The paper is devoted to the local classification of generic control-affine systems on an n-dimensional manifold with scalar input for any n>3 or with two inputs for n=4 and n=5, up to state-feedback transformations, preserving the affine structure. First using the Poincare series of moduli numbers we introduce the intrinsic numbers of functional moduli of each prescribed number of variables on which a classification problem depends. In order to classify affine systems with scalar input we associate with such a system the canonical frame by normalizing some structural functions in a commutative relation of the vector fields, which define our control system. Then, using this canonical frame, we introduce the canonical coordinates and find a complete system of state-feedback invariants of the system. It also gives automatically the micro-local (i.e. local in state-input space) classification of the generic non-affine n-dimensional control system with scalar input for n>2. Further we show how the problem of feedback-equivalence of affine systems with two-dimensional input in state space of dimensions 4 and 5 can be reduced to the same problem for affine systems with scalar input. In order to make this reduction we distinguish the subsystem of our control system, consisting of the directions of all extremals in dimension 4 and all abnormal extremals in dimension 5 of the time optimal problem, defined by the original control system. In each classification problem under consideration we find the intrinsic numbers of functional moduli of each prescribed number of variables according to its Poincare series.
We study the reach control problem for affine systems on simplices, and the focus is on cases when it is known that the problem is not solvable by continuous state feedback. We examine from a geometric viewpoint the structural properties of the system which make continuous state feedbacks fail. This structure is encoded by so-called reach control indices, which are defined and developed in the paper. Based on these indices, we propose a subdivision algorithm and associated piecewise affine feedback. The method is shown to solve the reach control problem in all remaining cases, assuming it is s…
For general nonlinear autonomous systems, a Lyapunov characterization for the possibility of semi-global asymptotic stabilizability by means of a time-varying sampled-data feedback is established. We exploit this result in order to derive a Lie algebraic sufficient condition for sampled-data feedback semi-global stabilizability of affine in the control nonlinear systems with non-zero drift terms. The corresponding proposition constitutes an extension of the "Artstein-Sontag" theorem on feedback stabilization.
The objective of this document is to design continuous feedback controls for global asymptotic stabilization (GAS) of affine systems, with control restricted to a compact and convex set (CVS). This stabilization problem is solved based on a design of a feedback function restricted to the hyperbox and obtained by means of the CLF theory. By "normalizing" this feedback, the continuous stabilizer restricted to CVS is obtained.
In this paper, we give a complete geometric characterization of control systems, with m+1 inputs, locally static feedback equivalent to a triangular form compatible with the chained form, for m=1, respectively with the m-chained form, for m>1. They are x-flat systems. We provide a system of first order PDE's to be solved in order to find all x-flat outputs, for m=1, respectively all minimal x-flat outputs, for m>1. We illustrate our results by examples, in particular by an application to a mechanical system: the coin rolling without slipping on a moving table.
In this manuscript, we investigate symbolic abstractions that capture the behavior of piecewise-affine systems under input constraints and bounded external noise. This is accomplished by considering local affine feedback controllers that are jointly designed with the symbolic model, which ensures that an alternating simulation relation between the system and the abstraction holds. The resulting symbolic system is called a state-feedback abstraction and we show that it can be deterministic even when the original piecewise-affine system is unstable and non-deterministic. One benefit of this appr…
The general goal of this paper is to identify a transformation group that can be used to describe a class of feedback interconnections involving subsystems which are modeled solely in terms of Chen-Fliess functional expansions or Fliess operators and are independent of the existence of any state space models. This interconnection, called an output affine feedback connection, is distinguished from conventional output feedback by the presence of a multiplier in an outer loop. Once this transformation group is established, three basic questions are addressed. How can this transformation group be …
The takeoff point of this paper is to generalize the existing stock trading results for a class of affine feedback controller to include consideration of a stop-loss order. Using the geometric Brownian motion as the underlying stock price model, our main result is to provide a closed-form expression for the cumulative distribution function for the trading profit or loss. In addition, we show that the affine feedback controller with stop-loss order indeed generalizes the result without stop order in the sense of distribution function. Some simulations and illustrative examples are also provided…
In this paper, we present a new control policy parametrization for the finite-horizon covariance steering problem for discrete-time Gaussian linear systems (DTGLS) which can reduce the latter stochastic optimal control problem to a tractable optimization problem. The covariance steering problem seeks for a feedback control policy that will steer the state covariance of a DTGLS to a desired positive definite matrix in finite time. We consider two different formulations of the covariance steering problem, one with hard terminal LMI constraints (hard-constrained covariance steering) and another o…
We propose to explore switching methods in order to recover some properties of Kalmanlike observers for output feedback stabilization of state-affine systems that may present observability singularities. The self-tuning gain matrix in Kalman-like observers tend to be singular in the case of non-uniformly observable systems. We show in the case of state-affine systems with observable target that it can be prevented by dynamically monitoring observability of the system, and switching the control when it becomes critical.
