asymptotic normality are established. The results show that, asymptotically, the estimator behaves very much like an ordinary kernel estimator.
Assuming that a stochastic process $X=(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ is a sum of a compound Poisson process $Y=(Y_t)_{t\geq 0}$ with known intensity $λ$ and unknown jump size density $f,$ and an independent Brownian motion $Z=(Z_t)_{t\geq 0},$ we consider the problem of nonparametric estimation of $f$ from low frequency observations from $X.$ The estimator of $f$ is constructed via Fourier inversion and kernel smoothing. Our main result deals with asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator at a fixed point.
Noncommutative harmonic analysis is used to solve a nonparametric estimation problem stated in terms of compound Poisson processes on compact Lie groups. This problem of decompounding is a generalization of a similar classical problem. The proposed solution is based on a char- acteristic function method. The treated problem is important to recent models of the physical inverse problem of multiple scattering.
We introduce a new procedure to select the optimal cutoff parameter for Fourier density estimators that leads to adaptive rate optimal estimators, up to a logarithmic factor. This adaptive procedure applies for different inverse problems. We illustrate it on two classical examples: deconvolution and decompounding, i.e. non-parametric estimation of the jump density of a compound Poisson process from the observation of n increments of length $Δ$ > 0. For this latter example, we first build an estimator for which we provide an upper bound for its L 2-risk that is valid simultaneously for sampling…
This paper concerns the estimation of the regression function at a given point in nonparametric heteroscedastic models with Gaussian noise or with noise having unknown distribution. In the two cases an asymptotically efficient kernel estimator is constructed for the minimax absolute error risk.
An aggregated method of nonparametric estimators based on time-domain and state-domain estimators is proposed and studied. To attenuate the curse of dimensionality, we propose a factor modeling strategy. We first investigate the asymptotic behavior of nonparametric estimators of the volatility matrix in the time domain and in the state domain. Asymptotic normality is separately established for nonparametric estimators in the time domain and state domain. These two estimators are asymptotically independent. Hence, they can be combined, through a dynamic weighting scheme, to improve the efficien…
We investigate nonparametric estimation of a monotone baseline hazard and a decreasing baseline density within the Cox model. Two estimators of a nondecreasing baseline hazard function are proposed. We derive the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator and consider a Grenander type estimator, defined as the left-hand slope of the greatest convex minorant of the Breslow estimator. We demonstrate that the two estimators are strong consistent and asymptotically equivalent and derive their common limit distribution at a fixed point. Both estimators of a nonincreasing baseline hazard and their a…
A Bayesian nonparametric estimator to entropy is proposed. The derivation of the new estimator relies on using the Dirichlet process and adapting the well-known frequentist estimators of Vasicek (1976) and Ebrahimi, Pflughoeft and Soofi (1994). Several theoretical properties, such as consistency, of the proposed estimator are obtained. The quality of the proposed estimator has been investigated through several examples, in which it exhibits excellent performance.
For the problem of nonparametric estimation of signal in Gaussian noise we point out the strong asymptotically minimax estimators on maxisets for linear estimators (see \cite{ker93,rio}). It turns out that the order of rates of convergence of Pinsker estimator on this maxisets is worse than the order of rates of convergence for the class of linear estimators considered on this maxisets. We show that balls in Sobolev spaces are maxisets for Pinsker estimators.
We derive asymptotic normality of kernel type deconvolution density estimators. In particular we consider deconvolution problems where the known component of the convolution has a symmetric lambda-stable distribution, 0<lambda<= 2. It turns out that the limit behavior changes if the exponent parameter lambda passes the value one, the case of Cauchy deconvolution.
This paper establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for the asymptotic normality of the nonparametric estimator of sample coverage proposed by Good [Biometrica 40 (1953) 237--264]. This new necessary and sufficient condition extends the validity of the asymptotic normality beyond the previously proven cases.
