In 1989 Happel conjectured that for a finite-dimensional algebra $A$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, $\gl A< \infty$ if and only if $\hch A < \infty$. Recently Buchweitz-Green-Madsen-Solberg gave a counterexample to Happel's conjecture. They found a family of pathological algebra $A_q$ for which $\gl A_q = \infty$ but $\hch A_q=2$. These algebras are pathological in many aspects, however their Hochschild homology behaviors are not pathological any more, indeed one has $\hh A_q = \infty=\gl A_q$. This suggests to pose a seemingly more reasonable conjecture by replacing Hochschild cohomology dimension in Happel's conjecture with Hochschild homology dimension: $\gl A < \infty$ if and only if $\hh A < \infty$ if and only if $\hh A = 0$. The conjecture holds for commutative algebras and monomial algebras. In case $A$ is a truncated quiver algebras these conditions are equivalent to the quiver of $A$ has no oriented cycles. Moreover, an algorithm for computing the Hochschild homology of any monomial algebra is provided. Thus the cyclic homology of any monomial algebra can be read off in case the underlying field is characteristic 0.
The minimal projective bimodule resolutions of the exterior algebras are explicitly constructed. They are applied to calculate the Hochschild (co)homology of the exterior algebras. Thus the cyclic homology of the exterior algebras can be calculated in case the underlying field is of characteristic zero. Moreover, the Hochschild cohomology rings of the exterior algebras are determined by generators and relations.
For a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ and for a finite dimensional symmetric $k$-algebra $A$ Külshammer studied a sequence of ideals of the centre of $A$ using the $p$-power map on degree 0 Hochschild homology. In joint work with Bessenrodt and Holm we removed the condition to be symmetric by passing through the trivial extension algebra. If $A$ is symmetric then the dual to the Külshammer ideal structure was generalised to higher Hochschild homology in earlier work. In the present paper we follow this program and propose an analogue of the dual to the Külshammer ideal structure on t…
It is shown that a bounded quiver algebra having a 2-truncated oriented cycle is of infinite Hochschild homology dimension and global dimension, which generalizes a result of Solotar and Vigué-Poirrier to nonlocal ungraded algebras having a 2-truncated oriented cycle of arbitrary length. Therefore, a bounded quiver algebra of finite global dimension has no 2-truncated oriented cycles. Note that the well-known "no loops conjecture", which has been proved to be true already, says that a bounded quiver algebra of finite global dimension has no loops, i.e., truncated oriented cycles of length 1. M…
We describe how the Hochschild (co)homology of a bound quiver algebra changes when adding or deleting arrows to the quiver. The main tools are relative Hochschild (co)homology, the Jacobi-Zariski long exact sequence obtained by A. Kaygun and a one step relative projective resolution of a tensor algebra.
We define a version of Hochschild homology and cohomology suitable for a class of algebras admitting compatible actions of bialgebras, called module algebras. We show this (co)homology, called Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology, can also be defined as a derived functor on the category of representations of a crossed product algebra. We investigate the relationship of our theory with Hopf cyclic cohomology and also prove Morita invariance of the Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology.
We study Tate-Hochschild homology and cohomology for a two-sided Noetherian Gorenstein algebra. These (co)homology groups are defined for all degrees, non-negative as well as negative, and they agree with the usual Hochschild (co)homology groups for all degrees larger than the injective dimension of the algebra. We prove certain duality theorems relating the Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups in positive degree to those in negative degree, in the case where the algebra is Frobenius. We explicitly compute all Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups for certain classes of Frobenius algebras, namely…
In this paper we study properties of the secondary Hochschild homology of the triple $(A,B,\varepsilon)$ with coefficients in $M$. We establish a type of Morita equivalence between two triples and show that $H_\bullet((A,B,\varepsilon);M)$ is invariant under this equivalence. We also prove the existence of an exact sequence which connects the usual and the secondary Hochschild homologies in low dimension, allowing one to perform easy computations. The functoriality of $H_\bullet((A,B,\varepsilon);M)$ is also discussed.
Hochschild (co)homology and Pirashvili's higher order Hochschild (co)homology are useful tools for a variety of applications including deformations of algebras. When working with higher order Hochschild (co)homology, we can consider the (co)homology of any commutative algebra with symmetric coefficient bimodules, however traditional Hochschild (co)homology is able to be computed for any associative algebra with not necessarily symmetric coefficient bimodules. In a previous paper, the author generalized higher order Hochschild cohomology for multimodule coefficients (which need not be symmetric…
In this paper we study a generalization of Kähler differentials, which correspond to the secondary Hochschild homology associated to a triple $(A,B,\varepsilon)$. We establish computations in low dimension, while also showing how this connects with the kernel of a multiplication map.
We show that for many semi-hyperbolic groups the decomposition into conjugacy classes of the Hochschild homology of the l^1-rapid decay group algebra is injective.
We prove that for certain classes of graded algebras (Koszul, local, cellular), infinite global dimension implies that Hochschild homology does not vanish in high degrees, provided the characteristic of the ground field is zero. Our proof uses Igusa's formula relating the Euler characteristic of relative cyclic homology to the graded Cartan determinant.
Let $A$ be a commutative algebra over $\mathbb C$. Given a pointed simplicial finite set $Y$ and $q\in \mathbb C$ a primitive $N$-th root of unity, we define the $q$-Hochschild homology groups of $A$ of order $Y$. When $D$ is a derivation on $A$, we construct the corresponding Lie derivative on these groups. We also define the Lie derivative for a higher derivation $\{D_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ on $A$. Finally, we describe the morphisms induced on the bivariant $q$-Hochschild cohomology groups of order $Y$ by a derivation $D$ on $A$.
