Let A be an integral domain with field of fractions K. We investigate the structure of the overrings B of A (contained in K) that are well-centered on A in the sense that each principal ideal of B is generated by an element of A. We consider the relation of well-centeredness to the properties of flatness, localization and sublocalization for B over A. If B = A[b] is a simple extension of A, we prove that B is a localization of A if and only if B is flat and well-centered over A. If the integral closure of A is a Krull domain, in particular, if A is Noetherian, we prove that every finitely generated flat well-centered overring of A is a localization of A. We present examples of (non-finitely generated) flat well-centered overrings of a Dedekind domain that are not localizations.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $T(R)$ its total quotient ring. We extend the notion of well-centered overring of an integral domain to an arbitrary commutative ring and we investigate the transfer of this property to different extensions of commutative rings in both integral and non-integral cases. Namely in pullbacks and trivial extensions. Our aim is to provide new classes of commutative rings satisfying this property and to shed light on some open questions raised by Heinzer and Roitman in \cite{HR}.
In this note we present a corregindium to our paper "Krull dimension, Overrings and Semistar operations of an integral Domain", Journal of Algebra, 321 (2009), 1497--1509.
Call a domain $R$ an sQQR-domain if each simple overring of $R$, i.e., each ring of the form $R[u]$ with $u$ in the quotient field of $R$, is an intersection of localizations of $R$. We characterize Prüfer domains as integrally closed sQQR-domains. In the presence of certain finiteness conditions, we show that the sQQR-property is very strong; for instance, a Mori sQQR-domain must be a Dedekind domain. We also show how to construct sQQR-domains which have (non-simple) overrings which are not intersections of localizations.
et $R$ be an integral domain with quotient field $L$. An overring $T$ of $R$ is $t$-linked over $R$ if $I^{-1}=R$ implies that $(T:IT)=T$ for each finitely generated ideal $I$ of $R$. Let $O_{t}(R)$ denotes the set of all $t$-linked overrings of $R$ and $O(R)$ the set of all overrings of $R$. The purpose of this paper is to study some finiteness conditions on the set $O_{t}(R)$. Particularly, we prove that if $O_{t}(R)$ is finite, then so is $O(R)$ and $O_{t}(R)=O(R)$, and if each chain of $t$-linked overrings of $R$ is finite, then each chain of overrings of $R$ is finite. This yields that th…
We study the set of localizations of an integral domain from a topological point of view, showing that it is always a spectral space and characterizing when it is a proconstructible subspace of the space of all overrings. We then study the same problems in the case of quotient rings, flat overrings and sublocalizations.
Let $V$ be a minimal valuation overring of an integral domain $D$ and let $\mathrm{Zar}(D)$ be the Zariski space of the valuation overrings of $D$. Starting from a result in the theory of semistar operations, we prove a criterion under which the set $\mathrm{Zar}(D)\setminus\{V\}$ is not compact. We then use it to prove that, in many cases, $\mathrm{Zar}(D)$ is not a Noetherian space, and apply it to the study of the spaces of Kronecker function rings and of Noetherian overrings.
An integral domain is called {\em Globalized multiplicatively pinched-Dedekind domain $($GMPD domain$)$} if every nonzero non-invertible ideal can be written as $JP_1\cdots P_k$ with $J$ invertible ideal and $P_1,...,P_k$ distinct ideals which are maximal among the nonzero non-invertible ideals, cf. \cite{DumII}. The GMPD domains with only finitely many overrings have been recently studied in \cite{SU}. In this paper we find the exact number of quasi-local overrings of GMPD domains that only finitely many overrings. Also we study the effect of quasi-local overrings on the properties of GMPD do…
Call a semistar operation $\ast$ on the polynomial domain $D[X]$ an extension (respectively, a strict extension) of a semistar operation $\star$ defined on an integral domain $D$, with quotient field $K$, if $E^\star = (E[X])^{\ast}\cap K$ (respectively, $E^\star [X]= (E[X])^{\ast}$) for all nonzero $D$-submodules $E$ of $K$. In this paper, we study the general properties of the above defined extensions and link our work with earlier efforts, centered on the stable semistar operation case, at defining semistar operations on $D[X]$ that are "canonical" extensions (or, "canonical" strict extensi…
Let $R$ be a regular local ring of dimension at least 2. Associated to each valuation domain birationally dominating $R$, there exists a unique sequence $\{R_n\}$ of local quadratic transforms of $R$ along this valuation domain. We consider the situation where the sequence $\{ R_n \}_{n \ge 0}$ is infinite, and examine ideal-theoretic properties of the integrally closed local domain $S = \bigcup_{n \ge 0} R_n$. Among the set of valuation overrings of $R$, there exists a unique limit point $V$ for the sequence of order valuation rings of the $R_n$. We prove the existence of a unique minimal pro…
