Monstrous and Generalized Moonshine and Permutation Orbifolds

We consider the application of permutation orbifold constructions towards a new possible understanding of the genus zero property in Monstrous and Generalized Moonshine. We describe a theory of twisted Hecke operators in this setting and conjecture on the form of Generalized Moonshine replication formulas.

The Monstrous Moonshine Picture

We describe the finite subgraph $\mathfrak{M}$ of Conway's Big Picture required to describe all $171$ genus zero groups appearing in monstrous moonshine. We determine the local structure of $\mathfrak{M}$ and give a purely group-theoretic description of this picture, based on powers of the conjugacy classes $24J$ and $8C$. We expect similar results to hold for umbral moonshine groups and give the details for the largest Mathieu group $M_{24}$.

Monstrous Moonshine of higher weight

We determine the space of 1-point correlation functions associated with the Moonshine module: they are precisely those modular forms of non-negative integral weight which are holomorphic in the upper half plane, have a pole of order at most 1 at infinity, and whose Fourier expansion has constant 0. There are Monster-equivariant analogues in which one naturally associates to each element in the Monster a modular form of fixed weight k, the case k=0 corresponding to the original ``Moonshine'' of Conway and Norton.

In these notes, based on lectures given in Istanbul, we give an introduction both to Monstrous Moonshine and to the classification of rational conformal field theories, using this as an excuse to explore several related structures and go on a little tour of modern math. Characterizing Moonshine Functions by Vertex-Operator-Algebraic Conditions

Given a holomorphic $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra $V$ with graded dimension $j-744$, Borcherds's proof of the monstrous moonshine conjecture implies any finite order automorphism of $V$ has graded trace given by a "completely replicable function", and by work of Cummins and Gannon, these functions are principal moduli of genus zero modular groups. The action of the monster simple group on the monster vertex operator algebra produces 171 such functions, known as the monstrous moonshine functions. Generalised Moonshine and Abelian Orbifold Constructions

We consider the application of Abelian orbifold constructions in Meromorphic Conformal Field Theory (MCFT) towards an understanding of various aspects of Monstrous Moonshine and Generalised Moonshine. We review some of the basic concepts in MCFT and Abelian orbifold constructions of MCFTs and summarise some of the relevant physics lore surrounding such constructions including aspects of the modular group, the fusion algebra and the notion of a self-dual MCFT. A Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebra with Conway symmetry

We construct a Borcherds Kac-Moody (BKM) superalgebra on which the Conway group Co$_0$ acts faithfully. We show that the BKM algebra is generated by the BRST-closed states in a chiral superstring theory. We use this construction to produce denominator identities for the chiral partition functions of the Conway module $V^{s\natural}$, a supersymmetric $c=12$ chiral conformal field theory whose (twisted) partition functions enjoy moonshine properties and which has automorphism group isomorphic to Co$_0$.
