Given a set A in Z/NZ we may form a Cayley sum graph G_A on vertex set Z/NZ by joining i to j if and only if i + j is in A. We investigate the extent to which performing this construction with a random set A simulates the generation of a random graph, proving that the clique number of G_A is a.s. O(log N). This shows that Cayley sum graphs can furnish good examples of Ramsey graphs. To prove this result we must study the specific structure of set addition on Z/NZ. Indeed, we also show that the clique number of a random Cayley sum graph on (Z/2Z)^n, 2^n = N, is almost surely not O(log N).
Despite the graph-theoretical title, this is a paper in number theory. Our main results are essentially estimates for the number of sets A in {1,...,N} with |A| = k and |A + A| = m, for various values of k and m.
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group of order $n$. For any subset $B$ of $G$ with $B=-B$, the Cayley graph $G_B$ is a graph on vertex set $G$ in which $ij$ is an edge if and only if $i-j\in B.$ It was shown by Ben Green that when $G$ is a vector space over a finite field $Z/pZ$, then there is a Cayley graph containing neither a complete subgraph nor an independent set of size more than $clog nloglog n,$ where $c$ is an absolute constant. In this article we observe that a modification of his arguments shows that for an arbitrary finite abelian group of order $n$, there is a Cayley graph containing…
We prove that the clique number of the Paley graph is at most $\sqrt{p/2} + 1$, and that any supposed additive decompositions of the set of quadratic residues can only come from co-Sidon sets.
A well-known conjecture due to van Lint and MacWilliams states that if $A$ is a subset of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ such that $0,1 \in A$, $|A|=q$, and $a-b$ is a square for each $a,b \in A$, then $A$ must be the subfield $\mathbb{F}_q$. This conjecture is often phrased in terms of the maximum cliques in Paley graphs. It was first proved by Blokhuis and later extended by Sziklai to generalized Paley graphs. In this paper, we give a new proof of the conjecture and its variants, and show this Erdős-Ko-Rado property of Paley graphs extends to a larger family of Cayley graphs, which we call Peisert-type …
We describe a new class of maximal cliques, with a vector space structure, of Cayley graphs defined on the additive group of a field. In particular, we show that in the cubic Paley graph with order $q^3$, the subfield with $q$ elements forms a maximal clique. Similar statements also hold for quadruple Paley graphs and Peisert graphs with quartic order.
Computing the clique number and chromatic number of a general graph are well-known NP-Hard problems. Codenotti et al. (Bruno Codenotti, Ivan Gerace, and Sebastiano Vigna. Hardness results and spectral techniques for combinatorial problems on circulant graphs. \emph{Linear Algebra Appl.}, 285(1-3): 123--142, 1998) showed that computing clique number and chromatic number are still NP-Hard problems for the class of circulant graphs. We show that computing clique number is NP-Hard for the class of Cayley graphs for the groups $G^n$, where $G$ is any fixed finite group (e.g., cubelike graphs). We a…
Green showed that there exist constants $C_1,C_2>0$ such that the clique number $ω$ of the random Cayley graph on $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ satisfies $\lim_{n\to\infty}\mathbb{P}(C_1n\log n < ω< C_2n\log n)=1$. In this paper we find the best possible $C_1$ and $C_2$. Moreover, we prove that for $n$ in a set of density $1$, clique number is actually concentrated on a single value. As a simple consequence of these results, we also prove the one-point concentration result for the chromatic number, thus proving the $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ analogue of the famous conjecture by Bollobás and giving almost the complet…
If $X$ is a commutative ring with unity, then the unitary Cayley graph of $X$, denoted $G_X$, is defined to be the graph whose vertex set is $X$ and whose edge set is $\{\{a,b\}\colon a-b\in X^\times\}$. When $R$ is a Dedekind domain and $I$ is an ideal of $R$ such that $R/I$ is finite and nontrivial, we refer to $G_{R/I}$ as a \emph{generalized totient graph}. We study generalized totient graphs as generalizations of the graphs $G_{\mathbb{Z}/(n)}$, which have appeared recently in the literature, sometimes under the name \emph{Euler totient Cayley graphs}. We begin by generalizing to Dedekind…
