The well-known necessary and sufficient criteria for the Riemann hypothesis of M. Riesz and Hardy-Littlewood, based on the order of growth at infinity along the positive real axis of certain entire functions, are here imbedded in a general theorem for a class of entire functions, which in turn is seen to be a consequence of a rather transparent convolution criterion. Some properties of the convolutions involved sharpen what is hitherto known for the Riesz function.
The paper presents two arithmetical versions of the Nyman-Beurling equivalence with the Riemann hypothesis, proved by classical, quasi elementary, number-theoretic methods, based on an integrated version of the classical combinatorial identity for Moebius numbers. These proofs also give insight into the troublesome phenomenon that many natural sequences of Beurling functions tending to the indicator function of (0,1) both pointwise and in L1 norm do not converge in L2 norm.
We prove an inversion formula for summatory arithmetic functions. As an application, we obtain an arithmetic relationship between summatory Piltz divisor functions and a sum of the Möbius function over certain integers, denoted by $M(x,y)$. With this relationship, using bounds for the main and remainder terms in the $k$-divisor problems we deduce conditional and unconditional results concerning $M(x,y)$ and the zero-free region of the Riemann zeta-function and Dirichlet $L$-functions.
In this paper, we show that Riemann hypothesis (concerning zeros of the zeta function in the critical strip) is equivalent to the analytic continuation of Euler products obtained by restricting the Euler zeta product to suitable subsets $M_k$, $k\geq 1$ of the set of prime numbers. Each of these Euler product defines so a partial zeta function $ζ_{k}(s)$ equal to a Dirichlet series of the form $\sum ε(n)/n^s$, with coefficients $ε(n)$ equal to 0 or 1 as n belongs or not to the population of integers generated by $M_k$. We show that usual formulas of the arithmetic adapt themselves to such popu…
We prove nonlinear relation on multiple Hurwitz-Riemann zeta functions. Using analytic continuation of these multiple Hurwitz-Riemann zeta function, we quote at negative integers Euler's nonlinear relation for generalized Bernoulli polynomials and numbers.
Several arguments against the truth of the Riemann hypothesis are extensively discussed. These include the Lehmer phenomenon, the Davenport-Heilbronn zeta-function, large and mean values of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ on the critical line, and zeros of a class of convolution functions. The first two topics are classical, and the remaining ones are connected with the author's research.
Riemann Hypothesis: a special case of the Riesz and Hardy-Littlewood wave and a numerical treatment of the Baez-Duarte coefficients up to some billions in the k-variable
We establish a connection between the ratios conjecture for the Riemann zeta-function and a conjecture concerning correlations of convolutions of Möbius and divisor functions. Specifically, we prove that the ratios conjecture and an arithmetic correlations conjecture imply the same result. This provides new support for the ratios conjecture, which previously had been motivated by analogy with formulae in random matrix theory and by a heuristic recipe. Our main theorem generalises a recent calculation pertaining to the special case of two-over-two ratios.
The aim of this paper is to define some new number-theoretic functions including necklaces polynomials and the numbers of special words such as Lyndon words. By using Dirichlet convolution formula with well-known number-theoretic functions, we derive some new identities and relations associated with Dirichlet series, Lambert series, and also the family of zeta functions including the Riemann zeta functions and polylogarithm functions. By using analytic (meromorphic) continuation of zeta functions, we also derive identities and formulas including Bernoulli numbers and Apostol-Bernoulli numbers.…
We combine our version of the resonance method with certain convolution formulas for $ζ(s)$ and $\log\, ζ(s)$. This leads to a new $Ω$ result for $|ζ(1/2+it)|$: The maximum of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ on the interval $1 \le t \le T$ is at least $\exp\left((1+o(1)) \sqrt{\log T \log\log\log T/\log\log T}\right)$. We also obtain conditional results for $S(t):=1/π$ times the argument of $ζ(1/2+it)$ and $S_1(t):=\int_0^t S(τ)dτ$. On the Riemann hypothesis, the maximum of $|S(t)|$ is at least $c \sqrt{\log T \log\log\log T/\log\log T}$ and the maximum of $S_1(t)$ is at least $c_1 \sqrt{\log T \log\log\log T/(…
Gonek, Graham, and Lee have shown recently that the Riemann Hypothesis (RH) can be reformulated in terms of certain asymptotic estimates for twisted sums with von Mangoldt function $Λ$. Building on their ideas, for each $k\in\mathbb{N}$, we study twisted sums with the \emph{generalized von Mangoldt function} $$ Λ_k(n):=\sum_{d\,\mid\,n}μ(d)\Big(\log\frac{n}{d}\,\Big)^k $$ and establish similar connections with RH. For example, for $k=2$ we show that RH is equivalent to the assertion that, for any fixed $ε>0$, the estimate $$ \sum_{n\leq x}Λ_2(n)n^{-iy} =\frac{2x^{1-iy}(\log x-C_0)}{(1-iy)} -\f…
In this series we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper begins the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to $T^3$ with divisor functions as coefficients.
In this series of papers we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper completes the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of arbitrary length with divisor functions as coefficients.
This is a semi-expository paper on the easier aspects of the Explicit Formula for the Riemann Zeta Function. The topics reviewed here include: Weil's criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis and its probabilistic interpretation, various formulations of the contribution corresponding to the real place, Haran's version of the Explicit Formula, and the author's own derivation which puts all places on the same footing. This derivation, an addendum to Tate's Thesis, is in the spirit of Weil's insights towards an adelic understanding of the Explicit Formula. Whereas the analyst would likely formulate th…
Additive divisor sums play a prominent role in the theory of the moments of the Riemann zeta function. There is a long history of determining sharp asymptotic formula for the shifted convolution sum of the ordinary divisor function. In recent years, it has emerged that a sharp asymptotic formula for the shifted convolution sum of the triple divisor function would be useful in evaluating the sixth moment of the Riemann zeta function. In this article, we study $D_{k,\ell}(x) = \sum_{n \le x} τ_k(n) τ_{\ell}(n+h)$ where $τ_k$ and $τ_{\ell}$ are the $k$-th and $\ell$-th divisor functions. The main…
Given a periodic function $f$, we study the convergence almost everywhere and in norm of the series $\sum_{k} c_k f(kx)$. Let $f(x)= \sum_{m=1}^\infty a_m \sin {2πm x}$ where $\sum_{m=1}^\infty a_{m }^2d(m) <\infty$ and $d(m)=\sum_{d|m} 1$, and let $f_n(x) = f(nx)$. We show by using a new decomposition of squared sums that for any $K\subset \N$ finite, $ \|\sum_{k\in K} c_k f_k \|_2^2 \le ( \sum_{m=1}^\infty a_{m }^2 d(m) ) \sum_{k\in K } c_{k}^2d(k^2)$. If $f^s (x)= \sum_{j=1}^\infty \frac{\sin 2πjx}{j^s}$, $s>1/2$, by only using elementary Dirichlet convolution calculus, we show that for $0<…
This paper studies a zeta function of two complex variables (w, s) attached to an algebraic number field K, introduced by van der Geer and Schoof, which is based on an analogue of the Riemann-Roch theorem for number fields using Arakelov divisors. We mainly consider the case of the rational field Q, where for w = 1 one recovers the Riemann zeta function with the factors at infinity added. The analogue of the Riemann xi-function analytically continues to an entire function of two complex variables, and satisfies a functional equation holding w fixed and sending s to w-s. For real w the "critica…
