Here, we utilize facts about the big Chern classes discovered by M. Kapranov and independently by M. V. Nori to prove certain results about the nonexistence of certain morphisms from Grassmannian to Grassmannian in characteristic 0. In particular, we show that the filtration F_. on CH^l(X) where F_rCH^l(X) is the linear span of ch_l(V) for all vector bundles V of rank <=r is nontrivial as a theory by showing that for a fixed l>=2, for infinitely many r, for a Grassmannian of r dimensional quotient spaces in an n dimensional vector space (n sufficiently large) over a field of charactersitic 0, ch_l(Q) is in F_rCH^l(G(r,n)) but not in F^(r-1)CH^l(G(r,n)) where Q is the universal quotient bundle of the Grassmannian G(r,n). Separately but using similar methods, we show that for r>=2, if Q denotes the universal quotient bundle of the Grassmannian of r dimensional quotients G(r,n), n>=2r+1, then the class [ψ^pQ] can never be equal to the class of a genuine vector bundle in K(G). In parallel, we obtain a formula for the bid Chern classes in terms of the ch_l. This leads to the identification of proper subfunctors of the Hodge functors H^q(X, Ω^p) in characteristic 0.
In this note we describe the image of $\PP^2$ in $ Gr(2, \CC^{4})$ under a morphism given by a rank two vector bundle on $\PP^2$ with Chern classes $(2,2).$
The aim of this paper is to construct certain closed embeddings of Grassmannian varieties, using tensor operations on vector bundles. These embeddings generalize Segre and Plücker morphisms.
If $¶^\infty$ is the projective ind-space, i.e. $¶^\infty$ is the inductive limit of linear embeddings of complex projective spaces, the Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin (BVT) Theorem claims that every finite rank vector bundle on $¶^\infty$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of line bundles. We extend this theorem to general sequences of morphisms between projective spaces by proving that, if there are infinitely many morphisms of degree higher than one, every vector bundle of finite rank on the inductive limit is trivial. We then establish a relative version of these results, and apply it to the study of …
We give a new, fully mathematical, construction of the space of local operators in the holomorphic-topological twist of 4d $\mathcal N=2$ gauge theories. It is based on computations of morphism spaces in the DG category of line operators, which (by work of Kapustin-Saulina and Cautis-Williams) may be represented as ind-coherent sheaves on the affine Grassmannian and, more generally, on the $\mathcal R_{G,N}$ spaces of Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima. We prove that characters of our morphisms spaces reproduce the Schur indices of 4d $\mathcal N=2$ theories, and that the spaces themselves agree wi…
We describe the action of the different Frobenius morphisms on the cohomology ring of the moduli stack of algebraic vector bundles of fixed rank and determinant on an algebraic curve over a finite field in characteristic p and analyse special situations like vector bundles on the projective line and relations with infinite Grassmannians.
We look at the following question raised by Kollár and Peskine. (Actually, it is a slightly weaker version of their question.) Let $V_t$ be a family of rank two vector bundles on $\Bbb P^3$. Assume that the general member of the family is a trivial vector bundle. Then, is the special member $V_0$ also a trivial vector bundle? We show that this question is equivalent to the nonexistence of morphisms from $\Bbb P^3\to \mathcal{X}$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is the infinite Grassmannian associated to SL(2). We further reduce this question to the nonexistence of $\Bbb C^*$-equivariant morphisms from $\B…
Let G^\vee be a complex simple algebraic group. We describe certain morphisms of G^\vee(\calO)-equivariant complexes of sheaves on the affine Grassmannian \Gr of G^\vee in terms of certain morphisms of G-equivariant coherent sheaves on \frakg, where G is the Langlands dual group of G^\vee and \frakg is its Lie algebra. This can be regarded as an example of the derived Satake correspondence.
