The homology of a 2-colored dioperad of decorated Riemann surfaces, relevant to open-closed string field theory, is computed. The structure it describes is realized in an open-closed setting of string topology via an action at the level of topological spaces.
We show that the reduced Hochschild homology of a DG open Frobenius algebra has the natural structure of a Batalin-Vilkovisky coalgebra, and the reduced cyclic homology has the natural structure of a gravity coalgebra. This gives an algebraic model for a Batalin-Vilkovisky coalgebra structure on the reduced homology of the free loop space of a simply connected closed oriented manifold, and a gravity coalgebra structure on the reduced equivariant homology.
We study a spectral sequence that computes the (mod 2) S^1-equivariant homology of the free loop space LM of a manifold M (the "string homology" of M). Using it and knowledge of the string topology operations on the homology of LM, we compute the string homology of M when M is a sphere or a projective space.
Chas and Sullivan introduced string homology, which is the equivariant homology of the loop space with the $S^1$ action on loops by rotation. Craig Westerland computed the string homology for spheres with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z} /2\mathbb{Z}$, and in Somnath Basu's dissertation, he computes the string homology and string bracket for spheres over rational coefficients, and he finds that the bracket is trivial. In this paper, we compute string homology and the string bracket for spheres with integer coefficients, treating the odd- and even-dimensional cases separately. We use the Gysin seque…

We introduce the notion of the space of parallel strings with partially summable labels, which can be viewed as a geometrically constructed group completion of the space of particles with labels. We utilize this to construct a machinery which produces equivariant generalized homology theories from such simple and abundant data as partial monoids.
We show that the sutured Floer homology of a sutured 3-manifold of the form $(D^2 \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ can be expressed as the homology of a string-type complex, generated by certain sets of curves on $(D^2, F)$ and with a differential given by resolving crossings. We also give some generalisations of this isomorphism, computing "hat" and "infinity" versions of this string homology. In addition to giving interesting elementary facts about the algebra of curves on surfaces, these isomorphisms are inspired by, and establish further, connections between invariants from Floer homology and st…
Previously, we showed that most of the open-closed topological quantum field theory (TQFT) string operations vanish including all the higher genus TQFT operations, and we described a small list of genus zero open-closed TQFT string operations which can be nontrivial. In this paper, we consider open-closed string operations associated to open-closed cobordisms homeomorphic to discs. These operations constitute the main part of genus zero string operations, and they include the saddle string operation of two open strings interacting at their internal points. We show not only that disc string ope…
In previous work with Schoenfeld, we considered a string-type chain complex of curves on surfaces, with differential given by resolving crossings, and computed the homology of this complex for discs. In this paper we consider the corresponding "string homology" of annuli. We find this homology has a rich algebraic structure which can be described, in various senses, as fermionic. While for discs we found an isomorphism between string homology and the sutured Floer homology of a related 3-manifold, in the case of annuli we find the relationship is more complex, with string homology containing f…
Simplicial homology manifolds are proposed as an interesting class of geometric objects, more general than topological manifolds but still quite tractable, in which questions about the microstructure of space-time can be naturally formulated. Their string orientations are classified by $H^3$ with coefficients in an extension of the usual group of D-brane charges, by cobordism classes of homology three-spheres with trivial Rokhlin invariant.
