In this paper we prove in certain n-dimensional normed spaces X the existence of full-dimensional equilateral simplices of large size inscribed to the unit ball B. This extends the construction of Makeev [Mak] in dimension 4 and we also compute an example of a space in which the idea cannot be applied.
An equilateral dimension of a normed space is a maximal number of pairwise equidistant points of this space. The aim of this paper is to study the equilateral dimension of certain classes of finite dimensional normed spaces. The well-known conjecture states that the equilateral dimension of any $n$-dimensional normed space is not less than $n+1$. By using an elementary continuity argument, we establish it in the following classes of spaces: permutation-invariant spaces, Orlicz-Musielak spaces and in one codimensional subspaces of $\ell^n_{\infty}$. For smooth and symmetric spaces, Orlicz-Musie…
We show that if the Banach-Mazur distance between an n-dimensional normed space X and ell infinity is at most 3/2, then there exist n+1 equidistant points in X. By a well-known result of Alon and Milman, this implies that an arbitrary n-dimensional normed space admits at least e^{c sqrt(log n)} equidistant points, where c>0 is an absolute constant. We also show that there exist n equidistant points in spaces sufficiently close to n-dimensional ell p (1 < p < infinity).
The main goal of this paper is to provide an alternative proof of the following theorem of Petty: in the normed space of dimension at least three, every 3-element equilateral set can be extended to a 4-element equilateral set. Our approach is based on the result of Kramer and Németh about inscribing a simplex into a convex body. To prove the theorem of Petty, we shall also establish that for every 3 points in the normed plane, forming an equilateral set of the common distance $p$, there exists a fourth point, which is equidistant to the given points with the distance not larger than $p$. We wi…

We show that every Banach space $X$ containing an isomorphic copy of $c_0$ has an infinite equilateral set and also that if $X$ has a bounded biorthogonal system of size $α$ then it can be renormed so as to admit an equilateral set of equal size. If $K$ is any compact non metrizable space, then under a certain combinatorial condition on $K$ the Banach space $C(K)$ has an uncountable equilateral set.
A subset of a normed space $X$ is called equilateral if the distance between any two points is the same. Let $m(X)$ be the smallest possible size of an equilateral subset of $X$ maximal with respect to inclusion. We first observe that Petty's construction of a $d$-dimensional $X$ of any finite dimension $d\geq 4$ with $m(X)=4$ can be generalised to give $m(X\oplus_1\mathbb{R})=4$ for any $X$ of dimension at least 2 which has a smooth point on its unit sphere. By a construction involving Hadamard matrices we then show that for any set $Γ$, $m(\ell_p(Γ))$ is finite and bounded above by a functio…
For fixed $k$ we prove exponential lower bounds on the equilateral number of subspaces of $\ell_{\infty}^n$ of codimension $k$. In particular, we show that if the unit ball of a normed space of dimension $n$ is a centrally symmetric polytope with at most $\frac{4n}{3}-o(n)$ pairs of facets, then it has an equilateral set of cardinality at least $n+1$. These include subspaces of codimension $2$ of $\ell_{\infty}^{n+2}$ for $n\geq 9$ and of codimension $3$ of $\ell_{\infty}^{n+3}$ for $n\geq 15$.

