We consider the problem of variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under off-diagonal perturbations. We prove a number of new optimal results on the shift of the spectrum and obtain (sharp) estimates on the norm of the difference of two spectral projections.
We discuss the spectral subspace perturbation problem for a self-adjoint operator. Assuming that the convex hull of a part of its spectrum does not intersect the remainder of the spectrum, we establish an \textit{a priori} sharp bound on variation of the corresponding spectral subspace under off-diagonal perturbations. This bound represents a new, \textit{a priori}, $\tanΘ$ Theorem. We also extend the Davis--Kahan $\tan 2Θ$ Theorem to the case of some unbounded perturbations.
The variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under an additive bounded perturbation is considered. The objective is to estimate the norm of the difference of two spectral projections associated with isolated parts of the spectrum of the perturbed and unperturbed operators. Recent results for semidefinite and general, not necessarily semidefinite, perturbations are unified to statements that cover both types of perturbations and, at the same time, also allow for certain perturbations that were not covered before.
We discuss the problem of perturbation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators on a separable Hilbert space. Let $A$ and $V$ be bounded self-adjoint operators. Assume that the spectrum of $A$ consists of two disjoint parts $σ$ and $Σ$ such that $d=\text{dist}(σ, Σ)>0$. We show that the norm of the difference of the spectral projections $\EE_A(σ)$ and $\EE_{A+V}\big (\{λ| \dist(λ, σ)$ $<d/2\}\big)$ for $A$ and $A+V$ is less then one whenever either (i) $\|V\|<\frac{2}{2+π}d$ or (ii) $\|V\|<{1/2}d$ and certain assumptions on the mutual disposition of the sets $σ$ and $Σ$ are sati…
This paper is concerned with the stability of deficiency indices of Hermitian subspaces (i.e., linear relations) under relatively bounded perturbations in Hilbert spaces. Several results about invariance of deficiency indices of Hermitian subspaces under relatively bounded perturbations are established. As a consequence, invariance of self-adjointness of Hermitian subspaces under relatively bounded perturbations is obtained. In addition, it is shown that the deficiency indices may shrink in the special case that the relative bound is equal to 1. The results obtained in the present paper genera…
We provide upper bounds on the perturbation of invariant subspaces of normal matrices measured using a metric on the space of vector subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^n$ in terms of the spectrum of both the unperturbed \& perturbed matrices, as well as, spectrum of the unperturbed matrix only. The results presented give tighter bounds than the Davis-Khan $\sinΘ$ theorem. We apply the result to a graph perturbation problem.
Let $A$ be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $\fH$. Assume that the spectrum of $A$ consists of two disjoint components $σ_0$ and $σ_1$. Let $V$ be a bounded operator on $\fH$, off-diagonal and $J$-self-adjoint with respect to the orthogonal decomposition $\fH=\fH_0\oplus\fH_1$ where $\fH_0$ and $\fH_1$ are the spectral subspaces of $A$ associated with the spectral sets $σ_0$ and $σ_1$, respectively. We find (optimal) conditions on $V$ guaranteeing that the perturbed operator $L=A+V$ is similar to a self-adjoint operator. Moreover, we prove a number of (sharp) norm bounds on variation…
The variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under an additive bounded off-diagonal perturbation is studied. To this end, the optimization approach for general perturbations in [J. Anal. Math., to appear; arXiv:1310.4360 (2013)] is adapted. It is shown that, in contrast to the case of general perturbations, the corresponding optimization problem can not be reduced to a finite-dimensional problem. A suitable choice of the involved parameters provides an upper bound for the solution of the optimization problem. In particular, this yields a rotation bound on the subspaces…
Assume that $T$ is a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and that the spectrum of $T$ is confined in the union $\bigcup_{j\in J}Δ_j$, $J\subseteq\mathbb{Z}$, of segments $Δ_j=[α_j, β_j]\subset\mathbb{R}$ such that $α_{j+1}>β_j$ and $$ \inf_{j} \left(α_{j+1}-β_j\right) = d > 0. $$ If $B$ is a bounded (in general non-self-adjoint) perturbation of $T$ with $\|B\|=:b<d/2$ then the spectrum of the perturbed operator $A=T+B$ lies in the union $\bigcup_{j\in J} U_{b}(Δ_j)$ of the mutually disjoint closed $b$-neighborhoods $U_{b}(Δ_j)$ of the segments $Δ_j$ in $\mathbb{C}$. Let $Q_j…
The variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under an additive bounded semidefinite perturbation is considered. A variant of the Davis-Kahan $ \sin2Θ$ theorem from [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 7 (1970), 1--46] adapted to this situation is proved. Under a certain additional geometric assumption on the separation of the spectrum of the unperturbed operator, this leads to a sharp estimate on the norm of the difference of the spectral projections associated with isolated components of the spectrum of the perturbed and unperturbed operators, respectively. Without this additional g…
Let A be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space H. Assume that σ is an isolated component of the spectrum of A, i.e. dist(σ,Σ)=d>0 where Σ=spec(A)\σ. Suppose that V is a bounded self-adjoint operator on H such that ||V||<d/2 and let L=A+V. Denote by P the spectral projection of A associated with the spectral set σ and let Q be the spectral projection of L corresponding to the closed ||V||-neighborhood of σ. We prove a bound of the form arcsin(||P-Q||)\leq M(||V||/d), M: [0,1/2)-->R^+, that is essentially stronger than the previously known estimates for ||P-Q||. In particular, the bound obt…
