In \cite{baker-ozel}, by using Fredholm index we developed a version of Quillen's geometric cobordism theory for infinite dimensional Hilbert manifolds. This cobordism theory has a graded group structure under topological union operation and has push-forward maps for complex orientable Fredholm maps. In \cite{cenap-isr}, by using Quinn's Transversality Theorem \cite{Quinn}, it has been shown that this cobordism theory has a graded ring structure under transversal intersection operation and has pull-back maps for smooth maps. It has been shown that the Thom isomorphism in this theory was satisfied for finite dimensional vector bundles over separable Hilbert manifolds and the projection formula for Gysin maps has been proved. In \cite{chas}, Chas and Sullivan described an intersection product on the homology of loop space $LM$. In \cite{cohen}, R. Cohen and J. Jones described a realization of the Chas-Sullivan loop product in terms of a ring spectrum structure on the Thom spectrum of a certain virtual bundle over the loop space. In this paper, we will extend this product on cobordism and bordism theories.
In this paper we prove that for an almost complex orbifold, its virtual orbifold cohomology [math.AT/0606573] is isomorphic as algebras to the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of its cotangent orbifold.
In this paper, we focus on some models in rational homotopy theory, Sullivan model, Quillen model, C_\infty model, and L_\infty model. We give some connections between them. As an application, we prove the Torus Rank Conjecture.
Let $M$ be a 1-connected closed manifold and $LM$ be the space of free loops on $M$. In \cite{C-S} M. Chas and D. Sullivan defined a structure of BV-algebra on the singular homology of $LM$, $H_\ast(LM; \bk)$. When the field of coefficients is of characteristic zero, we prove that there exists a BV-algebra structure on $\hH^\ast(C^\ast (M); C^\ast (M))$ which carries the canonical structure of Gerstenhaber algebra. We construct then an isomorphism of BV-algebras between $\hH^\ast (C^\ast (M); C^\ast (M)) $ and the shifted $ H_{\ast+m} (LM; {\bk})$. We also prove that the Chas-Sullivan product …
Let $M$ be a closed, oriented manifold of dimension $d$. Let $LM$ be the space of smooth loops in $M$. Chas and Sullivan recently defined a product on the homology $H_*(LM)$ of degree $-d$. They then investigated other structure that this product induces, including a Batalin -Vilkovisky structure, and a Lie algebra structure on the $S^1$ equivariant homology $H_*^{S^1}(LM)$. These algebraic structures, as well as others, came under the general heading of the "string topology" of $M$. In this paper we will describe a realization of the Chas - Sullivan loop product in terms of a ring spectrum st…
The free loops space $ΛX$ of a space $X$ has become an important object of study particularly in the case when $X$ is a manifold. The study of free loop spaces is motivated in particular by two main examples. The first is their relation to geometrically distinct periodic geodesics on a manifold, originally studied by Gromoll and Meyer in $1969$. More recently the study of string topology and in particular the Chas-Sullivan loop product has been an active area of research. A complete flag manifold is the quotient of a Lie group by its maximal torus and is one of the nicer examples of a homogeneo…
A chain complex model for the free loop space of a connected, closed and oriented manifold is presented, and on its homology, the Gerstenhaber and Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structures are defined and identified with the string topology structures. The gravity algebra on the equivariant homology of the free loop space is also modeled. The construction includes non simply-connected case, and therefore gives an algebraic and chain level model of Chas-Sullivan's String Topology.
We calculate the homology of the free loop space of (n-1)-connected closed manifolds of dimension at most 3n-2 (n > 1), with the Chas-Sullivan loop product and loop bracket. Over a field of characteristic zero, we obtain an expression for the BV-operator. We also give explicit formulas for the Betti numbers, showing they grow exponentially. Our main tool is the connection between formality, coformality and Koszul algebras that was elucidated in earlier work by the first author.
Using intersection theory in the context of Hilbert manifolds and geometric homology we show how to recover the main operations of string topology built by M. Chas and D. Sullivan. We also study and build an action of the homology of reduced Sullivan's chord diagrams on the singular homology of free loop spaces, extending previous results of R. Cohen and V. Godin and unifying part of the rich algebraic structure of string topology as an algebra over the prop of these reduced diagrams. Some of these operations are extended to spaces of maps from a sphere to a compact manifold.
This note explores the interaction between cohomology operations in a generalized cohomology theory and a string topology loop coproduct dual to the Chas--Sullivan loop product. More precisely, we ask for a description for the failure of a given operation to commute with the loop coproduct, and will obtain a satisfactory answer in the case where the operation preserves both sums and products. Examples of such operations include the total Steenrod square in ordinary mod 2 cohomology and the Adams operations in K-theory.
