We present the asymptotic distribution theory for a class of increment-based estimators of the fractal dimension of a random field of the form g{X(t)}, where g:R\to R is an unknown smooth function and X(t) is a real-valued stationary Gaussian field on R^d, d=1 or 2, whose covariance function obeys a power law at the origin. The relevant theoretical framework here is ``fixed domain'' (or ``infill'') asymptotics. Surprisingly, the limit theory in this non-Gaussian case is somewhat richer than in the Gaussian case (the latter is recovered when g is affine), in part because estimators of the type considered may have an asymptotic variance which is random in the limit. Broadly, when g is smooth and nonaffine, three types of limit distributions can arise, types (i), (ii) and (iii), say. Each type can be represented as a random integral. More specifically, type (i) can be represented as the integral of a certain random function with respect to Lebesgue measure; type (ii) can be represented as the integral of a second random function
The first purpose of this article is to obtain a.s. asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator in the autoregressive process driven by a stationary Gaussian noise. The second purpose is to show the local asymptotic normality property of the likelihoods ratio in order to get a notion of asymptotic efficiency and to build an asymptotically uniformly invariant most powerful procedure for testing the significance of the autoregressive parameter.
This paper deals with the maximum likelihood estimator for the mean-reverting parameter of a first order autoregressive models with exogenous variables, which are stationary Gaussian noises (Colored noise). Using the method of the Laplace transform, both the asymptotic properties and the asymptotic design problem of the maximum likelihood estimator are investigated. The numerical simulation results confirm the theoretical analysis and show that the proposed maximum likelihood estimator performs well in finite sample.
We study the problem of nonparametric estimation of the fractional derivative of unknown spectral function of Gaussian stationary sequence (time series) and show that these problems is well posed with the classical speed of convergence when the order of derivative is less than 0.5. We prove also the asymptotical unbiaseness and normality of offered estimates with optimal speed of convergence. For the construction of the confidence region in some functional norm we establish the Central Limit Theorem in correspondent space of continuous functions for offered estimates.
We consider the class of all stationary Gaussian process with explicit parametric spectral density. Under some conditions on the autocovariance function, we defined a GMM estimator that satisfies consistency and asymptotic normality, using the Breuer-Major theorem and previous results on ergodicity. This result is applied to the joint estimation of the three parameters of a stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (fOU) process driven by a fractional Brownian motion. The asymptotic normality of its GMM estimator applies for any H in (0,1) and under some restrictions on the remaining parameters. A numeric…
Multivariate (or vector-valued) processes are important for modeling multiple variables. The fractal indices of the components of the underlying multivariate process play a key role in characterizing the dependence structures and statistical properties of the multivariate process. In this paper, under the infill asymptotics framework, we establish joint asymptotic results for the increment-based estimators of bivariate fractal indices. Our main results quantitatively describe the effect of the cross-dependence structure on the performance of the estimators.
We study a well-known estimator of the fractal index of a stochastic process. Our framework is very general and encompasses many models of interest; we show how to extend the theory of the estimator to a large class of non-Gaussian processes. Particular focus is on clarity and ease of implementation of the estimator and the associated asymptotic results, making it easy for practitioners to apply the methods. We additionally show how measurement noise in the observations will bias the estimator, potentially resulting in the practitioner erroneously finding evidence of fractal characteristics in…

We propose a novel stochastic network model, called Fractal Gaussian Network (FGN), that embodies well-defined and analytically tractable fractal structures. Such fractal structures have been empirically observed in diverse applications. FGNs interpolate continuously between the popular purely random geometric graphs (a.k.a. the Poisson Boolean network), and random graphs with increasingly fractal behavior. In fact, they form a parametric family of sparse random geometric graphs that are parametrized by a fractality parameter which governs the strength of the fractal structure. FGNs are driven…
This article proposes a new filtering model for stationary Gaussian Markov statistical experiments, given by diffusion-type difference stochastic equations.