Let $R$ be an integral domain, $Star(R)$ the set of all star operations on $R$ and $StarFC(R)$ the set of all star operations of finite type on $R$. Then $R$ is said to be star regular if $|Star(T)|\leq |Star(R)|$ for every overring $T$ of $R$. In this paper we introduce the notion of finitely star regular domain as an integral domain $R$ such that $|StarFC(T)|\leq |StarFC(R)|$ for each overring $T$ of $R$. First, we show that the notions of star regular and finitely star regular domains are completely different and do not imply each other. Next, we extend/generalize well-known results on star…
Let $D$ be an integral domain with quotient field $K$. Call an overring $S$ of $D$ a subring of $K$ containing $D$ as a subring. A family $\{S_λ\midλ\in Λ\}$ of overrings of $D$ is called a defining family of $D$, if $D = \bigcap\{S_λ\midλ\in Λ\}$. Call an overring $S$ a sublocalization of $D$, if $S$ has a defining family consisting of rings of fractions of $D$. Sublocalizations and their intersections exhibit interesting examples of semistar or star operations. We show as a consequence of our work that domains that are locally finite intersections of Prüfer $v$-multiplication (respectively, …
In this note we show that an integral domain $D$ of finite $w$-dimension is a quasi-Prüfer domain if and only if each overring of $D$ is a $w$-Jaffard domain. Similar characterizations of quasi-Prüfer domains are given by replacing $w$-Jaffard domain by $w$-stably strong S-domain, and $w$-strong S-domain. We also give new characterizations of UM$t$ domains.
Given a stable semistar operation of finite type $\star$ on an integral domain $D$, we show that it is possible to define in a canonical way a stable semistar operation of finite type $\star[X]$ on the polynomial ring $D[X]$, such that, if $n:=\star$-$\dim(D)$, then $n+1\leq \star[X]\text{-}\dim(D[X])\leq 2n+1$. We also establish that if $D$ is a $\star$-Noetherian domain or is a Prüfer $\star$-multiplication domain, then $\star[X]\text{-}\dim(D[X])=\star\text{-}\dim(D)+1$. Moreover we define the semistar valuative dimension of the domain $D$, denoted by $\star$-$\dim_v(D)$, to be the maximal …
If every subring of an integral domain is atomic, then we say that the latter is hereditarily atomic. In this paper, we study hereditarily atomic domains. First, we characterize when certain direct limits of Dedekind domains are Dedekind domains in terms of atomic overrings. Then we use this characterization to determine the fields that are hereditarily atomic. On the other hand, we investigate hereditary atomicity in the context of rings of polynomials and rings of Laurent polynomials, characterizing the fields and rings whose rings of polynomials and rings of Laurent polynomials, respectivel…
We study decompositions of length functions on integral domains as sums of length functions constructed from overrings. We find a standard representation when the integral domain admits a Jaffard family, when it is Noetherian and when it is a Prüfer domains such that every ideal has only finitely many minimal primes. We also show that there is a natural bijective correspondence between singular length functions and localizing systems.
This paper seeks ring-theoretic conditions of an integral domain R that reflect in the Clifford property or Boolean property of its class semigroup S(R), that is, the semigroup of the isomorphy classes of the nonzero (integral) ideals of R with the operation induced by multiplication. Precisely, in Section 3, we characterize integrally closed domains with Boolean class semigoup; in this case, S(R) identifies with the Boolean semigroup formed of all fractional overrings of R. In Section 4, we investigate Noetherian-like settings where the Clifford and Boolean properties of S(R) coincide with (L…
Let $D$ be an integral domain with quotient field $K$. The $b$-operation that associates to each nonzero $D$-submodule $E$ of $K$, $E^b := \bigcap\{EV \mid V valuation overring of D\}$, is a semistar operation that plays an important role in many questions of ring theory (e.g., if $I$ is a nonzero ideal in $D$, $I^b$ coincides with its integral closure). In a first part of the paper, we study the integral domains that are $b$-Noetherian (i.e., such that, for each nonzero ideal $I$ of $D$, $I^b = J^b$ for some a finitely generated ideal $J$ of $D$). For instance, we prove that a $b$-Noetherian …
This is a continuation of a previous paper by the same authors. In the former paper, it was proved that in order to obtain local uniformization for valuations centered on local domains, it is enough to prove it for rank one valuations. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of valuations centered on rings which are not necessarily integral domains and may even contain nilpotents.
