In this paper, we show that Goodwillie calculus, as applied to functors from stable homotopy to itself, interacts in striking ways with chromatic aspects of the stable category.
Localized at a fixed prime p, let T(n) be the telescope of a v_n self map of a finite S--module of type n. The Periodicity Theorem of Hopkins and Smith implies that the Bousfield localization functor associated to T(n) is independent of choices.
Goodwillie's general theory says that to any homotopy functor F from S--modules to S--modules, there is an associated tower under F, {P_dF}, such that F --> P_dF is the universal arrow to a d--excisive functor.
Our first theorem says that P_dF --> P_{d-1}F always admits a homotopy section after localization with respect to T(n) (and so also after localization with respect to Morava K--theory K(n)). Thus, after periodic localization, polynomial functors split as the product of their homogeneous factors.
This theorem follows from our second theorem which is equivalent to the following: for any finite group G, the Tate spectrum t_G(T(n)) is weakly contractible. This strengthens and extends previous theorems of Greenlees--Sadofsky, Hovey--Sadofsky, and Mahowald--Shick. The Periodicity Theorem is used in an essential way in our proof.
The connection between the two theorems is via a reformulation of a result of McCarthy on dual calculus.
We sketch a quick and dirty geometric approach to the Tate-Swan cohomology of equivariant spectra, illustrating it with conjectural applications to Atiyah-Segal $K$-theory of circle actions, and a possible geometric model for the topological cyclic homology of the sphere spectrum.
We give a method for computing factorization homology of $\oper{E}_n$-algebra using as an input an algebraic version of higher Hochschild homology due to Pirashvili. We then show how to compute higher Hochschild homology and cohomology when the algebra is étale in a sense that we make precise. As an application, we compute higher Hochschild cohomology of the Lubin-Tate ring spectrum.
We study a certain construction designed to bring together the following two topics: $i$) Dyer--Lashof-operations in negative Tate-cohomology, $ii$) the description of negative Tate-cohomology in terms of joins. It has the merit of making (some) sense in a more general context: where the loop-space of the space under study no longer has to be of compact homotopy-type. The exposition given here is a streamlined version of a previous version of mine, available here at the Arxiv.
We construct splittings of some completions of the Z/(p)-Tate cohomology of E(n) and some related spectra. In particular, we split (a completion of) tE(n) as a (completion of) a wedge of E(n-1)'s as a spectrum, where t is shorthand for the fixed points of the Z/(p)-Tate cohomology spectrum (ie Mahowald's inverse limit of P_{-k} smash SE(n)). We also give a multiplicative splitting of tE(n) after a suitable base extension.
We study transchromatic phenomena for the Tate construction of Real oriented cohomology theories. First, we show that after suitable completion, the Tate construction with respect to a trivial $\mathbb{Z}/2$-action on height $n$ Real Johnson--Wilson theory splits into a wedge of height $n-1$ Real Johnson--Wilson theories. This is the first example of Tate blueshift at all chromatic heights outside of the complex oriented setting. Second, we prove that the Tate construction with respect to a trivial finite group action on Real Morava K-theory vanishes, refining a classical Tate vanishing result…
Our aim in this paper is to give a geometric description of the cup product in negative degrees of Tate cohomology of a finite group with integral coefficients. By duality it corresponds to a product in the integral homology of $BG$: {\[H_{n}(BG,\mathbb{Z})\otimes H_{m}(BG,\mathbb{Z})\rightarrow H_{n+m+1}(BG,\mathbb{Z})\]} for $n,m>0$. We describe this product as join of cycles, which explains the shift in dimensions. Our motivation came from the product defined by Kreck using stratifold homology. We then prove that for finite groups the cup product in negative Tate cohomology and the Kreck pr…
Quasi-elliptic cohomology is a variant of Tate K-theory. It is the orbifold K-theory of a space of constant loops. For global quotient orbifolds, it can be expressed in terms of equivariant K-theories. In this paper we show how this theory is equipped with power operations. We also prove that the Tate K-theory of symmetric groups modulo a certain transfer ideal classify the finite subgroups of the Tate curve.