We provide new asymptotic theory for kernel density estimators, when these are applied to autoregressive processes exhibiting moderate deviations from a unit root. This fills a gap in the existing literature, which has to date considered only nearly integrated and stationary autoregressive processes. These results have applications to nonparametric predictive regression models. In particular, we show that the null rejection probability of a nonparametric t test is controlled uniformly in the degree of persistence of the regressor. This provides a rigorous justification for the validity of the …
In this paper, we introduce a new estimator for the emission densities of a nonparametric hidden Markov model. It is adaptive and minimax with respect to each state's regularity--as opposed to globally minimax estimators, which adapt to the worst regularity among the emission densities. Our method is based on Goldenshluger and Lepski's methodology. It is computationally efficient and only requires a family of preliminary estimators, without any restriction on the type of estimators considered. We present two such estimators that allow to reach minimax rates up to a logarithmic term: a spectral…
We study a class of nonlinear nonparametric inverse problems. Specifically, we propose a nonparametric estimator of the dynamics of a monotonically increasing trajectory defined on a finite time interval. Under suitable regularity conditions, we prove consistency of the proposed estimator and show that in terms of $L^2$-loss, the optimal rate of convergence for the proposed estimator is the same as that for the estimation of the derivative of a trajectory. This is a new contribution to the area of nonlinear nonparametric inverse problems. We conduct a simulation study to examine the finite sam…
In this paper, we consider moderate deviations for Good's coverage estimator. The moderate deviation principle and the self-normalized moderate deviation principle for Good's coverage estimator are established. The results are also applied to the hypothesis testing problem and the confidence interval for the coverage.
A new nonparametric estimator of the local Hurst function of a multifractional Gaussian process based on the increment ratio (IR) statistic is defined. In a general frame, the point-wise and uniform weak and strong consistency and a multidimensional central limit theorem for this estimator are established. Similar results are obtained for a refinement of the generalized quadratic variations (QV) estimator. The example of the multifractional Brownian motion is studied in detail. A simulation study is included showing that the IR-estimator is more accurate than the QV-estimator.
In this paper, we investigate a nonparametric approach to provide a recursive estimator of the transition density of a non-stationary piecewise-deterministic Markov process, from only one observation of the path within a long time. In this framework, we do not observe a Markov chain with transition kernel of interest. Fortunately, one may write the transition density of interest as the ratio of the invariant distributions of two embedded chains of the process. Our method consists in estimating these invariant measures. We state a result of consistency and a central limit theorem under some gen…
In several different fields, there is interest in analyzing the upper or lower tail quantile of the underlying distribution rather than mean or center quantile. However, the investigation of the tail quantile is difficult because of data sparsity. In this paper, we attempt to develop nonparametric quantile regression for the extremal quantile level. In extremal quantile regression, there are two types of technical conditions of the order of convergence of the quantile level: intermediate order or extreme order. For the intermediate order quantile, the ordinary nonparametric estimator is used. …
In this study, we develop an asymptotic theory of nonparametric regression for a locally stationary functional time series. First, we introduce the notion of a locally stationary functional time series (LSFTS) that takes values in a semi-metric space. Then, we propose a nonparametric model for LSFTS with a regression function that changes smoothly over time. We establish the uniform convergence rates of a class of kernel estimators, the Nadaraya-Watson (NW) estimator of the regression function, and a central limit theorem of the NW estimator.
A broad class of smooth, possibly data-adaptive nonparametric copula estimators that contains empirical Bernstein copulas introduced by Sancetta and Satchell (and thus the empirical beta copula proposed by Segers, Sibuya and Tsukahara) is studied. Within this class, a subclass of estimators that depend on a scalar parameter determining the amount of marginal smoothing and a functional parameter controlling the shape of the smoothing region is specifically considered. Empirical investigations of the influence of these parameters suggest to focus on two particular data-adaptive smooth copula est…
We discuss nonparametric tests for parametric specifications of regression quantiles. The test is based on the comparison of parametric and nonparametric fits of these quantiles. The nonparametric fit is a Nadaraya-Watson quantile smoothing estimator. An asymptotic treatment of the test statistic requires the development of new mathematical arguments. An approach that makes only use of plugging in a Bahadur expansion of the nonparametric estimator is not satisfactory. It requires too strong conditions on the dimension and the choice of the bandwidth. Our alternative mathematical approach requi…
We study the nonparametric estimators of the infinitesimal coefficients of the second-order jump-diffusion models. Under the mild conditions, we obtain the weak consistency and the asymptotic normalities of the estimators.