Let U be the tautological subbundle on the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, n)$. There is a natural morphism $\mathrm{Tot}(U) \to \mathbb{A}^n$. Using it, we give a semiorthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathrm{Tot}(U))$ into several exceptional objects and several copies of $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathbb{A}^n)$. We also prove a global version of this result: given a vector bundle $E$ with a regular section $s$, consider a subvariety of the relative Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, E)$ of those subspaces which contain the value of $s$. The derived category of t…
Let $S$ be the first degeneracy locus of a morphism of vector bundles corresponding to a general matrix of linear forms in $\mathbb{P}^s$. We prove that, under certain positivity conditions, its Hilbert square $\mathrm{Hilb}^2(S)$ is isomorphic to the zero locus of a global section of an irreducible homogeneous vector bundle on a product of Grassmannians. Our construction involves a naturally associated Fano variety, and an explicit description of the isomorphism.
A new relation between Prym varieties of arbitrary morphisms of algebraic curves and integrable systems is discovered. The action of maximal commutative subalgebras of the formal loop algebra of GL(n) defined on certain infinite-dimensional Grassmannians is studied. It is proved that every finite-dimensional orbit of the action of traceless elements of these commutative Lie algebras is isomorphic to the Prym variety associated with a morphism of algebraic curves. Conversely, it is shown that every Prym variety can be realized as a finite-dimensional orbit of the action of traceless diagonal el…
Let $R$ be the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}=\operatorname{Gr}(2,n)$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we give a completely characteristic free description of the decomposition of $R$, considered as a graded $R^p$-module, into indecomposables ("Frobenius summands"). As a corollary we obtain a similar decomposition for the Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf of $\mathbb{G}$ and we obtain in particular that this pushforward is almost never a tilting bundle. On the other hand we show that $R$ provides a "noncom…
Let $M(n,ξ)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n\geq 3$ and fixed determinant $ξ$ over a smooth projective algebraic curve $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ of genus $g\geq 4.$ We use the gonality of the curve and $r$-Hecke morphisms to describe a smooth open set and to compute the dimension of a component of the Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{M(n,ξ)}$, of the scheme of morphisms $Mor(\mathbb{G},M(n,ξ))$ and of the moduli space $ M_{X \times \mathbb{G}}$ of stable bundles over $X\times \mathbb{G},$ where $\mathbb{G}$ is the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(n-r,\mathbb{C}^n)$. In particular, we prove th…
Let C be a smooth projective curve over the field of the complex numbers. We consider Brill-Noether loci over the moduli of maps from C to the Grassmannian G(m,n) and the corresponding Quot schemes of quotients of a trivial vector bundle on C compactifying the spaces of morphisms. We study in detail the case in which m=2, n=4. We prove results on the irreducibility and dimension of these Brill-Noether loci and we address explicit formulas for their cohomology classes. We study the existence problem of these spaces which is closely related with the problem of classification of vector bundles ov…
We study the degeneracy loci of general bundle morphisms from the direct sum of m copies of the structural sheaf on $P^n$ to $Ω(2)$, also from the point of view of the classical geometrical interpretation of the sections of $Ω(2)$ as linear line complexes. We consider in particular the case of $P^5$ with m=2, 3. For n=5 and m=3 we give an explicit description of the Hilbert scheme H of elliptic normal scrolls in $P^5$, by defining a natural rational map from the Grassmannian G(2,14) to H, which results to be dominant with general fibre of degree four.
In this paper we study the relationship between two different compactifications of the space of vector bundle quotients of an arbitrary vector bundle on a curve. One is Grothendieck's Quot scheme, while the other is a moduli space of stable maps to the relative Grassmannian. We establish an essentially optimal upper bound on the dimension of the two compactifications. Based on that, we prove that for an arbitrary vector bundle, the Quot schemes of quotients of large degree are irreducible and generically smooth. We precisely describe all the vector bundles for which the same thing holds in the…
Using symmetrized Grassmannians we give an algebraic geometric presentation, in the level of classifying spaces, of the Chern character and its relation to Chern classes. This allows one to define, for any projective variety $X$, a Chern character map from the "holomorphic K-theory of X to its morphic cohomology (introduced by Friedlander and Lawson). The holomorphic K-theory of $X$, introduced by Lawson, Lima-Filho and Michelsohn and also by Friedlander and Walker, is defined in terms a group-completion of the space of algebraic morphisms from X into BU. It has been further studied by the aut…
