In a 1973 paper Carl de Boor conjectured and 26 years later in 1999 Alexei Shadrin proved in full generality that the $L_\infty$-norm of the spline orthoprojector is bounded independently of the knot sequence for every order of the spline space. Following the appearance of Shadrin's proof, it was only very natural to carry the study of $L_\infty$-boundedness of the orthoprojector over to L-splines. This is a modest attempt in the direction.
We consider orthoprojectors on spaces of L-splines generated by certain second-order linear differential operators with constant coefficients. We concern ourselves with whether the $L_2$-norms of the resulting orthoprojectors are bounded independenly of the knot sequence.
For exponential splines generated by the operator $L=D^2-α^2$ we find the exact mesh-independent bound, which proves to be the same as in the corresponding polynomial case of linear splines, that is 3. For exponential splines generated by the operator $L=(D-α^2)(D+β^2)$ we prove mesh-independent boundedness without finding an explicit bound.
For trigonometric splines generated by the operator $L=D^2+α^2$ with standard constraints on the partition diameter we find a mesh-independent bound. We also consider a model example which shows that the above constraints are not necessary for mesh-independent boundedness to hold - due to an interesting "interference" phenomenon, the $L_2$-approximant remains bounded while both its coefficients and the norms of LB-splines tend to infinity.
The work examines norms in of fundamental trigonometric splines of odd and even degrees, which in some cases coincide with polynomial ones. Fundamental trigonometric splines for the case where the con-vergence factors depend on the parameter are also considered. It is shown that an important characteristic of these splines of odd and even degrees is their complete variation. The semi-norms of trigonometric splines of odd degrees are also studied. The given material is illustrated by graphs; so, in particular, an illustration of the property of the least curvature of polynomial splines is given…
We compare a recently proposed multivariate spline based on mixed partial derivatives with two other standard splines for the scattered data smoothing problem. The splines are defined as the minimiser of a penalised least squares functional. The penalties are based on partial differentiation operators, and are integrated using the finite element method. We compare three methods to two problems: to remove the mixture of Gaussian and impulsive noise from an image, and to recover a continuous function from a set of noisy observations.
We consider two-stage scattered data fitting with truncated hierarchical B-splines (THB-splines) for the adaptive reconstruction of industrial models. The first stage of the scheme is devoted to the computation of local least squares variational spline approximations, exploiting a simple fairness functional to handle data distributions with a locally varying density of points. Hierarchical spline quasi-interpolation based on THB-splines is considered in the second stage of the method to construct the adaptive spline surface approximating the whole scattered data set and a suitable strategy to …
The paper deals with two fundamental types of trigonometric polynomials and splines on uniform grids, which allow us to construct interpolation approximations that depend linearly on the values of the interpolated function. Fundamental on the same grids are trigonometric LS polynomials and LS splines, which allow us to construct the approximation of functions by the least squares method and also depend linearly on the values of the approximate function. Trigonometric splines were considered as splines with polynomial analogues in some cases. The material is illustrated in graphs. The considere…
In this paper, we propose a space-time least-squares isogeometric method to solve parabolic evolution problems, well suited for high-degree smooth splines in the space-time domain. We focus on the linear solver and its computational efficiency: thanks to the proposed formulation and to the tensor-product construction of space-time splines, we can design a preconditioner whose application requires the solution of a Sylvester-like equation, which is performed efficiently by the fast diagonalization method. The preconditioner is robust w.r.t. spline degree and mesh size. The computational time re…
In this paper, we present a nonlinear least-squares fitting algorithm using B-splines with free knots. Since its performance strongly depends on the initial estimation of the free parameters (i.e. the knots), we also propose a fast and efficient knot-prediction algorithm that utilizes numerical properties of first-order B-splines. Using $\ell_p\;(p=1,2,\infty)$ norm solutions, we also provide three different strategies for properly selecting the free knots. Our initial predictions are then iteratively refined by means of a gradient-based variable projection optimization. Our method is general …
In this contribution, we introduce a multilevel approximation method with T-splines for fitting scattered point clouds iteratively, with an application to land remote sensing. This new procedure provides a local surface approximation by an explicit computation of the control points and is called a multilevel T-splines approximation (MTA). It is computationally efficient compared with the traditional global least-squares (LS) approach, which may fail when there is an unfavourable point density from a given refinement level. We validate our approach within a simulated framework and apply it to t…
In [1], the author considered the problem of the optimal approximation of symmetric surfaces by biquadratic Bézier patches. Unfortunately, the results therein are incorrect, which is shown in this paper by considering the optimal approximation of spherical squares. A detailed analysis and a numerical algorithm are given, providing the best approximant according to the (simplified) radial error, which differs from the one obtained in [1]. The sphere is then approximated by the continuous spline of two and six tensor product quadratic Bézier patches. It is further shown that the $G^1$ smooth spl…
A spline chaos expansion, referred to as SCE, is introduced for uncertainty quantification analysis. The expansion provides a means for representing an output random variable of interest with respect to multivariate orthonormal basis splines (B-splines) in input random variables. The multivariate B-splines are built from a whitening transformation to generate univariate orthonormal B-splines in each coordinate direction, followed by a tensor-product structure to produce the multivariate version. SCE, as it stems from compactly supported B-splines, tackles locally prominent responses more effec…
