In this paper we study second order non-linear periodic systems driven by the ordinary vector $p$-Laplacian with a non-smooth, locally Lipschitz potential function. Our approach is variational and it is based on the non-smooth critical point theory. We prove existence and multiplicity results under general growth conditions on the potential function. Then we establish the existence of non-trivial homoclinic (to zero) solutions. Our theorem appears to be the first such result (even for smooth problems) for systems monitored by the $p$-Laplacian. In the last section of the paper we examine the scalar \hbox{non-linear} and semilinear problem. Our approach uses a generalized Landesman--Lazer type condition which generalizes previous ones used in the literature. Also for the semilinear case the problem is at resonance at any eigenvalue.
In this paper, we consider the smooth solutions of 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in periodic domains. We prove that, in the absence of external forces and with divergence-free smooth periodic initial data, periodic smooth solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations exist for all time.
We consider the periodic non-linear Schrödinger equation with non-linearity given by $|u|^{p-1}u$ for odd $p > 1$ in dimension $1$. We first establish that the difference between the non-linear evolution and a phase rotation of the the linear evolution is in a smoother space. We then study forced and damped defocusing non-linear Schrödinger equations of the above type and establish an analogous smoothing statement that extends globally in time. As a corollary we establish both existence and smootheness for global attractors in the energy space.
In this paper we study the periodic Navier--Stokes equation. From the periodic Navier--Stokes equation and the linear equation $\partial_t u = νΔu + \mathbb{P} [v\nabla u]$ we derive the corresponding equations for the time dependent Fourier coefficients $a_k(t)$. We prove the existence of a unique smooth solution $u$ of the linear equation by a Montel space version of Arzelà--Ascoli. We gain bounds on the $a_k$'s of $u$ depending on $v$. With $v = -u$ these bounds show that a unique smooth solution $u$ of the $n$-dimensional periodic Navier--Stokes equation exists for all $t\in [0,T^*)$ with …

We establish a smoothing result for the generalized KdV (gKdV) on the torus with polynomial non-linearity, damping, and forcing that matches the smoothing level for the gKdV at $H^1$. As a consequence, we establish the existence of a global attractor for this equation as well as its compactness in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\in (1,2).$
In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem of one-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations with the source term $βρ|u|^αu$. By means of wave decomposition and the uniform a-priori estimates, we prove the global existence of smooth solutions under small perturbations around the supersonic Fanno flow. Then, by Gronwall's inequality, we get the smooth solution is time-periodic.
We consider the periodic $\muDP$ equation (a modified version of the Degasperis-Procesi equation) as the geodesic flow of a right-invariant affine connection $\nabla$ on the Fréchet Lie group $\Diff^{\infty}(§^1)$ of all smooth and orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle $§^1=\R/\Z$. On the Lie algebra $\C^{\infty}(§^1)$ of $\Diff^{\infty}(§^1)$, this connection is canonically given by the sum of the Lie bracket and a bilinear operator. For smooth initial data, we show the short time existence of a smooth solution of $\muDP$ which depends smoothly on time and on the initial data. …
In this paper we study the quantitative homogenization of second-order parabolic systems with locally periodic (in both space and time) coefficients. The $O(\varepsilon)$ scale-invariant error estimate in $L^2(0, T; L^{\frac{2d}{d-1}}(Ω))$ is established in $C^{1, 1}$ cylinders under minimum smoothness conditions on the coefficients. This process relies on critical estimates of smoothing operators. We also develop a new construction of flux correctors in the parabolic manner and a sharp estimate for temporal boundary layers.
We consider the Boussinesq PDE perturbed by a time-dependent forcing. Even though there is no smoothing effect for arbitrary smooth initial data, we are able to apply the method of self-consistent bounds to deduce the existence of smooth classical periodic solutions in the vicinity of 0. The proof is non-perturbative and relies on construction of periodic isolating segments in the Galerkin projections.
We prove the existence of a smooth curve of periodic traveling wave solutions for the Zakharov system. We also show that this type of solutions are nonlinear stable by the periodic flow generated for the system mentioned before. An improvement of the work of Ya Ping is made, we prove the stability of the solitary wave solutions associated to the Zakharov system.
The global regularity problem for the periodic Navier-Stokes system asks whether to every smooth divergence-free initial datum $u_0: (\R/\Z)^3 \to \R^3$ there exists a global smooth solution u. In this note we observe (using a simple compactness argument) that this qualitative question is equivalent to the more quantitative assertion that there exists a non-decreasing function $F: \R^+ \to \R^+$ for which one has a local-in-time \emph{a priori} bound $$ \| u(T) \|_{H^1_x((\R/\Z)^3)} \leq F(\|u_0\|_{H^1_x((\R/\Z)^3)})$$ for all $0 < T \leq 1$ and all smooth solutions $u: [0,T] \times (\R/\Z)^3 …
We derive a precise energy stability criterion for smooth periodic waves in the Degasperis--Procesi (DP) equation. Compared to the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the number of negative eigenvalues of an associated Hessian operator changes in the existence region of smooth perodic waves. We utilize properties of the period function with respect to two parameters in order to obtain a smooth existence curve for the family of smooth periodic waves of a fixed period. The energy stability condition is derived on parts of this existence curve which correspond to either one or two negative eigenvalues of…
Smooth periodic travelling waves in the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation are revisited. We show that these periodic waves can be characterized in two different ways by using two different Hamiltonian structures. The standard formulation, common to the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation, has several disadvantages, e.g., the period function is not monotone and the quadratic energy form may have two rather than one negative eigenvalues. We explore the nonstandard formulation and prove that the period function is monotone and the quadratic energy form has only one simple negative eigenvalue. We deduce a…
We introduce a new constructive method for establishing lower bounds on convergence rates of periodic homogenization problems associated with divergence type elliptic operators. The construction is applied in two settings. First, we show that solutions to boundary layer problems for divergence type elliptic equations set in halfspaces and with infinitely smooth data, may converge to their corresponding boundary layer tails as slow as one wish depending on the position of the hyperplane. Second, we construct a Dirichlet problem for divergence type elliptic operators set in a bounded domain, and…
We study the time-periodic version of Evans approach to weak KAM theory. Evans minimization problem is equivalent to a first oder mean field game system. For the mechanical Hamiltonian we prove the existence of smooth solutions. We introduce the corresponding effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian and prove that they are smooth. We also consider the limiting behavior of the effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian, Mather measures and minimizers.
