Let $V$ be a two sided random walk and let $X$ denote a real valued diffusion process with generator ${1/2}e^{V([x])}\frac{d}{dx}(e^{-V([x])}\frac{d}{dx})$. This process is known to be the continuous equivalent of the one dimensional random walk in random environment with potential $V$. Hu and Shi (1997) described the Lévy classes of $X$ in the case where $V$ behaves approximately like a Brownian motion. In this paper, based on some fine results on the fluctuations of random walks and stable processes, we obtain an accurate image of the almost sure limiting behavior of $X$ when $V$ behaves asymptotically like a stable process. These results also apply for the corresponding random walk in random environment.
In this work, we prove that any asymptotically stable Markov-Feller operator possesses the e-property everywhere outside at most a meagre set. We also provide an example showing that this result is tight. Moreover, an equivalent criterion for the e-property is proposed.
Let $\{S_n, n\geq1\}$ be a random walk wih independent and identically distributed increments and let $\{g_n,n\geq1\}$ be a sequence of real numbers. Let $T_g$ denote the first time when $S_n$ leaves $(g_n,\infty)$. Assume that the random walk is oscillating and asymptotically stable, that is, there exists a sequence $\{c_n,n\geq1\}$ such that $S_n/c_n$ converges to a stable law. In this paper we determine the tail behaviour of $T_g$ for all oscillating asymptotically stable walks and all boundary sequences satisfying $g_n=o(c_n)$. Furthermore, we prove that the rescaled random walk conditione…
Suppose that $\{S_n,\ n\geq0\}$ is an asymptotically stable random walk. Let $g$ be a positive function and $T_g$ be the first time when $S_n$ leaves $[-g(n),\infty)$. In this paper we study asymptotic behaviour of $T_g$. We provide integral tests for function $g$ that guarantee $P(T_g>n)\sim V(g)P(T_0>n)$ where $T_0$ is the first strict descending ladder epoch of $\{S_n\}$
We study the asymptotic tail behaviour of the first-passage time over a moving boundary for asymptotically $α$-stable Lévy processes with $α<1$. Our main result states that if the left tail of the Lévy measure is regularly varying with index $- α$ and the moving boundary is equal to $1 - t^γ$ for some $γ<1/α$, then the probability that the process stays below the moving boundary has the same asymptotic polynomial order as in the case of a constant boundary. The same is true for the increasing boundary $1 + t^γ$ with $γ<1/α$ under the assumption of a regularly varying right tail with index $- α…
We consider an asymptotically stable multidimensional random walk $S(n)=(S_1(n),\ldots, S_d(n) )$. Let $τ_x:=\min\{n>0: x_{1}+S_1(n)\le 0\}$ be the first time the random walk $S(n)$ leaves the upper half-space. We obtain the asymptotics of $p_n(x,y):= P(x+S(n) \in y+Δ, τ_x>n)$ as $n$ tends to infinity, where $Δ$ is a fixed cube. From that we obtain the local asymptotics for the Green function $G(x,y):=\sum_n p_n(x,y)$, as $|y|$ and/or $|x|$ tend to infinity.
For families of random walks $\{S_k^{(a)}\}$ with $\mathbf E S_k^{(a)} = -ka < 0$ we consider their maxima $M^{(a)} = \sup_{k \ge 0} S_k^{(a)}$. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of $M^{(a)}$ as $a \to 0$ for asymptotically stable random walks. This problem appeared first in the 1960's in the analysis of a single-server queue when the traffic load tends to 1 and since then is referred to as the heavy-traffic approximation problem. Kingman and Prokhorov suggested two different approaches which were later followed by many authors. We give two elementary proofs of our main result, using eac…
Move-to-front rule is a heuristic updating a list of n items according to requests. Items are required with unknown probabilities (or popularities). The induced Markov chain is known to be ergodic. One main problem is the study of the distribution of the search cost dened as the position of the required item. Here we first establish the link between two recent papers that both extend results proved by Kingman on the expected stationary search cost. Combining results contained in these papers, we obtain the limiting behavior for any moments of the stationary seach cost as n tends to innity.
For a random walk on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}$ that is attracted to a strictly stable process with index $α\in (1, 2)$ we obtain the asymptotic form of the transition probability for the walk killed when it hits a finite set. The asymptotic forms obtained are valid uniformly in a natural range of the space and time variables. The situation is relatively simple when the limit stable process has jumps in both positive and negative directions; in the other case when the jumps are one sided rather interesting matters are involved and detailed analyses are necessitated.
In this paper, we first introduce the explicit analytical formulas for the expected values of the Gutman and Schultz indices for a random cyclooctane chain COCn. Meanwhile, the explicit formulas of the variances of the Gutman and Schultz indices for a random cyclooctane chain are determined and we prove these two indices are asymptotically subject to normal distribution. Furthermore, we are surprised to find the variances of Kf*(COCn) and Kf+(COCn) for a random cyclooctane chain based on the known results of others' paper and they are asymptotically subject to normal distribution.
