(Revised version, January 2006. S. Gouezel pointed out that, when 1<r<2, the proof in the previous version was incomplete. In fixing this gap, we simplified the argument in Section 6. In addition, there is a new appendix, with an alternative description of the norms. We also corrected a few minor flaws.)
We study spectral properties of transfer operators for diffeomorphisms T on a Riemannian manifold: Suppose that there is an isolated hyperbolic subset for T, with a compact isolating neighborhood V. We first introduce Banach spaces of distributions supported on V, which are anisotropic versions of the usual space of C^p functions C^p(V) and of the generalized Sobolev spaces W^{p,t}(V), respectively. Then we show that the transfer operators associated to T and a smooth weight extend boundedly to these spaces, and we give bounds on the essential spectral radii of such extensions in terms of hyperbolicity exponents. These bounds shed some light on those obtained by Kitaev for the radius of convergence of dynamical determinants.
We show by means of a counterexample that a $C^{1+Lip}$ diffeomorphism Holder conjugate to an Anosov diffeomorphism is not necessarily Anosov. The counterexample can bear higher smoothness up to $C^3$. Also we include a result from the 2006 Ph.D. thesis of T. Fisher: a $C^{1+Lip}$ diffeomorphism Holder conjugate to an Anosov diffeomorphism is Anosov itself provided that Holder exponents of the conjugacy and its inverse are sufficiently large.
We prove that a $C^2$ diffeomorphism $f$ of a compact manifold $M$ satisfies Axiom A and the strong transversality condition if and only if it is Hölder stable, that is, any $C^1$ diffeomorphism $g$ of $M$ sufficiently $C^1$ close to $f$ is conjugate to $f$ by a homeomorphism which is Hölder on the whole manifold.
We prove that if d is an integer number bigger than 1 and f_1,...,f_d are commuting circle diffeomorphisms respectively of class C^(1+τ_k), where τ_1 + ... + τ_k > 1, then these maps are simultaneously conjugate to rotations provided that their rotation numbers are independent over the rationals.
For any $θ, ω> 1/2$ we prove that, if any $d$-pseudotrajectory of length $\sim 1/d^ω$ of a diffeomorphism $f\in C^2$ can be $d^θ$-shadowed by an exact trajectory, then $f$ is structurally stable. Previously it was conjectured by Hammel-Grebogi-Yorke that for $θ= ω= 1/2$ this property holds for a wide class of non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. In the proof we introduce the notion of sublinear growth property for inhomogenious linear equations and prove that it implies exponential dichotomy.
We construct an explicit example of family of non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, at the boundary of the set of uniformly hyperbolic systems, with one orbit of cubic heteroclinic tangency. One of the leaves involved in this heteroclinic tangency is periodic, and there is a certain degree of freedom for the choice of the second one. For a non-countable set of choices, this leaf is not periodic and the diffeomorphism is Kupka-Smale: every periodic point is hyperbolic and the intersections of stable and unstable leaves of periodic points are transverse. As a consequence of our construction,…
Suppose f is a $C^{1+α}$ surface diffeomorphism, and m is an equilibrium measure of a Holder continuous potential. We show that if m has positive metric entropy, then f is measure theoretically isomorphic to the product of a Bernoulli scheme and a finite rotation.
Let $A$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle over a hyperbolic dynamical system with values in the group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold $M$. We consider the periodic data of $A$, i.e., the set of its return values along the periodic orbits in the base. We show that if the periodic data of $A$ is bounded in Diff$^{\,q}(M)$, $q>1$, then the set of values of the cocycle is bounded in Diff$^{\,r}(M)$ for each $r<q$. Moreover, such a cocycle is isometric with respect to a Hölder continuous family of Riemannian metrics on $M$.
We consider symplectic cocycles over two classes of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms: having compact center leaves and time one maps of Anosov flows. We prove that the Lyapunov exponents are non-zero in an open and dense set in the Hölder topology.
We prove a rigidity theorem for dominated Hölder cocycles with values on diffeomorphism groups of a compact manifold over hyperbolic homeomorphisms. More precisely, we show that if two such cocycles have equal periodic data, then they are cohomologous.
