We study bubbling phenomena of anti-self-dual instantons on $\H^2\times§$, where $§$ is a closed Riemann surface. The restriction of the instanton to each boundary slice $\{z\}\times§$, $z\in\pd\H^2$ is required to lie in a Lagrangian submanifold of the moduli space of flat connections over $§$ that arises from the restrictions to the boundary of flat connections on a handle body.
We establish an energy quantization result for sequences of instantons with bounded energy near $\{0\}\times§$: Either their curvature is in fact uniformly bounded in a neighbourhood of that slice (leading to a compactness result) or there is a concentration of some minimum quantum of energy. We moreover obtain a removable singularity result for instantons with finite energy in a punctured neighbourhood of $\{0\}\times§$. This completes the analytic foundations for the construction of an instanton Floer homology for 3-manifolds with boundary. This Floer homology is an intermediate object in the program proposed by Salamon for the proof of the Atiyah-Floer conjecture for homology-3-spheres.
In the interior case, for anti-self-instantons on $\R^2\times§$, our methods provide a new approach to the removable singularity theorem by Sibner-Sibner for codimension 2 singularities with a holonomy condition.
In [OW2,OW3], the authors studied the nonlinear elliptic system $$ \overline{\partial}^πw = 0, \, d(w^*λ\circ j) = 0 $$ without involving symplectization for each given contact triad $(Q,λ, J)$, and established the a priori $W^{k,2}$ elliptic estimates and proved the asymptotic (subsequence) convergence of the map $w: \dot Σ\to Q$ for any solution, called a contact instanton, on $\dot Σ$ under the hypothesis $\|w^*λ\|_{C^0} < \infty$ and $d^πw \in L^2 \cap L^4$. The asymptotic limit of a contact instanton is a `spiraling' instanton along a `rotating' Reeb orbit near each puncture on a puncture…
The purpose of this survey is to explain an approach to the Atiyah-Floer conjecture via a new instanton Floer homology with Lagrangian boundary conditions. This is a joint project with Dietmar Salamon. This paper also provides a rough guide to the analysis of anti-self-dual instantons with Lagrangian boundary conditions (in earlier papers), which is the crucial ingredient of our approach.
We study a nonlocal boundary value problem for anti-self-dual instantons on 4-manifolds with a space-time splitting of the boundary. The model case is $\R \times Y$, where $Y$ is a compact oriented 3-manifold with boundary $Σ$. The restriction of the instanton to each time slice ${t}\timesΣ$ is required to lie in a fixed (singular) Lagrangian submanifold of the moduli space of flat connections over $Σ$. We establish the basic regularity and compactness properties (assuming $L^p$-bounds on the curvature) as well as the Fredholm theory in a compact model case. The motivation for studying this bo…
We prove that Floer cohomology of cyclic Lagrangian correspondences is invariant under transverse and embedded composition of Lagrangians under a general set of assumptions. In the Corrigendum, we introduce an additional assumption of monotonicity for cylinders which is needed to avoid bubbling at the Y-end.
We assign, to a Langrangian submanifold $L$, a new homology which manages the bubbling of disks by means of auxiliary Morse data. This invariant of the Hamiltonian isotopy class of $L$ has many applications and naturally leads to a universal Floer theory for Lagrangian intersections.
In this paper we define instanton Floer homology groups for a pair consisting of a compact oriented 3-manifold with boundary and a Lagrangian submanifold of the moduli space of flat SU(2)-connections over the boundary. We carry out the construction for a general class of irreducible, monotone boundary conditions. The main examples of such Lagrangian submanifolds are induced from a disjoint union of handle bodies such that the union of the 3-manifold and the handle bodies is an integral homology 3-sphere. The motivation for introducing these invariants arises from our program for a proof of the…
The mixed equation, defined as a combination of the anti-self-duality equation in gauge theory and Cauchy-Riemann equation in symplectic geometry, is studied. In particular, regularity and Fredholm properties are established for the solutions of this equation, and it is shown that the moduli spaces of solutions to the mixed equation satisfy a compactness property which combines Uhlenbeck and Gormov compactness theorems. The results of this paper are used in a sequel to study the Atiyah-Floer conjecture.
We prove the Arnold-Givental conjecture for a class of Lagrangian submanifolds in Marsden-Weinstein quotients which are fixpoint sets of some antisymplectic involution. For these Lagrangians the Floer homology cannot in general be defined by standard means due to the bubbling phenomenon. To overcome this difficulty we consider moment Floer homology whose boundary operator is defined by counting solutions of the symplectic vortex equations on the strip which have better compactness properties than the original Floer equations.
