We show that matchings avoiding certain partial patterns are counted by the 3-Catalan numbers. We give a characterization of 12312-avoiding matchings in terms of restrictions on the corresponding oscillating tableaux. We also find a bijection between Schröder paths without peaks at level one and matchings avoiding both patterns 12312 and 121323. Such objects are counted by the super-Catalan numbers or the little Schröder numbers. A refinement of the super-Catalan numbers is obtained by fixing the number of crossings in the matchings. In the sense of Wilf-equivalence, we find that the patterns 12132, 12123, 12321, 12231, 12213 are equivalent to 12312.
We obtain the generating functions for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and left nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding three neighbor patterns (neighbor alignments, left nestings and right nestings) and set partitions avoiding right nestings via an intermediate structure of integer compositions. Such integer compositions are known to be in one-to-one correspondence with self-modified ascent sequences or $3\bar{1}52\bar{4}$-avoiding permutations, as shown by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Du…
How many matchings on the vertex set V={1,2,...,2n} avoid a given configuration of three edges? Chen, Deng and Du have shown that the number of matchings that avoid three nesting edges is equal to the number of matchings avoiding three pairwise crossing edges. In this paper, we consider other forbidden configurations of size three. We present a bijection between matchings avoiding three crossing edges and matchings avoiding an edge nested below two crossing edges. This bijection uses non-crossing pairs of Dyck paths of length 2n as an intermediate step. Apart from that, we give a bijection tha…
We give a simple proof that every $n$-vertex graph $d$-regular graph that does not contain a fixed bipartite graph as a subgraph has an induced matching of size $Ω((n/d)(\log d))$.
Recently, Chen et al. derived the generating function for partitions avoiding right nestings and posed the problem of finding the generating function for partitions avoiding right crossings. In this paper, we derive the generating function for partitions avoiding right crossings via an intermediate structure of partial matchings avoiding 2-right crossings and right nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding 2-right crossing and right nestings and partitions avoiding right crossings.

The lattice polynomials $L_{i,j}(x)$ are introduced by Hough and Shapiro as a weighted count of certain lattice paths from the origin to the point $(i,j)$. In particular, $L_{2n, n}(x)$ reduces to the generating function of the numbers $T_{n,k}={1\over n}{n-1+k\choose n-1}{2n-k\choose n+1}$, which can be viewed as a refinement of the $3$-Catalan numbers $T_n=\frac{1}{2n+1}{3n\choose n}$. In this paper, we establish a correspondence between $12312$-avoiding partial matchings and lattice paths, and we show that the weighted count of such partial matchings with respect to the number of crossings …
Extending the notion of pattern avoidance in permutations, we study matchings and set partitions whose arc diagram representation avoids a given configuration of three arcs. These configurations, which generalize 3-crossings and 3-nestings, have an interpretation, in the case of matchings, in terms of patterns in full rook placements on Ferrers boards. We enumerate 312-avoiding matchings and partitions, obtaining algebraic generating functions, in contrast with the known D-finite generating functions for the 321-avoiding (i.e., 3-noncrossing) case. Our approach also provides a more direct proo…
A matching of the set $[2n]=\{ 1,2,\ldots ,2n\}$ is a partition of $[2n]$ into blocks with two elements, i.e. a graph on $[2n]$ such that every vertex has degree one. Given two matchings $σ$ and $τ$ , we say that $σ$ is a pattern of $τ$ when $σ$ can be obtained from $τ$ by deleting some of its edges and consistently relabelling the remaining vertices. This is a partial order relation turning the set of all matchings into a poset, which will be called the matching pattern poset. In this paper, we continue the study of classes of pattern avoiding matchings, initiated by Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley a…
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In this paper, we give a number of general, and specific enumerative results for POPs in permutations defined by bipartite graphs, substantially extending the list of known results in this direction. In particular, we completely characterize the Wilf-equivalence for patterns defined by the N-shape posets.