In this article, we consider a useful product-limit estimator of distribution function proposed by Huang & Qin(2011) when the observations are subject to length-biased and right-censored data. The estimator retains the simple closed-form expression of the truncation product-limit estimator with some good properties. An almost sure representation for the estimator is obtained which can be used to derive many properties of functional statistics based on this product-limit estimator. The rate for the remainder in the representation is of order $O(n^{-3/4}(\log(n)^{3/4}) $ a.s.
This paper is concerned with nonparametric estimation of the Lévy density of a pure jump Lévy process. The sample path is observed at $n$ discrete instants with fixed sampling interval. We construct a collection of estimators obtained by deconvolution methods and deduced from appropriate estimators of the characteristic function and its first derivative. We obtain a bound for the ${\mathbb L}^2$-risk, under general assumptions on the model. Then we propose a penalty function that allows to build an adaptive estimator. The risk bound for the adaptive estimator is obtained under additional assum…
The subject of robust estimation in time series is widely discussed in literature. One of the approaches is to use GM-estimation. This method incorporates a broad class of nonparametric estimators which under suitable conditions includes estimators robust to outliers in data. For the linear models the sensitivity of GM-estimators to outliers have been studied in the work by Martin and Yohai [5], and influence functionals for this estimator were derived. In this paper we follow this direction and examine the asymptotical properties of the class of M-estimators, which is narrower than the class …
A piecewise-deterministic Markov process is a stochastic process whose behavior is governed by an ordinary differential equation punctuated by random jumps occurring at random times. We focus on the nonparametric estimation problem of the jump rate for such a stochastic model observed within a long time interval under an ergodicity condition. We introduce an uncountable class (indexed by the deterministic flow) of recursive kernel estimates of the jump rate and we establish their strong pointwise consistency as well as their asymptotic normality. We propose to choose among this class the estim…
We derive estimators of the density of the event times of current status data. The estimators are derived for the situations where the distribution of the observation times is known and where this distribution is unknown. The density estimators are constructed from kernel estimators of the density of transformed current status data, which have a distribution similar to uniform deconvolution data. Expansions of the expectation and variance as well as asymptotic normality are derived. A reference density based bandwidth selection method is proposed. A simulated example is presented.
Ordinary differential equations (ODE's) are widespread models in physics, chemistry and biology. In particular, this mathematical formalism is used for describing the evolution of complex systems and it might consist of high-dimensional sets of coupled nonlinear differential equations. In this setting, we propose a general method for estimating the parameters indexing ODE's from times series. Our method is able to alleviate the computational difficulties encountered by the classical parametric methods. These difficulties are due to the implicit definition of the model. We propose the use of a …
We analyze the statistical properties of nonparametric regression estimators using covariates which are not directly observable, but have be estimated from data in a preliminary step. These so-called generated covariates appear in numerous applications, including two-stage nonparametric regression, estimation of simultaneous equation models or censored regression models. Yet so far there seems to be no general theory for their impact on the final estimator's statistical properties. Our paper provides such results. We derive a stochastic expansion that characterizes the influence of the generat…
This paper deals with the nonparametric estimation in heteroscedastic regression $ Y_i=f(X_i)+ξ_i, \: i=1,...,n $, with incomplete information, i.e. each real random variable $ ξ_i $ has a density $ g_{i} $ which is unknown to the statistician. The aim is to estimate the regression function $ f $ at a given point. Using a local polynomial fitting from M-estimator denoted $ \hat f^h $ and applying Lepski's procedure for the bandwidth selection, we construct an estimator $ \hat f^{\hat h} $ which is adaptive over the collection of isotropic Hölder classes. In particular, we establish new exponen…
We consider problem of signal detection in Gaussian white noise. Test statistics are linear combinations of squares of estimators of Fourier coefficients or $\mathbb{L}_2$-norms of kernel estimators. We point out necessary and sufficient conditions when nonparametric sets of alternatives have a given rate of exponential decay for type II error probabilities.
