We consider the space of geodesic laminations on a surface, endowed with the Hausdorff metric d_H and with a variation of this metric called the d_log metric. We compute and/or estimate the Hausdorff dimensions of these two metrics. We also relate these two metrics to another metric which is combinatorially defined in terms of train tracks.
We prove that for any orientable connected surface of finite type which is not a a sphere with at most four punctures or a torus with at most two punctures, any homeomorphism of the space of geodesic laminations of this surface, equipped with the Thurston topology, is induced by a homeomorphism of the surface.
We continue our investigation of the space of geodesic laminations on a surface, endowed with the Hausdorff topology. We determine the topology of this space for the once-punctured torus and the 4-times-punctured sphere. For these two surfaces, we also compute the Hausdorff dimension of the space of geodesic laminations, when it is endowed with the natural metric which, for small distances, is -1 over the logarithm of the Hausdorff metric. The key ingredient is an estimate of the Hausdorff metric between two simple closed geodesics in terms of their respective slopes.
For a closed surface S, the Hitchin component Hit_n(S) is a preferred component of the character variety consisting of group homomorphisms from the fundamental group pi_1(S) to the Lie group PSL_n(R). We construct a parametrization of the Hitchin component that is well-adapted to a maximal geodesic lamination on the surface. This is a natural extension of Thurston's parametrization of the Teichmueller space of S by shear coordinates associated to a maximal geodesic lamination, corresponding to the case n=2. However, significantly new ideas are needed in this higher dimensional case. The articl…
We investigate the distribution of lengths obtained by intersecting a random geodesic with a geodesic lamination. We give an explicit formula for the distribution for the case of a maximal lamination and show that the distribution is independent of the surface and lamination. We also show how the moments of the distribution are related to the Riemann zeta function.
We construct Weil-Petersson (WP) geodesic rays with minimal filling non-uniquely ergodic ending lamination which are recurrent to a compact subset of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. This construction shows that an analogue of the Masur's criterion for Teichmüller geodesics does not hold for WP geodesics.
Since their introduction by Thurston, measured geodesic laminations on hyperbolic surfaces occur in many contexts. In [Mor], we have introduced a notion of flat laminations on surfaces endowed with a half-translation structure (that is a singular flat surface with holonomy {+/-Id}, similar to geodesic laminations on hyperbolic surfaces. Here is a sequel to this article that aims at defining transverse measures on flat laminations similar to transverse measures on hyperbolic laminations, taking into account that two different leaves of a flat lamination may no longer be disjoint. One aim of thi…
We introduce an asymmetric distance function, which we call the `left Hausdorff distance function', on the space of geodesic laminations on a closed hyperbolic surface of genus at least 2. This distance is an asymmetric version of the Hausdorff distance between compact subsets of a metric space. We prove a rigidity result for the action of the extended mapping class group of the surface on the space of geodesic laminations equipped with the topology induced from this distance. More specifically, we prove that there is a natural homomorphism from the extended mapping class group into the group …
We give in this paper bounds for the Morse indices of a large class of simple geodesics on a surface with a generic metric. To our knowledge these bounds are the first that use only the generic hypothesis on the metric.
The Bratteli diagram is an infinite graph which reflects the structure of projections in a C*-algebra. We prove that every strictly ergodic unimodular Bratteli diagram of rank 2g+m-1 gives rise to a minimal geodesic lamination with the m-component principal region on a surface of genus g greater or equal to 1. The proof is based on the Morse theory of the recurrent geodesics on the hyperbolic surfaces.
We define an ending lamination for a Weil-Petersson geodesic ray. Despite the lack of a natural visual boundary for the Weil-Petersson metric, these ending laminations provide an effective boundary theory that encodes much of its asymptotic CAT(0) geometry. In particular, we prove an ending lamination theorem (Theorem 1.1) for the full-measure set of rays that recur to the thick part, and we show that the association of an ending lamination embeds asymptote classes of recurrent rays into the Gromov-boundary of the curve complex. As an application, we establish fundamentals of the topological d…
Given a measured lamination on a finite area hyperbolic surface we consider a natural measure Mon the real line obtained by taking the push-forward of the volume measure of the unit tangent bundle of the surface under an intersection function associated with the lamination. We show that the measure M gives summation identities for the Rogers dilogarithm function on the moduli space of a surface.
