Let $A$ be a unital simple C*-algebra with tracial rank zero and $X$ be a compact metric space. Suppose that $h_1, h_2: C(X)\to A$ are two unital monomorphisms. We show that $h_1$ and $h_2$ are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if $$ [h_1]=[h_2] {\rm in} KL(C(X),A) {\rm and} τ\circ h_1(f)=τ\circ h_2(f) $$ for every $f\in C(X)$ and every trace $τ$ of $A.$ Adopting a theorem of Tomiyama, we introduce a notion of approximate conjugacy for minimal dynamical systems. Let $X$ be a compact metric space and $α, β: X\to X$ be two minimal homeomorphisms. Using the above mentioned result, we show that two dynamical systems are approximately conjugate in that sense if and only if a $K$-theoretical condition is satisfied. In the case that $X$ is the Cantor set, this notion coincides with strong orbit equivalence of Giordano, Putnam and Skau and the $K$-theoretical condition is equivalent to saying that the associate crossed product C*-algebras are isomorphic.
Another application of the above mentioned result is given for $C^*$-dynamical systems related to a problem of Kishimoto. Let $A$ be a unital simple AH-algebra with no dimension growth and with real rank zero, and let $α\in Aut(A).$ We prove that if $α^r$ fixes a large subgroup of $K_0(A)$ and has the tracial Rokhlin property then $A\rtimes_α\Z$ is again a unital simple AH-algebra with no dimension growth and with real rank zero.
A class of C*-algebras is described for which the homomorphism from $C_0(0,1]$ to the algebra may be classified by means of the Cuntz semigroup functor. Examples are given of algebras--simple and non-simple--for which this classification fails. It is shown that a suitable suspension of the Cuntz semigroup functor deals successfully with some of these counterexamples.
We study a pair of $C^*$-algebras by associating a $*$-homomorphism from $A$ to $B$ allowing an approximate left-inverse to the sequence algebra of $A$ in a manner reminiscent of several tracial approximation properties. We are particularly interested how regularity properties in the Elliott classification program pass from $B$ to $A$. Among them, we show that the strict comparison property and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability pass from $B$ to $A$ in our setting.
We classify unital monomorphisms into certain simple Z-stable C^*-algebras up to approximate unitary equivalence. The domain algebra C is allowed to be any unital separable commutative C^*-algebra, or any unital simple separable nuclear Z-stable C^*-algebra satisfying the UCT such that C\otimes B is of tracial rank zero for a UHF algebra B. The target algebra A is allowed to be any unital simple separable Z-stable C^*-algebra such that A\otimes B has tracial rank zero for a UHF algebra B, or any unital simple separable exact Z-stable C^*-algebra whose projections separate traces and whose extr…
We classify equivariant *-homomorphisms between C*-dynamical systems associated to actions of finite groups on C*-algebras with the Rokhlin property. In addition, the given actions are classified. An obstruction is obtained for the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra allowing such an action. We also obtain an equivariant UHF-absorption result.
We prove that if two nonzero homomorphisms from the Cuntz algebra O_infinity to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_infinity is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_infinity for which the K_0 group can be an arbitrary countable abelian gr…
We prove that if two homomorphisms from O_{\infty} to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_{\infty} is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_{\infty}, for which the K_0-group can be an arbitrary countable abelian group with no even torsion.
