A 2-group is a "categorified" version of a group, in which the underlying set G has been replaced by a category and the multiplication map has been replaced by a functor. Various versions of this notion have already been explored; our goal here is to provide a detailed introduction to two, which we call "weak" and "coherent" 2-groups. A weak 2-group is a weak monoidal category in which every morphism has an inverse and every object x has a "weak inverse": an object y such that x tensor y and y tensor x are isomorphic to 1. A coherent 2-group is a weak 2-group in which every object x is equipped with a specified weak inverse x* and isomorphisms i_x: 1 -> x tensor x* and e_x: x* tensor x -> 1 forming an adjunction. We describe 2-categories of weak and coherent 2-groups and an "improvement" 2-functor that turns weak 2-groups into coherent ones, and prove that this 2-functor is a 2-equivalence of 2-categories. We internalize the concept of coherent 2-group, which gives a quick way to define Lie 2-groups. We give a tour of examples, including the "fundamental 2-group" of a space and various Lie 2-groups. We also explain how coherent 2-groups can be classified in terms of 3rd cohomology classes in group cohomology. Finally, using this classification, we construct for any connected and simply-connected compact simple Lie group G a family of 2-groups G_hbar (for integral values of hbar) having G as its group of objects and U(1) as the group of automorphisms of its identity object. These 2-groups are built using Chern-Simons theory, and are closely related to the Lie 2-algebras g_hbar (for real hbar) described in a companion paper.
We define Lie 3-algebras and prove that these are in 1-to-1 correspondence with the 3-term Lie infinity algebras whose bilinear and trilinear maps vanish in degree (1,1) and in total degree 1, respectively. Further, we give an answer to a question of [Roy07] pertaining to the use of the nerve and normalization functors in the study of the relationship between categorified algebras and truncated sh algebras.
We construct level 1 basic representations of the quantized current algebras associated to higher genus algebraic curves using one free field. We also clarify the relation between the elliptic current algebras of the papers [EF] and [JKOS].
We classify finite-dimensional Hopf algebras whose coradical is isomorphic to the algebra of functions on S_3. We describe a new infinite family of Hopf algebras of dimension 72.
We investigate the general structure of the automorphism group and the Lie algebra of derivations of a finitely generated vertex operator algebra. The automorphism group is isomorphic to an algebraic group. Under natural assumptions, the derivation algebra has an invariant bilinear form and the ideal of inner derivations is nonsingular.
We give a quick method of constructing strong homotopy associative algebra, namely, the higher derived product construction. This method is associative analogue of classical higher derived bracket construction in the category of Loday algebras. We introduce a new type of algebra "Loday pair" which is noncommutative analogue of classical Leibniz pair. We study strong homotopy Loday pairs and the higher derived brackets on the Loday pairs.
We continue the study of twisted automorphisms of Hopf algebras started in "Twisted automorphisms of Hopf algebras". In this paper we concentrate on the group algebra case. We describe the group of twisted automorphisms of the group algebra of a group of order coprime to 6. The description turns out to be very similar to the one for the universal enveloping algebra given in "Twisted automorphisms of Hopf algebras".
We prove that finite groups have the same complex character tables iff the group algebras are twisted forms of each other as Drinfel'd quasi-bialgebras or iff there is non-associative bi-Galois algebra over these groups. The interpretations of class-preserving automorphisms and permutation representations with the same character in terms of Drinfel'd algebras are also given.
In this paper, we construct a universal C*-algebraic quantum group out of an algebraic one. We show that this universal C*-algebraic quantum group has the same rich structure as its reduced companion. This universal C*-algebraic quantum group also satifies an upcoming definition of Masuda, Nakagami & Woronowicz except for the possible non-faithfulness of the left Haar weight.
We discuss the higher dimensional generalizations of the Virasoro and Affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We present an explicit construction for a central extensions of the Lie Algebra $Map (X, \g)$ where $\g$ is a finite-dimensional Lie algebra and $X$ is a complex manifold that can be described as a "right" higher-dimensional generalization of $C^*$ from the point of view of a corresponding group action. The constructed algebras have most of the good properties of finite dimensional semi-simple Lie algebras and are a new class of generalized Kac-Moody algebras. These algebras have description in…
We determine the structure of Hopf algebra extensions of a group algebra by the cyclic group of order 2. We study the corepresentation theory of such Hopf algebras, which provide a generalization, at the Hopf algebra level, of the so called Tambara-Yamagami fusion categories. As a byproduct, we show that every semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension $<36$ is necessarily group-theoretical; thus 36 is the smallest possible dimension where a non group-theoretical example occurs.
Vertex algebras provide an axiomatic algebraic description of the operator product expansion (OPE) of chiral fields in 2-dimensional conformal field theory. Vertex Lie algebras (= Lie conformal algebras) encode the singular part of the OPE, or, equivalently, the commutators of chiral fields. We discuss generalizations of vertex algebras and vertex Lie algebras, which are relevant for higher-dimensional quantum field theory.
The $sl_N$-Onsager algebra has been introduced by Uglov and Ivanov in 1995. In this letter, a FRT presentation of the $sl_N$-Onsager algebra is given, its current algebra and commutative subalgebra are constructed. Certain quotients of the $sl_N$-Onsager algebra are then considered, which produce `classical' analogs of higher rank extensions of the Askey-Wilson algebra. As examples, the cases $N=3$ and $N=4$ are described in details.
Vertex algebras in higher dimensions provide an algebraic framework for investigating axiomatic quantum field theory with global conformal invariance. We develop further the theory of such vertex algebras by introducing formal calculus techniques and investigating the notion of polylocal fields. We derive a Jacobi identity which together with the vacuum axiom can be taken as an equivalent definition of vertex algebra.
For higher genus multi-point current algebras of Krichever-Novikov type associated to a finite-dimensional Lie algebra, local Lie algebra two-cocycles are studied. They yield as central extensions almost-graded higher genus affine Lie algebras. In case that the Lie algebra is reductive a complete classification is given. For a simple Lie algebra, like in the classical situation, there is up to equivalence and rescaling only one non-trivial almost-graded central extension. The classification is extended to the algebras of meromorphic differential operators of order less or equal one on the curr…
We expose a K-theoretic approach to study group C*-algebras and C*-algebraic compact quantum groups: 1. The conception of multidimensional geometric quantization and the index of group C*-algebras; 2. the entire homology of noncommutative de Rham currents and the noncommutative Chern characters, and their computation for C*-algebras of compact Lie groups and compact quantum groups.
We introduce a higher dimensional generalization of the affine Kac-Moody algebra using the language of factorization algebras. In particular, on any complex manifold there is a factorization algebra of "currents" associated to any Lie algebra. We classify local cocycles of these current algebras, and compare them to central extensions of higher affine algebras recently proposed by Faonte-Hennion-Kapranov. A central goal of this paper is to witness higher Kac-Moody algebras as symmetries of a class of holomorphic quantum field theories. In particular, we prove a generalization of the free field…
We describe $L_\infty$-algebras governing homotopy relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras and triangular $L_\infty$-bialgebras, and establish a map between them. Our formulas are based on a functorial approach to Voronov's higher derived brackets construction which is of independent interest.
It is shown that the non-trivial cocycles on simple Lie algebras may be used to introduce antisymmetric multibrackets which lead to higher-order Lie algebras, the definition of which is given. Their generalised Jacobi identities turn out to be satisfied by the antisymmetric tensors (or higher-order `structure constants') which characterise the Lie algebra cocycles. This analysis allows us to present a classification of the higher-order simple Lie algebras as well as a constructive procedure for them. Our results are synthesised by the introduction of a single, complete BRST operator associated…
