Let $S$ be a hyperbolic oriented Riemann surface of finite type. The main purpose of this paper is to show that non-trivial geometric intersection between closed curves on $S$ is detected by some symplectic submodules they naturally determine in the homology groups of the compactifications of unramified $p$-coverings of $S$, for $p\geq 2$ a fixed prime. In particular, this gives a characterization of simple closed curves on $S$ in terms of homology groups of $p$-coverings. We then define a $p$-adic Reidemeister pairing on the fundamental group of $S$ and show that the free homotopy classes of two loops have trivial geometric intersection if and only if they are orthogonal with respect to this pairing. As an application, we give a geometric argument to prove that oriented surface groups are conjugacy $p$-separable (a combinatorial proof of this fact was recentely given by Paris).
The use of homological and homotopical devices, such as Tor and André-Quillen homology, have found substantial use in characterizing commutative algebras. The primary category setting has been differentially graded algebras and modules, but recently simplicial categories have also proved to be useful settings. In this paper, we take this point of view up a notch by extending some recent uses of homological algebra in characterizing Noetherian commutative algebras to characterizing simplicial commutative algebras having finite Noetherian homotopy through the use of simplicial homotopy theory. Characterizing the structural properties of neural networks is crucial yet poorly understood, and there are no well-established similarity measures between networks. In this work, we observe that neural networks can be represented as abstract simplicial complex and analyzed using their topological 'fingerprints' via Persistent Homology (PH). We then describe a PH-based representation proposed for characterizing and measuring similarity of neural networks. We empirically show the effectiveness of this representation as a descriptor of different architectures in several datasets. This approach b…
In this article we give a survey of homology computations for moduli spaces $\mathfrak{M}_{g,1}^m$ of Riemann surfaces with genus $g\geqslant 0$, one boundary curve, and $m\geqslant 0$ punctures. While rationally and stably this question has a satisfying answer by the Madsen-Weiss theorem, the unstable homology remains notoriously complicated. We discuss calculations with integral, mod-2, and rational coefficients. Furthermore, we determine, in most cases, explicit generators using homology operations.
In the context of orientable circuits and subcomplexes of these as representing certain singular spaces, we consider characteristic class formulas generalizing those classical results as seen for the Riemann-Hurwitz formula for regulating the topology of branched covering maps and that for monoidal transformations which include the standard blowing-up process. Here the results are presented as cap product pairings, which will be elements of a suitable homology theory, rather than characteristic numbers as would be the case when taking Kronecker products once Poincaré duality is defined. We fur…

We apply persistent homology to the task of discovering and characterizing phase transitions, using lattice spin models from statistical physics for working examples. Persistence images provide a useful representation of the homological data for conducting statistical tasks. To identify the phase transitions, a simple logistic regression on these images is sufficient for the models we consider, and interpretable order parameters are then read from the weights of the regression. Magnetization, frustration and vortex-antivortex structure are identified as relevant features for characterizing pha…
We apply a version of the Chas-Sullivan-Cohen-Jones product on the higher loop homology of a manifold in order to compute the homology of the spaces of continuous and holomorphic maps of the Riemann sphere into a complex projective space. This product makes sense on the homology of maps from a co-H space to a manifold, and comes from a ring spectrum. We also build a holomorphic version of the product for maps of the Riemann sphere into homogeneous spaces. In the continuous case we define a related module structure on the homology of maps from a mapping cone into a manifold, and then describe a…
The homology of a 2-colored dioperad of decorated Riemann surfaces, relevant to open-closed string field theory, is computed. The structure it describes is realized in an open-closed setting of string topology via an action at the level of topological spaces.

Smooth and proper dg-algebras have an Euler class valued in the Hochschild homology of the algebra. This Euler class is worthy of this name since it satisfies many familiar properties including compatibility with the familiar pairing on the Hochschild homology of the algebra and that of its opposite. This compatibility is the Riemann-Roch theorems of Shklyarov and Petit. In this paper we prove a broad generalization of these Riemann-Roch theorems. We generalize from the bicategory of dg-algebras and their bimodules to monoidal bicategories and from Euler class to traces of non identity maps. O…
Given a non-compact Riemannian manifold M and a submanifold N of codimension q, we will construct under certain assumptions on both M and N a wrong way map in uniformly finite homology. Using an equivariant version of the construction and applying it to universal covers, we will construct wrong way maps in homology of groups. As applications we discuss obstructions against positive scalar curvature metrics and against inessentialness.