We revisit Stasheff's construction of a minimal Lie-Quillen model of a simply-connected closed manifold $M$ using the language of infinity-algebras. This model is then used to construct a graded Lie bracket on the equivariant homology of the free loop space of $M$ minus a point similar to the Chas-Sullivan string bracket.
Let $M$ be a compact oriented $d$-dimensional smooth manifold and $X$ a topological space. Chas and Sullivan \cite{Chas-Sullivan:stringtop} have defined a structure of Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra on $\mathbb{H}_*(LM):=H_{*+d}(LM)$. Getzler \cite{Getzler:BVAlg} has defined a structure of Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra on the homology of the pointed double loop space of $X$, $H_*(Ω^2 X)$. Let $G$ be a topological monoid with a homotopy inverse. Suppose that $G$ acts on $M$. We define a structure of Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra on $H_*(Ω^2BG)\otimes\mathbb{H}_*(M)$ extending the Batalin-Vilkovisky algeb…
By using the loop orbifold of the symmetric product, we give a formula for the Poincaré polynomial of the free loop space of the Borel construction of the symmetric product. We also show that the Chas-Sullivan product structure in the homology of the free loop space of the Borel construction of the symmetric product induces a ring structure in the homology of the inertia orbifold of the symmetric product. This ring structure is compared to the one in cohomology defined through the usual field theory formalism as in the theory of Chen and Ruan.
We show the Chas-Sullivan product (on the homology of the free loop space of a Riemannian manifold) is related to the Morse index of its closed geodesics. We construct related products in the cohomology of the free loop space and of the based loop space, and show they are nontrivial.
In this paper we compute the singular homology of the space of immersions of the circle into the $n$-sphere. Equipped with Chas-Sullivan's loop product these homology groups are graded commutative algebras, we also compute these algebras. We enrich Morse spectral sequences for fibrations of free loop spaces together with loop products, this offers some new computational tools for string topology.
Chas and Sullivan have defined an intersection-type product on the homology of the free loop space LM of an oriented manifold M. In this paper we show how to extend this construction to a topological conformal field theory of degree d. In particular, we get operations on the homology of LM which are parameterized by the homology of the moduli space of open-closed Riemann surfaces.
Let M be a closed Riemannian manifold. We extend the product of Goresky-Hingston, on the cohomology of the free loop space of M relative to the constant loops, to a nonrelative product. It is graded associative and commutative, and compatible with the length filtration on the loop space, like the original product. We prove the following new geometric property of the dual homology coproduct: the nonvanishing of the k-th iterate of the coproduct on a homology class ensures the existence of a loop with a (k+1)-fold self-intersection in every representative of the class. For spheres and projective…
For M a closed, connected, oriented manifold, we obtain the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra of its string topology through homotopy-theoretic constructions on its based loop space. In particular, we show that the Hochschild cohomology of the chain algebra C_*ΩM carries a BV algebra structure isomorphic to that of the loop homology $\mathbb{H}_*(LM)$. Furthermore, this BV algebra structure is compatible with the usual cup product and Gerstenhaber bracket on Hochschild cohomology. To produce this isomorphism, we use a derived form of Poincaré duality with C_*ΩM-modules as local coefficient syste…
In this paper we study the string topology (á la Chas-Sullivan) of an orbifold. We define the string homology ring product at the level of the free loop space of the classifying space of an orbifold. We study its properties (introducing an operad to do so) and do some explicit calculations.