This paper is concerned with the wave length $λ$ of smooth periodic traveling wave solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. The set of these solutions can be parametrized using the wave height $a$ (or "peak-to-peak amplitude"). Our main result establishes monotonicity properties of the map $a\longmapsto λ(a)$, i.e., the wave length as a function of the wave height. We obtain the explicit bifurcation values, in terms of the parameters associated to the equation, which distinguish between the two possible qualitative behaviours of $λ(a)$, namely monotonicity and unimodality. The key point is to r…

The article is devoted to the generalization of the second Bogolyubov's theorem to non-almost periodic dynamical systems. We prove the analog of the second Bogolyubov's theorem for recurrent or pseudo recurrent dynamical systems in Banach spaces. Namely, we obtain the relation between a recurrent dynamical system and its averaged dynamical system. We also study existence of recurrent and pseudo recurrent motions (including special cases of periodic, quasi-periodic and almost periodic motions) in related nonautonomous systems.
Periodic and solitary travelling-wave solutions of an extended reduced Ostrovsky equation are investigated. Attention is restricted to solutions that, for the appropriate choice of certain constant parameters, reduce to solutions of the reduced Ostrovsky equation. It is shown how the nature of the waves may be categorized in a simple way by considering the value of a certain single combination of constant parameters. The periodic waves may be smooth humps, cuspons, loops or parabolic corner waves. The latter are shown to be the maximum-amplitude limit of a one-parameter family of periodic smoo…
$C^α$ and $W^{1,\infty}$ estimates for the first-order and second-order correctors in the homogenization are presented based on the translation invariant and Li-Vogelius's gradient estimate for the second order linear elliptic equation with piecewise smooth coefficients. If the data are smooth enough, the error of the first-order expansion for piecewise smooth coefficients is locally $O(ε)$ in the Hölder norm; it is locally $O(ε)$ in $W^{1,\infty}$ when coefficients are Lipschitz continuous. It can be partly extended to the nonlinear parabolic equation.
We consider the smooth, compactly supported solutions of the steady 3D Euler equations of incompressible fluids constructed by Gavrilov in 2019, and we study the corresponding fluid particle dynamics. This is an ode analysis, which contributes to the description of Gavrilov's vector field.
In this paper we establish a number of implications between various qualitative and quantitative versions of the global regularity problem for the Navier-Stokes equations, in the periodic, smooth finite energy, smooth $H^1$, Schwartz, or mild $H^1$ categories, and with or without a forcing term. In particular, we show that if one has global well-posedness in $H^1$ for the periodic Navier-Stokes problem with a forcing term, then one can obtain global regularity both for periodic and for Schwartz initial data (thus yielding a positive answer to both official formulations of the problem for the C…
We establish the existence of smooth critical sub-solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation on compact manifolds for smooth convex Hamiltonians, that is in the context of weak KAM theory, under the assumption that the Aubry set is the union of finitely many hyperbolic periodic orbits.
We study the stabilizing effect of rotational forcing in the nonlinear setting of two-dimensional shallow-water and more general models of compressible Euler equations. In [H. Liu and E. Tadmor, Phys. D 188 (2004), no. 3-4, 262-276] we have shown that the pressureless version of these equations admit global smooth solution for a large set of sub-critical initial configurations. In the present work we prove that when rotational force dominates the pressure, it \emph{prolongs} the life-span of smooth solutions for t < ln(1/d); here d << 1 is the ratio of the pressure gradient measured by the inv…
In this note we analyze smooth solutions of a $p$-system of the \textit{mixed} type. Motivating example for this is a 2-components reduction of the Benney moments chain which appears to be connected to theory of integrable systems. We don't assume a-priory that the solutions in question are in the Hyperbolic region. Our main result states that the only smooth solutions of the system which are periodic in $x$ are necessarily constants. As for initial value problem we prove that if the initial data is strictly hyperbolic and periodic in $x$ then the solution can not extend to $[t_0;+\infty)$ and…
We consider the periodic initial-value problem for the Serre equations of water-wave theory and its semidiscrete approximation in the space of smooth periodic polynomial splines. We prove that the semidiscrete problem is well posed, locally in time, and satisfies a discrete positivity property for the water depth.