The space ML(F) of measured geodesic laminations on a given closed hyperbolic surface F has a canonical linear structure arising in fact from different sources in 2-dimensional hyperbolic (earthquake theory) or complex projective (grafting) geometry as well as in (2+1) Lorentzian one (globally hyperbolic spacetimes of constant curvature). We investigate this linear structure, by showing in particular how heavily it depends on the geometric structure of F, whle to many other extens ML(F) depends only on the topology of F. This is already manifest when we describe in geometric terms the sum of t…
Let $X$ be an infinite Riemann surface equipped with its conformal hyperbolic metric such that the action of the covering group $π_1(X)$ on $\tilde{X}$ is of the first kind-i.e., the surface $X$ is equal to its convex core. We first prove that any geodesic lamination on $X$ is nowhere dense. Given a fixed geodesic pants decomposition of $X$ we define a family of train tracks on $X$ such that any geodesic lamination of $X$ is weakly carried by at least one train track. Then we parametrize all measured laminations on $X$ carried by a train track by the corresponding edge weight systems on the tr…
Given a measured geodesic lamination on a hyperbolic surface, grafting the surface along multiples of the lamination defines a path in Teichmuller space, called the grafting ray. We show that every grafting ray, after reparametrization, is a Teichmuller quasi-geodesic and stays in a bounded neighborhood of a Teichmuller geodesic. As part of our approach, we show that grafting rays have controlled dependence on the starting point. That is, for any measured geodesic lamination Lambda, the map of Teichmuller space which is defined by grafting along Lambda is L-Lipschitz with respect to the Teichm…
In this paper we construct examples of Weil-Petersson geodesics with nonminimal ending laminations which have 1-dimensional limit sets in the Thurston compactification of Teichmüller space.
We extend the unpublished work of M. Handel and R. Miller on the classification, up to isotopy, of endperiodic automorphisms of surfaces. We give the Handel-Miller construction of the geodesic laminations, give an axiomatic theory for pseudo-geodesic lamaniations, show the geodesic laminations satisfy the axioms, and prove that paeudo-geodesic laminations satisfying our axioms are ambiently isotopic to the geodesic laminations. The axiomatic approach allows us to show that the given endperiodic automorphism is isotopic to a smooth endperiodic automorphism preserving smooth laminations ambientl…
We characterize which cobounded quasigeodesics in the Teichmueller space T of a closed surface are at bounded distance from a geodesic. More generally, given a cobounded lipschitz path gamma in T, we show that gamma is a quasigeodesic with finite Hausdorff distance from some geodesic if and only if the canonical hyperbolic plane bundle over gamma is a hyperbolic metric space. As an application, for complete hyperbolic 3-manifolds N with finitely generated, freely indecomposable fundamental group and with bounded geometry, we give a new construction of model geometries for the geometrically inf…
Thurston's boundary to the universal Teichmüller space $T(\mathbb{D})$ is the space $PML_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$ of projective bounded measured laminations of $\mathbb{D}$. A geodesic ray in $T(\mathbb{D})$ is of Teichmüller type if it shrinks vertical foliation of an integrable holomorphic quadratic differential. In a prior work we established that each Teichmüller geodesic ray limits to a multiple (by the reciprocal of the length of the leaves) of vertical foliation of the quadratic differential. Certain non-integrable holomorphic quadratic differential induce geodesic rays and we consider their …
Let S be a non-exceptional oriented surface of finite type. We classify all Radon measures on the space of measured geodesic laminations for S which are invariant under the mapping class group.
We study Weil-Petersson (WP) geodesics with narrow end invariant and develop techniques to control length-functions and twist parameters along them and prescribe their itinerary in the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. This class of geodesics is rich enough to provide for examples of closed WP geodesics in the thin part of the moduli space, as well as divergent WP geodesic rays with minimal filling ending lamination. Some ingredients of independent interest are the following: A strength version of Wolpert's Geodesic Limit Theorem proved in Sec.4. The stability of hierarchy resolution paths bet…
We show that the strong asymptotic class of Weil-Petersson (WP) geodesics with narrow end invariant and bounded annular coefficients is determined by the forward ending lamination. This generalizes the Recurrent Ending Lamination Theorem of Brock-Masur-Minsky. As an application we provide a symbolic condition for divergence of WP geodesic rays in the moduli space.