A new closed formula for the first order perturbation estimate of the mixed least squares-total least squares (MTLS) solution is presented. It is mathematically equivalent to the one by Zheng and Yang(Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 2019; 26(4):e2239). With this formula, general and structured normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers of the MTLS problem are derived. Perturbation bounds based on the normwise condition number, and compact forms for the upper bounds of mixed and componentwise condition numbers are also given in order for economic storage and efficient computation. It is sh…
This paper studies adaptive least-squares finite element methods for convection-dominated diffusion-reaction problems. The least-squares methods are based on the first-order system of the primal and dual variables with various ways of imposing outflow boundary conditions. The coercivity of the homogeneous least-squares functionals are established, and the a priori error estimates of the least-squares methods are obtained in a norm that incorporates the streamline derivative. All methods have the same convergence rate provided that meshes in the layer regions are fine enough. To increase comput…
Least-Squares versus Partial Least-Squares Finite Element Methods: Robust A Priori and A Posteriori Error Estimates of Augmented Mixed Finite Element Methods
Total least squares (TLS) methods have been widely used in data fitting. Compared with the least squares method, for TLS problem we takes into account not only the observation errors, but also the errors in the measurement matrix. This is more realistic in practical applications. For the large-scale discrete ill-posed problem $Ax \approx b$, we introduce the quantum-inspired techniques to approximate the truncated total least squares (TTLS) solution. We analyze the accuracy of the quantum-inspired truncated total least squares algorithm and perform numerical experiments to demonstrate the effi…
Given a sequence of Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities in $L_2$ on a usual compact space $\mathcal M$, Gröchenig introduced the weighted least squares polynomials and the least squares quadrature from pointwise samples of a function, and obtained approximation theorems and quadrature errors. In this paper we obtain approximation theorems and quadrature errors on the sphere which are optimal. We also give upper bounds of the operator norms of the weighted least squares operators.
This work presents study on regularized and non-regularized versions of perceptron learning and least squares algorithms for classification problems. Fr'echet derivatives for regularized least squares and perceptron learning algorithms are derived. Different Tikhonov's regularization techniques for choosing the regularization parameter are discussed. Decision boundaries obtained by non-regularized algorithms to classify simulated and experimental data sets are analyzed.
We define and analyse a least-squares finite element method for a first-order reformulation of a scaled Brinkman model of fluid flow through porous media. We introduce a pseudostress variable that allows to eliminate the pressure variable from the system. It can be recovered by a simple post-processing. It is shown that the least-squares functional is uniformly equivalent, i.e., independent of the singular perturbation parameter, to a parameter dependent norm. This norm equivalence implies that the least-squares functional evaluated in the discrete solution provides an efficient and reliable a…
In this article, we address the solution of advection-dominated flow problems by stabilised methods, by means of least-squares computed stabilised coefficients. As main methodological tool, we introduce a data-driven off-line/on-line strategy to compute them with low computational cost. We compare the errors provided by the least-squares stabilised coefficients to those provided by several previously established stabilised coefficients within the solution of advection-diffusion and Navier-Stokes flows, on structured and un-structured grids, with and Lagrange Finite Elements up to third degree …
The alternating least squares algorithm for CP and Tucker decomposition is dominated in cost by the tensor contractions necessary to set up the quadratic optimization subproblems. We introduce a novel family of algorithms that uses perturbative corrections to the subproblems rather than recomputing the tensor contractions. This approximation is accurate when the factor matrices are changing little across iterations, which occurs when alternating least squares approaches convergence. We provide a theoretical analysis to bound the approximation error. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that t…
This study debuts a new spline dimensional decomposition (SDD) for uncertainty quantification analysis of high-dimensional functions, including those endowed with high nonlinearity and nonsmoothness, if they exist, in a proficient manner. The decomposition creates an hierarchical expansion for an output random variable of interest with respect to measure-consistent orthonormalized basis splines (B-splines) in independent input random variables. A dimensionwise decomposition of a spline space into orthogonal subspaces, each spanned by a reduced set of such orthonormal splines, results in SDD. E…
Stretched Gaussian distribution is the fundamental solution of the Hausdorff derivative diffusion equation and its corresponding stretched Gaussian noise is a widely encountered non-Gaussian noise in science and engineering. The least square method is a standard regression approach to fit Gaussian noisy data, but has distinct limits for non-Gaussian noise. Based on the Hausdorff calculus, this study develops a stretched least square method to fit stretched Gaussian noise by using the Hausdorff fractal distance as the horizontal coordinate. To better compare with the least square method, differ…
In this paper we formulate and solve a robust least squares problem for a system of linear equations subject to quantization error in the data matrix. Ordinary least squares fails to consider uncertainty in the operator, modeling all noise in the observed signal. Total least squares accounts for uncertainty in the data matrix, but necessarily increases the condition number of the operator compared to ordinary least squares. Tikhonov regularization or ridge regression is frequently employed to combat ill-conditioning, but requires parameter tuning which presents a host of challenges and places …