The loop homology of a closed orientable manifold $M$ of dimension $d$ is the ordinary homology of the free loop space $M^{S^1}$ with degrees shifted by $d$, i.e. $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1}) = H_{*+d}(M^{S^1})$. Chas and Sullivan have defined a loop product on $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ and an intersection morphism $I : \mathbb H_*(M^{S^1}) \to H_*(ΩM)$. The algebra $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ is commutative and $I$ is a morphism of algebras. In this paper we produce a model that computes the algebra $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ and the morphism $I$. We show that the kernel of $I$ is nilpotent and that the image i…
Chas and Sullivan introduced string homology, which is the equivariant homology of the loop space with the $S^1$ action on loops by rotation. Craig Westerland computed the string homology for spheres with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z} /2\mathbb{Z}$ and Somnath Basu computed the string homology and string bracket for spheres over rational coefficients and found that the bracket is trivial in his dissertation. In this paper, we compute string homology and the string bracket for spheres with integer coefficients, treating the odd- and even-dimensional cases separately. We use the Gysin sequence and…
Chas and Sullivan proved the existence of a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure in the homology of free loop spaces on closed finite dimensional smooth manifolds using chains and chain homotopies. This algebraic structure involves an associative product called the loop product, a Lie bracket called the loop bracket, and a square 0 operator called the BV operator. Cohen and Jones gave a homotopy theoretic description of the loop product in terms of spectra. In this paper, we give an explicit homotopy theoretic description of the loop bracket and, using this description, we give a homological p…
In 1999 Chas and Sullivan showed that the homology of the free loop space of an oriented manifold admits the structure of a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. In this paper we give a complete description of this Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra for complex projective spaces. This builds on a description of the ring structure that is due to Cohen, Jones and Yan. In the course of the proof we establish several new general results. These include a description of how symmetries of a manifold can be used to understand its string topology, and a relationship between characteristic classes and circle actions on s…
Chas and Sullivan showed that the homology of the free loop space LM of an oriented closed smooth finite dimensional manifold M admits the structure of a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra equipped with an associative product called the loop product and a Lie bracket called the loop bracket. We show that the cap product is compatible with the above two products in the loop homology. Namely, the cap product with cohomology classes coming from M via the circle action acts as derivations on loop products as well as on loop brackets. We show that Poisson identities and Jacobi identities hold for the …
Chas and Sullivan recently defined an intersection product on the homology $H_*(LM)$ of the space of smooth loops in a closed, oriented manifold $M$. In this paper we will use the homotopy theoretic realization of this product described by the first two authors to construct a second quadrant spectral sequence of algebras converging to the loop homology multiplicatively, when $M$ is simply connected. The $E_2$ term of this spectral sequence is $H^*(M;H_*(ΩM))$ where the product is given by the cup product on the cohomology of the manifold $H^* (M)$ with coefficients in the Pontryagin ring struc…
We apply a version of the Chas-Sullivan-Cohen-Jones product on the higher loop homology of a manifold in order to compute the homology of the spaces of continuous and holomorphic maps of the Riemann sphere into a complex projective space. This product makes sense on the homology of maps from a co-H space to a manifold, and comes from a ring spectrum. We also build a holomorphic version of the product for maps of the Riemann sphere into homogeneous spaces. In the continuous case we define a related module structure on the homology of maps from a mapping cone into a manifold, and then describe a…
In 1999 Chas and Sullivan showed that the homology of the free loop space of an oriented manifold admits the structure of a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. In this paper we give a direct description of this Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra in the case that the manifold is a compact Lie group G. Our answer is phrased in terms of the homology of G, the homology of the space of based loops on G, and the homology suspension. The result is applied to compute the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra associated to the special orthogonal groups SO(n) with coefficients in the rational numbers and in the integers modulo tw…
We show that the space of chains of smooth maps from spheres into a fixed compact oriented manifold has a natural structure of a transversal $d$-algebra. We construct a structure of transversal 1-category on the space of chains of maps from a suspension space $S(Y)$, with certain boundary restrictions, into a fixed compact oriented manifold. We define homological quantum field theories \HL and construct several examples of such structures. Our definition is based on the notions of string topology of Chas and Sullivan, and homotopy quantum field theories of Turaev.
We show that a model of chain complex of the free loop space of a $C^\infty$-manifold, which is proposed in arxiv:1404.0153, admits an action of a certain dg operad. This is a chain level structure under the Chas-Sullivan BV structure on loop space homology. Our dg operad is a variant of the cacti operad, and we introduce combinatorial objects called "decorated cacti" to define it. We also define a chain level Gerstenhaber structure on Hochschild cochains of any differential graded algebra. Applied to the dga of differential forms, this structure is compatible with our chain level structure in…
Let F_*(X, Y) be the space of base-point-preserving maps from a connected finite CW complex X to a connected space Y. Consider a CW complex of the form X cup_{alpha}e^{k+1} and a space Y whose connectivity exceeds the dimension of the adjunction space. Using a Quillen-Sullivan mixed type model for a based mapping space, we prove that, if the bracket length of the attaching map alpha: S^k --> X is greater than the Whitehead length WL(Y) of Y, then F_*(X cup_{alpha}e^{k+1}, Y) has the rational homotopy type of the product space F_*(X, Y) times Omega^{k+1}Y. This result yields that if the bracket…
In this paper we establish the existence of certain structures on the ordinary and equivariant homology of the free loop space on a manifold or, more generally, a formal Poincaré duality space. These structures; namely the loop product, the loop bracket and the string bracket, were introduced and studied by Chas and Sullivan under the general heading `string topology'. Our method is based on obstruction theory for $C_\infty$-algebras and rational homotopy theory. The resulting string topology operations are manifestly homotopy invariant.
