We explore the connections between automata, groups, limit spaces of self-similar actions, and tilings. In particular, we show how a group acting ``nicely'' on a tree gives rise to a self-covering of a topological groupoid, and how the group can be reconstructed from the groupoid and its covering. The connection is via finite-state automata. These define decomposition rules, or self-similar tilings, on leaves of the solenoid associated with the covering.
We prove that for any infinite countable amenable group $G$, any $ε> 0$ and any finite subset $K\subset G$, there exists a tiling (partition of $G$ into finite "tiles" using only finitely many "shapes"), where all the tiles are $(K; ε)$-invariant. Moreover, our tiling has topological entropy zero (i.e., subexponential complexity of patterns). As an application, we construct a free action of $G$ (in the sense that the mappings, associated to different from unity elements of $G$, have no fixpoints), on a zero-dimensional space, and which has topological entropy zero.
We describe the structure of quasiflats in two-dimensio\-nal Artin groups. We rely on the notion of metric systolicity developed in our previous work. We study automaton groups without singular points, that is, points in the boundary for which the map that associates to each point its stabilizer, is not continuous. This is motivated by the problem of finding examples of infinite bireversible automaton groups with all trivial stabilizers in the boundary, raised by Grigorchuk and Savchuk. We study the universal groups of inverse semigroups associated with point sets and with tilings. We focus our attention on two classes of examples. The first class consists of point sets which are obtained by a cut and projection scheme (so-called model sets). Here we introduce another inverse semigroup which is given in terms of the defining data of the projection scheme and related to the model set by the empire congruence. The second class is given by one-dimensional tilings.

In this article we generalize the theory of subgroup graphs of subgroups of free groups to finite index subgroups $H$ of finitely generated groups $G$. We study and prove various properties of $H$ in relation to its subgroup graph $Γ(H)$. For a finitely generated group $G$ we consider the poset $P_{\text{fi}}(G)$ of all right cosets of all proper finite index subgroups of $G$. We use the theory of subgroup graphs to prove that for many finitely generated infinite groups the order complex $ΔP_{\text{fi}} (G)$ and the corresponding nerve complex are contractible.