We study perturbations of a partially hyperbolic toral automorphism L which is diagonalizable over C and has a dense center foliation. For a small perturbation of L with a smooth center foliation we establish existence of a smooth leaf conjugacy to L. We also show that if a small perturbation of an ergodic irreducible L has smooth center foliation and is bi-Holder conjugate to L, then the conjugacy is smooth. As a corollary, we show that for any symplectic perturbation of such an L any bi-Holder conjugacy must be smooth. For a totally irreducible L with two-dimensional center, we establish a n…
Classical results by Poincaré and Denjoy show that two orientation-preserving $C^2$ diffeomorphisms of the circle are topologically conjugate if and only if they have the same rotation number. We show that there is no possibility of getting such a complete numerical Borel invariant for the conjugacy relation of orientation-preserving circle diffeomorphisms by homeomorphisms with higher degree of regularity. For instance, we consider conjugacy by Hölder homeomorphisms or by $C^k$-diffeomorphisms with $k\in \mathbb{Z}^+ \cup \{\infty\}$. The proof combines techniques from Descriptive Set Theory …
We consider group-valued cocycles over a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism which is accessible volume-preserving and center bunched. We study cocycles with values in the group of invertible continuous linear operators on a Banach space. We describe properties of holonomies for fiber bunched cocycles and establish their Holder regularity. We also study cohomology of cocycles and its connection with holonomies. We obtain a result on regularity of a measurable conjugacy, as well as a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a contionuous conjugacy between two cocycles.
We consider extensions of Anosov diffeomorphisms of an infranilmanifold by the real vector space R^ω. Our main result, based on the analogous theorem in finite dimensions proven by Nitica and Pollicott, is that any Holder cocycle satisfying an obvious obstruction induces a topologically transitive extension (topologically weak mixing, in fact). We show how to construct cocycles satisfying these conditions for any Anosov diffeomorphism, and then observe that unlike the finite dimensional case, where cocycles satisfying the obstruction are C^0-stably transitive, there can be no infinite-dimensio…
In this paper we consider the space of smooth conjugacy classes of an Anosov diffeomorphism of the two-torus. The only 2-manifold that supports an Anosov diffeomorphism is the 2-torus, and Franks and Manning showed that every such diffeomorphism is topologically conjugate to a linear example, and furthermore, the eigenvalues at periodic points are a complete smooth invariant. The question arises: what sets of eigenvalues occur as the Anosov diffeomorphism ranges over a topological conjugacy class? This question can be reformulated: what pairs of cohomology classes (one determined by the expand…
We consider Holder continuous fiber bunched GL(d,R)-valued cocycles over an Anosov diffeomorphism. We show that two such cocycles are Holder continuously cohomologous if they have equal periodic data, and prove a result for cocycles with conjugate periodic data. We obtain a corollary for cohomology between any constant cocycle and its small perturbation. The fiber bunching condition means that non-conformality of the cocycle is dominated by the expansion and contraction in the base. We show that this condition can be established based on the periodic data. Some important examples of cocycles c…
We consider Holder continuous GL(2,R)-valued cocycles over a transitive Anosov diffeomorphism. We give a complete classification up to Holder cohomology of cocycles with one Lyapunov exponent and of cocycles that preserve two transverse Holder continuous sub-bundles. We prove that a measurable cohomology between two such cocycles is Holder continuous. We also show that conjugacy of periodic data for two such cocycles does not always imply cohomology, but a slightly stronger assumption does. We describe examples that indicate that our main results do not extend to general GL(2,R)-valued cocycle…
We consider a smooth Anosov diffeomorphism with a smooth dynamical foliation. We show upper bounds on the essential spectral radius of its transfer operator acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces. (Such bounds are related to the essential decorrelation rate for the SRB measure.) We compare our results to the estimates of Kitaev on the domain of holomorphy of dynamical Fredholm determinants for differentiable dynamics.
Planar hyperbolic diffeomorphisms can be referred to two cases: Poincaré domain (both eigenvalues lie inside the unit circle $S^1$) and Siegel domain (one eigenvalue inside $S^1$ but the other outside $S^1$). In Poincaré domain it was proved that $C^{1,α}$ smoothness with $α_0:=1-\log|λ_2|/\log|λ_1|<α\le 1$, where $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are both eigenvalues such that $0<|λ_1|<|λ_2|<1$, admits $C^1$ linearization and the linearization is actually $C^{1,β}$. While a sharp Hölder exponent $β>0$ is given, an interesting problem is: Is the exponent $α_0$ also sharp? On the other hand, in Siegel domain we …