We study the number of $k$-element sets $A \subset \{1,\ldots,N\}$ with $|A + A| \leq K|A|$ for some (fixed) $K > 0$. Improving results of the first author and of Alon, Balogh, Samotij and the second author, we determine this number up to a factor of $2^{o(k)} N^{o(1)}$ for most $N$ and $k$. As a consequence of this and a further new result concerning the number of sets $A \subset \mathbf{Z}/N\mathbf{Z}$ with $|A +A| \leq c |A|^2$, we deduce that the random Cayley graph on $\mathbf{Z}/N\mathbf{Z}$ with edge density~$\frac{1}{2}$ has no clique or independent set of size greater than $\big( 2 + …
This paper deals with the Cayley graph $\Cay,$ where the generating set consists of all block transpositions. A motivation for the study of these particular Cayley graphs comes from current research in Bioinformatics. We prove that ${\rm{Aut}}(\Cay)$ is the product of the right translation group by $\textsf{N}\rtimes \textsf{D}_{n+1},$ where $\textsf{N}$ is the subgroup fixing $S_n$ element-wise and $\textsf{D}_{n+1}$ is a dihedral group of order $2(n+1)$. We conjecture that $\textsf{N}$ is trivial. We also prove that the subgraph $Γ$ with vertex-set $S_n$ is a $2(n-2)$-regular graph whose aut…
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$, denoted $G_{\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z}$, is the graph with vertices $0,1,\ldots,$ $n-1$ in which two vertices are adjacent if and only if their difference is relatively prime to $n$. These graphs are central to the study of graph representations modulo integers, which were originally introduced by Erdős and Evans. We give a brief account of some results concerning these beautiful graphs and provide a short proof of a simple formula for the number of cliques of any order $m$ in the unitary Cayley graph $G_{\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z}$. This formula invol…
We consider the Cayley graph ${\rm C}(W,S)$ of a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and describe all maximal $2$-cliques in this graph, i.e. maximal subsets in the vertex set such that the distance between any two distinct elements is equal to $2$. As an application, we show that every automorphism of the half of Cayley graph is uniquely extendable to an automorphism of the Cayley graph if $|S|\ge 5$.
This paper deals with the Cayley graph $\mathrm{Cay}(\mathrm{Sym}_n,T_n),$ where the generating set consists of all block transpositions. A motivation for the study of these particular Cayley graphs comes from current research in Bioinformatics. As the main result, we prove that Aut$(\mathrm{Cay}(\mathrm{Sym}_n,T_n))$ is the product of the left translation group by a dihedral group $\mathsf{D}_{n+1}$ of order $2(n+1)$. The proof uses several properties of the subgraph $Γ$ of $\mathrm{Cay}(\mathrm{Sym}_n,T_n)$ induced by the set $T_n$. In particular, $Γ$ is a $2(n-2)$-regular graph whose automo…
Motivated by the Cauchy-Davenport theorem for sumsets, and its interpretation in terms of Cayley graphs, we prove the following main result : There is a universal constant e > 0 such that, if G is a connected, regular graph on n vertices, then either every pair of vertices can be connected by a path of length at most 3, or the number of pairs of such vertices is at least 1+e times the number of edges in G. We discuss a range of further questions to which this result gives rise.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity and $R^{+}$ be $Z^*(R)$ be the additive group and the set of all non-zero zero-divisors of $R$, respectively. We denote by $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ the Cayley graph $Cay(R^+,Z^*(R))$. In this paper, we study $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$. Among other results, it is shown that for every zero-dimensional non-local ring $R$, $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ is a connected graph of diameter 2. Moreover, for a finite ring $R$, we obtain the vertex connectivity and the edge connectivity of $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$. We investigate rings $R$ with perfect $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ as well. We also study $Reg(\…
The concept of gcd-graphs is introduced by Klotz and Sander, which arises as a generalization of unitary Cayley graphs. The gcd-graph $X_n (d_1,...,d_k)$ has vertices $0,1,...,n-1$, and two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent iff $\gcd(x-y,n)\in D = \{d_1,d_2,...,d_k\}$. These graphs are exactly the same as circulant graphs with integral eigenvalues characterized by So. In this paper we deal with the clique number of integral circulant graphs and investigate the conjecture proposed in \cite{klotz07} that clique number divides the number of vertices in the graph $X_n (D)$. We completely solve the…
