We consider the time-dependent nonlinear system $\dot q(t)=u(t)X(q(t))+(1-u(t))Y(q(t))$, where $q\in\R^2$, $X$ and $Y$ are two %$C^\infty$ smooth vector fields, globally asymptotically stable at the origin and $u:[0,\infty)\to\{0,1\}$ is an arbitrary measurable function. Analysing the topology of the set where $X$ and $Y$ are parallel, we give some sufficient and some necessary conditions for global asymptotic stability, uniform with respect to $u(.)$. Such conditions can be verified without any integration or construction of a Lyapunov function, and they are robust under small perturbations of the vector fields.
This paper is concerned with the stability problem for the planar linear switched system $\dot x(t)=u(t)A_1x(t)+(1-u(t))A_2x(t)$, where the real matrices $A_1,A_2\in \R^{2\times 2}$ are Hurwitz and $u(\cdot) [0,\infty[\to\{0,1\}$ is a measurable function. We give coordinate-invariant necessary and sufficient conditions on $A_1$ and $A_2$ under which the system is asymptotically stable for arbitrary switching functions $u(\cdot)$. The new conditions unify those given in previous papers and are simpler to be verified since we are reduced to study 4 cases instead of 20. Most of the cases are anal…
Consider the planar linear switched system $\dot x(t)=u(t)Ax(t)+(1-u(t))Bx(t),$ where $A$ and $B$ are two $2\times2$ real matrices, $x \in \R^2$, and $u(.):[0,\infty[\to\{0,1\}$ is a measurable function. In this paper we consider the problem of finding a (coordinate-invariant) necessary and sufficient condition on $A$ and $B$ under which the system is asymptotically stable for arbitrary switching functions $u(.)$. This problem was solved in previous works under the assumption that both $A$ and $B$ are diagonalizable. In this paper we conclude this study, by providing a necessary and sufficient…
This paper investigates the mean stability of a class of discrete-time stochastic switched linear systems using the $L^p$-norm joint spectral radius of the probability distributions governing the switched systems. First we prove a converse Lyapunov theorem that shows the equivalence between the mean stability and the existence of a homogeneous Lyapunov function. Then we show that, when $p$ goes to $\infty$, the stability of the $p$th mean becomes equivalent to the absolute asymptotic stability of an associated deterministic switched system. Finally we study the mean stability of Markovian swit…
We report conditions on a switching signal that guarantee that solutions of a switched linear systems converge asymptotically to zero. These conditions are apply to continuous, discrete-time and hybrid switched linear systems, both those having stable subsystems and mixtures of stable and unstable subsystems.
We study the stability of switched systems where the dynamic modes are described by systems of higher-order linear differential equations not necessarily sharing the same state space. Concatenability of trajectories at the switching instants is specified by gluing conditions, i.e. algebraic conditions on the trajectories and their derivatives at the switching instant. We provide sufficient conditions for stability based on LMIs for systems with general gluing conditions. We also analyse the role of positive-realness in providing sufficient polynomial-algebraic conditions for stability of two-m…
The stability problem of a class of nonlinear switched systems defined on compact sets with state-dependent switching is considered. Instead of the Caratheodory solutions, the general Filippov solutions are studied. This encapsulates solutions with infinite switching in finite time and sliding modes in the neighborhood of the switching surfaces. In this regard, a Lyapunov-like stability theorem, based on the theory of differential inclusions, is formulated. Additionally, the results are extended to switched systems with simplical uncertainty. It is also demonstrated that, for the special case …
We study the asymptotic stability properties of nonlinear switched systems under the assumption of the existence of a common weak Lyapunov function. We consider the class of nonchaotic inputs, which generalize the different notions of inputs with dwell-time, and the class of general ones. For each of them we provide some sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability in terms of the geometry of certain sets. The results, which extend those of Balde, Jouan about linear systems, are illustrated by many examples.
Can we conclude the stability of an unknown dynamical system from the knowledge of a finite number of snapshots of trajectories? We tackle this black-box problem for switched linear systems. We show that, for any given random set of observations, one can give probabilistic stability guarantees. The probabilistic nature of these guarantees implies a trade-off between their quality and the desired level of confidence. We provide an explicit way of computing the best stability-like guarantee, as a function of both the number of observations and the required level of confidence. Our proof techniqu…
In this paper we derive stability conditions for a switched system where switching occurs between linear descriptor systems of different indices. In particular, our results can be used to analyse the stability of the important case when switching between a standard system and an index one descriptor system, and systems where switching occurs between an index one and and an index two descriptor system. Examples are given to illustrate the use of our results.
