In the category of finitely generated modules over an artinian ring, we classify all the abelian exact subcategories closed under predecessors or, equivalently, all the split torsion pairs with torsion-free class closed under quotients.
In \cite{GT}, Gentle and Todorov proved that in an abelian category with enough projective objects, the extension subcategory of two covariantly finite subcategories is still covariantly finite. We give an counterexample to show that Gentle-Todorov's theorem may fail in arbitrary abelian categories; we also prove that a triangulated version of Gentle-Todorov's theorem holds; we make applications of Gentle-Todorov's theorem to obtain short proofs to a classical result by Ringel and a recent result by Krause and Solberg.
We study abelian localizations of triangulated categories induced by rigid contravariantly finite subcategories, and also triangulated structures on subfactor categories of triangulated categories. In this context we generalize recent results of Buan-Marsh and Iyama-Yoshino. We also extend basic results of Keller-Reiten concerning the Gorenstein and the Calabi-Yau property for categories arising from certain rigid, not necessarily cluster tilting, subcategories, as well as several results of the literature concerning the connections between 2-cluster tilting subcategories of triangulated categ…
We prove that some subquotient categories of one-sided triangulated categories are abelian. This unifies a result by Iyama-Yoshino in the case of triangulated categories and a result by Demonet-Liu in the case of exact categories.
In this paper, we introduce the atom spectrum of an abelian category as a topological space consisting of all the equivalence classes of monoform objects. In terms of the atom spectrum, we give a classification of Serre subcategories of an arbitrary noetherian abelian category. Moreover we show that the atom spectrum of a locally noetherian Grothendieck category is homeomorphic to its Ziegler spectrum.
For a length abelian category, we show that all torsion-free classes can be classified by using only the information on bricks, including non functorially-finite ones. The idea is to consider the set of simple objects in a torsion-free class, which has the following property: it is a set of bricks where every non-zero map between them is an injection. We call such a set a monobrick. In this paper, we provide a uniform method to study torsion-free classes and wide subcategories via monobricks. We show that monobricks are in bijection with left Schur subcategories, which contains all subcategori…
We show that an abelian category can be exactly, fully faithfully embedded into a module category as the right perpendicular subcategory to a set of modules or module morphisms if and only if it is a locally presentable abelian category with a projective generator, or in other words, the category of models of an additive algebraic theory of possibly infinite bounded arity. This includes the categories of contramodules over topological rings and other examples. Various versions of the definition of the right perpendicular subcategory are considered, all leading to the same class of abelian cate…
Derived decompositions of abelian categories are introduced in internal terms of abelian subcategories to construct semi-orthogonal decompositions (or Bousfield localizations, or hereditary torsion pairs) in various derived categories of abelian categories. We give a sufficient condition for arbitrary abelian categories to have such derived decompositions and show that it is also necessary for abelian categories with enough projectives and injectives. For bounded derived categories, we describe which semi-orthogonal decompositions are determined by derived decompositions. The necessary and suf…
This paper introduces the concept of the dimension of a triangulated category with respect to a fixed full subcategory. For the bounded derived category of an abelian category, upper bounds of the dimension with respect to a contravariantly finite subcategory and a resolving subcategory are given. Our methods not only recover some known results on the dimensions of derived categories in the sense of Rouquier, but also apply to various commutative and non-commutative noetherian rings.
We describe a general framework for prime, completely prime, semiprime, and primitive ideals of an abelian 2-category. This provides a noncommutative version of Balmer's prime spectrum of a tensor triangulated category. These notions are based on containment conditions in terms of thick subcategories of an abelian category and thick ideals of an abelian 2-category. We prove categorical analogs of the main properties of noncommutative prime spectra. Similar notions, starting with Serre subcategories of an abelian category and Serre ideals of an abelian 2-category, are developed. They are linked…
The main theme of this paper is to study $τ$-tilting subcategories in an abelian category $\mathscr{A}$ with enough projective objects. We introduce the notion of $τ$-cotorsion torsion triples and show a bijection between the collection of $τ$-cotorsion torsion triples in $\mathscr{A}$ and the collection of $τ$-tilting subcategories of $\mathscr{A}$, generalizing the bijection by Bauer, Botnan, Oppermann and Steen between the collection of cotorsion torsion triples and the collection of tilting subcategories of $\mathscr{A}$. General definitions and results are exemplified using persistent mod…
In an abelian category $\mathscr{A}$ with small ${\rm Ext}$ groups, we show that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between any two of the following: balanced pairs, subfunctors $\mathcal{F}$ of ${\rm Ext}^{1}_{\mathscr{A}}(-,-)$ such that $\mathscr{A}$ has enough $\mathcal{F}$-projectives and enough $\mathcal{F}$-injectives and Quillen exact structures $\mathcal{E}$ with enough $\mathcal{E}$-projectives and enough $\mathcal{E}$-injectives. In this case, we get a strengthened version of the translation of the Wakamatsu lemma to the exact context, and also prove that subcategories which a…