In this paper we introduce new models of random graphs, arising from Latin squares which include random Cayley graphs as a special case. We investigate some properties of these graphs including their clique, independence and chromatic numbers, their expansion properties as well as their connectivity and Hamiltonicity. The results obtained are compared with other models of random graphs and several similarities and differences are pointed out. For many properties our results for the general case are as strong as the known results for random Cayley graphs and sometimes improve the previously bes…
In this work, given $(R,\frak m)$ a finite commutative local ring with identity and $k \in \mathbb{N}$ with $(k,|R|)=1$, we study the number of cliques of any size in the Cayley graph $G_R(k)=Cay(R,U_R(k))$ %and $W_R(k)=Cay(R,S_R(k))$ with $U_R(k)=\{x^k : x\in R^*\}$. Using the known fact that the graph $G_R(k)$ can be obtained by blowing-up the vertices of $G_{\mathbb{F}_{q}}(k)$ a number $|\frak{m}|$ of times, with independence sets the cosets of $\frak{m}$, where $q$ is the size of the residue field $R/\frak m$. Then, by using the above blowing-up, we reduce the study of the number of cliqu…
A graph G is uniquely K_r-saturated if it contains no clique with r vertices and if for all edges e in the complement, G + e has a unique clique with r vertices. Previously, few examples of uniquely K_r-saturated graphs were known, and little was known about their properties. We search for these graphs by adapting orbital branching, a technique originally developed for symmetric integer linear programs. We find several new uniquely K_r-saturated graphs with 4 \leq r \leq 7, as well as two new infinite families based on Cayley graphs for Z_n with a small number of generators.
\noindent The augmented cube graph $AQ_n$ is the Cayley graph of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$ with respect to the set of $2n-1$ generators $\{e_1,e_2, \ldots,e_n, 00\ldots0011, 00\ldots0111, 11\ldots1111 \}$. It is known that the order of the automorphism group of the graph $AQ_n$ is $2^{n+3}$, for all $n \ge 4$. In the present paper, we obtain the structure of the automorphism group of $AQ_n$ to be \[ \Aut(AQ_n) \cong \mathbb{Z}_2^n \rtimes D_8~~(n \ge 4),\] where $D_8$ is the dihedral group of order 8. It is shown that the Cayley graph $AQ_3$ is non-normal and that $AQ_n$ is normal for all $n \ge 4$. We…
Let $A_n$ be the alternating group of even permutations of $X:=\{1,2,...,n\}$ and ${\mathcal E}_n$ the set of even derangements on $X.$ Denote by $A\T_n^q$ the tensor product of $q$ copies of $A\T_n,$ where the Cayley graph $A\T_n:=\T(A_n,{\mathcal E}_n)$ is called the even derangement graph. In this paper, we intensively investigate the properties of $A\T_n^q$ including connectedness, diameter, independence number, clique number, chromatic number and the maximum-size independent sets of $A\T_n^q.$ By using the result on the maximum-size independent sets $A\T_n^q$, we completely determine the …
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, written additively, and $H$ a subgroup of~$G$. The \emph{subgroup sum graph} $Γ_{G,H}$ is the graph with vertex set $G$, in which two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are joined if $x+y\in H\setminus\{0\}$. These graphs form a fairly large class of Cayley sum graphs. Among cases which have been considered previously are the \emph{prime sum graphs}, in the case where $H=pG$ for some prime number $p$. In this paper we present their structure and a detailed analysis of their properties. We also consider the simpler graph $Γ^+_{G,H}$, which we refer to as the \emph{…
According to the O'Nan--Scott Theorem, a finite primitive permutation group either preserves a structure of one of three types (affine space, Cartesian lattice, or diagonal semilattice), or is almost simple. However, diagonal groups are a much larger class than those occurring in this theorem. For any positive integer $m$ and group $G$ (finite or infinite), there is a diagonal semilattice, a sub-semilattice of the lattice of partitions of a set $Ω$, whose automorphism group is the corresponding diagonal group. Moreover, there is a graph (the diagonal graph), bearing much the same relation to t…