Let $M$ be a closed simply connected smooth manifold. Let $\F_p$ be the finite field with $p$ elements where $p> 0$ is a prime integer. Suppose that $M$ is an $\F_p$-elliptic space in the sense of [FHT91]. We prove that if the cohomology algebra $H^*(M, \F_p)$ cannot be generated (as an algebra) by one element, then any Riemannian metric on $M$ has an infinite number of geometrically distinct closed geodesics. The starting point is a classical theorem of Gromoll and Meyer [GM69]. The proof uses string homology, in particular the spectral sequence of [CJY04], the main theorem of [McC87], and th…
Examples of non-trivial higher string topology operations have been regrettably rare in the literature. In this paper, working in the context of string topology of classifying spaces, we provide explicit calculations of a wealth of non-trivial higher string topology operations associated to a number of different Lie groups. As an application of these calculations, we obtain an abundance of interesting homology classes in the twisted homology groups of automorphism groups of free groups, the ordinary homology groups of holomorphs of free groups, and the ordinary homology groups of affine groups…
We study the string topology of a closed oriented Riemannian manifold M. We describe a compact moduli space of diagrams, and show how the cellular chain complex of this space gives algebraic operations on the singular chains of the free loop space LM of M. These operations are well-defined on the homology of a quotient of this moduli space, which has the homotopy type of a compactification of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. In particular, our action of the 0-dimensional homology of the quotient space on the homology of the free loop space of M recovers the Cohen-Godin positive boundary T…
Let M be a closed, oriented, n -manifold, and LM its free loop space. Chas and Sullivan defined a commutative algebra structure in the homology of LM, and a Lie algebra structure in its equivariant homology. These structures are known as the string topology loop product and string bracket, respectively. In this paper we prove that these structures are homotopy invariants in the following sense. Let f : M_1 \to M_2 be a homotopy equivalence of closed, oriented n -manifolds. Then the induced equivalence, Lf : LM_1 \to LM_2 induces a ring isomorphism in homology, and an isomorphism of Lie algebra…
It is a classical important problem of differential topology by Thom; for a homology class of a compact manifold, can we realize this by a closed submanifold with no boundary? This is true if the degree of the class is smaller or equal to the half of the dimension of the outer manifold under the condition that the coefficient ring is Z_2. If the degree of the class is smaller or equal to 6 or equal to k-2 or k-1 under the condition that the coefficient ring is the integer ring where k is the dimension of the manifold, then this is also true. As a specific study, for 4-dimensional closed manifo…
We refine the intersection product in homology to an equivariant setting, which unifies several known constructions. As an application, we give a common generalisation of the Chas-Sullivan string product on a manifold and the Chataur-Menichi string product on the classifying space by defining a string product on the Borel construction of a manifold. We prove a vanishing result which enables us to define a secondary product. The secondary product is then used to construct secondary versions of the Chataur-Menichi string product, and the equivariant intersection product in the Borel equivariant …
Arone and the second author showed that when the dimensions are in the stable range, the rational homology and homotopy of the high dimensional anologues of spaces of long knots can be calculated as the homology of a direct sum of finite graph-complexes that they described explicitly. They also showed that these homology and homotopy groups can be interpreted as the higher order Hochschild homology also called Hochschild-Pirashvili homology. In this paper, we generalize all these results to high dimensional analogues of spaces of string links. The methods of our paper are applicable in the ran…
Chas and Sullivan have defined an intersection-type product on the homology of the free loop space LM of an oriented manifold M. In this paper we show how to extend this construction to a topological conformal field theory of degree d. In particular, we get operations on the homology of LM which are parameterized by the homology of the moduli space of open-closed Riemann surfaces.
Let $ΛX$ be the free loop space on a simply connected finite $CW$-complex $X$ and $β_{i}(ΛX;\Bbbk)$ be the cardinality of a minimal generating set of $H^{i}(ΛX;\Bbbk)$ for $\Bbbk$ to be a commutative ring with unit. The sequence $ β_{i}(ΛX;\Bbbk) $ grows unbounded if and only if $\tilde {H}^{\ast}(X;\Bbbk)$ requires at least two algebra generators. This in particular answers to a long standing problem whether a simply connected closed smooth manifold has infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics in any Riemannian metric.
We perform Hochschild homology calculations in the algebro-geometric setting of motives. The motivic Hochschild homology coefficient ring contains torsion classes which arise from the mod-$p$ motivic Steenrod algebra and from generating functions on the natural numbers with finite non-empty support. Under the Betti realization, we recover Bökstedt's calculation of the topological Hochschild homology of finite prime fields.
