Nonintersecting lattice paths on the cylinder

We show how a formula concerning ``vicious walkers'' (which basically are nonintersecting lattice paths) on the cylinder given by P.J. Forrester can be proved and generalized by using the Lindström--Gessel--Viennot method, after having things set up in the right way. We apply the corresponding results to the (thermodynamic limit of the) free energy of the ``lock step model of vicious walkers'', thus completing (and in one instance correcting) the work of Forrester . Moreover, we also show how a related formula given by I. Gessel and C. Krattenthaler can be obtained from the same ``point of view''.

GCD matrices, posets, and nonintersecting paths

We show that with any finite partially ordered set one can associate a matrix whose determinant factors nicely. As corollaries, we obtain a number of results in the literature about GCD matrices and their relatives. Our main theorem is proved combinatorially using nonintersecting paths in a directed graph.

Pfaffians and nonintersecting paths in graphs with cycles: Grassmann algebra methods

After recalling the definition of Grassmann algebra and elements of Grassmann--Berezin calculus, we use the expression of Pfaffians as Grassmann integrals to generalize a series of formulas relating generating functions of paths in digraphs to Pfaffians. We start with the celebrated Lindström-Gessel-Viennot formula, which we derive in the general case of a graph with cycles. Elliptic enumeration of nonintersecting lattice paths

We enumerate lattice paths in the planar integer lattice consisting of positively directed unit vertical and horizontal steps with respect to a specific elliptic weight function. The elliptic generating function of paths from a given starting point to a given end point evaluates to an elliptic generalization of the binomial coefficient. Convolution gives an identity equivalent to Frenkel and Turaev's 10-V-9 summation. Exact distribution of the maximal height of p vicious walkers

Using path integral techniques, we compute exactly the distribution of the maximal height H_p of p nonintersecting Brownian walkers over a unit time interval in one dimension, both for excursions (p-watermelons with a wall) and bridges (p-watermelons without a wall), for all integer p\ge 1. For large p, we show that < H_p > \sim \sqrt{2p} (excursions) whereas < H_p > \sim \sqrt{p} (bridges). A determinantal formula for the Hilbert series of one-sided ladder determinantal rings

We give a formula that expresses the Hilbert series of one-sided ladder determinantal rings, up to a trivial factor, in form of a determinant. This allows the convenient computation of these Hilbert series. The formula follows from a determinantal formula for a generating function for families of nonintersecting lattice paths that stay inside a one-sided ladder-shaped region, in which the paths are counted with respect to turns.

Determinants of grids, tori, cylinders and Möbius ladders

Recently, Bieñ [A. Bieñ, The problem of singularity for planar grids, Discrete Math. 311 (2011), 921--931] obtained a recursive formula for the determinant of a grid. Also, recently, Pragel [D. Pragel, Determinants of box products of paths, Discrete Math. 312 (2012), 1844--1847], independently, obtained an explicit formula for this determinant. In this paper, we give a short proof for this problem. Furthermore, applying the same technique, we get explicit formulas for the determinant of a torus, a cylinder, and a Möbius ladder.

Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers

We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model.
