Consider an operator equation (*) $B(u)-f=0$ in a real Hilbert space.
Let us call this equation ill-posed if the operator $B'(u)$ is not boundedly invertible, and well-posed otherwise. The DSM (dynamical systems method) for solving equation (*) consists of a construction of a Cauchy problem, which has the following properties:
1) it has a global solution for an arbitrary initial data,
2) this solution tends to a limit as time tends to infinity,
3) the limit is the minimal-norm solution to the equation $B(u)=f$.
A global convergence theorem is proved for DSM for equation (*) with monotone $C_{loc}^2$ operators $B$.
Consider an operator equation (*) $B(u)+\ep u=0$ in a real Hilbert space, where $\ep>0$ is a small constant. The DSM (dynamical systems method) for solving equation (*) consists of a construction of a Cauchy problem, which has the following properties: 1) it has a global solution for an arbitrary initial data, 2) this solution tends to a limit as time tends to infinity, 3) the limit solves the equation $B(u)=0$. Existence of the unique solution is proved by the DSM for equation (*) with monotone hemicontinuous operators $B$ defined on all of$ If $\ep=0$ and equation (**) $B(u)=0$ is solvable, …
A version of the Dynamical Systems Method for solving ill-posed nonlinear equations with monotone and locally Hölder continuous operators is studied in this paper. A discrepancy principle is proposed and justified under natural and weak assumptions. The only smoothness assumption on $F$ is the local Hölder continuity of order $α>1/2$.
In this paper we prove analogues of Korovkin's theorem in the context of weakly nonlinear and monotone operators acting on Banach lattices of functions of several variables. Our results concern the convergence almost everywhere, the convergence in measure and the convergence in $L^{p}$-norm. Several results illustrating the theory are also included.
This paper investigates first-order variable metric backward forward dynamical systems associated with monotone inclusion and convex minimization problems in real Hilbert space. The operators are chosen so that the backward-forward dynamical system is closely related to the forward-backward dynamical system and has the same computational complexity. We show existence, uniqueness, and weak asymptotic convergence of the generated trajectories and strong convergence if one of the operators is uniformly monotone. We also establish that an equilibrium point of the trajectory is globally exponential…
We investigate the convergence rates of the trajectories generated by implicit first and second order dynamical systems associated to the determination of the zeros of the sum of a maximally monotone operator and a monotone and Lipschitz continuous one in a real Hilbert space. We show that these trajectories strongly converge with exponential rate to a zero of the sum, provided the latter is strongly monotone. We derive from here convergence rates for the trajectories generated by dynamical systems associated to the minimization of the sum of a proper, convex and lower semicontinuous function …
In this work we investigate dynamical systems designed to approach the solution sets of inclusion problems involving the sum of two maximally monotone operators. Our aim is to design methods which guarantee strong convergence of trajectories towards the minimum norm solution of the underlying monotone inclusion problem. To that end, we investigate in detail the asymptotic behavior of dynamical systems perturbed by a Tikhonov regularization where either the maximally monotone operators themselves, or the vector field of the dynamical system is regularized. In both cases we prove strong converge…
In this paper we extend the coupled fixed point theorems for mixed monotone operators $F:X \times X \rightarrow X$ obtained in [T.G. Bhaskar, V. Lakshmikantham, \textit{Fixed point theorems in partially ordered metric spaces and applications}, Nonlinear Anal. TMA \textbf{65} (2006) 1379-1393] by significantly weakening the involved contractive condition. Our technique of proof is essentially different and more natural. An example as well an application to periodic BVP are also given in order to illustrate the effectiveness of our generalizations.
In this paper, new equivalence theorems for the boundedness of the composition of a quasilinear operator $T$ with the Hardy and Copson operators in weighted Lebesgue spaces are proved. The usefulness of the obtained results is illustrated in the case of weighted Hardy-type and weighted iterated Hardy-type inequalities.
Let $E = L_p, \; 1<p\leq 2,$ and $A : E \to E^*$ be a bounded monotone map such that $0 \in R(A)$. In this paper, we introduce and study an algorithm for approximating zeros of $A$. Furthermore, we study the application of this algorithm to the approximation of Hammerstein integral equations, fixed points, convex optimization, and variational inequality problems. Finally, we present numerical and illustrative examples of our results and their applications.