Let NG0 denote the category of all pointed numerically generated spaces and continuous maps preserving base-points. In [SYH], we described a passage from bivariant functors to generalized homology and cohomology theories. In this paper, we construct a bivariant functor such that the associated cohomology is the Cech cohomology and the homology is the Steenrod homology (at least for compact metric spaces).
In this paper we give a geometric construction of the Borel equivariant (co)homology for spaces with a $G$-action, where $G$ is a compact Lie group with the property that the adjoint representation is orientable. A nice feature of these constructions is that there are corresponding Poincaré dual (co)homology theories called backwards (co)homology. This gives rise to a third relative (co)homology theory which we call stratifold Tate (co)homology. These Tate groups agree with the original definition of Tate cohomology for finite groups given by Swan. All constructions in this paper are geometric…
From an operad C with an action of a group G, we construct new operads using the homotopy fixed point and orbit spectra. These new operads are shown to be equivalent when the generalized G-Tate cohomology of C is trivial. Applying this theory to the little disk operad C_2 (which is an S^1 operad) we obtain variations on Getzler's gravity operad, which we show governs the Chas-Sullivan string bracket.
Tate cohomology (as well as Borel homology and cohomology) of connective K-theory for $G=(\mathbb{Z}/2)^n$ was completely calculated by Bruner and Greenlees. In this note, we essentially redo the calculation by a different, more elementary method, and we extend it to $p>2$ prime. We also identify the resulting spectra, which are products of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra, and finitely many finite Postnikov towers. For $p=2$, we also reconcile our answer completely with the result of Bruner and Greenlees, which is in a different form, and hence the comparison involves some non-trivial combinatorics…
Let k be the field with p>0 elements, and let G be a finite group. By exhibiting an E-infinity-operad action on Hom(P,k) for a complete projective resolution P of the trivial kG-module k, we obtain power operations of Dyer-Lashof type on Tate cohomology H*(G; k). Our operations agree with the usual Steenrod operations on ordinary cohomology. We show that they are compatible (in a suitable sense) with products of groups, and (in certain cases) with the Evens norm map. These theorems provide tools for explicit computations of the operations for small groups G. We also show that the operations in…
Let k be a field and let G be a finite group. By a theorem of D.Benson, H.Krause and S.Schwede, there is a canonical element in the Hochschild cohomology of the Tate cohomology HH^{3,-1} H*G with the following property: Given any graded H*G-module X, the image of the canonical element in Ext^{3,-1}(X,X) is zero if and only if X is isomorphic to a direct summand of H*(G,M) for some kG-module M. We investigate this canonical element in certain special cases, namely that of (finite) abelian p-groups and the quaternion group. In case of non-triviality of the canonical element, we also give example…
We study the Madsen-Tillman spectrum \CP^\infty_{-1} as a quotient of the Mahowald pro-object \CP^\infty_{-\infty}, which is closely related to the Tate cohomology of circle actions. That theory has an associated symplectic structure, whose symmetries define the Virasoro operations on the cohomology of moduli space constructed by Kontsevich and Witten.
We propose a new method to compute the $C_{2^n}$-equivariant homotopy groups of the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$ as a $RO(C_{2^n})$-graded Green functor using the generalized Tate squares. As an example, we completely compute the $C_4$ case and investigate two $\mathscr{P}$-homotopy limit spectral sequences for the family $\mathscr{P}=\{e,C_2\}$.
We construct a natural transformation from the Bousfield-Kuhn functor evaluated on a space to the Topological Andre-Quillen cohomology of the K(n)-local Spanier-Whitehead dual of the space, and show that the map is an equivalence in the case where the space is a sphere. This results in a method for computing unstable v_n-periodic homotopy groups of spheres from their Morava E-cohomology (as modules over the Dyer-Lashof algebra of Morava E-theory). We relate the resulting algebraic computations to the algebraic geometry of isogenies between Lubin-Tate formal groups.