This paper studies the problem for an affine hypersurface system to reach a polytopic target set starting from inside a polytope in the state space. We present an exhaustive solution which begins with a characterization of states which can reach the target by open-loop control and concludes with a systematic procedure to synthesize a feedback control. Our emphasis is on methods of subdivision, triangulation, and covers which explicitly account for the capabilities of the control system. In contrast with previous literature, the partition methods are guaranteed to yield a correct feedback synth…
This ArXiv paper is a supplement to [7] and contains proofs of preliminary claims omitted in [7] for lack of space. The paper deals with exploring a necessary condition for solvability of the Reach Control Problem (RCP) using affine feedback. The goal of the RCP is to drive the states of an affine control system to a given facet of a simplex without first exiting the simplex through other facets. In analogy to the problem of a topological obstruction to the RCP for continuous state feedback studied in [7], this paper formulates the problem of an affine obstruction and solves it in the case of …
The goal of this paper is to address finite-horizon minimum variance and covariance steering problems for discrete-time stochastic (Gaussian) linear systems. On the one hand, the minimum variance problem seeks for a control policy that will steer the state mean of an uncertain system to a prescribed quantity while minimizing the trace of its terminal state covariance (or variance). On the other hand, the covariance steering problem seeks for a control policy that will steer the covariance of the terminal state to a prescribed positive definite matrix. We propose a solution approach that relies…
For nonlinear affine in the control systems, a Lie algebraic sufficient condition for sampled-data feedback semi-global stabilization is established. We use this result, in order to derive sufficient conditions for sampled-data feedback stabilization for a couple of three-dimensional systems.
This paper considers the class of deterministic continuous-time optimal control problems (OCPs) with piecewise-affine (PWA) vector field, polynomial Lagrangian and semialgebraic input and state constraints. The OCP is first relaxed as an infinite-dimensional linear program (LP) over a space of occupation measures. This LP, a particular instance of the generalized moment problem, is then approached by an asymptotically converging hierarchy of linear matrix inequality (LMI) relaxations. The relaxed dual of the original LP returns a polynomial approximation of the value function that solves the H…
A Deterministic affine quadratic optimal control problem is considered. Due to the nature of the problem, optimal controls exist under some very mild conditions. Further, it is shown that under some assumptions, the value function is differentiable and therefore satisfies the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in the classical sense. Moreover, the so-called quasi-Riccati equation is derived and any optimal control admits a state feedback representation.
Model predictive control (MPC) samples a generally unknown and complicated feedback law point by point. The solution for the current state $x$ contains, however, more information than only the optimal signal $u$ for this particular state. In fact, it provides an optimal affine feedback law $x\rightarrow u(x)$ on a polytope $Π\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, i.e., on a full-dimensional state space set. It is an obvious idea to reuse this affine feedback law as long as possible. Reusing it on its polytope $Π$ is too conservative, however, because any $Π$ is a state space set with a common affine law $x\ri…
The problem of optimizing affine feedback laws that explicitly steer the mean and covariance of an uncertain system state in the presence of a Gaussian random field is considered. Spatially-dependent disturbances are successively approximated with respect to a nominal trajectory by a sequence of jointly Gaussian random vectors. Sequential updates to the nominal control inputs are computed via convex optimization that includes the effect of affine state feedback, the perturbing effects of spatial disturbances, and chance constraints on the closed-loop state and control. The developed method is …
In this report, we analyze and design feedback policies for discrete-time Piecewise-Affine (PWA) systems with uncertainty in both the affine dynamics and the polytopic partition. The main idea is to utilise the Difference-of-Convex (DC) decomposition of continuous PWA systems to derive quadratic Lyapunov functions as stability certificates and stabilizing affine policies in a higher dimensional space. When projected back to the state space, we obtain time-varying PWQ Lyapunov functions and time-varying PWA feedback policies.
Recently, a regional MPC approach has been proposed that exploits the piecewise affine structure of the optimal solution (without computing the entire explicit solution before). Here, regional refers to the idea of using the affine feedback law that is optimal in a vicinity of the current state of operation, and therefore provides the optimal input signal without requiring to solve a QP. In the present paper, we apply the idea of regional MPC to min-max MPC problems. We show that the new robust approach can significantly reduce the number of QPs to be solved within min-max MPC resulting in a r…
Control-affine output systems generically present observability singularities, i.e. inputs that make the system unobservable. This proves to be a difficulty in the context of output feedback stabilization, where this issue is usually discarded by uniform observability assumptions for state feedback stabilizable systems. Focusing on state feedback stabilizable bilinear control systems with linear output, we use a transversality approach to provide perturbations of the stabilizing state feedback law, in order to make our system observable in any time even in the presence of singular inputs.
Hybrid systems, and especially piecewise affine (PWA) systems, are often used to model gene regulatory networks. In this paper we elaborate on previous work about control problems for this class of models, using also some recent results guaranteeing the existence and uniqueness of limit cycles, based solely on a discrete abstraction of the system and its interaction structure. Our aim is to control the transition graph of the PWA system to obtain an oscillatory behaviour, which is indeed of primary functional importance in numerous biological networks; we show how it is possible to control the…
In this paper, a stochastic asymptotic stabilization method is proposed for deterministic input-affine control systems, which are randomized by including Gaussian white noises in control inputs. The sufficient condition is derived for the diffucion coefficients so that there exist stochastic control Lyapunov functions for the systems. To illustrate the usefulness of the sufficient condition, the authors propose the stochastic continuous feedback law, which makes the origin of the Brockett integrator become globally asymptotically stable in probability.
Virtual constraints are relations imposed in a control system that become invariant via feedback, instead of real physical constraints acting on the system. Nonholonomic systems are mechanical systems with non-integrable constraints on the velocities. In this work, we introduce the notion of virtual affine nonholonomic constraints in a geometric framework. More precisely, it is a controlled invariant affine distribution associated with an affine connection mechanical control system. We show the existence and uniqueness of a control law defining a virtual affine nonholonomic constraint.
This paper proposes an optimization with penalty-based feedback design framework for safe stabilization of control affine systems. Our starting point is the availability of a control Lyapunov function (CLF) and a control barrier function (CBF) defining affine-in-the-input inequalities that certify, respectively, the stability and safety objectives for the dynamics. Leveraging ideas from penalty methods for constrained optimization, the proposed design framework imposes one of the inequalities as a hard constraint and the other one as a soft constraint. We study the properties of the closed-loo…