This paper is concerned with the study of both, local and global, uniform asymptotic stability for switched nonlinear time-varying (NLTV) systems through the detectability of output-maps. With this aim the notion of reduced limiting control systems for switched NLTV systems whose switchings verify time/state dependent constraints, and the concept of weakly zero-state detectability for those reduced limiting systems are introduced. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the (global)uniform asymptotic stability of families of trajectories of the switched system are obtained in terms of this det…
This paper mainly deals with switched linear systems defined by a pair of Hurwitz matrices that share a common but not strict quadratic Lyapunov function. Its aim is to give sufficient conditions for such a system to be GUAS.We show that this property of being GUAS is equivalent to the uniform observability on $[0,+\infty)$ of a bilinear system defined on a subspace whose dimension is in most cases much smaller than the dimension of the switched system. Some sufficient conditions of uniform asymptotic stability are then deduced from the equivalence theorem, and illustrated by examples. The resul…
Consider the random process (Xt) solution of dXt/dt = A(It) Xt where (It) is a Markov process on {0,1} and A0 and A1 are real Hurwitz matrices on R2. Assuming that there exists lambda in (0, 1) such that (1 - λ)A0 + \lambdaA1 has a positive eigenvalue, we establish that the norm of Xt may converge to 0 or infinity, depending on the the jump rate of the process I. An application to product of random matrices is studied. This paper can be viewed as a probabilistic counterpart of the paper "A note on stability conditions for planar switched systems" by Balde, Boscain and Mason.
A class of discrete-time nonlinear positive time-delay switched systems with sector-type nonlinearities is studied. Sufficient conditions for the existence of common and switched diagonal Lyapunov--Krasovskii functionals for this system class are derived; these are expressed as feasibility conditions for systems of linear algebraic inequalities. Corresponding spectral conditions for the existence of common L--K functionals are also described. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed approaches can be applied to discrete-time models of digital filters and neural networks. Finally, a numerical…
We propose an extension of the theory of control sets to the case of inputs satisfying a dwell-time constraint. Although the class of such inputs is not closed under concatenation, we propose a suitably modified definition of control sets that allows to recover some important properties known in the concatenable case. In particular we apply the control set construction to dwell-time linear switched systems, characterizing their maximal Lyapunov exponent looking only at trajectories whose angular component is periodic. We also use such a construction to characterize supports of invariant measur…
We study stability criteria for discrete-time switched systems and provide a meta-theorem that characterizes all Lyapunov theorems of a certain canonical type. For this purpose, we investigate the structure of sets of LMIs that provide a sufficient condition for stability. Various such conditions have been proposed in the literature in the past fifteen years. We prove in this note that a family of languagetheoretic conditions recently provided by the authors encapsulates all the possible LMI conditions, thus putting a conclusion to this research effort. As a corollary, we show that it is PSPAC…
In this paper, we develop tools to establish almost sure stability of stochastic switched systems whose switching signal is constrained by an automaton. After having provided the necessary generalizations of existing results in the setting of stochastic graphs, we provide a characterization of almost sure stability in terms of multiple Lyapunov functions. We introduce the concept of lifts, providing formal expansions of stochastic graphs, together with the guarantee of conserving the underlying probability framework. We show how these techniques, firstly introduced in the deterministic setting…
We present a new data-driven method to provide probabilistic stability guarantees for black-box switched linear systems. By sampling a finite number of observations of trajectories, we construct approximate Lyapunov functions and deduce the stability of the underlying system with a user-defined confidence. The number of observations required to attain this confidence level on the guarantee is explicitly characterized. Our contribution is twofold: first, we propose a novel approach for common quadratic Lyapunov functions, relying on sensitivity analysis of a quasi-convex optimization program. B…
Switched linear hyperbolic partial differential equations are considered in this paper. They model infinite dimensional systems of conservation laws and balance laws, which are potentially affected by a distributed source or sink term. The dynamics and the boundary conditions are subject to abrupt changes given by a switching signal, modeled as a piecewise constant function and possibly a dwell time. By means of Lyapunov techniques some sufficient conditions are obtained for the exponential stability of the switching system, uniformly for all switching signals. Different cases are considered w…
In this paper we consider switched nonlinear systems under average dwell time switching signals, with an otherwise arbitrary compact index set and with additional constraints in the switchings. We present invariance principles for these systems and derive by using observability-like notions some convergence and asymptotic stability criteria. These results enable us to analyze the stability of solutions of switched systems with both state-dependent constrained switching and switching whose logic has memory, i.e., the active subsystem only can switch to a prescribed subset of subsystems.