The loop homology of a closed orientable manifold $M$ of dimension $d$ is the ordinary homology of the free loop space $M^{S^1}$ with degrees shifted by $d$, i.e. $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1}) = H_{*+d}(M^{S^1})$. Chas and Sullivan have defined a loop product on $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ and an intersection morphism $I : \mathbb H_*(M^{S^1}) \to H_*(ΩM)$. The algebra $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ is commutative and $I$ is a morphism of algebras. In this paper we produce a model that computes the algebra $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ and the morphism $I$. We show that the kernel of $I$ is nilpotent and that the image i…
Using intersection theory in the context of Hilbert manifolds and geometric homology we show how to recover the main operations of string topology built by M. Chas and D. Sullivan. We also study and build an action of the homology of reduced Sullivan's chord diagrams on the singular homology of free loop spaces, extending previous results of R. Cohen and V. Godin and unifying part of the rich algebraic structure of string topology as an algebra over the prop of these reduced diagrams. Some of these operations are extended to spaces of maps from a sphere to a compact manifold.
A chain complex model for the free loop space of a connected, closed and oriented manifold is presented, and on its homology, the Gerstenhaber and Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structures are defined and identified with the string topology structures. The gravity algebra on the equivariant homology of the free loop space is also modeled. The construction includes non simply-connected case, and therefore gives an algebraic and chain level model of Chas-Sullivan's String Topology.
We use methods from topological data analysis to study the topological features of certain distributions of string vacua. Topological data analysis is a multi-scale approach used to analyze the topological features of a dataset by identifying which homological characteristics persist over a long range of scales. We apply these techniques in several contexts. We analyze N=2 vacua by focusing on certain distributions of Calabi-Yau varieties and Landau-Ginzburg models. We then turn to flux compactifications and discuss how we can use topological data analysis to extract physical informations. Fin…
In 1999 Chas and Sullivan showed that the homology of the free loop space of an oriented manifold admits the structure of a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. In this paper we give a direct description of this Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra in the case that the manifold is a compact Lie group G. Our answer is phrased in terms of the homology of G, the homology of the space of based loops on G, and the homology suspension. The result is applied to compute the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra associated to the special orthogonal groups SO(n) with coefficients in the rational numbers and in the integers modulo tw…
Chas and Sullivan showed that the homology of the free loop space LM of an oriented closed smooth finite dimensional manifold M admits the structure of a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra equipped with an associative product called the loop product and a Lie bracket called the loop bracket. We show that the cap product is compatible with the above two products in the loop homology. Namely, the cap product with cohomology classes coming from M via the circle action acts as derivations on loop products as well as on loop brackets. We show that Poisson identities and Jacobi identities hold for the …
Cohen and Godin constructed positive boundary topological quantum field theory (TQFT) structure on the homology of free loop spaces of oriented closed smooth manifolds by associating a certain operations called string operations to orientable surfaces with parametrized boundaries. We show that all TQFT string operations associated to surfaces of genus at least one vanish identically. This is a simple consequence of properties of the loop coproduct which will be discussed in detail. One interesting property is that the loop coproduct is nontrivial only on the degree $d$ homology group of the co…
We apply a version of the Chas-Sullivan-Cohen-Jones product on the higher loop homology of a manifold in order to compute the homology of the spaces of continuous and holomorphic maps of the Riemann sphere into a complex projective space. This product makes sense on the homology of maps from a co-H space to a manifold, and comes from a ring spectrum. We also build a holomorphic version of the product for maps of the Riemann sphere into homogeneous spaces. In the continuous case we define a related module structure on the homology of maps from a mapping cone into a manifold, and then describe a…
In this expository paper we discuss a project regarding the string topology of a manifold, that was inspired by recent work of Moore-Segal, Costello, and Hopkins and Lurie, on "open-closed topological conformal field theories". Given a closed, oriented manifold M, we describe the "string topology category" S_M, which is enriched over chain complexes over a fixed field k. The objects of S_M are connected, closed, oriented submanifolds N of M, and the complex of morphisms between N_1 and N_2 is a chain complex homotopy equivalent to the singular chains C_*(P_{N_1, N_2}), where C_*(P_{N_1, N_2}) …
We show that in every codimension greater than one there exists a mod 2 homology class in some closed manifold (of sufficiently high dimension) which cannot be realized by an immersion of closed manifolds. The proof gives explicit obstructions (in terms of cohomology operations) for realizability of mod 2 homology classes by immersions. We also prove the corresponding result in which the word `immersion' is replaced by `map with some restricted set of multi-singularities'.
