The article is devoted to investigation of classes of functions monotone as functions on general $C^*$-algebras that are not necessarily the $C^*$-algebras of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space as it is in classical case of matrix and operator monotone functions. We show that for general $C^*$-algebras the classes of monotone functions coincide with the standard classes of matrix and operator monotone functions. For every class we give exact characterization of $C^*$-algebras that have this class of monotone functions, providing at the same time a monotonicity characterization of subhomogeneous $C^*$-algebras. We use this characterization to generalize one function based monotonicity conditions for commutativity of a $C^*$-algebra, to one function based monotonicity conditions for subhomogeneity. As a $C^*$-algebraic counterpart of standard matrix and operator monotone scaling, we investigate, by means of projective $C^*$-algebras and relation lifting, the existence of $C^*$-subalgebras of a given monotonicity class.
The concrete monotone $C^*$-algebra, that is the (unital) $C^*$-algebra generated by monotone independent algebraic random variables of Bernoulli type, is characterized abstractly in terms of generators and relations and is shown to be UHF. Moreover, its Bratteli diagram is explicitly given, which allows for the computation of its $K$-theory.
A synaptic algebra is a common generalization of several ordered algebraic structures based on algebras of self-adjoint operators, including the self-adjoint part of an AW*-algebra. In this paper we prove that a synaptic algebra A has the monotone square property, i.e., if a and b are positive elements, then if a is less or equal than b, then the square root of a is less or equal than the square root of b.
We investigate operator-valued monotone independence, a noncommutative version of independence for conditional expectation. First we introduce operator-valued monotone cumulants to clarify the whole theory and show the moment-cumulant formula. As an application, one can obtain an easy proof of Central Limit Theorem for operator-valued case. Moreover, we prove a generalization of Muraki's formula for the sum of independent random variables and a relation between generating functions of moments and cumulants.
We introduce the notion of operator-valued infinitesimal (OVI) independence for the Boolean and monotone cases. Then show that OVI Boolean (resp. monotone) independence is equivalent to the operator-valued Boolean (resp. monotone) independence over an algebra of $2\times 2$ upper triangular matrices. Moreover, we derive formulas to obtain the OVI Boolean (resp. monotone) additive convolution by reducing it to the operator-valued case. We also define OVI Boolean and monotone cumulants and study its basic properties. Moreover, for each notion of OVI independence, we construct the corresponding O…
For an operator monotone function $f(t)$ on the positive real line, we show the operator monotonicity of the type of the functions $(t-a)(t-b)/(f(t)-f(a))(f^\sharp(t)-f^\sharp(b))$.
We prove that all finite joint distributions of creation and annihilation operators in Monotone and anti-Monotone Fock spaces can be realized as Quantum Central Limit of certain operators on a $C^*$-algebra, at least when the test functions are Riemann integrable. Namely, the approximation is given by weighted sequences of creators and annihilators in discrete monotone $C^*$-algebras, the weight being the above cited test functions. The construction is then generalized to processes by an invariance principle.
We compute the tail algebras of exchangeable monotone stochastic processes. This allows us to prove the analogue of de Finetti's theorem for this type of processes. In addition, since the vacuum state on the $q$-deformed $C^*$-algebra is the only exchangeable state when $|q|<1$, we draw our attention to its tail algebra, which turns out to obey a zero-one law.