In this paper, incremental exponential asymptotic stability of a class of switched Carathéodory nonlinear systems is studied based on the novel concept of measure of switched matrices via multiple norms and the transaction coefficients between these norms. This model is rather general and includes the case of staircase switching signals as a special case. Sufficient conditions are derived for incremental stability allowing for the system to be incrementally exponentially asymptotically stable even if some of its modes are unstable in some time periods. Numerical examples on switched linear sys…
This paper proposes a unified approach for studying global exponential stability of a general class of switched systems described by time-varying nonlinear functional differential equations. Some new delay-independent criteria of global exponential stability are established for this class of systems under arbitrary switching which satisfies some assumptions on the average dwell time. The obtained criteria are shown to cover and improve many previously known results, including, in particular, sufficient conditions for absolute exponential stability of switched time-delay systems with sector non…
Switched systems constitute an important modeling paradigm faithfully describing many engineering systems in which software interacts with the physical world. Despite considerable progress on stability and stabilization of switched systems, the constant evolution of technology demands that we make similar progress with respect to different, and perhaps more complex, objectives. This paper describes one particular approach to address these different objectives based on the construction of approximately equivalent (bisimilar) symbolic models for switched systems. The main contribution of this pa…
This article is concerned with stability analysis and stabilization of randomly switched nonlinear systems. These systems may be regarded as piecewise deterministic stochastic systems: the discrete switches are triggered by a stochastic process which is independent of the state of the system, and between two consecutive switching instants the dynamics are deterministic. Our results provide sufficient conditions for almost sure global asymptotic stability using Lyapunov-based methods when individual subsystems are stable and a certain ``slow switching'' condition holds. This slow switching cond…
This paper extends some results on the S-Lemma proposed by Yakubovich and uses the improved results to investigate the asymptotic stability of a class of switched nonlinear systems. Firstly, the strict S-Lemma is extended from quadratic forms to homogeneous functions with respect to any dilation, where the improved S-Lemma is named the strict homogeneous S-Lemma (the SHS-Lemma for short). In detail, this paper indicates that the strict S-Lemma does not necessarily hold for homogeneous functions that are not quadratic forms, and proposes a necessary and sufficient condition under which the SHS-…
This paper deals with input/output-to-state stability (IOSS) of switched nonlinear systems in the discrete-time setting. We present an algorithm to construct periodic switching signals that obey pre-specified restrictions on admissible switches between the subsystems and admissible dwell times on the subsystems, and identify sufficient conditions on the individual subsystems, the admissible switches and admissible dwell times under which a switching signal obtained from our algorithm preserves stability of a switched system with overwhelming probability. We recover our earlier result on probab…
This paper addresses invariance principles for a certain class of switched nonlinear systems. We provide an extension of LaSalle's Invariance Principle for these systems and state asymptotic stability criteria. We also present some related results that deal with the compactness of the trajectories of these switched systems and that are interesting by their own.
