Recently, Krylov, Barles, and Jakobsen developed the theory for estimating errors of monotone approximation schemes for the Bellman equation (a convex Isaacs equation). In this paper we consider an extension of this theory to a class of non-convex multidimensional Isaacs equations. This is the first result of this kind for non-convex multidimensional fully non-linear problems.
To get the error bound, a key intermediate step is to introduce a penalization approximation. We conclude by (i) providing new error bounds for penalization approximations extending earlier results by e.g. Benssousan and Lions, and (ii) obtaining error bounds for approximation schemes for the penalization equation using very precise a priori bounds and a slight generalization of the recent theory of Krylov, Barles, and Jakobsen.
We study monotone P1 finite element methods on unstructured meshes for fully non-linear, degenerately parabolic Isaacs equations with isotropic diffusions arising from stochastic game theory and optimal control and show uniform convergence to the viscosity solution. Elliptic projections are used to manage singular behaviour at the boundary and to treat a violation of the consistency conditions from the framework by Barles and Souganidis by the numerical operators. Boundary conditions may be imposed in the viscosity or in the strong sense, or in a combination thereof. The presented monotone num…
In the first part of the paper, we study the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and $C^0$ interior penalty ($C^0$-IP) finite element approximation of the periodic strong solution to the fully nonlinear second-order Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman--Isaacs (HJBI) equation with coefficients satisfying the Cordes condition. We prove well-posedness and perform abstract a posteriori and a priori analyses which apply to a wide family of numerical schemes. These periodic problems arise as the corrector problems in the homogenization of HJBI equations. The second part of the paper focuses on the numerical approxima…
We provide a unified analysis of a posteriori and a priori error bounds for a broad class of discontinuous Galerkin and $C^0$-IP finite element approximations of fully nonlinear second-order elliptic Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman and Isaacs equations with Cordes coefficients. We prove the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions in $H^2$ of Isaacs equations with Cordes coefficients posed on bounded convex domains. We then show the reliability and efficiency of computable residual-based error estimators for piecewise polynomial approximations on simplicial meshes in two and three space dimensio…
The full history recursive multilevel Picard approximation method for semilinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is the only method which provably overcomes the curse of dimensionality for general time horizons if the coefficient functions and the nonlinearity are globally Lipschitz continuous and the nonlinearity is gradient-independent. In this article we extend this result to locally monotone coefficient functions. Our results cover a range of semilinear PDEs with polynomial coefficient functions.
We establish a general theory of optimal strong error estimation for numerical approximations of a second-order parabolic stochastic partial differential equation with monotone drift driven by a multiplicative infinite-dimensional Wiener process. The equation is spatially discretized by Galerkin methods and temporally discretized by drift-implicit Euler and Milstein schemes. By the monotone and Lyapunov assumptions, we use both the variational and semigroup approaches to derive a spatial Sobolev regularity under the $L_ω^p L_t^\infty \dot H^{1+γ}$-norm and a temporal Hölder regularity under th…
In this work, we develop a multifactor approximation for $d$-dimensional Stochastic Volterra Equations (SVE) with Lipschitz coefficients and kernels of completely monotone type that may be singular. First, we prove an $L^2$-estimation between two SVEs with different kernels, which provides a quantification of the error between the SVE and any multifactor Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) approximation. For the particular rough kernel case with Hurst parameter lying in $(0,1/2)$, we propose various approximating multifactor kernels, state their rates of convergence and illustrate their eff…
In 1994, Nessyahu, Tadmor and Tassa studied convergence rates of monotone finite volume approximations of conservation laws. For compactly supported, $\Lip^+$-bounded initial data they showed a first-order convergence rate in the Wasserstein distance. Our main result is to prove that this rate is optimal. We further provide numerical evidence indicating that the rate in the case of $\Lip^+$-unbounded initial data is worse than first-order.
We study the numerical approximation of stochastic evolution equations with a monotone drift driven by an infinite-dimensional Wiener process. To discretize the equation, we combine a drift-implicit two-step BDF method for the temporal discretization with an abstract Galerkin method for the spatial discretization. After proving well-posedness of the BDF2-Maruyama scheme, we establish a convergence rate of the strong error for equations under suitable Lipschitz conditions. We illustrate our theoretical results through various numerical experiments and compare the performance of the BDF2-Maruyam…
