The hybrid spectral problem where the field satisfies Dirichlet conditions (D) on part of the boundary of the relevant domain and Neumann (N) on the remainder is discussed in simple terms. A conjecture for the C_1 coefficient is presented and the conformal determinant on a 2-disc, where the D and N regions are semi-circles, is derived. Comments on higher coefficients are made.
A hemisphere hybrid problem is introduced that involves Robin boundary conditions and leads to logarithmic terms in the heat--kernel expansion which are evaluated explicitly.
We study Schroedinger operators with Robin boundary conditions on exterior domains in $\R^d$. We prove sharp point-wise estimates for the associated semi-groups which show, in particular, how the boundary conditions affect the time decay of the heat kernel in dimensions one and two. Applications to spectral estimates are discussed as well.
We study generalized Robin boundary conditions, Robin-to-Dirichlet maps, and Krein-type resolvent formulas for Schrödinger operators on bounded Lipschitz domains in $\bbR^n$, $n\ge 2$. We also discuss the case of bounded $C^{1,r}$-domains, $(1/2)<r<1$.
A generalization of Robin boundary conditions leading to self-adjoint operators is developed for the second derivative operator on metric graphs with compact completion and totally disconnected boundary. Harmonic functions and their properties play an essential role.
We consider a magnetic Schroedinger operator in a planar infinite strip with frequently and non-periodically alternating Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. Assuming that the homogenized boundary condition is the Dirichlet or the Robin one, we establish the uniform resolvent convergence in various operator norms and we prove the estimates for the rates of convergence. It is shown that these estimates can be improved by using special boundary correctors. In the case of periodic alternation, pure Laplacian, and the homogenized Robin boundary condition, we construct two-terms asymptotics for…
In this paper we study the best constant in a Hardy inequality for the p-Laplace operator on convex domains with Robin boundary conditions. We show, in particular, that the best constant equals $((p-1)/p)^p$ whenever Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed on a subset of the boundary of non-zero measure. We also discuss some generalizations to non-convex domains.
We consider the Laplacian in a curved two-dimensional strip of constant width squeezed between two curves, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the curves and variable Robin boundary conditions on the other. We prove that, for certain types of Robin boundary conditions, the spectral threshold of the Laplacian is estimated from below by the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in a Dirichlet-Robin annulus determined by the geometry of the strip. Moreover, we show that an appropriate combination of the geometric setting and boundary conditions leads to a Hardy-type inequality in infi…
The Laplacian in an unbounded tubular neighbourhood of a hyperplane with non-Hermitian complex-symmetric Robin-type boundary conditions is investigated in the limit when the width of the neighbourhood diminishes. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm resolvent sense to a self-adjoint Schroedinger operator in the hyperplane whose potential is expressed solely in terms of the boundary coupling function. As a consequence, we are able to explain some peculiar spectral properties of the non-Hermitian Laplacian by known results for Schroedinger operators.
We consider the Laplacian in a tubular neighbourhood of a hyperplane subjected to non-self-adjoint $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Robin boundary conditions. Its spectrum is found to be purely essential and real for constant boundary conditions. The influence of the perturbation in the boundary conditions on the threshold of the essential spectrum is studied using the Birman-Schwinger principle. Our aim is to derive a sufficient condition for existence, uniqueness and reality of discrete eigenvalues. We show that discrete spectrum exists when the perturbation acts in the mean against the unperturbed …
We give a counterexample to the long standing conjecture that the ball maximises the first eigenvalue of the Robin eigenvalue problem with negative parameter among domains of the same volume. Furthermore, we show that the conjecture holds in two dimensions provided that the boundary parameter is small. This is the first known example within the class of isoperimetric spectral problems for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian where the ball is not an optimiser.
We determine accurate asymptotics of the lowest eigenvalue for the Laplace operator with a smooth magnetic field and Robin boundary conditions in a smooth 3D domain, when the Robin parameter tends to $+\infty$. Our results identify a critical regime where the contribution of the magnetic field and the Robin condition are of the same order. In this critical regime, we derive an effective operator defined on the boundary of the domain.
For Schrödinger operators on an interval with either convex or symmetric single-well potentials, and Robin or Neumann boundary conditions, the gap between the two lowest eigenvalues is minimised when the potential is constant. We also have results for the $p$-Laplacian.