This paper is an exposition of the new subject of String Topology. We present an introduction to this exciting new area, as well as a survey of some of the latest developments, and our views about future directions of research. We begin with reviewing the seminal paper of Chas and Sullivan, which started String Topology by introducing a BV-algebra structure on the homology of a loop space of a manifold, then discuss the homotopy theoretic approach to String Topology, using the Thom-Pontrjagin construction, the cacti operad, and fat graphs. We review quantum field theories and indicate how stri…
Persistent homology computes the multiscale topology of a data set by using a sequence of discrete complexes. In this paper, we propose that persistent homology may be a useful tool for studying the structure of the landscape of string vacua. As a scaled-down version of the program, we use persistent homology to characterize distributions of Type IIB flux vacua on moduli space for three examples: the rigid Calabi-Yau, a hypersurface in weighted projective space, and the symmetric six-torus $T^6=(T^2)^3$. These examples suggest that persistence pairing and multiparameter persistence contain use…
We make calculations in graph homology which further understanding of the topology of spaces of string links, in particular calculating the Euler characteristics of finite-dimensional summands in their homology and homotopy. In doing so, we also determine the supercharacter of the symmetric group action on the positive arity components of the modular envelope of $L_\infty$.
We revisit the problem of stability of string vacua involving hyperbolic orbifolds using methods from homotopy theory and K-homology. We propose a definition of Type II string theory on such backgrounds that further carry stratified systems of fiber bundles, which generalise the more conventional orbifold and symmetric string backgrounds, together with a classification of wrapped branes by a suitable generalized homology theory. For spaces stratified fibered over hyperbolic orbifolds we use the algebraic K-theory of their fundamental groups and Quinn homology to derive criteria for brane stabi…
We show that in closed string topology and in open-closed string topology with one $D$-brane, higher genus stable string operations are trivial. This is a consequence of Harer's stability theorem and related stability results on the homology of mapping class groups of surfaces with boundaries. In fact, this vanishing result is a special case of a general result which applies to all homological conformal field theories with a property that in the associated topological quantum field theories, the string operations associated to genus one cobordisms with one or two boundaries vanish. In closed s…
The free loop space of a Lie group is homeomorphic to the product of the Lie group itself and its based loop space. We show that the coproduct on the homology of the free loop space that was introduced by Goresky and Hingston splits into the diagonal map on the group and a based coproduct on the homology of the based loop space. This result implies that the coproduct is trivial for even-dimensional Lie groups. Using results by Bott and Samelson, we show that the coproduct is trivial as well for a large family of simply connected Lie groups.
Motivated by a result from string topology, we prove a duality in topological Hochschild homology (THH). The duality relates the THH of an E_1-algebra spectrum and the THH of its derived Koszul dual algebra under certain compactness conditions. The result relies on results about module categories which may be of interest on their own. Finally, we relate this result to topological field theories and outline some future work.
$A_\infty$ categories are a mathematical structure that appears in topological field theory, string topology, and symplectic topology. This paper studies the cyclic homology of a Calabi-Yau $A_\infty$ category, and shows that it is naturally an equivariant topological conformal field theory, and in particular, contains an involutive Lie bialgebra. Applications of the theory to string topology and the Fukaya category are given; in particular, it is shown that there is a Lie bialgebra homomorphism from the cyclic cohomology of the Fukaya category of a symplectic manifold with contact type bounda…
In the paper the Čech border homology and cohomology groups of closed pairs of normal spaces are constructed and investigated. These groups give intrinsic characterizations of Čech homology and cohomology groups based on finite open coverings, homological and cohomological coefficients of cyclicity, small and large cohomological dimensions of remainders of Stone-Čech compactifications of metrizable spaces.