Sergey Kitaev has shown that the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the generalized pattern $σ$-$k$, where $σ$ is a pattern without dashes and $k$ is one greater than the biggest element in $σ$, is determined by the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding $σ$. We show that this also holds for permutations avoiding all the generalized patterns $σ_1$-$k_1$, $...$, $σ_n$-$k_n$, where $σ_1$, $...$, $σ_n$ are patterns without dashes and $k_i$ is one greater than the biggest element in $σ_i$. Similarly the exponential generating function for permutations avoi…
Given permutations $σ\in S_k$ and $π\in S_n$ with $k<n$, the \emph{pattern matching} problem is to decide whether $π$ matches $σ$ as an order-isomorphic subsequence. We give a linear-time algorithm in case both $π$ and $σ$ avoid the two size-$3$ permutations $213$ and $231$. For the special case where only $σ$ avoids $213$ and $231$, we present a $O(max(kn^2,n^2\log(\log(n)))$ time algorithm. We extend our research to bivincular patterns that avoid $213$ and $231$ and present a $O(kn^4)$ time algorithm. Finally we look at the related problem of the longest subsequence which avoids $213$ and $2…
Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) of the first kind are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets. They are lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down-steps cannot be consecutive. We enumerate MAP and their prefixes avoiding peaks (resp. valleys, resp. double rise) according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. We express our results using Riordan arrays. Finally, we provide constructive bijections between these paths and restricted Dyck and Motzk…
We consider the problem of extending and avoiding partial edge colorings of hypercubes; that is, given a partial edge coloring $φ$ of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$, we are interested in whether there is a proper $d$-edge coloring of $Q_d$ that agrees with the coloring $φ$ on every edge that is colored under $φ$; or, similarly, if there is a proper $d$-edge coloring that disagrees with $φ$ on every edge that is colored under $φ$. In particular, we prove that for any $d\geq 1$, if $φ$ is a partial $d$-edge coloring of $Q_d$, then $φ$ is avoidable if every color appears on at most $d/8$ edg…
A permutation $π$ contains a pattern $σ$ if and only if there is a subsequence in $π$ with its letters are in the same relative order as those in $σ$. Partially ordered patterns (POPs) provide a convenient way to denote patterns in which the relative order of some of the letters does not matter. This paper elucidates connections between the avoidance sets of a few POPs with other combinatorial objects, directly answering five open questions posed by Gao and Kitaev \cite{gao-kitaev-2019}. This was done by thoroughly analysing the avoidance sets and developing recursive algorithms to derive thes…
For a graph $G = (V(G), E(G))$, let $i(G)$ be the number of isolated vertices in $G$. The {\it isolated toughness} of $G$ is defined as $I(G) = min\{|S|/i(G-S) : S\subseteq V(G), i(G-S)\geq 2\}$ if $G$ is not complete; $I(G)=|V(G)|-1$ otherwise. In this paper, several sufficient conditions in terms of isolated toughness are obtained for the existence of $[a, b]$-factors avoiding given subgraphs, e.g., a set of vertices, a set of edges and a matching, respectively.
The number of even 321-avoiding permutations of length n is equal to the number of odd ones if n is even, and exceeds it by the (n-1)/2th Catalan number otherwise. We present an involution that proves a refinement of this sign-balance property respecting the length of the longest increasing subsequence of the permutation. In addition, this yields a combinatorial proof of a recent analogous result of Adin and Roichman dealing with the last descent. In particular, we answer the question how to obtain the sign of a 321-avoiding permutation from the pair of tableaux resulting from the Robinson-Sch…
Consider a cyclically ordered collection of $r$ equinumerous agent sets with strict preferences of every agent over the agents from the next agent set. A weakly stable cyclic matching is a partition of the set of agents into disjoint union of $r$-long cycles, one agent from each set per cycle, such that there are no destabilizing $r$-long cycles, i.e. cycles in which every agent strictly prefers its successor to its successor in the matching. Assuming that the preferences are uniformly random and independent, we show that the expected number of stable matchings grows with $n$ (cardinality of e…
We define a new natural partial order on Motzkin paths that serves as an intermediate step between two previously-studied partial orders. We provide a bijection between valid hook configurations of $312$-avoiding permutations and intervals in these new posets. We also show that valid hook configurations of permutations avoiding $132$ (or equivalently, $231$) are counted by the same numbers that count intervals in the Motzkin-Tamari posets that Fang recently introduced, and we give an asymptotic formula for these numbers. We then proceed to enumerate valid hook configurations of permutations av…
Special partial matchings (SPMs) are a generalisation of Brenti's special matchings. Let a \emph{pircon} be a poset in which every non-trivial principal order ideal is finite and admits an SPM. Thus pircons generalise Marietti's zircons. We prove that every open interval in a pircon is a PL ball or a PL sphere. It is then demonstrated that Bruhat orders on certain twisted identities and quasiparabolic $W$-sets constitute pircons. Together, these results extend a result of Can, Cherniavsky, and Twelbeck, prove a conjecture of Hultman, and confirm a claim of Rains and Vazirani.
Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial resu…
We show that two classes of combinatorial objects--inversion tables with no subsequence of decreasing consecutive numbers and matchings with no 2-nestings--are enumerated by the Fishburn numbers. In particular, we give a simple bijection between matchings with no 2-nestings and inversion tables with no subsequence of decreasing consecutive numbers. We then prove using the involution principle that inversion tables with no subsequence of decreasing consecutive numbers have the same generating function as the Fishburn numbers. The Fishburn numbers have previously been shown by Bousquet-Mélou, Cl…
Let $G$ be a graph and $r\in\mathbb{N}$. The matching Kneser graph $\textsf{KG}(G, rK_2)$ is a graph whose vertex set is the set of $r$-matchings in $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if their corresponding matchings are edge-disjoint. In [Alishahi, M. and Hajiabolhassan, H., On the Chromatic Number of Matching Kneser Graphs, Combin. Probab. and Comput. 29 (2020), no. 1, 1--21.] it was conjectured that for any connected graph $G$ and positive integer $r\geq 2$, the chromatic number of $\textsf{KG}(G, rK_2)$ is equal to $|E(G)|-\textsf{ex}(G,rK_2)$, where $\textsf{ex}(G,rK_2)$ denotes the larges…
In this paper we consider properly edge-colored graphs, i.e. two edges with the same color cannot share an endpoint, so each color class is a matching. A matching is called \it rainbow \rm if its edges have different colors. The minimum degree of a graph is denoted by $δ(G)$. We show that properly edge colored graphs $G$ with $|V(G)|\ge 4δ(G)-3$ have rainbow matchings of size $δ(G)$, this gives the best known estimate to a recent question of Wang. Since one obviously needs at least $2δ(G)$ vertices to guarantee a rainbow matching of size $δ(G)$, we investigate what happens when $|V(G)|\ge 2δ(G…
Inspired by Yakoubov's 2015 investigation of pattern avoiding linear extensions of the posets called combs, we study pattern avoiding linear extensions of rectangular posets. These linear extensions are closely related to standard tableaux. For positive integers $s$ and $t$ we consider two natural rectangular partial orders on $\{1,2,\ldots,s t\}$, which we call the NE rectangular order and the EN rectangular order. First we enumerate linear extensions of both rectangular orders avoiding most sets of patterns of length three. Then we use both a generating tree and a bijection to show that the …
By a theorem of Drisko, any $2n-1$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph have a partial rainbow matching of size $n$. Inspired by discussion of Barát, Gyárfás and Sárközy, we conjecture that if $n$ is odd then the same is true also in general graphs, and that if $n$ is even then $2n$ matchings of size $n$ suffice. We prove that any $3n-2$ matchings of size $n$ have a partial rainbow matching of size $n$.