We show that the length function of a measured geodesic lamination is convex in Thurston's shear coordinates over Teichmüller space and strictly convex for generic laminations. We give some consequences of this result in the context of Thurston's asymmetric metric on Teichmüller space.
Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a measured geodesic lamination on a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. Assuming $\mathcal{L}$ is not a multicurve, our main result establishes the existence of a geodesic ray which has finite intersection number with $\mathcal{L}$ but is not asymptotic to any leaf of $\mathcal{L}$ nor eventually disjoint from $\mathcal{L}$. In fact, we show that the endpoints of such rays, when lifted to the universal cover $\mathbb{H}^2$ of $X$, give an uncountable set $h\tilde{\mathcal{L}}\subset S^1$ (called the halo of $\tilde{\mathcal{L}}$), which is disjoint from the endpoin…
A topological invariant of the geodesic laminations on a modular surface is constructed. The invariant has a continuous part (the tail of a continued fraction) and a combinatorial part (the singularity data). It is shown, that the invariant is complete, i.e. the geodesic lamination can be recovered from the invariant. The continuous part of the invariant has geometric meaning of a slope of lamination on the surface.
Let $S$ be any closed hyperbolic surface and let $λ$ be a maximal geodesic lamination on $S$. The amount of bending of an abstract pleated surface (homeomorphic to $S$) with the pleating locus $λ$ is completely determined by an $(\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z})$-valued finitely additive transverse cocycle $β$ to the geodesic lamination $λ$. We give a sufficient condition on $β$ such that the corresponding pleating map $\tilde{f}_β:\mathbb{H}^2\to\mathbb{H}^3$ induces a quasiFuchsian representation of the surface group $π_1(S)$. Our condition is genus independent.
In this paper we prove that the limit set of any Weil-Petersson geodesic ray with uniquely ergodic ending lamination is a single point in the Thurston compactification of Teichmüller space. On the other hand, we construct examples of Weil-Petersson geodesics with minimal nonuniquely ergodic ending laminations and limit set a circle in the Thurston compactification.
A celebrated result of Mirzakhani states that, if $(S,m)$ is a finite area \emph{orientable} hyperbolic surface, then the number of simple closed geodesics of length less than $L$ on $(S,m)$ is asymptotically equivalent to a positive constant times $L^{\dim\mathcal{ML}(S)}$, where $\mathcal{ML}(S)$ denotes the space of measured laminations on $S$. We observed on some explicit examples that this result does not hold for \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surfaces. The aim of this article is to explain this surprising phenomenon. Let $(S,m)$ be a finite area \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surface.…
We prove that a transversely equicontinuous minimal lamination on a locally compact metric space $Z$ has a transversely invariant Radon measure. Moreover if the space $Z$ is compact, then the tranversely invariant Radon measure is shown to be unique up to a scaling.
The Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}(Σ)$ of a surface $Σ$ is equipped with Thurston's asymmetric metric. Stretch lines are oriented geodesics for this metric on $\mathcal{T}(Σ)$. We give the asymptotic behavior of the lengths of the measured geodesic laminations as one follows a stretch line in the positive direction.
We characterize geometrically the Lyapunov exponents of a cocycle (of arbitrary rank) with respect to a harmonic current defined on a hyperbolic Riemann surface lamination. Our characterizations are formulated in terms of the expansion rates of the cocycle along geodesic rays.