We study the shape of the normalized stable Lévy tree $\mathcal{T}$ near its root. We show that, when zooming in at the root at the proper speed with a scaling depending on the index of stability, we get the unnormalized Kesten tree. In particular the limit is described by a tree-valued Poisson point process which does not depend on the initial normalization. We apply this to study the asymptotic behavior of additive functionals of the form \[\mathbf{Z}_{α,β}=\int_{\mathcal{T}} μ(\mathrm{d} x) \int_0^{H(x)} σ_{r,x}^α\mathfrak{h}_{r,x}^β\,\mathrm{d} r\]as $\max(α,β) \to \infty$, where $μ$ is th…
We consider the first-hitting time of a tempered $β$-stable subordinator, also called inverse tempered stable (ITS) subordinator. The density function of the ITS subordinator is obtained, for the index of stability $β\in (0,1)$. The series representation of the ITS density is also obtained, which could be helpful for computational purposes. The asymptotic behaviors of the $q$-th order moments of the ITS subordinator are investigated. In particular, the limiting behaviors of the mean of the ITS subordinator is given. The limiting form of the ITS density, as the space variable $x\rightarrow 0$, …
The stable fragmentation with index of self-similarity $α\in [-1/2,0)$ is derived by looking at the masses of the subtrees formed by discarding the parts of a $(1 + α)^{-1}$--stable continuum random tree below height $t$, for $t \geq 0$. We give a detailed limiting description of the distribution of such a fragmentation, $(F(t), t \geq 0)$, as it approaches its time of extinction, $ζ$. In particular, we show that $t^{1/α}F((ζ- t)^+)$ converges in distribution as $t \to 0$ to a non-trivial limit. In order to prove this, we go further and describe the limiting behavior of (a) an excursion of the…
We study the number of random records in an arbitrary split tree (or equivalently, the number of random cuttings required to eliminate the tree). We show that a classical limit theorem for convergence of sums of triangular arrays to infinitely divisible distributions can be used to determine the distribution of this number. After normalization the distributions are shown to be asymptotically weakly 1-stable. This work is a generalization of our earlier results for the random binary search tree, which is one specific case of split trees. Other important examples of split trees include $m$-ary s…
We consider random permutation matrices following a one-parameter family of deformations of the uniform distribution, called Ewens' measures, and modifications of these matrices where the entries equal to one are replaced by i.i.d uniform random variables on the unit circle. For each of these two ensembles of matrices, rescaling properly the eigenangles provides a limiting point process as the size of the matrices goes to infinity. If $J$ is an interval of $\mathbb{R}$, we show that, as the length of $J$ tends to infinity, the number of points lying in $J$ of the limiting point process related…
We determine the limiting distribution and the explicit tail behavior for the maximal displacement of a branching symmetric stable process with spatially inhomogeneous branching structure. Here the branching rate is a Kato class measure with compact support and can be singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
In this paper we consider the global stability of solutions of a nonlinear stochastic differential equation. The differential equation is a perturbed version of a globally stable linear autonomous equation with unique zero equilibrium where the diffusion coefficient is independent of the state. Contingent on a dissipative condition characterising the asymptotic stability of the unperturbed equation, necessary and sufficient conditions on the rate of decay of the noise intensity for the solution of the equation to be a.s. globally asymptotically stable, contingent on some weak and noise indepen…
The asymptotically autonomous robustness of random attractors of stochastic fluid equations defined on \emph{bounded} domains has been considered in the literature. In this article, we initially consider this topic (almost surely and in probability) for a non-autonomous stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation driven by additive and multiplicative noise defined on some \emph{unbounded Poincaré domains}. There are two significant keys to study this topic: what is the asymptotically autonomous limiting set of the time-section of random attractors as time goes to negative infinity, and how to show th…
In this paper we consider the global stability of solutions of an affine stochastic differential equation. The differential equation is a perturbed version of a globally stable linear autonomous equation with unique zero equilibrium where the diffusion coefficient is independent of the state. We find necessary and sufficient conditions on the rate of decay of the noise intensity for the solution of the equation to be globally asymptotically stable, stable but not asymptotically stable, and unstable, each with probability one. In the case of stable or bounded solutions, or when solutions are a.…
We study the problem of estimating parameters of the limiting equation of a multiscale diffusion in the case of averaging and homogenization, given data from the corresponding multiscale system. First, we review some recent results that make use of the maximum likelihood of the limiting equation. In particular, it has been shown that in the averaging case, the MLE will be asymptotically consistent in the limit while in the homogenization case, the MLE will be asymptotically consistent only if we subsample the data. Then, we focus on the problem of estimating the diffusion coefficient. We sugge…
We study the asymptotics of large simple graphs constrained by the limiting density of edges and the limiting subgraph density of an arbitrary fixed graph $H$. We prove that, for all but finitely many values of the edge density, if the density of $H$ is constrained to be slightly higher than that for the corresponding Erdős-Rényi graph, the typical large graph is bipodal with parameters varying analytically with the densities. Asymptotically, the parameters depend only on the degree sequence of $H$.