In this note we study the homology of configuration spaces of closed manifolds. We sharpen the eventual periodicity results of Nagpal and Cantero-Palmer, prove integral homological stability for configuration spaces of odd-dimensional manifolds and introduce a stabilization map on the homology with $Z[1/2]$-coefficients of configuration spaces of odd-dimensional manifolds.
A Riemannian or Finsler metric on a compact manifold M gives rise to a length function on the free loop space ΛM, whose critical points are the closed geodesics in the given metric. If X is a homology class on ΛM, the minimax critical level cr(X) is a critical value. Let M be a sphere of dimension >2, and fix a metric g and a coefficient field G. We prove that the limit as deg(X) goes to infinity of cr(X)/deg(X) exists. We call this limit the "global mean frequency" of M. As a consequence we derive resonance statements for closed geodesics on spheres; in particular either all homology on ΛM of…
This paper is a continuations of the project initiated in the book string topology for stacks. We construct string operations on the SO(2)-equivariant homology of the (free) loop space $L(X)$ of an oriented differentiable stack $X$ and show that $H^{SO(2)}_{*+dim(X) -2}(L(X))$ is a graded Lie algebra. In the particular case where $X$ is a 2-dimensional orbifold we give a Goldman-type description for the string bracket. To prove these results, we develop a machinery of (weak) group actions on topological stacks which should be of independent interest. We explicitly construct the quotient stack …
Virtual knots arise in the study of Gauss diagrams and Vassiliev invariants of usual knots. Virtual braids correspond naturally to virtual knots. We consider the group of virtual braids on n strings VB_n and its Burau representation, in particular we study their homological properties. We prove that the plus-construction of the classifying space of the virtual braid group on the infinite number of strings is an infinite loop space which is equivalent to a product of Q(S^0), S^1 and an infinite loop space Y. Connections with the K-functor of the integers are discussed.
To open-closed cobordism surfaces, open-closed string topology associates topological quantum field theory (TQFT) operations, namely string operations, which depend only on homeomorphism types of surfaces and which satisfy the sewing property. We show that most TQFT string operations vanish in open-closed string topology. We describe those open-closed cobordisms with vanishing string operations, and give a short list of open-closed cobordisms with possibly nontrivial string operations.
We show an Uhlenbeck type estimate for closed simply connected manifolds which provides the existence of certain exact sequences in K-area homology. This leads to the behavior of the K-area homology under surgery. Moreover, we give an index theoretic obstruction to positive scalar curvature on compact spin manifolds with boundary.

Topological data analysis has been recently applied to investigate stylistic signatures and trends in musical compositions. A useful tool in this area is Persistent Homology. In this paper, we develop a novel method to represent a weighted directed graph as a finite metric space and then use persistent homology to extract useful features. We apply this method to weighted directed graphs obtained from pitch transitions information of a given musical fragment and use these techniques to the study of stylistic trends. In particular, we are interested in using these tools to make quantitative styl…
In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of the Serre spectral sequence with respect to the algebraic structures of string topology in generalized homology theories, specificially with the Chas-Sullivan product and the corresponding coproduct and module structures. We prove compatibility for two kinds of fibre bundles: the fibre bundle $Ω^n M \to L^n M \to M$ for an $h_*$-oriented manifold $M$ and the looped fibre bundle $L^n F \to L^n E \to L^n B$ of a fibre bunde $F \to E \to B$ of $h_*$-oriented manifolds. Our method lies in the construction of Gysin morphisms of spectral sequences. We a…
We prove that if M is a closed, connected, oriented, rationally inessential manifold, then the Hofer-Zehnder capacity of the unit disk bundle of the cotangent bundle of M is finite.