A well-known theorem of Schütte (1963) gives a sharp lower bound for the ratio between the maximum distance and minimum distance between n+2 points in n-dimensional Euclidean space. In this brief note we adapt Bárány's elegant proof of this theorem to the space $\ell_4^n$. This gives a new proof that the largest cardinality of an equilateral set in $\ell_4^n$ is n+1, and gives a constructive bound for an interval $(4-ε_n,4+ε_n)$ of values of p close to 4 for which it is guaranteed that the largest cardinality of an equilateral set in $\ell_p^n$ is n+1.
We survey problems and results from combinatorial geometry in normed spaces, concentrating on problems that involve distances. These include various properties of unit-distance graphs, minimum-distance graphs, diameter graphs, as well as minimum spanning trees and Steiner minimum trees. In particular, we discuss translative kissing (or Hadwiger) numbers, equilateral sets, and the Borsuk problem in normed spaces. We show how to use the angular measure of Peter Brass to prove various statements about Hadwiger and blocking numbers of convex bodies in the plane, including some new results. We also…
Let X be a normed space. A subset A of X is approximately convex if $d(ta+(1-t)b,A) \le 1$ for all $a,b \in A$ and $t \in [0,1]$ where $d(x,A)$ is the distance of $x$ to $A$. Let $\Co(A)$ be the convex hull and $\diam(A)$ the diameter of $A$. We prove that every $n$-dimensional normed space contains approximately convex sets $A$ with $\mathcal{H}(A,\Co(A))\ge \log_2n-1$ and $\diam(A) \le C\sqrt n(\ln n)^2$, where $\mathcal{H}$ denotes the Hausdorff distance. These estimates are reasonably sharp. For every $D>0$, we construct worst possible approximately convex sets in $C[0,1]$ such that $\math…
R. B. Kusner [R. Guy, Amer. Math. Monthly 90 (1983), 196--199] asked whether a set of vectors in a d-dimensional real vector space such that the l-p distance between any pair is 1, has cardinality at most d+1. We show that this is true for p=4 and any d >= 1, and false for all 1<p<2 with d sufficiently large, depending on p. More generally we show that the maximum cardinality is at most $(2\lceil p/4\rceil-1)d+1$ if p is an even integer, and at least $(1+ε_p)d$ if 1<p<2, where $ε_p>0$ depends on p.
Let $E^n$ denote the (real) $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. It is not known whether an equilateral set in the $\ell_1$ sum of $E^a$ and $E^b$, denoted here as $E^a \oplus_1 E^b$, has maximum size at least $\dim(E^a \oplus_1 E^b) + 1 = a + b + 1$ for all pairs of $a$ and $b$. We show, via some explicit constructions of equilateral sets, that this holds for all $a \leqslant 27$, as well as some other instances.
We show that every tiling of a convex set in the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ by equilateral triangles of mutually different sizes contains arbitrarily small tiles. The proof is purely elementary up to the discussion of one family of tilings of the full plane $\mathbb{R}^2$, which is based on a surprising connection to a random walk on a directed graph.
We study the sizes of delta-additive sets of unit vectors in a d-dimensional normed space: the sum of any two vectors has norm at most delta. One-additive sets originate in finding upper bounds of vertex degrees of Steiner Minimum Trees in finite dimensional smooth normed spaces (Z. Füredi, J. C. Lagarias, F. Morgan, 1991). We show that the maximum size of a delta-additive set over all normed spaces of dimension d grows exponentially in d for fixed delta>2/3, stays bounded for delta<2/3, and grows linearly at the threshold delta=2/3. Furthermore, the maximum size of a 2/3-additive set in d-dim…
We study open sets $\mathcal{P}$ in normed spaces $X$ attaining a large volume while avoiding pairs of points at integral distance. The proposed task is to find sharp inequalities for the maximum possible $d$-dimensional volume. This problem can be viewed as an opposite to known problems on point sets with pairwise integral or rational distances.
We consider the covering of a ball in certain normed spaces by its congruent subsets and show that if the finite number of sets is not greater than the dimensionality of the space, then the centre of the ball either belongs to the interior of each set, or doesn't belong to the interior of any set. We also provide some examples when it belongs to the interior of exactly one set. These are the specific cases of the modified problem originally posed for dissection.
The midpoint set M(S) of a set S of points is the set of all midpoints of pairs of points in S. We study the largest cardinality of a midpoint set M(S) in a finite-dimensional normed space, such that M(S) is contained in the unit sphere, and S is outside the closed unit ball. We show in three dimensions that this maximum (if it exists) is determined by the facial structure of the unit ball. In higher dimensions no such relationship exists. We also determine the maximum for euclidean and sup norm spaces.