Switched linear systems are time-varying nonlinear systems whose dynamics switch between different modes, where each mode corresponds to different linear dynamics. They arise naturally to model unexpected failures, environment uncertainties or system noises during system operation. In this paper, we consider a special class of switched linear systems where the mode switches are governed by Markov decision processes (MDPs). We study the problem of synthesizing a policy in an MDP that stabilizes the switched system. Given a policy, the switched linear system becomes a Markov jump linear system w…
This article is concerned with stability analysis and stabilization of randomly switched systems under a class of switching signals. The switching signal is modeled as a jump stochastic (not necessarily Markovian) process independent of the system state; it selects, at each instant of time, the active subsystem from a family of systems. Sufficient conditions for stochastic stability (almost sure, in the mean, and in probability) of the switched system are established when the subsystems do not possess control inputs, and not every subsystem is required to be stable. These conditions are employ…
This paper tackles state feedback control of switched linear systems under arbitrary switching. We propose a data-driven control framework that allows to compute a stabilizing state feedback using only a finite set of observations of trajectories with quadratic and sum of squares (SOS) Lyapunov functions. We do not require any knowledge on the dynamics or the switching signal, and as a consequence, we aim at solving \emph{uniform} stabilization problems in which the feedback is stabilizing for all possible switching sequences. In order to generalize the solution obtained from trajectories to t…
This paper investigates the stability of switched linear systems whose switching signal is modeled as a stochastic process called a regenerative process. We show that the mean stability of such a switched system is characterized by the spectral radius of a matrix. The matrix is obtained by taking the expectation of the transition matrix of the system on one cycle of the underlying regenerative process. The characterization generalizes Floquet's theorem for the stability analysis of linear time-periodic systems. We illustrate the result with the stability analysis of a linear system with a fail…
This paper deals with the stability analysis problem of discrete-time switched linear systems with ranged dwell time. A novel concept called L-switching-cycle is proposed, which contains sequences of multiple activation cycles satisfying the prescribed ranged dwell time constraint. Based on L-switching-cycle, two sufficient conditions are proposed to ensure the global uniform asymptotic stability of discrete-time switched linear systems. It is noted that two conditions are equivalent in stability analysis with the same $L$-switching-cycle. These two sufficient conditions can be viewed as gener…
Starting from a finite family of continuously differentiable positive definite functions, we study conditions under which a function obtained by max-min combinations is a Lyapunov function, establishing stability for two kinds of nonlinear dynamical systems: a) Differential inclusions where the set-valued right-hand-side comprises the convex hull of a finite number of vector fields, and b) Autonomous switched systems with a state-dependent switching signal. We investigate generalized notions of directional derivatives for these max-min functions, and use them in deriving stability conditions w…
The joint spectral radius (JSR) of a set of matrices characterizes the maximal asymptotic growth rate of an infinite product of matrices of the set. This quantity appears in a number of applications including the stability of switched and hybrid systems. A popular method used for the stability analysis of these systems searches for a Lyapunov function with convex optimization tools. We analyse the accuracy of this method for constrained switched systems, a class of systems that has attracted increasing attention recently. We provide a new guarantee for the upper bound provided by the sum of sq…
We are concerned with input-to-state stability (ISS) of randomly switched systems. We provide preliminary results dealing with sufficient conditions for stochastic versions of ISS for randomly switched systems without control inputs, and with the aid of universal formulae we design controllers for ISS-disturbance attenuation when control inputs are present. Two types of switching signals are considered: the first is characterized by a statistically slow-switching condition, and the second by a class of semi-Markov processes.
In this paper we extend to a generic class of piecewise smooth dynamical systems a fundamental tool for the analysis of convergence of smooth dynamical systems: contraction theory. We focus on switched systems satisfying Caratheodory conditions for the existence and unicity of a solution. After generalizing the classical definition of contraction to this class of dynamical systems, we give sufficient conditions for global exponential convergence of their trajectories. The theoretical results are then applied to solve a set of representative problems including proving global asymptotic stabilit…
In this paper, we consider linear switched systems $\dot x(t)=A_{u(t)} x(t)$, $x\in\R^n$, $u\in U$, and the problem of asymptotic stability for arbitrary switching functions, uniform with respect to switching ({\bf UAS} for short). We first prove that, given a {\bf UAS} system, it is always possible to build a common polynomial Lyapunov function. Then our main result is that the degree of that common polynomial Lyapunov function is not uniformly bounded over all the {\bf UAS} systems. This result answers a question raised by Dayawansa and Martin. A generalization to a class of piecewise-polyno…
We study the spread of disease in an SIS model. The model considered is a time-varying, switched model, in which the parameters of the SIS model are subject to abrupt change. We show that the joint spectral radius can be used as a threshold parameter for this model in the spirit of the basic reproduction number for time-invariant models. We also present conditions for persistence and the existence of periodic orbits for the switched model and results for a stochastic switched model.

This paper is concerned with the problem of robust reliable control for a class of uncertain 2D discrete switched systems with state delays represented by a model of Roesser type. The parameter uncertainties are assumed to be norm-bounded. Firstly, delay-dependent sufficient condition for the exponential stability of the discrete 2D systems with state delays is established. Then, the concept of average dwell time is extended to 2D switched systems, and a reliable state feedback controller is developed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) such that the resulting closed-loop system is e…
This paper studies attack-resilient estimation of a class of switched nonlinear systems subject to stochastic noises. The systems are threatened by both of signal attacks and switching attacks. The problem is formulated as the joint estimation of states, attack vectors and modes of hidden-mode switched systems. We propose an estimation algorithm which is composed of a bank of state and attack vector estimators and a mode estimator. The mode estimator selects the most likely mode based on modes' posterior probabilities induced by the discrepancies between obtained outputs and predicted outputs.…