We refine the intersection product in homology to an equivariant setting, which unifies several known constructions. As an application, we give a common generalisation of the Chas-Sullivan string product on a manifold and the Chataur-Menichi string product on the classifying space by defining a string product on the Borel construction of a manifold. We prove a vanishing result which enables us to define a secondary product. The secondary product is then used to construct secondary versions of the Chataur-Menichi string product, and the equivariant intersection product in the Borel equivariant …
Let $M$ be any simply-connected Gorenstein space over any field. Félix and Thomas have extended to simply-connected Gorenstein spaces, the loop (co)products of Chas and Sullivan on the homology of the free loop space $H_*(LM)$. We describe these loop (co)products in terms of the torsion and extension functors by developing string topology in appropriate derived categories. As a consequence, we show that the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence converging to the loop homology of a Gorenstein space admits a multiplication and a comultiplication with shifted degree which are compatible with the loop…
Let M be a closed, oriented, n -manifold, and LM its free loop space. Chas and Sullivan defined a commutative algebra structure in the homology of LM, and a Lie algebra structure in its equivariant homology. These structures are known as the string topology loop product and string bracket, respectively. In this paper we prove that these structures are homotopy invariants in the following sense. Let f : M_1 \to M_2 be a homotopy equivalence of closed, oriented n -manifolds. Then the induced equivalence, Lf : LM_1 \to LM_2 induces a ring isomorphism in homology, and an isomorphism of Lie algebra…
In 1999 Chas and Sullivan discovered that the homology H_*(LX) of the space of free loops on a closed oriented smooth manifold X has a rich algebraic structure called string topology. They proved that H_*(LX) is naturally a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra. There are several conjectures connecting the string topology BV algebra with algebraic structures on the Hochschild cohomology of algebras related to the manifold X, but none of them has been verified for manifolds of dimension n>1. In this work we study string topology in the case when X is aspherical (i.e. its homotopy groups π_i(X) vanish…
Given a closed manifold $M$. We give an algebraic model for the Chas-Sullivan product and the Goresky-Hingston coproduct. In the simply-connected case, this admits a particularly nice description in terms of a Poincaré duality model of the manifold, and involves the configuration space of two points on $M$. We moreover, construct an $IBL_\infty$-structure on (a model of) cyclic chains on the cochain algebra of $M$, such that the natural comparison map to the $S^1$-equivariant loop space homology intertwines the Lie bialgebra structure on homology. The construction of the coproduct/cobracket de…
We first review various known algebraic structures on the Hochschild (co)homology of a differential graded algebras under weak Poincar{é} duality hypothesis, such as Calabi-Yau algebras, derived Poincar{é} duality algebras and closed Frobenius algebras. This includes a BV-algebra structure on $HH^*(A,A^\vee)$ or $HH^*(A,A)$, which in the latter case is an extension of the natural Gerstenhaber structure on $HH^*(A,A)$. As an example, after proving that the chain complex of the Moore loop space of a manifold $M$ is a CY-algebra and using Burghelea-Fiedorowicz-Goodwillie theorem we obtain a BV-st…
We consider the space $ΛM:=H^1(S^1,M)$ of loops of Sobolev class $H^1$ of a compact smooth manifold $M$, the so-called free loop space of $M$. We take quotients $ΛM/G$ where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $O(2)$ acting by linear reparametrization of $S^1$. We use the existence of transfer maps $tr:H_*(ΛM/G)\rightarrow H_*(ΛM)$ to define a homology product on $ΛM/G$ via the Chas-Sullivan loop product. We call this product $P_G$ the transfer product. The involution $\vartheta:ΛM\rightarrow ΛM$ which reverses orientation, $ \vartheta\big(γ(t)\big):=γ(1-t)$, is of particular interest to us. We comput…
In his Inventiones paper, Ziller (Invent. Math: 1-22, 1977) computed the integral homology as a graded abelian group of the free loop space of compact, globally symmetric spaces of rank 1. Chas and Sullivan (String Topology, 1999)showed that the homology of the free loop space of a compact closed orientable manifold can be equipped with a loop product and a BV-operator making it a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) developed a spectral sequence which converges to the loop homology as a spectral sequence of algebra…