In the present article, we provide analytic foundation of the following nonlinear elliptic system, called the \emph{Hamiltonian-perturbed contact instanton equation}, $$ (du - X_H \otimes γ)^{π(0,1)} = 0, \quad d(e^{g_{H, u}}u^*(λ+ H \otimes γ)\circ j) = 0 $$ associated to a contact triad $(M,λ,J)$ and contact Hamiltonian $H$ and its boundary value problem under the Legendrian boundary condition. (1) We identify the correct choice of the action functional for perturbed contact Hamiltonian trajectories which provides a gradient structure for the system and derive its first variation formula. (2…
There have been a number of constructions of Lagrangian Floer homology invariants for $3$-manifolds defined in terms of symplectic character varieties arising from Heegaard splittings. With the aim of establishing an Atiyah-Floer counterpart of Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton homology, we generalize one of these, due to H. Horton, to produce a Lagrangian Floer invariant of a knot or link $K \subset Y$ in a closed, oriented $3$-manifold, which we call symplectic instanton knot homology ($\mathrm{SIK}$). We use a multi-pointed Heegaard diagram to parametrize the gluing together of a p…
We examine the $L^2$-topology of the gauge orbits over a closed Riemann surface. We prove a subtle local slice theorem based on the div-curl Lemma of harmonic analysis, and deduce local pathwise connectedness and local uniform quasiconvexity of the gauge orbits. Using these, we generalize compactness results for anti-self-dual instantons with Lagrangian boundary counditions to general gauge invariant Lagrangian submanifolds. This provides the foundation for the construction of instanton Floer homology for pairs of a $3$-manifold with boundary and a Lagrangian in the configuration space over th…
Given a closed, connected, oriented 3-manifold with positive first Betti number, one can define an instanton Floer group as well as a quilted Lagrangian Floer group. The quilted Atiyah-Floer conjecture states that these cohomology groups are isomorphic. We initiate a program for proving this conjecture.
In this paper, we first provide an explicit description of {\it all} holomorphic discs (``disc instantons'') attached to Lagrangian torus fibers of arbitrary compact toric manifolds, and prove their Fredholm regularity. Using this, we compute Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono's (FOOO's) obstruction (co)chains and the Floer cohomology of Lagrangian torus fibers of Fano toric manifolds. In particular specializing to the formal parameter $T^{2π} = e^{-1}$, our computation verifies the folklore that FOOO's obstruction (co)chains correspond to the Landau-Ginzburg superpotentials under the mirror symmetry correspo…
Since its inception, Floer homology has been an important tool in low-dimensional topology. Floer theoretic invariants of $3$-manifolds tend to be either gauge theoretic or symplecto-geometric in nature, and there is a general philosophy that each gauge theoretic Floer homology should have a corresponding symplectic Floer homology and vice-versa. In this article, we construct a Lagrangian Floer invariant for any closed, oriented $3$-manifold $Y$ (called the symplectic instanton homology of $Y$ and denoted $\mathrm{SI}(Y)$) which is conjecturally equivalent to a Floer homology defined using a c…
Around 1988, Floer introduced two important theories: instanton Floer homology as invariants of 3-manifolds and Lagrangian Floer homology as invariants of pairs of Lagrangians in symplectic manifolds. Soon after that, Atiyah conjectured that the two theories should be related to each other and Lagrangian Floer homology of certain Lagrangians in the moduli space of flat connections on Riemann surfaces should recover instanton Floer homology. However, the space of flat connections on a Riemann surface is singular and the first step to address this conjecture is to make sense of Lagrangian Floer …
This is a mixture of survey article and research anouncement. We discuss Instanton Floer homology for 3 manifolds with boundary. We also discuss a categorification of the Lagrangian Floer theory using the unobstructed immersed Lagrangian correspondence as a morphism in the category of symplectic manifolds. During the year 1998-2012, those problems have been studied emphasising the ideas from analysis such as degeneration and adiabatic limit (Instanton Floer homology) and strip shrinking (Lagrangian correspondence). Recently we found that replacing those analytic approach by a combination of co…
In arXiv:1611.09927, we constructed a well-defined Lagrangian Floer invariant for any closed, oriented $3$-manifold $Y$ via the symplectic geometry of so-called traceless $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-character varieties. This invariant, $\mathrm{SI}(Y)$, which we refer to as the symplectic instanton homology of $Y$, was also shown to satisfy an exact triangle for Dehn surgeries on knots which is typical of Floer-theoretic invariants of $3$-manifolds. In this article, we demonstrate further structural properties of this symplectic instanton homology. For example, Floer theories are expected to roughly sati…
We study the problem of counting instantons with coassociative boundary condition in (almost) G_(2)-manifolds. This is analog to the open Gromov-Witten theory for counting holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary condition in Calabi-Yau manifolds. We explain its relationship with the Seiberg-Witten invariants for coassociative submanifolds.