The loop graph of an infinite type surface is an infinite diameter hyperbolic graph first studied in detail by Juliette Bavard. An important open problem in the study of infinite type surfaces is to describe the boundary of the loop graph as a space of geodesic laminations. We approach this problem by constructing the first examples of 2-filling rays on infinite type surfaces. Such rays accumulate onto geodesic laminations which are in some sense filling, but without strong enough properties to correspond to points in the boundary of the loop graph. We give multiple constructions using both a …
Let $X_0$ be a complete borderless infinite area hyperbolic surface. We introduce Thurston's boundary to the Teichmüller space $T(X_0)$ of the surface $X_0$ using Liouville (geodesic) currents. Thurston's boundary to $T(X_0)$ is identified with the space $PML_{bdd}(X_0)$ of projective bounded measured laminations on $X_0$ which naturally extends Thurston's result for closed surfaces. Moreover, the quasiconformal mapping class group $MCG_{qc}(X_0)$ acts continuously on the closure $T(X_0)\cup PML_{bdd}(X_0)$.
Given an Anosov representation $ρ\colon π_1(S) \to \PSL_{n}(\mathbb{R})$ and a maximal geodesic lamination $λ$ in a surface $S$, we construct shear deformations along the leaves of the geodesic lamination $λ$ endowed with a certain flag decoration, that is provided by the associated flag curve $\mathcal{F}_ρ\colon \Sinf \to \mathrm{Flag}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ of the Anosov representation $ρ$; these deformations generalize to Labourie's Anosov representations Thurston's cataclysms for hyperbolic structures on surfaces. A cataclysm is parametrized by a transverse $n$--twisted cocycle for the orientatio…
Let $λ_-$ and $λ_+$ be two bounded measured laminations on the hyperbolic disk $\mathbb H^2$, which "strongly fill" (definition below). We consider the left earthquakes along $λ_-$ and $λ_+$, considered as maps from the universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$ to itself, and we prove that the composition of those left earthquakes has a fixed point. The proof uses anti-de Sitter geometry. Given a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism $u:{\mathbb RP}^1\to {\mathbb RP}^1$, the boundary of the convex hull in $AdS^3$ of its graph in ${\mathbb RP}^1\times{\mathbb RP}^1\simeq \partial AdS^3$ is the disjoint …
Let $S$ be a compact, connected, oriented surface, possibly with boundary, of negative Euler characteristic. In this article we extend Lindenstrauss-Mirzakhani's and Hamenstädt's classification of locally finite mapping class group invariant ergodic measures on the space of measured laminations $\mathcal{M}\mathcal{L}(S)$ to the space of geodesic currents $\mathcal{C}(S)$, and we discuss the homogeneous case. Moreover, we extend Lindenstrauss-Mirzakhani's classification of orbit closures to $\mathcal{C}(S)$. Our argument relies on their results and on the decomposition of a current into a sum …
Marden and Strebel established the Heights Theorem for integrable holomorphic quadratic differentials on parabolic Riemann surfaces. We extends the validity of the Heights Theorem to all surfaces whose fundamental group is of the first kind. In fact, we establish a more general result: the {\it horizontal} map which assigns to each integrable holomorphic quadratic differential a measured lamination obtained by straightening the horizontal trajectories of the quadratic differential is injective for an arbitrary Riemann surface with a conformal hyperbolic metric. This was established by Strebel …
For any 3-manifold M and any nonnegative integer g, we give here examples of metrics on M each of which has a sequence of embedded minimal surfaces of genus g and without Morse index bounds. On any spherical space form S^3/Gamma we construct such a metric with positive scalar curvature. More generally we construct such a metric with Scal>0 (and such surfaces) on any 3-manifold which carries a metric with Scal>0. In all but one of these examples the Hausdorff limit will be a singular minimal lamination. The singularities being in each case exactly two points lying on a closed leaf (the leaf is …
Thurston's boundary to the universal Teichmüller space $T(\mathbb{H})$ is the set of asymptotic rays to the embedding of $T(\mathbb{H})$ in the space of geodesic currents; the boundary is identified with the projective bounded measured laminations $PML_{bdd}(\mathbb{H})$ of $\mathbb{H}$. We prove that each Teichmüller geodesic ray in $T(\mathbb{H})$ has a unique limit point in Thurston's boundary to $T(\mathbb{H})$ unlike in the case of closed surfaces.