We characterize the three-dimensional spaces admitting at least six or at least seven equidistant points. In particular, we show the existence of $C^\infty$ norms on $\R^3$ admitting six equidistant points, which refutes a conjecture of Lawlor and Morgan (1994, Pacific J. Math \textbf{166}, 55--83), and gives the existence of energy-minimizing cones with six regions for certain uniformly convex norms on $\R^3$. On the other hand, no differentiable norm on $\R^3$ admits seven equidistant points. A crucial ingredient in the proof is a classification of all three-dimensional antipodal sets. We al…
We survey elementary results in Minkowski spaces (i.e. finite dimensional Banach spaces) that deserve to be collected together, and give simple proofs for some of them. We place special emphasis on planar results. Many of these results have often been rediscovered as lemmas to other results. In Part I we cover the following topics: The triangle inequality and consequences such as the monotonicity lemma, geometric characterizations of strict convexity, normality (Birkhoff orthogonality), conjugate diameters and Radon curves, equilateral triangles and the affine regular hexagon construction, equ…
In the paper the Fermat-Torricelli problem is considered. The problem asks a point minimizing the sum of distances to arbitrarily given points in d-dimensional real normed spaces. Various generalizations of this problem are outlined, current methods of solving and some recent results in this area are presented. The aim of the article is to find an answer to the following question: in what norms on the plane is the solution of the Fermat-Torricelli problem unique for any three points. The uniqueness criterion is formulated and proved in the work, in addition, the application of the criterion on…
A polytope in a finite-dimensional normed space is subequilateral if the length in the norm of each of its edges equals its diameter. Subequilateral polytopes occur in the study of two unrelated subjects: surface energy minimizing cones and edge-antipodal polytopes. We show that the number of vertices of a subequilateral polytope in any d-dimensional normed space is bounded above by (d/2+1)^d for any d >= 2. The same upper bound then follows for the number of vertices of the edge-antipodal polytopes introduced by I.Talata (Period. Math. Hungar. 38 (1999), 231--246). This is a constructive impr…
The Fermat--Steiner problem is to find all points of the metric space Y such that the sum of the distances from each of them to points from some fixed finite subset A = {A_1, ..., A_n} of the space Y is minimal. This problem is considered in the case when Y=H(X) is the space of non-empty compact subsets of a finite-dimensional normed space X endowed with the Hausdorff metric, i.e. H(X) is a hyperspace over X. The set A is called boundary, all A_i are called boundary sets, and the compact sets that realize the minimum of the sum of distances to A_i are called Steiner compacts. In this paper, we…
Hujter and Lángi introduced the $k$-fold Borsuk number of a set $S$ in Euclidean $n$-space of diameter $d > 0$ as the smallest cardinality of a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $S$, of diameters strictly less than $d$, such that every point of $S$ belongs to at least $k$ members of $\mathcal F$. We investigate whether a $k$-fold Borsuk covering of a set $S$ in a finite dimensional real normed space can be extended to a completion of $S$. Furthermore, we determine the $k$-fold Borsuk number of sets in not angled normed planes, and give a partial characterization for sets in angled planes.

Given two sets of points $A$ and $B$ in a normed plane, we prove that there are two linearly separable sets $A'$ and $B'$ such that $\mathrm{diam}(A')\leq \mathrm{diam}(A)$, $\mathrm{diam}(B')\leq \mathrm{diam}(B)$, and $A'\cup B'=A\cup B.$ This extends a result for the Euclidean distance to symmetric convex distance functions. As a consequence, some Euclidean $k$-clustering algorithms are adapted to normed planes, for instance, those that minimize the maximum, the sum, or the sum of squares of the $k$ cluster diameters. The 2-clustering problem when two different bounds are imposed to the dia…
We consider Marstrand type projection theorems for closest-point projections in the normed space $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove that if a norm on $\mathbb{R}^2$ is regular enough, then the analogues of the well-known statements from the Euclidean setting hold, while they fail for norms whose unit balls have corners. We establish our results by verifying Peres and Schlag's transversality property and thereby also obtain a Besicovitch-Federer type characterization of purely unrectifiable sets.
One of the oldest and richest problems from continuous location science is the famous Fermat-Torricelli problem, asking for the unique point in Euclidean space that has minimal distance sum to n given (non-collinear) points. Many natural and interesting generalizations of this problem were investigated, e.g., by extending it to non-Euclidean spaces and modifying the used distance functions, or by generalizing the configuration of participating geometric objects. In the present paper, we extend the Fermat-Torricelli problem in a two-fold way: more general than for normed spaces, the unit balls …
We determine the set of Busemann points of an arbitrary finite-dimensional normed space. These are the points of the horofunction boundary that are the limits of "almost-geodesics". We prove that all points in the horofunction boundary are Busemann points if and only if the set of extreme sets of the dual unit ball is closed in the Painleve-Kuratowski topology.
In this paper, we study the deformation of the intersection of one compact set with a closed neighborhood of another compact set by changing the radius of this neighborhood. It is shown that in finite-dimensional normed spaces, in the case when both compact sets are non-empty convex subsets, such an operation is continuous in the topology generated by the Hausdorff metric. The question of the continuous dependence of the described intersection on the radius of the neighborhood arose as a by-product of the development of the theory of extremal networks. However, it turned out to be interesting …
Kusner asked if $n+1$ points is the maximum number of points in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that the $\ell_p$ distance $(1<p<\infty)$ between any two points is $1$. We present an improvement to the best known upper bound when $p$ is large in terms of $n$, as well as a generalization of the bound to $s$-distance sets. We also study equilateral sets in the $\ell_p$ sums of Euclidean spaces, deriving upper bounds on the size of an equilateral set for when $p=\infty$, $p$ is even, and for any $1\le p<\infty$.