In this paper we study the topology of the space of Riemann surfaces in a simply connected space X, S_{g,n} (X, γ). This is the space consisting of triples, (F_{g,n}, ϕ, f), where F_{g,n} is a Riemann surface of genus g and n-boundary components, ϕis a parameterization of the boundary, and f : F_{g,n} \to X is a continuous map that satisfies a boundary condition γ. We prove three theorems about these spaces. Our main theorem is the identification of the stable homology type of the space S_{\infty, n}(X; γ), defined to be the limit as the genus g gets large, of the spaces S_{g,n} (X; γ). Our re…
Let $ΛX$ be the free loop space on a simply connected finite $CW$-complex $X$ and $β_{i}(ΛX;\Bbbk)$ be the cardinality of a minimal generating set of $H^{i}(ΛX;\Bbbk)$ for $\Bbbk$ to be a commutative ring with unit. The sequence $ β_{i}(ΛX;\Bbbk) $ grows unbounded if and only if $\tilde {H}^{\ast}(X;\Bbbk)$ requires at least two algebra generators. This in particular answers to a long standing problem whether a simply connected closed smooth manifold has infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics in any Riemannian metric.
Chas and Sullivan have defined an intersection-type product on the homology of the free loop space LM of an oriented manifold M. In this paper we show how to extend this construction to a topological conformal field theory of degree d. In particular, we get operations on the homology of LM which are parameterized by the homology of the moduli space of open-closed Riemann surfaces.
Let $M$ be a closed simply connected smooth manifold. Let $\F_p$ be the finite field with $p$ elements where $p> 0$ is a prime integer. Suppose that $M$ is an $\F_p$-elliptic space in the sense of [FHT91]. We prove that if the cohomology algebra $H^*(M, \F_p)$ cannot be generated (as an algebra) by one element, then any Riemannian metric on $M$ has an infinite number of geometrically distinct closed geodesics. The starting point is a classical theorem of Gromoll and Meyer [GM69]. The proof uses string homology, in particular the spectral sequence of [CJY04], the main theorem of [McC87], and th…
The aim of this paper is to present a few versions of the Riemann-Hurwitz formula for a regular branched covering of graphs. By a graph, we mean a finite connected multigraph. The genus of a graph is defined as the rank of the first homology group. We consider a finite group acting on a graph, possibly with fixed and invertible edges, and the respective factor graph. Then, the obtained Riemann-Hurwitz formula relates genus of the graph with genus of the factor graph and orders of the vertex and edge stabilisers.
Using the machinery of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, we construct cohomology classes on compactifications of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces from the data of a contractible differential graded Frobenius algebra. We describe how evaluating these cohomology classes upon a well-known construction producing homology classes in the moduli space can be expressed in terms of the Feynman diagram expansion of some functional integral. By computing these integrals for specific examples, we are able to demonstrate that this construction produces families of nontrivial classes.
Given a finite group G, a G-covering of closed Riemannian manifolds, and a so-called G-relation, a construction of Sunada produces a pair of manifolds M_1 and M_2 that are strongly isospectral. Such manifolds have the same dimension and the same volume, and their rational homology groups are isomorphic. We investigate the relationship between their integral homology. The Cheeger-Mueller Theorem implies that a certain product of orders of torsion homology and of regulators for M_1 agrees with that for M_2. We exhibit a connection between the torsion in the integral homology of M_1 and M_2 on th…
A Riemannian or Finsler metric on a compact manifold M gives rise to a length function on the free loop space ΛM, whose critical points are the closed geodesics in the given metric. If X is a homology class on ΛM, the minimax critical level cr(X) is a critical value. Let M be a sphere of dimension >2, and fix a metric g and a coefficient field G. We prove that the limit as deg(X) goes to infinity of cr(X)/deg(X) exists. We call this limit the "global mean frequency" of M. As a consequence we derive resonance statements for closed geodesics on spheres; in particular either all homology on ΛM of…
In this paper, we introduce and study representation homology of topological spaces, which is a natural homological extension of representation varieties of fundamental groups. We give an elementary construction of representation homology parallel to the Loday-Pirashvili construction of higher Hochschild homology; in fact, we establish a direct geometric relation between the two theories by proving that the representation homology of the suspension of a (pointed connected) space is isomorphic to its higher Hochschild homology. We also construct some natural maps and spectral sequences relating…
Let $G$ be a reductive affine algebraic group defined over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the cotangent complex of the derived $G$-representation scheme $ {\rm DRep}_G(X)$ of a pointed connected topological space $X$. We use an (algebraic version of) unstable Adams spectral sequence relating the cotangent homology of $ {\rm DRep}_G(X) $ to the representation homology $ {\rm HR}_*(X,G) := π_*{\mathcal O}[{\rm DRep}_G(X)] $ to prove some vanishing theorems for groups and geometrically interesting spaces. Our examples include virtually free groups, Riemann surfaces, l…
We study here some aspects of the topology of the space of smooth, stable, genus 0 curves in a Riemannian manifold $X$, i.e. the Kontsevich stable curves, which are not necessarily holomorphic. We use the Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder polyfold structure on this space and some natural characteristic classes, to show that for $X=BU,$ the rational homology of the spherical mapping space injects into the rational homology of the space of stable curves. We also give here a definition of what we call $q$-complete symplectic manifolds, which roughly speaking means Gromov-Witten theory captures all informatio…