Let $X$ be an infinite geodesically complete hyperbolic surface which can be decomposed into geodesic pairs of pants. We introduce Thurston's boundary to the Teichmüller space $T(X)$ of the surface $X$ using the length spectrum analogous to Thurston's construction for finite surfaces. Thurston's boundary using the length spectrum of $X$ is a "closure" of projective bounded measured laminations $PML_{bdd} (X)$, and it coincides with $PML_{bdd}(X)$ when $X$ can be decomposed into a countable union of geodesic pairs of pants whose boundary geodesics $\{α_n\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ have lengths pinched…
Let S be a closed surface of genus at least 2, and consider two measured geodesic laminations that fill S. Right earthquakes along these laminations are diffeomorphisms of the Teichmüller space of S. We prove that the composition of these earthquakes has a fixed point in the Teichmüller space. Another way to state this result is that it is possible to prescribe any two measured laminations that fill a surface as the upper and lower measured bending laminations of the convex core of a globally hyperbolic AdS manifold. The proof uses some estimates from the geometry of those AdS manifolds.
Given a sequence of curves on a surface, we provide conditions which ensure that (1) the sequence is an infinite quasi-geodesic in the curve complex, (2) the limit in the Gromov boundary is represented by a nonuniquely ergodic ending lamination, and (3) the sequence divides into a finite set of subsequences, each of which projectively converges to one of the ergodic measures on the ending lamination. The conditions are sufficiently robust, allowing us to construct sequences on a closed surface of genus $g$ for which the space of measures has the maximal dimension $3g-3$, for example. We also s…
A measured laminations on the universal hyperbolic solenoid $§$ is, by our definition, a leafwise measured lamination with appropriate continuity for the transverse variations. An earthquakes on theuniversal hyperbolic solenoid $§$ is uniquely determined by a measured lamination on $§$; it is a leafwise earthquake with the leafwise earthquake measure equal to the leafwise measured lamination. Leafwise earthquakes fit together to produce a new hyperbolic metric on $§$ which is transversely continuous and we show that any two hyperbolic metrics on $§$ are connected by an earthquake. We also esta…
For two measured laminations $ν^+$ and $ν^-$ that fill up a hyperbolizable surface $S$ and for $t \in (-\infty, \infty)$, let $L_t$ be the unique hyperbolic surface that minimizes the length function $e^t l(ν^+) + e^{-t} l(ν^-)$ on Teichmuller space. We characterize the curves that are short in $L_t$ and estimate their lengths. We find that the short curves coincide with the curves that are short in the surface $G_t$ on the Teichmuller geodesic whose horizontal and vertical foliations are respectively, $e^t ν^+$ and $e^{-t} ν^-$. By deriving additional information about the twists of $ν^+$ and…
We prove a compactness theorem for embedded measured hyperbolic Riemann surface laminations in a compact almost complex manifold $(X, J)$. To prove compactness result, we show that there is a suitable topology on the space of measured Riemann surface laminations induced by Levy-Prokhorov metric. As an application of the compactness theorem, we show that given a biholomorphism of $ϕ$ of a closed complex manifold $X$, some power $ϕ^k $ ($k>0$) fixes a measured Riemann surface lamination in $X$.
We relate ergodic-theoretic properties of a very small tree or lamination to the behavior of folding and unfolding paths in Outer space that approximate it, and we obtain a criterion for unique ergodicity in both cases. Our main result is that non-unique ergodicity gives rise to a transverse decomposition of the folding/unfolding path. It follows that non-unique ergodicity leads to distortion when projecting to the complex of free factors, and we give two applications of this fact. First, we show that if a subgroup $H$ of $Out(\FN)$ quasi-isometrically embeds into the complex of free factors v…
This paper develops a theory of Lipschitz comparisons of hyperbolic surfaces analogous to the theory of quasi-conformal comparisons. Extremal Lipschitz maps (minimal stretch maps) and geodesics for the `Lipschitz metric' are constructed. The extremal Lipschitz constant equals the maximum ratio of lengths of measured laminations, which is attained with probability one on a simple closed curve. Cataclysms are introduced, generalizing earthquakes by permitting more violent shearing in both directions along a fault. Cataclysms provide useful coordinates for Teichmuller space that are convenient fo…