In 1994, Martin Gardner stated a set of questions concerning the dissection of a square or an equilateral triangle in three similar parts. Meanwhile, Gardner's questions have been generalized and some of them are already solved. In the present paper, we solve more of his questions and treat them in a much more general context. Let $D\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a given set and let $f_1,...,f_k$ be injective continuous mappings. Does there exist a set $X$ such that $D = X \cup f_1(X) \cup ... \cup f_k(X)$ is satisfied with a non-overlapping union? We prove that such a set $X$ exists for certain cho…
The notion of ball convexity, considered in finite dimensional real Banach spaces, is a natural and useful extension of usual convexity; one replaces intersections of half-spaces by suitable intersections of balls. A subset $S$ of a normed space is called ball convex if it coincides with its ball hull, which is obtained as intersection of all balls (of fixed radius) containing $S$. Ball convex sets are closely related to notions like ball polytopes, complete sets, bodies of constant width, and spindle convexity. We will study geometric properties of ball convex bodies in normed spaces, for exa…

Let X be a 2-dimensional normed space, and let BX be the unit ball in X. We discuss the question of how large the set of extremal points of BX must be if X contains a well-distributed set whose distance set Delta satisfies the estimate |Δ\cap[0,N]|<CN^{3/2 -ε}. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a well-distributed set with |Δ\cap [0,N]| < CN.

Let $S$ be a finite set with $n$ elements in a real linear space. Let $\cJ_S$ be a set of $n$ intervals in $\nR$. We introduce a convex operator $\co(S,\cJ_S)$ which generalizes the familiar concepts of the convex hull $\conv S$ and the affine hull $\aff S$ of $S$. We establish basic properties of this operator. It is proved that each homothet of $\conv S$ that is contained in $\aff S$ can be obtained using this operator. A variety of convex subsets of $\aff S$ can also be obtained. For example, this operator assigns a regular dodecagon to the 4-element set consisting of the vertices and the o…

Extending the celebrated results of Alexandrov (1958) and Korevaar-Ros (1988) for smooth sets, as well as the results of Schneider (1979) and the first author (1999) for arbitrary convex bodies, we obtain for the first time the characterization of the isoperimetric sets of a uniformly convex smooth finite-dimensional normed space (i.e. Wulff shapes) in the non-smooth and non-convex setting, based on the natural geometric condition involving the curvature measures. More specifically we show, under a natural mean-convexity assumption, that finite unions of disjoint Wulff shapes are the only sets…
The structure of $k$-diametral point configurations in Minkowski $d$-space is shown to be closely related to the properties of $k$-antipodal point configurations in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular, the maximum size of $k$-diametral point configurations of Minkowski $d$-spaces is obtained for given $k\geq 2$ and $d\geq 2$ generalizing Petty's results (Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 29: 369-374, 1971) on equilateral sets in Minkowski spaces. Furthermore, bounds are derived for the maximum size of $k$-diametral point configurations in Euclidean $d$-space. In the proofs convexity methods are combined with vol…
Let $F \subset \R^n$ be a closed set and $n=2$ or $n=3$. S. Ferry (1975) proved that then, for almost all $r>0$, the level set (distance sphere, $r$-boundary) $S_r(F):= \{x \in \R^n: \dist(x,F) = r\}$ is a topological $(n-1)$-dimensional manifold. This result was improved by J.H.G. Fu (1985). We show that Ferry's result is an easy consequence of the only fact that the distance function $d(x)= \dist(x,F)$ is locally DC and has no stationary point in $\R^n\setminus F$. Using this observation, we show that Ferry's (and even Fu's) result extends to sufficiently smooth normed linear spaces $X$ with…
In this paper we are interested in "optimal" universal geometric inequalities involving the area, diameter and inradius of convex bodies. The term "optimal" is to be understood in the following sense: we tackle the issue of minimizing/maximizing the Lebesgue measure of a convex body among all convex sets of given diameter and inradius. The minimization problem in the two-dimensional case has been solved in a previous work, by M. Hernandez-Cifre and G. Salinas. In this article, we provide a generalization to the n-dimensional case based on a different approach, as well as the complete solving o…