Recently the behavior of operator monotone functions on unbounded intervals with respect to the relation of strictly positivity has been investigated. In this paper we deeply study such behavior not only for operator monotone functions but also for operator convex functions on bounded intervals. More precisely, we prove that if $f$ is a nonlinear operator convex function on a bounded interval $(a,b)$ and $A, B$ are bounded linear operators acting on a Hilbert space with spectra in $(a,b)$ and $A-B$ is invertible, then $sf(A)+(1-s)f(B)>f(sA+(1-s)B)$. A short proof for a similar known result con…
We provide Berry-Esseen bounds for sums of operator-valued Boolean and monotone independent variables, in terms of the first moments of the summands. Our bounds are on the level of Cauchy transforms as well as the Lévy distance. As applications, we obtain quantitative bounds for the corresponding CLTs, provide a quantitative "fourth moment theorem" for monotone independent random variables including the operator-valued case, and generalize the results by Hao and Popa on matrices with Boolean entries. Our approach relies on a Lindeberg method that we develop for sums of Boolean/monotone indepen…
We propose a notion of operator monotonicity for functions of several variables, which extends the well known notion of operator monotonicity for functions of only one variable. The notion is chosen such that a fundamental relationship between operator convexity and operator monotonicity for functions of one variable is extended also to functions of several variables.
If $σ$ is a symmetric mean and $f$ is an operator monotone function on $[0, \infty)$, then $$f(2(A^{-1}+B^{-1})^{-1})\le f(AσB)\le f((A+B)/2).$$ Conversely, Ando and Hiai showed that if $f$ is a function that satisfies either one of these inequalities for all positive operators $A$ and $B$ and a symmetric mean different than the arithmetic and the harmonic mean, then the function is operator monotone. In this paper, we show that the arithmetic and the harmonic means can be replaced by the geometric mean to obtain similar characterizations. Moreover, we give characterizations of operator monoto…
The paper gives an operator algebras model for the conditional monotone independence, introduced by T. Hasebe. The construction is used to prove an embedding result for the N. Muraki's monotone product of C*-algebras. Also, the formulas from the definition of conditional monotone independence are used to define the monotone product of maps which is shown to preserve complete positivity, a similar to the results from the case of free products.
We prove that the functions t -> (t^q-1)(t^p-1)^{-1} are operator monotone in the positive half-axis for 0 < p < q < 1, and we calculate the two associated canonical representation formulae. The result is used to find new monotone metrics (quantum Fisher information) on the state space of quantum systems.
We prove that there is a bijection between the families of regular and non-regular operator monotone functions. As an application we give a new proof of the operator monotonicity of a certain class of functions related to Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information.
In a 1999 paper, Bercovici and Pata showed that a natural bijection between the classically, free and Boolean infinitely divisible measures held at the level of limit theorems of triangular arrays. This result was extended to include monotone convolution by the authors. In recent years, operator-valued versions of free, Boolean and monotone probability have also been developed. Belinschi, Popa and Vinnikov showed that the Bercovici-Pata bijection holds for the operator-valued versions of free and Boolean probability. In this article, we extend the bijection to include monotone probability theo…
We investigate the spectrum for partial sums of m position (or gaussian) operators on monotone Fock space based on $\ell^2(\mathbb{N})$. In the basic case of the first consecutive operators, we prove it coincides with the support of the vacuum distribution. Thus, the right endpoint of the support gives their norm. In the general case, we get the last property for norm still holds. As the single position operator has the vacuum symmetric Bernoulli law, and the whole of them is a monotone independent family of random variables, the vacuum distribution for partial sums of $n$ operators can be see…
In this paper we initiate the study of real operator monotonicity for functions of tuples of operators, which are multivariate structured maps with a functional calculus called free functions that preserve the order between real parts (or Hermitian parts) of bounded linear Hilbert space operators. We completely characterize such functions on open convex free domains in terms of ordinary operator monotone free functions on self-adjoint domains. Further assuming the more stringent free holomorphicity, we prove that all such functions are affine linear with completely positive nonconstant part. T…
Let S be the Stone space of a complete, non-atomic Boolean algebra. Let G be a countably infinite group of homeomorphisms of S. Let the action of G on S have a free dense orbit. Then we prove that, on a generic subset of S, the orbit equivalence relation coming from this action can also be obtained as an action of the (abelian) Dyadic Group. For the special case where the complete Boolean algebra is the algebra of regular open subsets of the real numbers, this reduces to a theorem of Sullivan-Weiss-Wright. By applying our new dynamical results we improve on an earlier paper by constructing a f…
