Let $G$ be a discrete group generated by reflections in hyperbolic or Euclidean space, and $H\subset G$ be a finite index subgroup generated by reflections. Suppose that the fundamental chamber of $G$ is a finite volume polytope with $k$ facets. In this paper, we prove that the fundamental chamber of $H$ has at least $k$ facets.
Let $P$ be a convex polytope in the Euclidean space $\E^n$. Consider the group $G_P$ generated by reflections in the facets of $P$. We say that $P$ {\it generates a reflection group $G_P$}. In the present paper, we list all Euclidean simplices generating discrete reflection groups.
We discuss the classification of reflection subgroups of finite and affine Weyl groups from the point of view of their root systems. A short case free proof is given of the well known classification of the isomorphism classes of reflection subgroups using completed Dynkin diagrams, for which there seems to be no convenient source in the literature. This is used as a basis for treating the affine case, where finer classifications of reflection subgroups are given, and combinatorial aspects of root systems are shown to appear. Various parameter sets for certain types of subsets of roots are inte…
We prove a Morse Lemma for coarsely regular quasigeodesics in nonpositively curved symmetric spaces and euclidean buildings X. The main application is a simpler coarse geometric characterization of Morse subgroups of the isometry groups Isom(X) as undistorted subgroups which are coarsely uniformly regular. We show furthermore that they must be word hyperbolic. We introduced this class of discrete subgroups in our earlier paper, in the context of symmetric spaces, where various equivalent geometric and dynamical characterizations of word hyperbolic Morse subgroups were established, including th…
We introduce the notion of ideal triangle in the Bruhat-Tits building associated to a split group -- it is analogous to the usual notion of triangle, but one vertex is "at infinity" in a certain direction. We prove that the algebraic variety of based ideal triangles with prescribed side-lengths is naturally isomorphic to a suitable variety of genuine triangles. From theorems pertaining to genuine triangles, we deduce saturation theorems related to branching to Levi subgroups and to the constant term homomorphisms.
We call a non-discrete Euclidean building a Bruhat-Tits space if its automorphism group contains a subgroup that induces the subgroup generated by all the root groups of a root datum of the building at infinity. This is the class of non-discrete Euclidean buildings introduced and studied by Bruhat and Tits. We give the complete classification of Bruhat-Tits spaces whose building at infinity is the fixed point set of a polarity of an ambient building of type B_2, F_4 or G_2 associated with a Ree or Suzuki group endowed with the usual root datum. (In the B_2 and G_2 cases, this fixed point set i…
We give a thorough analysis of those subgroups of SO(3) generated by rotations about perpendicular axes by 2π/p and 2π/q. A corollary is that such a group is the free product of the cyclic groups of rotations about the separate axes if and only if p,q\ge 3 and are both odd. These groups are naturally associated with a family of hierarchical tilings of Euclidean 3-space.
Non-transitive subgroups of the orthogonal group play an important role in the non-Euclidean geometry. If $G$ is a closed subgroup in the orthogonal group such that the orbit of a single Euclidean unit vector does not cover the (Euclidean) unit sphere centered at the origin then there always exists a non-Euclidean Minkowski functional such that the elements of $G$ preserve the Minkowskian length of vectors. In other words the Minkowski geometry is an alternative of the Euclidean geometry for the subgroup $G$. It is rich of isometries if $G$ is "close enough" to the orthogonal group or at least…
An idea to present a classical Lie group of positive dimension by generators and relations sounds dubious, but happens to be fruitful. The isometry groups of classical geometries admit elegant and useful presentations by generators and relations closely related to geometry. They allow to make fast and efficient geometric calculations. In this paper simple presentations of the isometry groups of Euclidean plane, 2-sphere, the real projective plane and groups SO(3), O(n) are introduced.
The structure of the coincidence symmetry group of an arbitrary $n$-dimensional lattice in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space is considered by describing a set of generators. Particular attention is given to the coincidence isometry subgroup (the subgroup formed by those coincidence symmetries which are elements of the orthogonal group). Conditions under which the coincidence isometry group can be generated by reflections defined by vectors of the lattice will be discussed, and an algorithm to decompose an arbitrary element of the coincidence isometry group in terms of reflections defined by …
It is known that the Burau representation of the 4-strand braid group is faithful if and only if certain matrices f and k generate a (non-abelian) free group. Regarding f and k as isometries of a euclidean building we show that f^3 and k^3 generate a free group. We give two proofs, one utilizing the metric geometry of the building, and the other using simplicial retractions.
We prove a decomposition result for a group $G$ acting strongly transitively on the Tits boundary of a Euclidean building. As an application we provide a local to global result for discrete Euclidean buildings, which generalizes results in the locally compact case by Caprace--Ciobotaru and Burger--Mozes. Let $X$ be a Euclidean building without cone factors. If a group $G$ of automorphisms of $X$ acts strongly transitively on the spherical building at infinity $\partial X$, then the $G$-stabilizer of every affine apartment in $X$ contains all reflections along thick walls. In particular $G$ act…
We study the behavior of Sobolev mappings defined on the Heisenberg groups with respect to a foliation by left cosets of a horizontal homogeneous subgroup. We quantitatively estimate, in terms of Euclidean Hausdorff dimension, the size of the set of cosets that are mapped onto sets of high dimension. The proof of our main result combines ideas of Gehring and Mostow about the absolute continuity of quasiconformal mappings with Mattila's projection and slicing machinery.