Using non-commutative differential forms, we construct a complex called singular Hochschild cochain complex for any associative algebra over a field. The cohomology of this complex is isomorphic to the Tate-Hochschild cohomology in the sense of Buchweitz. By a natural action of the cellular chain operad of the spineless cacti operad, introduced by R. Kaufmann, on the singular Hochschild cochain complex, we provide a proof of the Deligne's conjecture for this complex. More concretely, the complex is an algebra over the (dg) operad of chains of the little $2$-discs operad. By this action, we als…
We establish a novel approach to computing $G$-equivariant cohomology for a finite group $G$, and demonstrate it in the case that $G = C_{p^n}$. For any commutative ring spectrum $R$, we prove a symmetric monoidal reconstruction theorem for genuine $G$-$R$-modules, which records them in terms of their geometric fixedpoints as well as gluing maps involving their Tate cohomologies. This reconstruction theorem follows from a symmetric monoidal stratification (in the sense of \cite{AMR-strat}); here we identify the gluing functors of this stratification in terms of Tate cohomology. Passing from ge…
Let k be a field and let G be a finite group. By a theorem of D.Benson, H.Krause and S.Schwede, there is a canonical element in the Hochschild cohomology of the Tate cohomology HH^{3,-1} H*(G) with the following property: Given any graded H*(G)-module X, the image of the canonical element in Ext^{3,-1}(X,X) is zero if and only if X is isomorphic to a direct summand of H*(G,M) for some kG-module M. In particular, if the canonical element vanishes, then every module is a direct summand of a realizable H*(G)-module. We prove that the converse of that last statement is not true by studying in deta…
This expository paper introduces several ideas in chromatic homotopy theory around Morava's extraordinary E-theories. In particular, we construct various moduli problems closely related to Lubin-Tate deformation theory and study their symmetries. These symmetries are then used in conjunction with the Hopkins-Kuhn-Ravenel character theory to provide formulas for the power operations and the stabilizer group action on the E-cohomology of a finite group.
Building on work of Livernet and Richter, we prove that E_n-homology and E_n-cohomology of a commutative algebra with coefficients in a symmetric bimodule can be interpreted as functor homology and cohomology. Furthermore we show that the associated Yoneda algebra is trivial.
Derived D-Geometry is considered as a convenient language for a coordinate-free investigation of nonlinear partial differential equations up to symmetries. One of the first issues one meets in the functor of points approach to derived D-Geometry, is the question of a model structure on the category C of differential non-negatively graded quasi-coherent commutative algebras over the sheaf D of differential operators of an appropriate underlying variety. In [BPP15a], we described a cofibrantly generated model structure on C via the definition of its weak equivalences and its fibrations. In the p…
We consider brave new cochain extensions $F(BG_+,R)\to F(EG_+,R)$, where $R$ is either a Lubin-Tate spectrum $E_n$ or the related 2-periodic Morava K-theory $K_n$, and $G$ is a finite group. When $R$ is an Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum, in some good cases such an extension is a $G$-Galois extension in the sense of John Rognes, but not always faithful. We prove that for $E_n$ and $K_n$ these extensions are always faithful in the $K_n$ local category. However, for a cyclic $p$-group $C_{p^r}$, the cochain extension $F({BC_{p^r}}_+,E_n) \to F({EC_{p^r}}_+,E_n)$ is not a Galois extensions because it…
Given a differential graded (dg) symmetric Frobenius algebra $A$ we construct an unbounded complex $\mathcal{D}^{*}(A,A)$, called the Tate-Hochschild complex, which arises as a totalization of a double complex having Hochschild chains as negative columns and Hochschild cochains as non-negative columns. We prove that the complex $\mathcal{D}^*(A,A)$ computes the singular Hochschild cohomology of $A$. We construct a cyclic (or Calabi-Yau) $A$-infinity algebra structure, which extends the classical Hochschild cup and cap products, and an $L$-infinity algebra structure extending the classical Gers…