The problem of variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under an additive bounded perturbation is considered. The aim is to find the best possible upper bound on the norm of the difference of two spectral projections associated with isolated parts of the spectrum of the perturbed and unperturbed operators. In the approach presented here, a constrained optimization problem on a specific set of parameters is formulated, whose solution yields an estimate on the arcsine of the norm of the difference of the corresponding spectral projections. The problem is solved explicitl…
This paper is devoted to the study of preservation of eigenvalues, Jordan structure and complementary invariant subspaces of structured matrices under structured perturbations. Perturbations and structure-preserving perturbations are determined such that a perturbed matrix reproduces a given subspace as an invariant subspace and preserves a pair of complementary invariant subspaces of the unperturbed matrix. These results are further utilized to obtain structure-preserving perturbations which modify certain eigenvalues of a given structured matrix and reproduce a set of desired eigenvalues whi…
Consider an elliptic self-adjoint pseudodifferential operator $A$ acting on $m$-columns of half-densities on a closed manifold $M$, whose principal symbol is assumed to have simple eigenvalues. We show that the spectrum of $A$ decomposes, up to an error with superpolynomial decay, into $m$ distinct series, each associated with one of the eigenvalues of the principal symbol of $A$. These spectral results are then applied to the study of propagation of singularities in hyperbolic systems. The key technical ingredient is the use of the carefully devised pseudodifferential projections introduced i…
Given a self-adjoint involution J on a Hilbert space H, we consider a J-self-adjoint operator L=A+V on H where A is a possibly unbounded self-adjoint operator commuting with J and V a bounded J-self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with J. We establish optimal estimates on the position of the spectrum of L with respect to the spectrum of A and we obtain norm bounds on the operator angles between maximal uniformly definite reducing subspaces of the unperturbed operator A and the perturbed operator L. All the bounds are given in terms of the norm of V and the distances between pairs of disjoint s…
We introduce the notion of scattering space $S_b^r$ for $N$-body quantum mechanical systems, where $b$ is a cluster decomposition with $2\le |b|\le N$ and $r$ is a real number $0\le r\le 1$. Utilizing these spaces, we give a decomposition of continuous spectral subspace by $S_b^1$ for $N$-body quantum systems with long-range pair potentials $V_α^L(x_α)=O(|x_\al|^{-\ep})$. This is extended to a decomposition by $S_b^r$ with $0\le r\le 1$ for some long-range case. We also prove a characterization of ranges of wave operators by $S_b^0$.
The role of the normalized modularity matrix in finding homogeneous cuts will be presented. We also discuss the testability of the structural eigenvalues and that of the subspace spanned by the corresponding eigenvectors of this matrix. In the presence of a spectral gap between the k-1 largest absolute value eigenvalues and the remainder of the spectrum, this in turn implies the testability of the sum of the inner variances of the k clusters that are obtained by applying the k-means algorithm for the appropriately chosen vertex representatives.
This paper discusses how much information on a Friedrichs model operator can be detected from `measurements on the boundary'. We use the framework of boundary triples to introduce the generalised Titchmarsh-Weyl $M$-function and the detectable subspaces which are associated with the part of the operator which is `accessible from boundary measurements'. The Friedrichs model, a finite rank perturbation of the operator of multiplication by the independent variable, is a toy model that is used frequently in the study of perturbation problems. We view the Friedrichs model as a key example for the d…
We provide an abstract framework for a Logvinenko-Sereda type theorem, where the classical compactness assumption on the support of the Fourier transform is replaced by the assumption that the functions under consideration belong to a spectral subspace associated with a finite energy interval for some lower semibounded self-adjoint operator on a Euclidean $L^2$-space. Our result then provides a bound for the $L^2$-norm of such functions in terms of their $L^2$-norm on a thick subset with a constant explicit in the geometric and spectral parameters. This recovers previous results for functions …
This paper is concerned with regular approximations of spectra of singular discrete linear Hamiltonian systems with one singular endpoint. For any given self-adjoint subspace extension (SSE) of the corresponding minimal subspace, its spectrum can be approximated by eigenvalues of a sequence of induced regular SSEs, generated by the same difference expression on smaller finite intervals. It is shown that every SSE of the minimal subspace has a pure discrete spectrum, and the k-th eigenvalue of any given SSE is exactly the limit of the k-th eigenvalues of the induced regular SSEs; that is, spect…
Let $\mathbf{A}$ be a bounded self-adjoint operator on a separable Hilbert space $\mathfrak{H}$ and $\mathfrak{H}_0\subset\mathfrak{H}$ a closed invariant subspace of $\mathbf{A}$. Assuming that $\mathfrak{H}_0$ is of codimension 1, we study the variation of the invariant subspace $\mathfrak{H}_0$ under bounded self-adjoint perturbations $\mathbf{V}$ of $\mathbf{A}$ that are off-diagonal with respect to the decomposition $\mathfrak{H}= \mathfrak{H}_0\oplus\mathfrak{H}_1$. In particular, we prove the existence of a one-parameter family of dense non-closed invariant subspaces of the operator $\m…