We introduce Robin boundary conditions for biharmonic operators, which are a model for elastically supported plates and are closely related to the study of spaces of traces of Sobolev functions. We study the dependence of the operator, its eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions on the Robin parameters. We show in particular that when the parameters go to plus infinity the Robin problem converges to other biharmonic problems, and obtain estimates on the rate of divergence when the parameters go to minus infinity. We also analyse the dependence of the operator on smooth perturbations of the domain, com…
In this paper we establish a Hardy inequality for Laplace operators with Robin boundary conditions. For convex domains, in particular, we show explicitly how the corresponding Hardy weight depends on the coefficient of the Robin boundary conditions. We also study several extensions to non-convex and unbounded domains.
We investigate spectral properties of a quantum particle confined to an infinite straight planar strip by imposing Robin boundary conditions with variable coupling. Assuming that the coupling function tends to a constant at infinity, we localize the essential spectrum and derive a sufficient condition which guarantees the existence of bound states. Further properties of the associated eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are studied numerically by the mode-matching technique.
In this note self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators are investigated by using the abstract technique of quasi boundary triples and their Weyl functions. The main result is an extension of Theorem 2.6 in [5] which provides sufficient conditions on the parameter in the boundary space to induce self-adjoint realizations. As an example self-adjoint Robin Laplacians on the half-space with boundary conditions involving an unbounded coefficient are considered.
On a bounded Lipschitz domain we consider two selfadjoint operator realizations of the same second order elliptic differential expression subject to Robin boundary conditions, where the coefficients in the boundary conditions are functions. We prove that inequality between these functions on the boundary implies strict inequality between the eigenvalues of the two operators, provided that the inequality of the functions in the boundary conditions is strict on an arbitrarily small nonempty, open set.
We prove a two-term asymptotic expansion of eigenvalue sums of the Laplacian on a bounded domain with Neumann, or more generally, Robin boundary conditions. We formulate and prove the asymptotics in terms of semi-classical analysis. In this reformulation it is natural to allow the function describing the boundary conditions to depend on the semi-classical parameter and we identify and analyze three different regimes for this dependence.
We consider the magnetic Robin Laplacian with a negative boundary parameter. Among a certain class of domains, we prove that the disk maximizes the ground state energy under the fixed perimeter constraint provided that the magnetic field is of moderate strength. This class of domains includes, in particular, all domains that are contained upon translations in the disk of the same perimeter and all convex centrally symmetric domains.
This is a note on a recent paper of De Simoi-Kaloshin-Wei \cite{DKW}. We show that using their results combined with wave trace invariants of Guillemin-Melrose and the heat trace invariants of Zayed for the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions, one can extend the Dirichlet/Neumann spectral rigidity results of \cite{DKW} to the case of Robin boundary conditions. We will consider the same generic subset as in \cite{DKW} of smooth strictly convex $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric planar domains sufficiently close to a circle, however we pair them with arbitrary $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric smooth Robin func…
In this paper we revisit an approach pioneered by Auchmuty to approximate solutions of the Laplace- Robin boundary value problem. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach on a large class of non-tensorial domains, in contrast with other spectral approaches for such problems. We establish a spectral approximation theorem showing an exponential fast numerical evaluation with regards to the number of Steklov eigenfunctions used, for smooth domains and smooth boundary data. A polynomial fast numerical evaluation is observed for either non-smooth domains or non-smooth boundary data. We addition…
We consider the Laplace operator in a planar waveguide, i.e., an infinite two-dimensional straight strip of constant width, with particular types of Robin boundary conditions. We study the essential spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian when the boundary coupling function has a limit at infinity. Furthermore, we derive sufficient conditions for the existence of discrete spectrum.
The operator of double differentiation on a finite interval with Robin boundary conditions perturbed by the composition of a Volterra convolution operator and the differentiation one is considered. We study the inverse problem of recovering the convolution kernel along with a coefficient of the boundary conditions from the spectrum. We prove the uniqueness theorem and that the standard asymptotics is a necessary and sufficient condition for an arbitrary sequence of complex numbers to be the spectrum of such an operator. A constructive procedure for solving the inverse problem is given.
We study the Laplacian in a smooth bounded domain, with a varying Robin boundary condition singular at one point. The associated quadratic form is not semi-bounded from below, and the corresponding Laplacian is not self-adjoint, it has the residual spectrum covering the whole complex plane. We describe its self-adjoint extensions and exhibit a physically relevant skew-symmetric one. We approximate the boundary condition, giving rise to a family of self-adjoint operators, and we describe their eigenvalues by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. These eigenvalues acquire a strange behavi…
