We study how solid closure in mixed characteristic behaves after taking ultraproducts. The ultraproduct will be chosen so that we land in equal characteristic, and therefore can make a comparison with tight closure. As a corollary we get an asymptotic version of the Hochster-Roberts invariant theorem in dimension three: if $R$ is a mixed characteristic (cyclically) pure 3-dimensional local subring of a regular local ring $S$, then $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay, provided the ramification of $S$ is large with respect to its dimension and residual characteristic, and with respect to the multiplicity of $R$.
We define a closure operation for ideals in a commutative ring which has all the good properties of solid closure (at least in the case of equal characteristic) but such that also every ideal in a regular ring is closed. This gives in particular a kind of tight closure theory in characteristic zero without referring to positive characteristic.
We define a closure operation for rings of mixed characteristic and verify that the closure is a ring. We then show that this closure produces a ring with good properties with respect to its Fontaine ring and give an example to show that rings that are not closed in this sense do not satisfy these properties.
Let I denote a homogeneous R_+-primary ideal in a two-dimensional normal standard-graded domain over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that a homogeneous element f belongs to the solid closure I^* if and only if e_{HK}(I) = e_{HK}((I,f)), where e_{HK} denotes the (characteristic zero) Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of an ideal. This provides a version in characteristic zero of the well-known Hilbert-Kunz criterion for tight closure in positive characteristic.
We introduce a graded version of dagger closure and prove that it coincides with solid closure for homogeneous ideals in two dimensional $\mathbb{N}$-graded domains of finite type over a field.
In this article, we generalize a previously defined set of axioms for a closure operation that induces balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules. While the original axioms were only defined in terms of finitely generated modules, these new ones will apply to all modules over a local domain. The new axioms will lead to a notion of phantom extensions for general modules, and we will prove that all modules that are phantom extensions can be modified into balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules and are also solid modules. As a corollary, if $R$ has characteristic $p>0$ and is $F$-finite, then all solid alge…
Extended plus (epf) closure and rank 1 (r1f) closure are two closure operations introduced by Raymond C. Heitmann for rings of mixed characteristic. Recently, he and Linquan Ma proved that epf closure satisfies the usual colon-capturing property under mild conditions. In this paper, we extend their result and prove that epf closure satisfies what we call the $p$-colon-capturing property. Based on that, we define a new closure notion called "weak epf closure", and prove that it satisfies the generalized colon-capturing property and some other colon-capturing properties. This gives a new proof o…
The (full) extended plus closure was developed as a replacement for tight closure in mixed characteristic rings. Here it is shown by adapting André's perfectoid algebra techniques that, for complete local rings that have F-finite residue fields, this closure has the colon-capturing property. In fact, more generally, if $R$ is a (possibly ramified) complete regular local ring of mixed characteristic that have F-finite residue fields, $I$ and $J$ are ideals of $R$, and the local domain $S$ is a finite $R$-module, then $(IS:J)\subseteq (I:J)S^{epf}$. A consequence is that all ideals in regular lo…
An $R$-algebra $S$ is $R$-solid if there exists a nonzero $R$-linear map $S \rightarrow R$. In characteristic $p$, the study of $F$-singularities such as Frobenius splittings implicitly rely on the $R$-solidity of $R^{1/p}$. Following recent results of the first two authors on the Frobenius non-splitting of certain excellent $F$-pure rings, in this paper we use the notion of solidity to systematically study the notion of excellence, with an emphasis on $F$-singularities. We show that for rings $R$ essentially of finite type over complete local rings of characteristic $p$, reducedness implies t…
We prove that the absolute integral closure $R^{+}$ of an equicharacteristic zero noetherian complete local domain $R$ is not coherent, provided $\dim(R)\geq 2$. As a corollary, we give an elementary proof of the mixed characteristic version of the result due to Asgharzadeh and extend it to dimension $3$. Furthermore, we apply the methods of Aberbach and Hochster used to prove the positive characteristic version of this result to study F-coherent rings and our work naturally suggests a mixed characteristic analogue of a result of Smith.