We study rates of convergence in central limit theorems for partial sum of functionals of general stationary and non-stationary Gaussian sequences, using optimal tools from analysis on Wiener space. We apply our result to study drift parameter estimation problems for some stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion with fixed-time-step observations.
This paper is concerned with the study of the embedding circulant matrix method to simulate stationary complex-valued Gaussian sequences. The method is, in particular, shown to be well-suited to generate circularly-symmetric stationary Gaussian processes. We provide simple conditions on the complex co-variance function ensuring the theoretical validity of the minimal embedding circulant matrix method. We show that these conditions are satisfied by many examples and illustrate the algorithm. In particular, we present a simulation study involving the circularly-symmetric fractional Brownian moti…
A four-parameter family of covariance functions for stationary Gaussian processes is presented. We call it 2Dsys. It corresponds to the general solution of an autonomous second-order linear stochastic differential equation, thus arises naturally from modelling. It covers underdamped and overdamped systems, so it is proposed to use this family when one wishes to decide if a time-series corresponds to stochastically forced damped oscillations or a stochastically forced overdamped system.
This paper proposes feasible asymptotically efficient estimators for a certain class of Gaussian noises with self-similar and stationary properties, which includes the fractional Gaussian noise, under high frequency observations. In this setting, the optimal rate of estimation depends on whether either the Hurst or diffusion parameters is known or not. This is due to the singularity of the asymptotic Fisher information matrix for simultaneous estimation of the above two parameters. One of our key ideas is to extend the Whittle estimation method to the situation of high frequency observations. …
In this paper, we study central and non-central limit theorems for partial sum of functionals of general stationary Gaussian fields. We apply our result to study drift parameter estimation problems for some stochastic differential equations related to stationary Gaussian processes.
This paper introduces the $3^{rd}$-order Spectral Representation Method for simulation of non-stationary and non-Gaussian stochastic processes. The proposed method extends the classical $2^{nd}$-order Spectral Representation Method to expand the stochastic process from an evolutionary bispectrum and an evolutionary power spectrum, thus matching the process completely up to third-order. A Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) approach is further proposed to enable an efficient FFT-based implementation that reduces computational cost significantly. Two examples are presented, including the simul…
Various nonparametric approaches for Bayesian spectral density estimation of stationary time series have been suggested in the literature, mostly based on the Whittle likelihood approximation. A generalization of this approximation has been proposed in Kirch et al. who prove posterior consistency for spectral density estimation in combination with the Bernstein-Dirichlet process prior for Gaussian time series. In this paper, we will extend the posterior consistency result to non-Gaussian time series by employing a general consistency theorem of Shalizi for dependent data and misspecified model…
This chapter presents some novel information theoretic results for the analysis of stationary time series in the frequency domain. In particular, the spectral distribution that corresponds to the most uncertain or unpredictable time series with some values of the autocovariance function fixed, is the generalized von Mises spectral distribution. It is thus a maximum entropy spectral distribution and the corresponding stationary time series is called the generalized von Mises time series. The generalized von Mises distribution is used in directional statistics for modelling planar directions tha…
In this paper we derive Piterbarg's max-discretisation theorem for two different grids considering centered stationary vector Gaussian processes. So far in the literature results in this direction have been derived for the joint distribution of the maximum of Gaussian processes over $[0,T]$ and over a grid $ \mathfrak{R}(δ_1(T))=\{kδ_1(T): k=0,1,\cdots\}$. In this paper we extend recent findings by considering additionally the \bE{maximum} over another grid $ \mathfrak{R}(δ_2(T))$. We derive the joint limiting distribution of maximum of stationary Gaussian vector processes for different choice…
Minimax detection of Gaussian stochastic sequences (signals) with unknown covariance matrices is studied. For a fixed false alarm probability (1-st kind error probability), the performance of the minimax detection is being characterized by the best exponential decay rate of the miss probability (2-nd kind error probability) as the length of the observation interval tends to infinity. Our goal is to find the largest set of covariance matrices such that the minimax robust testing of this set (composite hypothesis) can be replaced with testing of only one specific covariance matrix (simple hypoth…