In this paper, we classify certain subcategories of modules over a ring R. A wide subcategory of R-modules is an Abelian subcategory of R-Mod that is closed under extensions. We give a complete classification of wide subcategories of finitely presented modules when R is a quotient of a regular commutative coherent ring by a finitely generated ideal. This includes all finitely presented algebras over a principal ideal domain, as well as polynomial rings on infinitely many variable over a PID. The classification is in terms of subsets of Spec R, and depends heavily on Thomason's classification o…
We introduce the notion of balanced pair of additive subcategories in an abelian category. We give sufficient conditions under which the balanced pair of subcategories gives rise to equivalent homotopy categories of complexes. As an application, we prove that for a left-Gorenstein ring, there exists a triangle-equivalence between the homotopy category of its Gorenstein projective modules and the homotopy category of its Gorenstein injective modules, which restricts to a triangle-equivalence between the homotopy category of projective modules and the homotopy category of injective modules. In t…
We introduce the extension groups between atoms in an abelian category. For a locally noetherian Grothendieck category, the localizing subcategories closed under injective envelopes are characterized in terms of those extension groups. We also introduce the virtual duals of the extension groups between atoms to measure the global dimension of the category. A new topological property of atom spectra is revealed and it is used to relate the projective dimensions of atoms with the Krull-Gabriel dimensions. As a byproduct of the topological observation, we show that there exists a spectral space t…
In this note I take the opportunity to correct the last statement of Part I of same title and continue the study of uniform purity of epimorphisms in order to derive the main result, which states that--provided $R_R\in \langle\cal K\rangle$, equivalently, $\langle \cal L\rangle$ (the definable subcategory generated by $\cal L$) contains all absolutely pure left modules--every countably generated $\cal K$-Mittag-Leffler module in $\langle \cal L\rangle$ is a direct summand of a $\langle \cal L\rangle$-preenvelope of a union of an $\cal L$-pure $ω$-chain of finitely presented modules. In conclus…
We mainly investigate abelian quotients of the categories of short exact sequences. The natural framework to consider the question is via identifying quotients of morphism categories as modules categories. These ideas not only can be used to recover the abelian quotients produced by cluster-tilting subcategories of both exact categories and triangulated categories, but also can be used to reach our goal. Let $(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{E})$ be an exact category. We denote by $\mathcal{E}(\mathcal{C})$ the category of bounded complexes whose objects are given by short exact sequences in $\mathcal{E}…
We formulate a version of Beck's monadicity theorem for abelian categories, which is applied to the equivariantization of abelian categories with respect to a finite group action. We prove that the equivariantization is compatible with the construction of quotient abelian categories by Serre subcategories. We prove that the equivariantization of the graded module category over a graded ring is equivalent to the graded module category over the same ring but with a different grading. We deduce from these results two equivalences between the category of (equivariant) coherent sheaves on a weighte…
We describe all possible universal localisations of a hereditary ring in terms of suitable full subcategories of the category of finitely presented modules. For these universal localisations we then identify the category of finitely presented bound modules over the universal localisation as being equivalent to a certain full subcategory of the category of finitely presented bound modules over the original ring. We also describe the abelian monoid of finitely generated projective modules over the universal localisation.
We study (relative) K-Mittag-Leffler modules, with emphasis on the class K of absolutely pure modules. A final goal is to describe the K-Mittag-Leffler abelian groups as those that are, modulo their torsion part, aleph_1-free, Cor.6.12. Several more general results of independent interest are derived on the way. In particular, every flat K-Mittag-Leffler module (for K as before) is Mittag-Leffler, Thm.3.9. A question about the definable subcategories generated by the divisible modules and the torsion-free modules, resp., has been left open, Quest.4.6.
We consider an arbitrary Abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ and a subcategory $\mathcal{T}$ closed under extensions and direct summands, and characterize those $\mathcal{T}$ that are (semi-)special preenveloping in $\mathcal{A}$; as a byproduct, we generalize to this setting several classical results for categories of modules. For instance, we get that the special preenveloping subcategories $\mathcal{T}$ of $\mathcal{A}$ closed under extensions and direct summands are precisely those for which $(_{}^{\perp_1}\mathcal{T},\mathcal{T})$ is a right complete cotorsion pair, where $_{}^{\perp_1}\mathca…
We show that an iteration of the procedure used to define the Gorenstein projective modules over a commutative ring $R$ yields exactly the Gorenstein projective modules. Specifically, given an exact sequence of Gorenstein projective $R$-modules $G=...\xra{\partial^G_2}G_1\xra{\partial^G_1}G_0\xra{\partial^G_0} ...$ such that the complexes $\Hom_R(G,H)$ and $\Hom_R(H,G)$ are exact for each Gorenstein projective $R$-module $H$, the module $\coker(\partial^G_1)$ is Gorenstein projective. The proof of this result hinges upon our analysis of Gorenstein subcategories of abelian categories.