We study nearly equal and nearly convex sets, ranges of maximally monotone operators, and ranges and fixed points of convex combinations of firmly nonexpansive mappings. The main result states that the range of an average of firmly nonexpansive mappings is nearly equal to the average of the ranges of the mappings. A striking application of this result yields that the average of asymptotically regular firmly nonexpansive mappings is also asymptotically regular. Throughout, examples are provided to illustrate the theory. We also obtain detailed information on the domain and range of the resolven…
The notion of a firmly nonexpansive mapping is central in fixed point theory because of attractive convergence properties for iterates and the correspondence with maximal monotone operators due to Minty. In this paper, we systematically analyze the relationship between properties of firmly nonexpansive mappings and associated maximal monotone operators. Dual and self-dual properties are also identified. The results are illustrated through several examples.
We study the homogenization of a stationary random maximal monotone operator on a probability space equipped with an ergodic dynamical system. The proof relies on Fitzpatrick's variational formulation of monotone relations, on Visintin's scale integration/disintegration theory and on Tartar-Murat's compensated compactness. We provide applications to systems of PDEs with random coefficients arising in electromagnetism and in nonlinear elasticity.
We begin by considering second order dynamical systems of the from $\ddot x(t) + γ(t)\dot x(t) + λ(t)B(x(t))=0$, where $B: {\cal H}\rightarrow{\cal H}$ is a cocoercive operator defined on a real Hilbert space ${\cal H}$, $λ:[0,+\infty)\rightarrow [0,+\infty)$ is a relaxation function and $γ:[0,+\infty)\rightarrow [0,+\infty)$ a damping function, both depending on time. For the generated trajectories, we show existence and uniqueness of the generated trajectories as well as their weak asymptotic convergence to a zero of the operator $B$. The framework allows to address from similar perspectives…
The nonlinear eigen-problem $ Ax+F(x)=λx$ is studied where $A$ is an $n\times n$ irreducible Stieltjes matrix. Under certain conditions, this problem has a unique positive solution. We show that, starting from a multiple of the positive eigenvector of $A$, the Newton-like iteration for this problem converges monotonically. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of this Newton-like method.
Monotone operators are of central importance in modern optimization and nonlinear analysis. Their study has been revolutionized lately, due to the systematic use of the Fitzpatrick function. Pioneered by Penot and Svaiter, a topic of recent interest has been the representation of maximal monotone operators by so-called autoconjugate functions. Two explicit constructions were proposed, the first by Penot and Zalinescu in 2005, and another by Bauschke and Wang in 2007. The former requires a mild constraint qualification while the latter is based on the proximal average. We show that these two au…
A common theme in mathematics is to define generalized solutions to deal with problems that potentially do not have solutions. A classical example is the introduction of least squares solutions via the normal equations associated with a possibly infeasible system of linear equations. In this paper, we introduce a "normal problem" associated with finding a zero of the sum of two maximally monotone operators. If the original problem admits solutions, then the normal problem returns this same set of solutions. The normal problem may yield solutions when the original problem does not admit any; fu…
Maximally monotone operators are fundamental objects in modern optimization. The main classes of monotone operators are subdifferential operators and matrices with a positive semidefinite symmetric part. In this paper, we study a nice class of monotone operators: displacement mappings of isometries of finite order. We derive explicit formulas for resolvents, Yosida approximations, and (set-valued and MoorePenrose) inverses. We illustrate our results by considering certain rational rotators and circular shift operators.
In this paper, we deal with the existence of $ω$-periodic mild solutions for the abstract evolution equation with delay in an ordered Banach space $E$ $$u'(t)+Au(t)=F(t,u(t),u(t-τ)),\ \ \ \ t\in\R,$$ where $A:D(A)\subset E\rightarrow E$ is a closed linear operator and $-A$ generates a positive $C_{0}$-semigroup $T(t)(t\geq0)$, $F:\R\times E\times E\rightarrow E$ is a continuous mapping which is $ω$-periodic in $t$, and $τ\geq0$ is a constant. Under some weaker assumptions, we construct monotone iterative method for the delayed evolution equation periodic problems, and obtain the existence of m…