We consider a nonparametric regression model $Y=r(X)+\varepsilon$ with a random covariate $X$ that is independent of the error $\varepsilon$. Then the density of the response $Y$ is a convolution of the densities of $\varepsilon$ and $r(X)$. It can therefore be estimated by a convolution of kernel estimators for these two densities, or more generally by a local von Mises statistic. If the regression function has a nowhere vanishing derivative, then the convolution estimator converges at a parametric rate. We show that the convergence holds uniformly, and that the corresponding process obeys a …
This paper describes an estimator of the additive components of a nonparametric additive model with a known link function. When the additive components are twice continuously differentiable, the estimator is asymptotically normally distributed with a rate of convergence in probability of n^{-2/5}. This is true regardless of the (finite) dimension of the explanatory variable. Thus, in contrast to the existing asymptotically normal estimator, the new estimator has no curse of dimensionality. Moreover, the estimator has an oracle property. The asymptotic distribution of each additive component is…
Nonparametric density estimators are studied for $d$-dimensional, strongly spatial mixing data which is defined on a general $N$-dimensional lattice structure. We consider linear and nonlinear hard thresholded wavelet estimators which are derived from a $d$-dimensional multiresolution analysis. We give sufficient criteria for the consistency of these estimators and derive rates of convergence in $L^{p'}$ for $p'\in [1,\infty)$. For this reason, we study density functions which are elements of a $d$-dimensional Besov space $B^s_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We also verify the analytic correctness of ou…
We introduce and study a local linear nonparametric regression estimator for censorship model. The main goal of this paper is, to establish the uniform almost sure consistency result with rate over a compact set for the new estimate. To support our theoretical result, a simulation study has been done to make comparison with the classical regression estimator.
The celebrated Nadaraya-Watson kernel estimator is among the most studied method for nonparametric regression. A classical result is that its rate of convergence depends on the number of covariates and deteriorates quickly as the dimension grows, which underscores the "curse of dimensionality" and has limited its use in high dimensional settings. In this article, we show that when the true regression function is single or multi-index, the effects of the curse of dimensionality may be mitigated for the Nadaraya-Watson kernel estimator. Specifically, we prove that with $K$-fold cross-validation,…
We study the uniform convergence rate of the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) for the sub-distribution functions in the current status data with competing risks model. It is known that the MLE have $L^2$-norm convergence rate $O_P(n^{-1/3})$ in the absolutely continuous case, but there is no arguments for the same rate of uniform convergence. We specify conditions for the uniform convergence rate $O_P(n^{-1/3}\log^{1/3} n)$ of the MLE for the sub-distribution functions of competing risks on finite intervals. The obtained result refines known uniform convergence rate in the part…
In this paper, we study first the problem of nonparametric estimation of the stationary density $f$ of a discrete-time Markov chain $(X_i)$. We consider a collection of projection estimators on finite dimensional linear spaces. We select an estimator among the collection by minimizing a penalized contrast. The same technique enables to estimate the density $g$ of $(X_i, X_{i+1})$ and so to provide an adaptive estimator of the transition density $π=g/f$. We give bounds in $L^2$ norm for these estimators and we show that they are adaptive in the minimax sense over a large class of Besov spaces. …
In this paper, we propose a new semiparametric regression estimator by using a hybrid technique of a parametric approach and a nonparametric penalized spline method. The overall shape of the true regression function is captured by the parametric part, while its residual is consistently estimated by the nonparametric part. Asymptotic theory for the proposed semiparametric estimator is developed, showing that its behavior is dependent on the asymptotics for the nonparametric penalized spline estimator as well as on the discrepancy between the true regression function and the parametric part. As …
In this paper, we consider the situation in which the observations follow an isotonic generalized partly linear model. Under this model, the mean of the responses is modelled, through a link function, linearly on some covariates and nonparametrically on an univariate regressor in such a way that the nonparametric component is assumed to be a monotone function. A class of robust estimates for the monotone nonparametric component and for the regression parameter, related to the linear one, is defined. The robust estimators are based on a spline approach combined with a score function which bound…
This paper deals with the nonparametric density estimation of the regression error term assuming its independence with the covariate. The difference between the feasible estimator which uses the estimated residuals and the unfeasible one using the true residuals is studied. An optimal choice of the bandwidth used to estimate the residuals is given. We also study the asymptotic normality of the feasible kernel estimator and its rate-optimality.
