Self Duality and Codings for Expansive Group Automorphisms

Lind and Schmidt have shown that the homoclinic group of a cyclic $\Z^k$ algebraic dynamical system is isomorphic to the dual of the phase group. We show that this duality result is part of an exact sequence if $k=1$. The exact sequence is a well known algebraic object, which has been applied by Schmidt in his work on rigidity. We show that it can be derived from dynamical considerations only. The constructions naturally lead to an almost 1-1-coding of certain Pisot automorphisms by their associated $β$-shift, generalizing similar results for Pisot automorphisms of the torus.

Expansive Automorphisms on Locally Compact Groups

We show that any connected locally compact group which admits an expansive automorphism is nilpotent. We also show that for any locally compact group $G$, $α\in {\rm Aut}(G)$ is expansive if and only if for any $α$-invariant closed subgroup $H$ which is either compact or normal, the restriction of $α$ to $H$ is expansive and the quotient map on $G/H$ corresponding to $α$ is expansive. We get a structure theorem for locally compact groups admitting expansive automorphisms. We prove that an automorphism on a non-discrete locally compact group can not be both distal and expansive.

Expansive systems on lattices

We study expansive dynamical systems in the setting of distributive lattices and their automorphisms, the usual notion of expansiveness for a homeomorphism of a compact metric space being the particular case when the lattice is the topology of the phase space ordered by inclusion and the automorphism the one induced by the homeomorphism, mapping open sets to open sets. Nilpotent Lie groups and hyperbolic automorphisms

A connected Lie group admitting an expansive automorphism is known to be nilpotent, but all nilpotent Lie groups do not admit expansive automorphism. In this article, we find sufficient conditions for a class of nilpotent Lie groups to admit expansive automorphism.

Expansive automorphisms of totally disconnected, locally compact groups

We study automorphisms $α$ of a totally disconnected, locally compact group $G$ which are expansive in the sense that, for some identity neighbourhood $U$, the sets $α^n(U)$ (for integers $n$) intersect in the trivial group. Notably, we prove that the automorphism induced by $α$ on $G/N$ for an $α$-stable closed normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ is always expansive. Expansive Actions of Automorphisms of Locally Compact Groups $G$ on ${\rm Sub}_G$

For a locally compact metrizable group $G$, we consider the action of ${\rm Aut}(G)$ on ${\rm Sub}_G$, the space of all closed subgroups of $G$ endowed with the Chabauty topology. This survey gives an account of an algebraic construction of symbolic covers and representations of ergodic automorphisms of compact abelian groups, initiated by A.M. Vershik around 1992 for hyperbolic automorphisms of finite-dimensional tori. A dichotomy in orbit-growth for commuting automorphisms

A general framework for investigating topological actions of $Z^d$ on compact metric spaces was proposed by Boyle and Lind in terms of expansive behavior along lower-dimensional subspaces of $R^d$. Expansive algebraic actions of discrete residually finite amenable groups and their entropy

We prove an entropy formula for certain expansive actions of a countable discrete residually finite group $Γ$ by automorphisms of compact abelian groups in terms of Fuglede-Kadison determinants. Ergodicity of algebraic actions of nilpotent groups

An algebraic $Γ$-action is an action of a countable group $Γ$ on a compact abelian group $X$ by continuous automorphisms of $X$. We prove that any expansive algebraic action of a finitely generated nilpotent group $Γ$ on a connected group $X$ is ergodic. An arithmetic group associated with a Pisot unit and its symbolic-dynamical representatiom

To a given Pisot unit $β$ we associate a finite abelian group whose size appears to be equal to the discriminant of $β$. We call it the Pisot group and find its representation in the two-sided $β$-compactum in the case of $β$ satisfying the relation $Fin(β)=\Bbb Z[β]\cap[0,1)$. As a motivation for the definition, we show that the Pisot group is the kernel of some important arithmetic coding of the toral automorphism given by the companion matrix naturally associated with $β$.