We define and examine sequentially split $*$-homomorphisms between $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras and $\mathrm{C}^*$-dynamical systems. For a $*$-homomorphism, the property of being sequentially split can be regarded as an approximate weakening of being a split-injective inclusion of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras. We show for a sequentially split $*$-homomorphism that a multitude of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic approximation properties pass from the target algebra to the domain algebra, including virtually all important approximation properties currently used in the classification theory of $\mathrm{C}^*$-alge…
We define a tracial analogue of the sequentially split $*$-homomorphism between $C^*$-algebras of Barlak and Szabó and show that several important approximation properties related to the classification theory of $C^*$-algebras pass from the target algebra to the domain algebra. Then we show that the tracial Rokhlin property of the finite group $G$ action on a $C^*$-algebra $A$ gives rise to a tracial version of sequentially split $*$-homomorphism from $A\rtimes_αG$ to $M_{|G|}(A)$ and the tracial Rokhlin property of an inclusion $C^*$-algebras $A\subset P$ with a conditional expectation $E:A \…
We introduce the concept of finitely coloured equivalence for unital *-homomorphisms between C*-algebras, for which unitary equivalence is the 1-coloured case. We use this notion to classify *-homomorphisms from separable, unital, nuclear C*-algebras into ultrapowers of simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras with compact extremal trace space up to 2-coloured equivalence by their behaviour on traces; this is based on a 1-coloured classification theorem for certain order zero maps, also in terms of tracial data. As an application we calculate the nuclear dimension of non-AF, simple, separ…

Let $G$ be a locally compact abelian group. By modifying a theorem of Pedersen, it follows that actions of $G$ on $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$ are outer conjugate if and only if there is an isomorphism of the crossed products that is equivariant for the dual actions and preserves the images of $A$ and $B$ in the multiplier algebras of the crossed products. The rigidity problem discussed in this paper deals with the necessity of the last condition concerning the images of $A$ and $B$. There is an alternative formulation of the problem: an action of the dual group $\hat G$ together with a suitably…
We show that the Elliott invariant is a classifying invariant for the class of $C^*$-algebras that are simple unital infinite dimensional inductive limits of sequences of finite direct sums of building blocks of the form $$ \{f\in C(\T)\otimes M_n: f(x_i)\in M_{d_i}, i=1,2,...,N\}, $$ where $x_1,x_2,...,x_N\in\T$, $d_1,d_2,...,d_N$ are integers dividing $n$, and $M_{d_i}$ is embedded unitally into $M_n$. Furthermore we prove existence and uniqueness theorems for *-homomorphisms between such algebras and we identify the range of the invariant.
In this paper, we consider the real rank zero $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras which can be written as an inductive limit of the Elliott-Thomsen building blocks and prove a decomposition result for the connecting homomorphisms; this technique will be used in the classification theorem.
Given a C$^*$-dynamical system $(A, G, α)$ one defines a homomorphism, called the Chern-Connes character, that take an element in $K_0(A) \oplus K_1(A)$, the K-theory groups of the C$^*$-algebra $A$, and maps it into $H_{\mathbb{R}}^*(G)$, the real deRham cohomology ring of $G$. We explictly compute this homomorphism for the examples $(\overline{Ψ_{cl}^0(S^1)}, S^1, α)$ and $(\overline{Ψ_{cl}^0(S^2)}, SO(3), α)$, where $\overline{Ψ_{cl}^0(M)}$ denotes the C$^*$-algebra generated by the classical pseudodifferential operators of zero order in the manifold $M$ and $α$ the action of conjugation by…
We introduce and study strongly self-absorbing actions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras. This is an equivariant generalization of a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra to the setting of C*-dynamical systems. The main result is the following equivariant McDuff-type absorption theorem: A cocycle action $(α,u): G\curvearrowright A$ on a separable C*-algebra is cocycle conjugate to its tensorial stabilization with a strongly self-absorbing action $γ: G\curvearrowright\mathcal{D}$, if and only if there exists an equivariant and unital $*$-homomorphism from $\mathcal{D}$ into the central sequ…
We prove an algebraic version of the Gauge-Invariant Uniqueness Theorem, a result which gives information about the injectivity of certain homomorphisms between ${\mathbb Z}$-graded algebras. As our main application of this theorem, we obtain isomorphisms between the Leavitt path algebras of specified graphs. From these isomorphisms we are able to achieve two ends. First, we show that the $K_0$ groups of various sets of purely infinite simple Leavitt path algebras, together with the position of the identity element in $K_0$, classifies the algebras in these sets up to isomorphism. Second, we s…
Starting from Kirchberg's theorems announced in 1994, namely O_2 tensor A is isomorphic to O_2 for separable unital nuclear simple A and O_infinity tensor A is isomorphic to A if in addition A is purely infinite, we prove that KK-equivalence implies isomorphism for nonunital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebras. It follows that if A and B are unital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebras which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem, and if there is a graded isomorphism from K_* (A) to K_* (B) which preserves the class of the identity, then A is isomorphic to B.…
Artin's representation is an injective homomorphism from the braid group $B_n$ on $n$ strands into $\operatorname{Aut}\mathbb{F}_n$, the automorphism group of the free group $\mathbb{F}_n$ on $n$ generators. The representation induces maps $B_n\to\operatorname{Aut}C^*_r(\mathbb{F}_n)$ and $B_n\to\operatorname{Aut}C^*(\mathbb{F}_n)$ into the automorphism groups of the corresponding group $C^*$-algebras of $\mathbb{F}_n$. These maps also have natural restrictions to the pure braid group $P_n$. In this paper, we consider twisted versions of the actions by cocycles with values in the circle, and d…