We prove that, modulo any power of a prime $p$, the absolute integral closure of an excellent noetherian domain is Cohen-Macaulay. A graded analog is also established, yielding variants of Kodaira vanishing "up to finite covers" in mixed characteristic. Our main tools are (log) prismatic cohomology (which yields a Frobenius action in mixed characteristic) and the $p$-adic Riemann-Hilbert functor for constructible étale $\mathbf{F}_p$-sheaves on varieties over a $p$-adic field (which almost controls perfectified prismatic cohomology).
We give short, closure-theoretic proofs for uniform bounds on the growth of symbolic powers of ideals in regular rings. The author recently proved these bounds in mixed characteristic using various versions of perfectoid/big Cohen-Macaulay test ideals, with special cases obtained earlier by Ma and Schwede. In mixed characteristic, we instead use Heitmann's full extended plus (epf) closure, Jiang's weak epf (wepf) closure, and R.G.'s results on closure operations that induce big Cohen-Macaulay algebras. Our strategy also applies to any Dietz closure satisfying R.G.'s algebra axiom and a Brianço…
This paper continues the investigation of quasilength, of content of local cohomology with respect to generators of the support ideal, and of robust algebras begun in joint work of Hochster and Huneke. We settle several questions raised by Hochster and Huneke. In particular, we give a family of examples of top local cohomology modules both in equal characteristic 0 and in positive prime characteristic that are nonzero but have content 0. We use the notion of a robust forcing algebra (the condition turns out to be strictly stronger than the notion of a solid forcing algebra in, for example, equ…
In an earlier preprint (math.AG/9810142) we gave an explicit description of the algebraic closure of the field of power series over a field of characteristic p, in terms of "generalized power series". In this paper, we give an analogous description of the algebraic closure of the fraction field of the Witt ring of a field of characteristic p, using an analogue of generalized power series in mixed characteristic due to Poonen.
Let $S$ be an unramified regular local ring of mixed characteristic $p\geq 3$ and $S^p$ the subring of $S$ obtained by lifting to $S$ the image of the Frobenius map on $S/pS$. Let $R$ be the integral closure of $S$ in a biradical extension of degree $p^2$ of its quotient field obtained by adjoining $p$-th roots of sufficiently general square free elements $f,g\in S^p$. We show that $R$ admits a birational maximal Cohen-Macaulay module. It is noted that $R$ is not automatically Cohen-Macaulay.
Let $S$ be an unramified regular local ring of mixed characteristic two and $R$ the integral closure of $S$ in a biquadratic extension of its quotient field obtained by adjoining roots of sufficiently general square free elements $f,g\in S$. Let $S^2$ denote the subring of $S$ obtained by lifting to $S$ the image of the Frobenius map on $S/2S$. When at least one of $f,g\in S^2$, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of $R$ and show that $R$ admits a birational small Cohen-Macaulay module. It is noted that $R$ is not automatically Cohen-Macaulay in case $f,g\in S^2$ or if $f,g\notin S^2$.
Tight closure test ideals have been central to the classification of singularities in rings of characteristic $p>0$, and via reduction to characteristic $p$, in equal characteristic zero as well. A summary of their properties and applications can be found in "A survey of test ideals" by Karl Schwede and Kevin Tucker. In this paper, we extend the notion of a test ideal to arbitrary closure operations, particularly those coming from big Cohen-Macaulay modules and algebras, and prove that it shares key properties of tight closure test ideals. Our main results show how these test ideals can be use…
The homological conjectures, which date back to Peskine, Szpiro and Hochster in the late sixties, make fundamental predictions about syzygies and intersection problems in commutative algebra. They were settled long ago in the presence of a base field and led to tight closure theory, a powerful tool to investigate singularities in characteristic p. Recently, perfectoid techniques coming from p-adic Hodge theory have allowed us to get rid of any base field; this solves the direct summand conjecture and establishes the existence and weak functoriality of big Cohen-Macaulay algebras, which solve i…