Valid hook configurations are combinatorial objects used to understand West's stack-sorting map. We extend existing bijections corresponding valid hook configurations to intervals in partial orders on Motzkin paths. To enumerate valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations, we build off of an existing bijection into a Motzkin poset and construct a bijection to certain well-studied closed lattice walks in the first quadrant. We use existing results about these lattice paths to show that valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations are not counted by a $D$-finite generati…
Every set of natural numbers determines a generating function convergent for $q \in (-1,1)$ whose behavior as $q \rightarrow 1^-$ determines a germ. These germs admit a natural partial ordering that can be used to compare sizes of sets of natural numbers in a manner that generalizes both cardinality of finite sets and density of infinite sets. For any finite set $D$ of positive integers, call a set $S$ "$D$-avoiding" if no two elements of $S$ differ by an element of $D$. It is shown that any $D$-avoiding set that is maximal in the class of $D$-avoiding sets (with respect to germ-ordering) is u…
We consider the enumeration of ordered set partitions avoiding a permutation pattern, as introduced by Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell. Let $\op_{n,k}(p)$ be the number of ordered set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ into $k$ blocks that avoid a permutation pattern $p$. We establish an explicit identity between the number $\op_{n,k}(p)$ and the numbers of words avoiding the inverse of $p$. This identity allows us to easily translate results on pattern-avoiding words obtained in earlier works into equivalent results on pattern-avoiding ordered set partitions. In particular, \emph{(a)} we dete…
Stein proposed the following conjecture: if the edge set of $K_{n,n}$ is partitioned into $n$ sets, each of size $n$, then there is a partial rainbow matching of size $n-1$. He proved that there is a partial rainbow matching of size $n(1-\frac{D_n}{n!})$, where $D_n$ is the number of derangements of $[n]$. This means that there is a partial rainbow matching of size about $(1- \frac{1}{e})n$. Using a topological version of Hall's theorem we improve this bound to $\frac{2}{3}n$.
This thesis deals with three different aspects of the combinatorics of permutations. In the first two papers, two flavours of pattern avoiding permutations are examined; and in the third paper Young tableaux, which are closely related to permutations via representation theory, are studied. In the first paper we give solutations to several interesting problems regarding pattern avoiding doubly alternating permutations, such as finding a bijection between 1234-avoiding permutations and 1234-avoiding doubly alternating permutations of twice the size. In the second paper partial permutations which…
We study the distribution of the statistics 'number of fixed points' and 'number of excedances' in permutations avoiding subsets of patterns of length 3. We solve all the cases of simultaneous avoidance of more than one pattern, giving generating functions enumerating these two statistics. Some cases are generalized to patterns of arbitrary length. For avoidance of one single pattern we give partial results. We also describe the distribution of these statistics in involutions avoiding any subset of patterns of length 3. The main technique is to use bijections between pattern-avoiding permutati…
We consider the RMS distance (sum of squared distances between pairs of points) under translation between two point sets in the plane, in two different setups. In the partial-matching setup, each point in the smaller set is matched to a distinct point in the bigger set. Although the problem is not known to be polynomial, we establish several structural properties of the underlying subdivision of the plane and derive improved bounds on its complexity. These results lead to the best known algorithm for finding a translation for which the partial-matching RMS distance between the point sets is mi…
Strongly conflict-avoiding codes (SCACs) are employed in a slot-asynchronous multiple-access collision channel without feedback to guarantee that each active user can send at least one packet successfully in the worst case within a fixed period of time. Assume all users are assigned distinct codewords, the number of codewords in an SCAC is equal to the number of potential users that can be supported. SCACs have different combinatorial structure compared with conflict-avoiding codes (CACs) due to additional collisions incurred by partially overlapped transmissions. In this paper, we establish u…
Permutation Pattern Matching (or PPM) is a decision problem whose input is a pair of permutations $π$ and $τ$, represented as sequences of integers, and the task is to determine whether $τ$ contains a subsequence order-isomorphic to $π$. Bose, Buss and Lubiw proved that PPM is NP-complete on general inputs. We show that PPM is NP-complete even when $π$ has no decreasing subsequence of length 3 and $τ$ has no decreasing subsequence of length 4. This provides the first known example of PPM being hard when one or both of $π$ and $σ$ are restricted to a proper hereditary class of permutations. Thi…
In the classical partial vertex cover problem, we are given a graph $G$ and two positive integers $R$ and $L$. The goal is to check whether there is a subset $V'$ of $V$ of size at most $R$, such that $V'$ covers at least $L$ edges of $G$. The problem is NP-hard as it includes the Vertex Cover problem. Previous research has addressed the extension of this problem where one has weight-functions defined on sets of vertices and edges of $G$. In this paper, we consider the following version of the problem where on the input we are given an edge-weighted bipartite graph $G$, and three positive inte…