For nonparametric regression with one-sided errors and a boundary curve model for Poisson point processes we consider the problem of efficient estimation for linear functionals. The minimax optimal rate is obtained by an unbiased estimation method which nevertheless depends on a Hölder condition or monotonicity assumption for the underlying regression or boundary function. We first construct a simple blockwise estimator and then build up a nonparametric maximum-likelihood approach for exponential noise variables and the point process model. In that approach also non-asymptotic efficiency is ob…
We point out necessary and sufficient conditions of uniform consistency of nonparametric sets of alternatives for widespread nonparametric tests. Nonparametric sets of alternatives can be defined both in terms of distribution function and in terms of density (or signals in the problem of signal detection in Gaussian white noise). In this part of paper such conditions are provided for $χ^2-$tests with increasing number of cells, Cramer-von Mises tests, tests generated $\mathbb{L}_2$- norms of kernel estimators and tests generated quadratic forms of estimators of Fourier coefficients.
We consider statistical models where functional data are artificially contaminated by independent Wiener processes in order to satisfy privacy constraints. We show that the corrupted observations have a Wiener density which determines the distribution of the original functional random variables, masked near the origin, uniquely, and we construct a nonparametric estimator of that density. We derive an upper bound for its mean integrated squared error which has a polynomial convergence rate, and we establish an asymptotic lower bound on the minimax convergence rates which is close to the rate at…
Given a discrete time sample $X_1,... X_n$ from a Lévy process $X=(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ of a finite jump activity, we study the problem of nonparametric estimation of the characteristic triplet $(γ,σ^2,ρ)$ corresponding to the process $X.$ Based on Fourier inversion and kernel smoothing, we propose estimators of $γ,σ^2$ and $ρ$ and study their asymptotic behaviour. The obtained results include derivation of upper bounds on the mean square error of the estimators of $γ$ and $σ^2$ and an upper bound on the mean integrated square error of an estimator of $ρ.$
In the framework of an abstract statistical model we discuss how to use the solution of one estimation problem ({\it Problem A}) in order to construct an estimator in another, completely different, {\it Problem B}. As a solution of {\it Problem A} we understand a data-driven selection from a given family of estimators $\mathbf{A}(\mH)=\big\{\widehat{A}_\mh, \mh\in\mH\big\}$ and establishing for the selected estimator so-called oracle inequality. %parameterized by some se t$\mH$. If $\hat{\mh}\in\mH$ is the selected parameter and $\mathbf{B}(\mH)=\big\{\widehat{B}_\mh, \mh\in\mH\big\}$ is an es…
Consider the nonparametric regression model Y=m(X)+E, where the function m is smooth but unknown, and E is independent of X. An estimator of the density of the error term E is proposed and its weak consistency is obtained. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we evaluate the impact of the estimation of the regression function on the error density estimator. Secondly, the optimal choices of the first and second step bandwidths used for estimating the regression function and the error density are proposed. Further, we investigate the asymptotic normality of the error density estimat…
The paper considers probability distribution, density, conditional distribution and density and conditional moments as well as their kernel estimators in spaces of generalized functions. This approach does not require restrictions on classes of distributions common in nonparametric estimation. Density in usual function spaces is not well-posed; this paper establishes existence and well-posedness of the generalized density function. It also demonstrates root-n convergence of the kernel density estimator in the space of generalized functions. It is shown that the usual kernel estimator of the co…
In this study, we develop an asymptotic theory of nonparametric regression for locally stationary random fields (LSRFs) $\{{\bf X}_{{\bf s}, A_{n}}: {\bf s} \in R_{n} \}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{p}$ observed at irregularly spaced locations in $R_{n} =[0,A_{n}]^{d} \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$. We first derive the uniform convergence rate of general kernel estimators, followed by the asymptotic normality of an estimator for the mean function of the model. Moreover, we consider additive models to avoid the curse of dimensionality arising from the dependence of the convergence rate of estimators on the number…