We prove that two quasi-isomorphic simply connected differential graded associative Frobenius algebras have isomorphic Goresky-Hingston algebras on their reduced Hochschild homology. Our proof is based on relating the Goresky-Hingston algebra on reduced Hochschild homology to the singular Hochschild cohomology algebra. For any simply connected oriented closed manifold $M$ of dimension $k$, the Goresky-Hingston algebra on reduced Hochschild homology induces an algebra structure of degree $k-1$ on $\bar{H}^*(LM;\mathbb{Q})$, the reduced rational cohomology of the free loop space of $M$. As a con…
In this article we prove derived invariance of Hochschild-Mitchell homology and cohomology and we extend to $k$-linear categories a result by Barot and Lenzing concerning derived equivalences and one-point extensions. We also prove the existence of a Happel long exact sequence and we give a generalization of this result which provides an alternative approach.
In this paper we investigate the simplicial structure of a chain complex associated to the higher order Hochschild homology over the $3$-sphere. We also introduce the tertiary Hochschild homology corresponding to a quintuple $(A,B,C,\varepsilon,θ)$, which becomes natural after we organize the elements in a convenient manner. We establish these results by way of a bar-like resolution in the context of simplicial modules. Finally, we generalize the higher order Hochschild homology over a trio of simplicial sets, which also grants natural geometric realizations.
We study the homological algebra of bimodules over involutive associative algebras. We show that Braun's definition of involutive Hochschild cohomology in terms of the complex of involution-preserving derivations is indeed computing a derived functor: the Z/2-invariants intersected with the center. We then introduce the corresponding involutive Hochschild homology theory and describe it as the derived functor of the pushout of Z/2-coinvariants and abelianization.
We present an elementary and self-contained construction of $A_\infty$-algebras, $A_\infty$-bimodules and their Hochschild homology and cohomology groups. In addition, we discuss the cup product in Hochschild cohomology and the spectral sequence of the length filtration of a Hochschild chain complex. $A_\infty$-structures arise naturally in the study of based loop spaces and the geometry of manifolds, in particular in Lagrangian Floer theory and Morse homology. In several geometric situations, Hochschild homology may be used to describe homology groups of free loop spaces. The objective of thi…
Let A a k-algebra, H a Hopf algebra, E = A#H a general crossed product and M an E-bimodule. We obtain a complex simpler than the canonical one, giving the Hochschild homology of E with coefficients in M. This complex is eqquiped with a natural filtration. We prove that the associated spectral sequence coincides with that obtained by either, the Hochschild-Serre direct method or the Cartan-Leray-Grothendieck method. We also get similar results for the cohomology.
Let $G$ be a group acting on a small category $\mathcal C$ over a field $k$, that is $\mathcal C$ is a $G$-$k$-category. We first obtain that $\mathcal C$ is resolvable by a category which is $G$-$k$-equivalent to it, on which $G$ acts freely on objects. This resolvent category enables to show that if the coinvariants and the invariants functors are exact, then the coinvariants and invariants of the Hochschild-Mitchell (co)homology of $\mathcal C$ are isomorphic to the trivial component of the Hochschild-Mitchell (co)ho\-mo\-logy of the skew category $\mathcal C[G]$. Otherwise the correspondin…
We show that the standard quantized coordinate ring A of quantum SL(N) satisfies van den Bergh's analogue of Poincare duality for Hochschild (co)homology with dualizing bimodule being A_sigma, the A-bimodule which is A as k-vector space with right multiplication twisted by the modular automorphism sigma of the Haar functional. This implies that H_{N^2-1} (A, A_sigma)=k, generalizing our previous results for quantum SL(2).
We study the twisted Hochschild homology of quantum full flag manifolds, with the twist being the modular automorphism of the Haar state. We show that non-trivial 2-cycles can be constructed from appropriate invariant projections. The main result is that $HH_2^θ(\mathbb{C}_q[G / T])$ is infinite-dimensional when $\mathrm{rank}(\mathfrak{g}) > 1$. We also discuss the case of generalized flag manifolds and present the example of quantum Grassmannians.
Let $B$ be a commutative algebra and $A$ be a $B$-algebra (determined by an algebra homomorphism $\varepsilon:B\rightarrow A$). M. D. Staic introduced a Hochschild like cohomology $H^{\bullet}((A,B,\varepsilon);A)$ called secondary Hochschild cohomology, to describe the non-trivial $B$-algebra deformations of $A$. J. Laubacher et al later obtained a natural construction of a new chain (and cochain) complex $\overline{C}_{\bullet}(A,B,\varepsilon)$ (resp. $\overline{C}^{\bullet}(A,B,\varepsilon)$) in the process of introducing the secondary cyclic (co)homology. It turns out that unlike the clas…
In 'Hochschild (co)homology of exterior algebras' (Han, Xu, 2007), the authors computed the additive and multiplicative structure of $H\!H^\ast\!(A;\!A)$, where $A$ is the $n$-th exterior algebra over a field. In this paper, we derive all their results using a different method (AMT), as well as calculate the additive structure of $H\!H_k\!(A;\!A)$ and $H\!H^k\!(A;\!A)$ over $\mathbb{Z}$. We provide concise presentations of algebras $H\!H_\ast\!(A;\!A)$ and $H\!H^\ast\!(A;\!A)$, as well as determine their generators in the Hochschild complex. Lastly, we compute an explicit free resolution (span…
Within the framework of deformation quantization, a first step towards the study of star-products is the calculation of Hochschild cohomology. The aim of this article is precisely to determine the Hochschild homology and cohomology in two cases of algebraic varieties. On the one hand, we consider singular curves of the plane; here we recover, in a different way, a result proved by Fronsdal and make it more precise. On the other hand, we are interested in Klein surfaces. The use of a complex suggested by Kontsevich and the help of Groebner bases allow us to solve the problem.
