Absolute extensors in extension theory

Large scale absolute extensors

This paper is devoted to dualization of dimension-theoretical results from the small scale to the large scale. So far there are two approaches for such dualization: one consisting of creating analogs of small scale concepts and the other amounting to the covering dimension of the Higson corona $ν(X)$ of $X$. Bockstein basis and resolution theorems in extension theory

We prove a generalization of the Edwards-Walsh Resolution Theorem: Theorem: Let G be an abelian group for which $P_G$ equals the set of all primes $\mathbb{P}$, where $P_G=\{p \in \mathbb{P}: \Z_{(p)}\in$ Bockstein Basis $ σ(G)\}$. Nagata-Assouad dimension via Lipschitz extensions

In the first part of the paper we show how to relate several dimension theories (asymptotic dimension with Higson property, asymptotic dimension of Gromov, and capacity dimension of Buyalo \cite{Buyalo1}) to Nagata-Assouad dimension. This is done by applying two functors on the Lipschitz category of metric spaces: microscopic and macroscopic. In the second part we identify (among spaces of finite Nagata-Assouad dimension) spaces of Nagata-Assouad dimension at most $n$ as those for which the $n$-sphere $S^n$ is a Lipschitz extensor. Large scale and small scale analogs of that result are given.

Maps to the projective plane

We prove the projective plane $\rp^2$ is an absolute extensor of a finite-dimensional metric space $X$ if and only if the cohomological dimension mod 2 of $X$ does not exceed 1. This solves one of the remaining difficult problems (posed by A.N.Dranishnikov) in extension theory. One of the main tools is the computation of the fundamental group of the function space $\Map(\rp^n,\rp^{n+1})$ (based at inclusion) as being isomorphic to either $\Z_4$ or $\Z_2\oplus\Z_2$ for $n\ge 1$. Double surgery and the above fact yield the proof.

Nagata dimension, quasisymmetric embeddings, and Lipschitz extensions

We discuss a variation of Gromov's notion of asymptotic dimension that was introduced and named Nagata dimension by Assouad. The Nagata dimension turns out to be a quasisymmetry invariant of metric spaces. The class of metric spaces with finite Nagata dimension includes in particular all doubling spaces, metric trees, euclidean buildings, and homogeneous or pinched negatively curved Hadamard manifolds.
